SPRING 2015
The plants are looking good and there are plenty of buds on the little European
primulas. We are still busy taking offsets and repotting our collections.
We sowed a lot of primula and auricula seed at the beginning of 2014 and we
had excellent germination. We started pricking out the seedlings in early May
and carried on with this task throughout the summer of 2014. We now have a
good selection of Barnhaven Primroses and Polyanthus, bog primulas, Birds
Eye Primulas and some other more unusual species many of which will be
available in Spring 2015.

AURICULA and PRIMULA
COLLECTION
and DESCRIPTIVE LIST
FIELD HOUSE NURSERY is a specialist nursery in a rural setting in the village of Gotham.
It is situated near to the M1 (East Midlands Airport exit - J24) and is within easy reach of most of
the Midlands; we are only two hours drive from London.
We sell auricula and primula plants directly from the nursery, at Plant Fairs and we can bring orders
to shows. THERE IS NO MAIL ORDER SERVICE FOR AURICULA and PRIMULA
PLANTS.
This new descriptive list is for reference only and it gives details of many of the auriculas and
primulas which we grow at Field House. Some are available throughout the year, but others
are produced in small numbers and can disappear from the list very rapidly. Some are
available as seed only. When placing orders please consult our availability lists which tell you
what is in stock month by month. WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO SUPPLY PLANTS WHICH
ARE SELECTED FROM THE AURICULA and PRIMULA AVAILABILITY LISTS. These
are updated throughout the year and may be obtained by sending us a large SAE or by
requesting them in electronic form. The auricula and primula availability list is also at the
end of this web page.
An excellent selection of seed of primula and auricula is available by mail order or from the
nursery (please give seven days notice if you wish to collect your seed order).
We supply auriculas to the historic Auricula Theatre at Calke Abbey, Ticknall, Derbyshire
(National Trust); the auriculas can be seen on the Theatre from around the second week of April
until the middle of May (weather permitting). We are also organisers of Specialist Plant Sales in the
Midlands Region; our events are well-known and well supported!
If you wish to visit us and are coming from some distance it is advisable to telephone beforehand as
we are often out at plant fairs. There will be somebody at the nursery on these occasions but if you
wish to talk plants with us it is better to avoid these dates. We look forward to seeing you during the
coming season.

AURICULAS and PRIMULAS at FIELD HOUSE

PROGRESS and GOOD NEWS We are building up our stocks of primulas again and the
auricula collection goes from strength to strength. Bob Taylor joined us 2008 and his National
Collection of Astrantias is on display at the nursery. He sells Astrantias and is also assisting
with the cultivation of auriculas and primulas.

COLLECTION Our collection of over 800 named Show, Alpine, Border and Double Auriculas
is on display here. It has taken nearly twenty five years of seemingly endless dividing and
repotting to get to this stage but it has been well worth the effort.

NATIONAL COLLECTION We hold a National Collection of ‘Primula auricula Hort.
Shows and Alpines’. This may be viewed BY APPOINTMENT ONLY in April and May.

OPEN DAYS We used to hold Special Auricula Open Days in April and sometimes in May. On
these occasions the auricula stock tunnels were open to the public and our displays have been
much admired by many visitors from far and wide. Sadly my husband, Jack, passed away about
two years ago and it has not been possible to reinstate the Open Days as yet.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS A small greenhouse is home to our ever-growing collection of
Primula marginata forms and Bob has spent a good deal of time helping me to build up our
collection of P.allionii cultivars and small European primulas. Our tunnels and greenhouses are
called after famous castles so we have Alnwick, Windsor, Balmoral, Dover and Edinburgh to
name but a few! We also have Castle Douglas, but that is another story!

SUCCESS Thanks to Bob’s efforts we successfully exhibited our auriculas and astrantias in the
Plant Heritage (NCCPG) marquee at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in July 2010 and July
2011. We have also exhibited at Gardeners World Live at the NEC.

WHAT WE SELL We offer a fine selection of auriculas all raised from offsets in the
traditional manner. Around 350 named varieties are usually available at any one time. A range
of Primula allionii cultivars and European Hybrids is always available along with P. marginata
forms and P. x pubescens hybrids. The ever popular double primroses also feature in our
catalogue along with a good selection of bog primulas.
Our aim is to appeal to the beginner and the experienced grower alike and we are
always prepared to give advice where it is needed. Why not come and see our plants?
We look forward to seeing you.
GIFT VOUCHERS
We offer attractive vouchers in three values - £10, £15 or £20. Why not treat a friend
or relative! These may be exchanged at the nursery for Field House plants or seed
.

TERMS
ORDERING Please use the form which accompanies the availability list for your plant orders.
Telephoned orders can be accepted during business hours only; please have your Credit Card or
Debit Card details ready, along with a list of the plants which you require. Emailed orders should
contain a list of plants required with their prices. For seed orders please consult the separate seed
list and order form.
PAYMENT with order please. Please note that the minimum total order is 4 plants. A limit cheque
is the most convenient form of payment as it saves time and paper work. On the SECOND amount
line write the total cost of your order in capitals e.g. "NOT TO EXCEED TWENTY POUNDS".
You will, of course, be notified of the amount which we fill in. Please make cheques payable to
Field House Nursery. We are also able to accept payment by most major Credit and Debit Cards.
Please note that orders are only acknowledged on receipt of a stamped addressed envelope.
SUBSTITUTES If you are prepared to accept substitutes please list them on the order form. Many
customers make a cheque out for the full amount but do not list substitutes; we do not issue refunds
and reserve the right to substitute at our discretion in these cases. Please note that where we offer
plants in mixture it is not possible to supply individual colours!
COLLECTION Orders may be collected from the nursery but please give seven days notice.

AURICULAS
The auricula is a unique florists’ flower which was introduced into England around
1575, possibly by Flemish weavers who were settling in Lancashire in towns like
Rochdale and Middleton. Roy Genders in ‘Collecting Antique Plants’ comments that
the auricula has ‘an exotic beauty’ which in the words of Thomas Hogg, Florist of
Paddington Green, London ‘seems to engross our undivided attention’. The various
types of auricula have gone in and out of fashion over the centuries but at the present
time the cultivation of all forms of these plants is enjoyed by vast numbers of
enthusiasts both in the United Kingdom and overseas. We have been growing
auriculas for many years and along the way we have found ourselves involved in
many exciting projects such as growing the auriculas for the theatre at Calke Abbey.
We have also been to The Royal Library at Windsor Castle to see books like Mr
Marshall’s Flower Album and other ancient works devoted to these wonderful
flowers. Growing auriculas can be addictive – so beware!

TYPES OF AURICULA
If you are new to auriculas you probably feel overwhelmed by the terminology and
the huge choice of varieties available; the following information may therefore be of
interest. Auriculas are divided into two main classes - SHOW and ALPINE; the
remainder are classified as either DOUBLE or BORDER auriculas. All may be
grown in pots in a cold greenhouse or frame - indeed this is preferable for those with
paste (see below) as they spoil if exposed to the weather. Borders are more suited to
outdoor cultivation; alpines, some doubles and even some fancies may also be grown
in this way. Much has been written about the cultivation of these plants and we refer
you to the books listed above. Good advice may also be found in the booklets
published by The National Auricula and Primula Society (Midland and West Section)
SHOW AURICULAS all possess a ring of white farina (paste or meal) at the centre
of the flower. They may be divided into the following groups:(1) SELFS - here the remainder of the petal is one colour (body colour) and may be
red, dark red, yellow, blue, purple or pink. Recent breeding has added brown and
orange to the colour range.
(2) GREEN, GREY or WHITE EDGED - here the body colour is usually black and
feathers out into an edge of green, grey (light covering of farina) or white (dense
farina). A recent development has been the acceptance of body colours in any
bright clear colour, except yellow.
(3) STRIPED auriculas have a central zone of paste and the remainder of the petal is
striped. The striping may arise from petal tissue or from a deposit of farina. Great
advances have been made in the breeding of stripes and there is now a vast range
of colour combinations which can include red, yellow, blue, violet, brown,
orange, white, cream and green .
(4) FANCY - these are edged auriculas which do not conform to any of the other
types of show auricula. The edge may be green, grey or white. There have
recently been interesting developments with the breeding of fancy auriculas and
many new and exciting forms have been introduced e.g. Cloud Fancies.
ALPINE AURICULAS have no paste on the flowers or leaves and are traditionally
divided into two types according to the circle of colour at the centre of the flower :(a) LIGHT CENTRED (white or pale cream)
(b) GOLD CENTRED (rich golden yellow)
The remainder of the petal is a bright colour (red, blue, brown, orange, pink or
purple) usually in two shades with the paler shade at the edge of the petal. Some
alpines have very little or no shading.
5
There are also classes for LACED ALPINES and FANCY ALPINES at some
shows.
DOUBLE AURICULAS exhibit a wide range of forms varying from simple
"camellia" shapes to very heavily doubled forms. The older, well-known doubles are
mostly yellow or purple shades but the range of colours is increasing all the time with
white, pinks, reds, lilacs, blues and browns all making an appearance! There are also
some striped and flaked doubles.
BORDER AURICULAS are a large and varied group. They are usually scented and
come in a wide range of colours. Some have a thin ring of paste at the centre of the
flowers while others do not. They frequently have handsome, mealy leaves. All are
tough garden plants.
These are the varieties that we grow and which form our National Collection. Please do not order
plants from this list. An availability list of auriculas and primulas will be published in March.

PRIMULAS
19
There are over 500 species of Primula and a multitude of hybrids all with varying
needs. We have therefore grouped them according to their cultural needs. The plants
are also divided into those of Asiatic or European origin as most of the useful
literature on primulas is in this form.
The following books are useful for descriptive and cultural information about this
fascinating genus. Some are out of print but they are worth seeking out.
A PLANTSMAN'S GUIDE TO PRIMULAS by P.Swindell (1989); Ward Lock.
ASIATIC PRIMULAS by Roy Green (1976); Alpine Garden Society Publication.
HARDY PRIMULAS by H. G. Lyall (1959); Collingridge.
PRIMROSES AND POLYANTHUS by P. Ward (1997); Batsford.
PRIMULA by J. Richards (1993) ; Batsford Books. Revised 2003: Timber Press.
PRIMULAS - THE COMPLETE GUIDE by M. A. Robinson (1990); Crowood.
PRIMULAS by A. G .Puttock (1957); Garden Book Club .
PRIMULAS OF EUROPE AND AMERICA by G. F. Smith, B. Burrow and D. B.
Lowe (1984); Alpine Garden Society Publication.
PRIMULAS OLD AND NEW by J. Wemyss-Cooke; David and Charles.
THE BOOK of PRIMROSES by Barbara Shaw (1991) David and Charles
THE GENUS PRIMULA IN CULTIVATION AND IN THE WILD by J.J.Halda
(1992); Tethys Books, Denver, USA
If you are hooked on primulas and auriculas do please consider joining The National
Auricula and Primula Society (NAPS for short!). Details are given on page 19 of this
catalogue. As well as organising auricula and primula shows, each section produces a
yearbook which contains excellent articles on all aspects of growing and showing.
They also have excellent web sites with pictures of plants from the shows. We are
active members of the Midland and West Section and also founder members of a
lively local group - The East Midlands Group.
Please note that the descriptive primula list contains information
about a wide range of species and hybrids. Please consult our
availability list to see what we have for sale. For some species we have
seed available, but not plants.

EUROPEAN PRIMULAS
FOR ALPINE HOUSE, ROCK GARDEN, TROUGH, SCREE etc
These spring-flowering plants prefer a position in rich, moist but well-drained soil; like all primulas
they should not dry out in summer. Many are suited to alpine house cultivation, indeed the cultivars
of P.allionii should always have overhead protection. Some of the hybrids of allionii are more
robust and may be grown outside in troughs and screes. All the plants in this section make good
pans for exhibiting at Shows.
PRIMULA ALLIONII FORMS
These lovely alpine house plants flower in early spring (January to March). They make low
cushions of green or grey-green leaves studded or almost completely covered with almost stem-less
flowers. They must always be grown with overhead protection. They flower from February onwards
and are superb plants for exhibiting at shows. Grow them in a well-drained ‘alpine’ compost. Some
growers use equal parts of John Innes No: 2 and sharp grit. Our collection is vast and other
varieties will appear from time to time - check our availability list!
'ANNA GRIFFITH' Distinctive, pale pink, frilly flowers.
‘CLAUDE FLIGHT’ Pinkish-violet diffusing to an off white centre.
'ELIZABETH BAKER' Very pale pink, gradating to white centre. Pin eyed.
'FANFARE' Mauve-pink, thrum-eyed flowers. Early flowering
'FORMA' Mauve with small white eye. Thrum eyed.
'HOCKER EDGE' Mauve-purple, pin-eyed flowers. Attractive variety which makes a neat
rounded cushion of rosettes.
'HUNTSMAN' Lilac with indistinct white eye. Pin-eyed
'INGWERSEN'S FORM' Starry mauve-pink flowers shading to a white eye. Pin.
'KEN'S SEEDLING' Large, pale lavender, white-eyed flowers. Pin-eyed
'LISMORE 81/19/2' Deep magenta-pink, white-eyed flowers over soft grey-green leaves.
'LISMORE 81/19/3' Pink, white-eyed flowers
'LISMORE 87/3/2' The flowers open deep pink and fade to pale mauve-pink with a white centre.
Another super plant from the Lismore stable.
'MARION' Neat funnel-shaped, mauve-pink flowers. Pin-eyed
'MARJORIE WOOSTER' Large mauve-pink flowers with wavy edges and white centres.
'MARY BERRY' Rich crimson-purple flowers with a starry white eye. Late flowering.
'MRS DYAS' Late flowering form with mauve-pink, starry-eyed flowers. Makes a neat, flat
cushion of neat grey-green rosettes
'SARACEN' Tight domes of small grey-green leaves studded with small mauve-purple flowers.
'SCIMITAR' Low cushions of small grey-green leaves covered with small, neat mauve flowers. A
most attractive, slow growing variety.
'SNOWFLAKE' Glistening white, wavy-edged petals which become pink as they age. Thrum.
'TRANQUILLITY' Pale bluish-lavender flowers with a distinct eye
EUROPEAN PRIMULA HYBRIDS
Some of these hybrids are quite robust and may be grown outside in troughs and screes. A welldrained loam based compost should be used but with less grit than for the P. allionii cultivars. All
the plants in this section are excellent for exhibition. They mostly flower in March / April although
some may start to flower in early February, depending on the weather conditions.
'AIRE MIST' Large creamy-white flowers over neat, deep green foliage. Tough.
'AIRE WAVES' Very similar to 'Aire Mist' but with wavy petals and the plant blooms about three
weeks earlier.
'ALEXINA' Large rose-purple, white eyed flowers. Raised at the Hartside Nursery.
21
ALLIONII x HIRSUTA A compact hybrid which is in between the parents. Flowers are pink
with white eye. An easy plant for alpine house or trough
ALLIONII x MARGINATA Deep mauve, funnel-shaped flowers and dark green leaves
sometimes lightly edged with meal. Flowers in early spring. We have several forms of this cross.
ALLIONII x 'OLD RED DUSTY MILLER' Dark reddish-pink, yellow eyed flowers; dark green
leaves. Tough!
ALLIONII x PEDEMONTANA A small hybrid with lilac flowers and rosettes of neat, deep
green leaves. Alpine house or trough
ALLIONII x 'WHITE LINDA POPE ' This lovely hybrid was raised by Joe Elliott. Joe was the
son of Clarence Elliott and his Broadwell Nursery at Moreton in Marsh in Gloucestershire was
world famous. From this nursery came a legendary collection of hybrids which were initially
released with clone numbers e.g. Bee Cross No:6. They are from P. allionii x ‘P. ‘White Linda
Pope’ and according to Joe it was the Broadwell bees that did the pollinating for him! What clever
bees he had. Joe named ‘Clarence Elliott’ and ‘Jo-Jo’ and later agreed to names for several other
worthy seedlings. All are showy and free flowering. The plant which we offer bears large flowers
of a good clear pink with a white eye.
'BEATRICE WOOSTER' Rosettes of slightly sticky leaves and masses of light pink, white- eyed
flowers. Easy.
'BROXBOURNE' Slow-growing but reliable old variety with large, pin-eyed, lavender-pink
flowers.

subject for exhibition.
‘EARLY BIRD’ Pale lilac flowers over attractive foliage. One of the first to flower.
'ELLEN PAGE' Small reddish-purple flowers with a dusting of white meal and tight, somewhat
ragged rosettes of small leaves.

white-eyed flowers on short stems over broadly toothed leaves. P. allionii x P. hirsuta.
'GARNET' Rich pink, white eyed flowers in clusters over toothed green leaves. Free flowering.
'HEMSWELL BLUSH' Loose heads of pale pink, yellow-eyed flowers. A larger plant from the
same cross which produced 'Hemswell Ember'. Raised by Martin Nest Nursery
'JACKIE RICHARDS' An attractive hybrid with pale lilac-blue flowers in loose clusters over
rosettes of shiny, toothed green leaves.
'JO-JO' Large blue-lilac flowers with a creamy yellow eye. An excellent plant for showing.
'LEA GARDENS' Large, pure white flowers with a pink tinge to the edge of the petals.
'LEE MYERS' Small, bright pink, slightly ruffled flowers over neat rosettes of grey-green leaves.
Bulks up quickly. Raised by the late Len Bailey.
‘LINDUM CREPE SUZETTE’ A marvellous exhibition plant which forms a low cushion
smothered with tight heads of pretty lilac-pink, white eyed flowers. Raised by Dreena and Martin
Thompson.
'LINDUM MOONLIGHT' Small pale blue flower from January to March. Raised by Dreena and
Martin Thompson who prefix their plants with 'Lindum' which is an ancient word for Lincoln.
'LISMORE 87/6' Deep pinkish-mauve flowers with a small starry white eye. Slightly ruffled
petals. Best grown with protection.
'LISMORE TREASURE' Very compact hybrid with distinctive yellow-eyed flowers of a rich
purplish-red. Makes a low, slow growing cushion.
