Giving to
Children’s:
A look back
SPRING 2011
Serving Children’s patients with the highest-quality care means
taking into account everything that touches the lives of
children and their families. By contributing $26.2 million to
The Children’s Hospital over the past year, our community
of donors has done just that.
The Children’s Hospital Foundation received a wide range of gifts in 2010. Whether
large or small, these gifts support Children’s patients through initiatives that improve
patient care, contribute to research to find better treatments and cures, and support
education and advocacy on behalf of children, while supporting Children’s strong
national and international reputation.
The snapshots that follow are a glimpse of some of the gifts the Foundation received
in 2010 that will help foster excellence in all aspects of Children’s mission.

Children’s corporate partners:
Above and beyond
Support
Dear
friends,
Thank you for the many ways you
support the hospital’s work. Whether
you are riding and fundraising for the
Courage Classic, calling in a monthly
donation through one of our radiothons,
attending our annual Gala, or simply
making a gift, your generosity touches
the lives of each child and family
we treat.
Our work at The Children’s Hospital
Foundation is really pretty simple:
we engage our community to provide
hope to the patients and families who
come to us for care. Families seek hope
whether the economy is thriving or in
recession, and we are all fortunate that
Children’s is so uniquely positioned to
provide that hope.
We are blessed to live in a community
that values Children’s mission to offer
every child the opportunity to live a
healthy life and reach their full potential.
In the coming years, your support will
fuel innovation, discovery and research
that will lead to better treatment and
cures for childhood disease.
Thank you, again, for joining us
to make the hope for healthier
childhoods a reality.
In appreciation,
Steve Winesett
President and CEO
The Children’s Hospital Foundation

Businesses of any type and size can demonstrate their support of children and families
through a corporate giving program to benefit the hospital. The following stories represent
just a few of the ways Children’s corporate partners have given to the hospital in the past year.
Crocs employees present $20,000 gift to Children’s
Colorado-based Crocs recently donated 2.5 million shoes
around the world. In one celebration of this great achievement,
the company began the new year by presenting an additional
donation of Crocs shoes to Children’s clinical staff and patients
along with a $20,000 check. The donation was 100 percent
raised by Crocs employees, who also plan to host a blood drive
for Children’s later this year.
From left to right: Chief Quality Officer Dr. Dan Hyman, Dr. Nick Foreman, Children’s patient Amelia, Crocs CEO
John McCarvel, Foundation Philanthropy Director Les Lee, Jeff Lasher and Children’s patient Julia, celebrate the
$20,000 donation from Crocs.
Anadarko Petroleum Corporation
Employees of the Anadarko Petroleum Corporation’s downtown Denver office hold an annual
craft and bake sale for The Children’s Hospital. This year’s event raised $4,502 for The Children’s
Hospital Burn Program. Anadarko is also a corporate sponsor of The Children’s Hospital
Courage Classic.
UnitedHealthcare
This February, UnitedHealthcare (UHC) sponsored a Valentine’s Craft Day in The Children’s
Hospital’s Boettcher Atrium. UHC employees were on hand to help create valentines and
crafts for Children’s patients, bringing a cheerful and creative activity to all who participated
and supporting the hospital’s spirit of family-centered care.
Kohl’s department stores associates in action
Kohl’s is a big supporter of The Children’s
Hospital. In addition to educating families on
healthier care for infants through Kohl’s Shaken
Baby Syndrome Prevention campaign, Kohl’s
employees volunteer at many events that
benefit Children’s throughout the year,
including Alice’s 36 Hours for Kids and Courage
Classic. As part of their corporate employee
match program, Kohl’s also gives an additional
grant to the hospital for each group of associates who volunteers at Children’s. In 2010,
Associates in Action grants raised an additional $26,500 for The Children’s Hospital.
Wonderful
gift supports
future
generations
In honor of Mildred Nienaber’s 95th birthday,
a cake featuring Children’s balloon boy icon was
a small token of the Foundation’s appreciation for
an extremely generous donation.
When Boulder resident Mrs. Mildred J. Nienaber
celebrated her 95th birthday in February,
The Children’s Hospital Foundation presented
her with a special cake featuring Children’s
iconic balloon boy.
The cake was a small token of appreciation for an extremely
generous donation: in late 2010, Mildred established two visionary
endowed funds with a gift of $1 million through her estate.
“Her thoughtful and generous planning
will impact the quality of care the hospital
provides to children day after day, year after
year, for generations to come.”
The William F. and Mildred J. Nienaber Endowed Fund for Child
Health Research and The William F. and Mildred J. Nienaber Endowed
Fund for Patient Care are planned gifts that will help Children’s
continue to improve child health research and patient care that will
impact generations of children to come.
As one of the hospital’s areas of focus in the coming years, child
health research is of paramount importance to providing better
treatments and cures for children in Colorado and beyond. Under
the direction of Children’s newly-hired Chief Research Officer,
Dr. Frederick Suchy, The Nienaber Fund for Child Health Research
will support Children’s program of innovation and discovery and
coordinated research efforts between The Children’s Hospital and
the University of Colorado Denver.
Patient care, supported by Mildred’s second endowed fund, is a
hallmark of Children’s commitment to families around our region.
From providing a healing environment for patients by offering
private rooms, homelike environments, rotating art installations and
playrooms on every floor, to helping siblings, as well as patients
cope with a child’s illness or injury, the range of non-medical services
Children’s offers is part of Children’s mission to offer every child the
best chance for a healthy future.
For more information about Planned Giving to benefit
The Children’s Hospital, please contact Leslie Schaeffer,
at [email protected] or 720.777.1717.
The two gifts provided Mildred, a former telephone operator, with
a way to honor her late husband, William, a Boulder barber and
cabinetmaker. She and William had no children of their own, but saved
and invested wisely over their lifetime, giving them the opportunity
late in their lives to support organizations that benefit others.
“Mrs. Nienaber’s gift was one of the highlights of our year,” said Steve
Winesett, president and CEO of The Children’s Hospital Foundation.
“Her thoughtful and generous planning will impact the quality of
care the hospital provides to children day after day, year after year, for
generations to come.”

Endowments
Donors who establish endowed chairs
and funds enable the hospital to focus
more of its resources on growth for areas
of care that bring long-range benefits for
children’s health.
By the end of 2010, donors increased the
number of endowments at Children’s to
26 endowed chairs and 77 endowed funds.
These endowments will help provide
increased sustainability for important
research, education and clinical programs.
Several endowed funds established in 2010
were inspired by the Gates Frontiers Fund
challenge, which supports basic research in
the area of pediatric stem cell biology. The
Elizabeth B. Searle and Family Endowed Fund
in Pediatric Stem Cell Biology, the David and
Tomme Kaplan and Family Endowed Fund
in Pediatric Stem Cell Biology, the Laura and
Douglas Wright Family Fund in Pediatric
Stem Cell Biology, and an anonymous
donor each established their funds in
2010. All advance the promise of better
treatments and cures for a wide range
of childhood diseases.
“The Children’s Hospital Foundation
received a wide range of gifts in 2010.
Whether large or small, these gifts support
Children’s patients directly, as well as
Children’s national and international
reputation for excellence in pediatric care,
research, education and advocacy.”
The Wagner Family Chair in Childhood
Diabetes paves the way for new
collaborations between The Children’s
Hospital and the Barbara Davis Center
for Childhood Diabetes, with the aim of
improving care for patients with diabetes.
Additionally, The Arnold Silverman, MD
Endowed Chair in Digestive Health
supports ongoing research in
gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition
to help discover treatments for rare pediatric
digestive health diseases under chairholder
Dr. Ronald J. Sokol.

Janie and Rick Stoddard
are among the many
visionary individuals
who contribute annually
to Children’s. The Abby
Stoddard Lectureship in
Neurology, one of two
educational events they
help to fund, was the
premiere educational
program of its kind in
2010, according to Dr. Amy Brooks-Kayal,
Chief of Pediatric Neurology at Children’s
and holder of The Ponzio Family Chair in
Pediatric Neurology.
“It supports bringing the world’s preeminent
pediatric neurologists to Children’s for three
days of interaction with our faculty and
trainees, and provides us with invaluable
education and interactions that further our
knowledge and ability to provide the best
care for our patients,” said Dr. Brooks-Kayal.
Individual giving
Donors who make donations over a long
period of time often have far-reaching
effects. Harry Syer, 95, has been a Children’s
Circle of Care member since 1997. A donor
since 1992 who gives in memory of his
brother, who died in World War II, Harry has
established three charitable gift annuities
with Children’s and included the hospital
in his estate plan. His giving will benefit
generations of children to come.
Foundation and
corporate partnerships
Family foundation gifts in 2010 included the
completion of a $250,000 gift by The LARRK
Foundation in honor of the Journayvaz
family’s eldest daughter, Auna, a Children’s
scoliosis patient. The LARRK Foundation gift
supports the work of researcher Dr. Nancy
Miller. Dr. Miller’s study of the genetics of
idiopathic scoliosis has the potential to
benefit thousands of children who suffer
from the disease.

A look back
Children’s Classic at Sanctuary
The Cydney and Tom Marsico Family
Foundation made their final pledge payment
in 2010 toward a $1 million commitment
to enhance a program of care for one of
the most vulnerable segments of the
population – teen mothers and their children.
The Marsico gift has enabled the hospital to
provide a unique model of group care that
draws on more than 30 years of research
to provide enhanced medical and social
support to young families.
A $400,000 gift from The Colorado Trust
granted this past year will help bolster child
health safety and advocacy efforts across the
state of Colorado. Through traditional and
social media, as well as events like Health
Care Summits, workshops and “Day at the
Capitol” outings for mothers, the gift will help
Children’s engage diverse groups of parents
across the state to become more active in
children’s health issues.
Corporations and corporate foundations
made more than 2,400 gifts to the hospital
in 2010. For example, Children’s and Walgreen
Co. partnered to raise money on behalf of
children and families, raising over $250,000
in their first campaign last September.
Community events
Individuals and groups from the community
made the Foundation’s 2010 signature events,
including Courage Classic, Children’s Classic at
Sanctuary, Gala and Giddy-Up Gala, a success.
Collectively, our community gave over $5.5
million to the hospital in 2010 through these
four events.
And even the dollar-a-day donations added
up through Children’s Miracle Network
Hospitals’ (CMNH) annual Alice’s 36 Hours for
Kids radiothon, donors gave $1.65 million.
The second-annual CMNH Spanish language
radiothon, Para Los Niños, raised more than
$339,000 for Children’s patients.
Looking forward
Our community’s generosity over the past
year has signaled an ongoing commitment
to enhancing and expanding the programs
and services Children’s provides for kids and
their families.
As Children’s builds a new East Tower to
accommodate the growing numbers of
patients, the Foundation remains committed
to a strong and growing future. We continue
to work to establish a new mothers and
babies program that will support high-risk
pregnant mothers and their newborns,
and continue to seek out new ways to
improve the treatment and care we provide
to patients and families through research,
patient care, advocacy and education.
Giddy-Up Gala
Courage Classic
In light of the new initiatives and opportunities
that lie ahead, the Foundation is partnering
with friends throughout Children’s community.

Celebrating a
decade on the air
Jacob's
Alice’s 36 Hours for Kids
raises $1.65 million
story
Ten-year-old Jacob Cohen was among
the patients who appeared in the
debut Alice’s event in 2002.
Diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma
when he was only 1 year old he
endured intense chemotherapy,
surgeries, radiation and a bone
marrow transplant to fight his cancer.
His battle was further complicated
when he became ill with roto-virus.
While fighting the virus, he suffered
respiratory arrest, a stroke, and as a
result permanently lost eyesight in
his right eye.
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ 10th annual Alice’s
36 Hours for Kids radiothon once again rallied the community to
support Children’s patients and families during a moving three-day
event that raised an amazing $1.65 million for The Children’s
Hospital Foundation’s Children’s Fund.
“Alice’s 36 Hours for Kids is such an inspiring event thanks to all the families who are willing to
come forward and share their personal stories on the air,” said Melissa Doremus, director of
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at The Children’s Hospital Foundation.
“We are always in awe of how generously the community responds to the event, and this year
was no exception. This year’s radiothon brought in more fundraising support than ever before,
and this was due in no small part to the team from Alice 105.9, who once again put their heart
and soul into making Alice’s 36 Hours for Kids an outstanding event,” she said.
Year after year, DJs and staff from Alice 105.9 donate air time and multimedia support to allow
Children’s patients and families to share stories over the airwaves. Radiothon is generously
underwritten nationally by Foresters, allowing all of the funds raised through the event to
directly support the patients treated at Children’s. More than 720 community volunteers and
sponsors donate their time to staff the radiothon phone banks, and countless others work
behind the scenes to make this three-day event a success.
Jake has fought hard and beat great odds.
Jacob is now cancer free, 10 years
after his struggle against cancer
began. Telling his story on the air was
a fitting celebration of all the ways
Children’s helped him back to health.
6 Giving To Children’s • Spring 2011
Listeners from around the greater Denver area look forward to the event as a way to support
their community and the families who need the hospital. Each year, the event brings in
much-needed support to Children’s programs. After a decade on air, the fundraising total
for Alice’s 36 Hours for Kids is more than $11 million.

Children’s awarded The Colorado Trust Grant
to build support for improving
health care
Just as The Children’s Hospital
believes all children deserve
a happy, healthy childhood,
The Colorado Trust believes
Coloradans want health
coverage and care they can
count on to live healthier lives.
Thanks to a $400,000 grant from The
Colorado Trust to Children’s, families around
the state will have more opportunities to
understand all the ways they can strengthen
health care in their own lives.
Over the next three years, Children’s
Health Advocacy Initiative (CHAI) will use
The Colorado Trust grant to fund
communications, advocacy and leadership
activities around the state.
At home, at school, in neighborhoods and
as patients, children’s health and safety are
the key focus of CHAI’s mission. By
developing new programs and building on
existing community outreach activities, the
main goal of Children’s efforts will be to help
spark interest and greater understanding
of children’s health issues among families.
Through outreach to women and mothers,
Children’s will help families discover how to
make their voice heard on health care issues
through social and traditional media. For
example, by joining Children’s Grassroots
Advocacy Network, families can take action
on specific issues. They will also be able to
share ideas in town hall meetings and
workshops with Colorado leaders to help
families improve health care in their community.
“Children’s has demonstrated the ability
to reach and influence a number of key
audiences over the years,” says Deb
Federspiel, director of Children’s Health
Advocacy Institute. “By using similar public
will-building and engagement strategies
on other community outreach campaigns,
“The Children’s Hospital
was recently granted a
$400,000 gift to help
promote family and
children’s health throughout
the state.”
including the Kohl’s Shaken Baby Syndrome
Prevention Campaign and the Colorado
Healthcare Affordability Act, we can play
a significant role in framing these issues,
building awareness and engaging the
public in improving health coverage
and care.”
Children’s estimates that it will reach at least
1 million people over the three year period
that the grant is in effect. These outreach
efforts will include educating Colorado
families about children’s health and safety
as well as what specific provisions of federal
health reform will mean for the health
coverage and care Colorado’s children receive.
From the perspective of The Colorado
Trust and its funding partner, The Colorado
Health Foundation, Children’s involvement
can help individuals across the state gain an
improved understanding of the
complicated issues surrounding health care
that might otherwise stand in the way of
creating healthier communities, and get
involved in helping to make and sustain
improvements to the health care system.
“Coloradans want to know that the care we
receive from a doctor, nurse or other health
care provider is high quality. We also want
to be able to get an appointment to see our
doctor in a reasonable amount of time. And
we want to know that the health care we
receive is affordable," said Dr. Ned Calonge,
president and CEO of The Colorado Trust.
“These common-sense goals are absolutely
achievable if more Coloradans receive
clear, unbiased information about health
coverage and care, and speak up about
what they like and what needs to be fixed
in our health care system.
"The more people understand, the better
positioned they become to help shape the
delivery, the process and the quality of their
health care,” said Anne Warhover, president
and CEO of The Colorado Health
Foundation, which contributed additional
funds to The Colorado Trust’s grant
program. “In turn, this enhances our ability
to help make Colorado the healthiest
state in the nation.”

Meet our 2011 Ambassadors
Austin, 13
Iliff
When Austin was 12 years old,
he was bucked and trampled
by a bull during a young rodeo
riders’ event. Despite wearing a
helmet, his severe head injuries
were nearly fatal. At Children’s,
the emergency team induced
a coma to help stabilize Austin’s
condition. He spent the next
eight weeks at the hospital,
receiving treatment from more
than 15 specialty areas that
helped bring Austin back to
health. Charming and grateful,
Austin still visits Children’s for
outpatient care. Compared to
his original injuries, few
challenges remain in the way
of his recovery.
Each year, Children’s caregivers nominate hospital
patients to serve as ambassadors for Children’s
at Foundation and community events. This year,
ambassadors represent several specialty areas: the
Burn Program, the Center for Cancer and Blood
Disorders, the Emergency Department, the Heart
Institute, the Hospital Sports Program and the
Kidney Center.

that cut her treatment short.
She then had eight surgeries,
most recently receiving a
titanium rod in her arm and
new reverse shoulder. Despite
her challenges, Emily remains
active in sports and school,
and loves the hospital and
even plays practical jokes
on the nurses.
Kyle, 6

Emily, 11
Lakewood
Outgoing and fun-loving,
Emily does not seem like a girl
who has cancer. But just after
finishing her soccer season in
2006, she complained of a sore
arm. An x-ray revealed a tumor
and she was soon diagnosed
with osteosarcoma. Emily went

Kyle was born with Russell-Silver
syndrome. When he was 4 years
old, he was also diagnosed with
pulmonary hypertension. Today,
Kyle is being treated with
various oral medications and
an experimental inhaled
therapy. As his condition
improves, he remains outgoing,
courageous and active as ever,
taking life in stride. Kyle loves
swimming and riding his bike
with his dad.
Morgan, 10
Breckenridge
Diagnosed at age 6 with acute
kidney failure, Morgan’s parents
chose to learn how to perform
dialysis at home to treat his
condition. When Morgan began
having seizures and other
complications, he was soon
spending three days of each
week at Children’s. Shortly after
his seventh birthday, Morgan
received a successful kidney
transplant. Since then, his health
has greatly improved. Today,
he’s an avid sports fan who
never misses a chance to say
hello to the nurses, or to other
patients, whenever he is back
at Children’s clinics.
Nathan, 12
Parker
Nathan and his brother were
riding all-terrain vehicles (ATV)
together when Nathan crashed
and was pinned to the ground
by his ATV. His brother was able
to rescue Nathan but not before
he suffered 3rd degree burn
injuries to his arm. Nathan’s
treatment at Children’s has
included a skin graft and
challenging occupational
therapy to help him move his
arm again. He has called on his
strength and sense of humor
throughout his rehabilitation,
and is making a movie to teach
other kids about burn injuries.
Sophie, 15
Lafayette
Sophie was diagnosed with
lymphoblastic lymphoma in
July 1999 when she was 4 years
old. Her treatment consisted
of two years of intensive
chemotherapy and other painful
procedures. Now a cancer
survivor, she is an active and
healthy high school sophomore
and even volunteers at
Children’s in the summers.
2010
Annual
Rep–rt
In 2010 The Children’s Hospital touched the lives of
more than 158,000 infants, children and teens – more
patients than ever before. Almost 40,000 donors gave
more than 108,000 gifts – the most we have ever
received. We see hope and possibilities

Meet
Sam
When Sam was diagnosed with Crohn’s
disease in 2007, he couldn’t keep
anything in his stomach. When his
doctor at The Children's Hospital
Digestive Health Institute suggested
a clinical trial that could help him, his
parents jumped at the opportunity.
Sam was the first patient at Children’s
to enroll in the Crohn’s research trial.
The trial is studying a drug that has
been approved by the FDA for use in
adults and has great potential for
helping kids.
"The trial study has been fantastic,
especially the staff and Dr. Hoffenberg,"
said his mother, Julie. "Sam has energy,
he's social, focused on school and
his personality is back – he's a
teenager again."

Your support translates
into excellence
(Continued from page 9)
You, our generous community, gave a marathon amount, $26.2 million, and continued
to grow our long-term endowment.
These gifts not only help children and families – they support Children’s reputation
as a leader in pediatric health care.
In the past year, The Children’s Hospital once again ranked among the nation’s top
pediatric hospitals in U.S. News & World Report. To meet the growing needs of
children and families around our seven-state region, Children’s continues to expand
physically – through the main hospital’s East Tower construction project and Network
of Care growth – as well as through a variety of essential services and programs.
Children’s doctors and faculty are winning awards and accolades for their outstanding
care, our advocacy programs are achieving national recognition for making kids’ lives
safer, and Children’s commitment to research is expanding awareness of the groundbreaking studies taking place on campus each day.
We have much to celebrate as we reflect on the past year, and Children’s could not have
achieved so much without the generous support of each individual, foundation and
corporation who gave to the hospital between January 1 and December 31, 2010.

The Charles C. Gates Society recognizes extraordinary donors of $1 million or more over a lifetime. A generous
philanthropist, Mr. Gates believed in transformational giving as an investment in a community and a cause.
He was a longtime supporter of the hospital, and until his death in 2005 he served as honorary chair of The Imagine
the Miracles Campaign for The Children’s Hospital. Over the years, the entire Gates family has given generously of
both their time and treasure. We are profoundly grateful to the following donors who have made a tremendous
investment in children’s health and who, in so doing, have honored the memory of Charles C. Gates.

Mae B. Boettcher Society
The Mae B. Boettcher Society recognizes individuals, families, corporations, foundations, associations, and
organizations who have contributed $250,000 to $999,999 throughout their lifetimes to The Children’s
Hospital. Mae Boettcher’s passion and generous philanthropic support for The Children’s Hospital stemmed
from her service on Children’s Board of Directors from 1951 until 1976. She touched the lives of many children
through her philanthropy. Likewise, Boettcher Society donors have committed to The Children’s Hospital as
the leader in providing the best healthcare outcomes for children in our community.

Giving To Children’s • Spring 2011 13
Annual donors of $10,000 or more and Children’s Circle of Care
The Children’s Hospital Foundation gratefully acknowledges donors who made gifts of $10,000 or more and
those who qualify for membership in Children’s Circle of Care.
In 1995, The Children’s Hospital joined other leading pediatric hospitals across the United States and Canada
to form Children’s Circle of Care (CCC). By recognizing individuals, family foundations and private corporations
giving $10,000 or more annually, CCC highlights the role of philanthropy in assuring excellence in pediatric
healthcare. In 2010, local members contributed nearly $14 million to Children’s.

Charlie
Ten-year-old Charlie has cystic fibrosis, a life-altering disease that affects
his lungs and digestion. For now, Charlie takes up to 15 pills daily and
wears a vest that shakes his body to keep his airways clear. But recent
research advances by Children’s physician-scientists are leading to new
experimental cystic fibrosis treatments – and possibly a cure for the
disease in Charlie’s lifetime.

The Arnold Silverman, MD Endowed Chair
in Digestive Health
November 4, 2010 marked the formal celebration and dedication
of The Arnold Silverman, MD Endowed Chair in Digestive Health at
The Children’s Hospital. The evening paid tribute to two widely
recognized pediatric specialists, Dr. Arnold Silverman, the chair’s
namesake, and Dr. Ronald J. Sokol, chairholder. Both doctors are leaders
in the field of digestive health.
Dr. Arnold Silverman (left) and
Dr. Ronald J. Sokol (right)
Dr. Sokol is the inaugural
chairholder of The Arnold
Silverman, MD Endowed Chair
in Digestive Health.
“I am pleased that the community has acknowledged the importance of
an endowed chair in the area of digestive health and even more excited
to know that this endowed chair will support the work of Dr. Sokol.”
“This fund will allow Dr. Sokol to enhance the impressive research
undertakings he already has underway, which will ultimately impact
the lives of the many children served locally and around the world,” said
Steve Winesett, president and CEO of The Children’s Hospital Foundation.
The Silverman Chair, one of 26 at The Children’s Hospital, was established
by an anonymous donor to support clinical care, research and education
in the areas of gatroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Children’s.

Endowed Chairs and Endowed Funds
The Children’s Hospital is indebted to the individuals who establish endowed chairs and funds—the backbone
of any healthy institution. These generous individuals ensure that Children's has the perpetual capacity to
innovate new treatments and cures while providing top-notch care in a family-centered environment. Because
the interest earned on these funds is available year after year, children and families will benefit long after the
initial gift is made. We gratefully recognize donors who have contributed $250,000 or more to an endowed chair
and donors who have contributed $10,000 or more to an endowed fund.

Griers’ support becomes
personal
Bridget and John Grier made their first
Children’s Circle of Care gift after Bridget came
home from a Girls Day Out event and tour of
The Children’s Hospital Center for Cancer and
Blood Disorders in 2007. As parents of two
healthy young boys, they felt fortunate that
they had not needed the hospital’s care.
During the tour, Child Life Specialist Tommi
McHugh talked about the need for funds to
hire an additional Child Life Specialist to work
with patients in Children’s Center for Cancer
and Blood Disorders. Child Life Specialists
help ease patient anxiety by providing
engaging toys, music or activities during a
child’s hospital treatment. The therapists also
assist in more emotionally complicated situations.

Moved by what they learned, the Griers
decided to make what John called their first
significant gift to any organization by making
a $10,000 gift to Children’s.
“I want a parent who is standing in Children’s
hallway to feel like they have done the best
they could by sending their child to this
hospital,” said John. “There is no better place
for a child who needs care than Children’s.”
Since then both of the Griers’ sons have
received services at Children’s, and their
commitment has become more personal.
They have graciously increased their support
for the hospital with gifts to The Children’s
Hospital Gala and the recent MAX Fashion Show.
“Children’s has a story that we know firsthand,” Bridget said. “We feel that we have
made a difference in helping more kids
receive the best care.”
