Bromyard Rugby Club January Newsletter Welcome to the latest issue of the monthly newsletter. The idea of this is to keep everyone in the Club up-to-date with what is happening in the various teams. This is very much a work-in-progress, and as the months go by, I imagine the content of this newsletter will change. Thanks to all of the contributors, and if anyone has any ideas on how it could be improved, other information which should be included and/or any constructive criticism, let me know. The next issue will be after the completion of games at the end of February, so I will be chasing people for news/updates in early March… Team News 1st XV 2nd XV Ladies Touch Rugby Girls (U15) Touch Rugby Leaving Bromyard with a covering of snow the girls travelled to Berkswell & Balsall RFC in Warwickshire for their first fixture playing in a tag festival with 12 teams. The first game was against Evesham who have an experienced squad and got through to the final. When settled into the game the girls put in some great runs and brought the final score back to 7-4, try scorers Ayden, Little Imogen, Sasha and Abbie. The second game was against Berkswell & Balsall and the girls put in a good performance, it was a close match 4-2, try scorers Abbie and Ayden. In the final game the girls were winning at half time against Old Laurentians, with a few unfortunate decisions the final score was 6-4, this was another close game and the final score doesn't reflect how well the team played, try scorers Ayden (2), Abbie and Little Imogen. Well done to all the girls for their teamwork and for representing Bromyard RFC (Ayden, Harriet, Victoria, Big Imogen, Little Imogen, Abbie, Ashlea and player of the day Sasha). Thank you to all the parents for your continued support and travelling such a distance and a special thanks to Bobby for the commitment shown to the girls team and to both Tom and Bobby for travelling to the festival, giving the team great encouragement. We have a few more festivals to attend and hopefully the new kit will be ready for our next outing. Under 7’s Under 8’s Under 9’s Our next game is against Hereford, who are a tough team and will be quite physical so we need our hardest tacklers on their game so three Weetabix for breakfast for all and four for George, Angus, Ellis, Josh and Duncan. Parents please repeat the usual mantra to your kids which is: Step in and don't get pushed out, go to ground if you are tackled and can't easily pass, support the ball carrier at all times, ring of steel, spatial awareness, up as a team and stay in channel The three players of the week for January (it wasn't awarded for the first week as we didn't train) are George, Tartan Terror & Josh. The very best of luck for tomorrow and remember it's just a game, the players are all kids, it isn't the 6 Nations and the coaches and referees are all volunteers! When the kids are on form they are easily the match for any other under 9 team in the county so please rev them up to make a good start as otherwise their heads always drop a little and Hereford will capitalise on this and before we know where we are we will be several tries down. Under 10’s We have been training hard all January and recruited two new members, so we welcome Harvey Payne & Ethan Loly to the group. They have fitted in well with the team and are already proving themselves on the pitch. This Sunday, unfortunately our pitches were unplayable & Ledbury kindly invited us to join them at Hartpury College to have a couple of games. It was a great opportunity for the boys to play on a very impressive 3G surface. With a cold north wind but no mud on our boys they played well. Under 11’s The U11s had a great start to 2015 playing away at Upton upon Severn. Up against a large Upton squad Bromyard had a fantatastic opening game 0-4, with Ptolomy swiftly running in all the tries created from Euan's great work and selfless passing. Upton came back in the second game with fresh legs winning 4-0. The final game was a very closely fought match with Zak scoring his first try for Bromyard, final score 2-1. Players of the Day, James Fred Perry and Zak. Under 12’s Played: 8 The second half of the season begins. Won: 2 Lost: 6 Points for: 228 Points against: 256 Picking up from where I left you, I hope all the children got what their hearts desired for Christmas and that not all your New Years’ Resolutions have floated away on a lake of wine or disappeared under a mountain of chocolate. The three way tie at Kings Norton with Bournville on January 4th was a non starter. Fog and frozen pitches don’t make for the best game of Rugby. The frantic game of ringing round all the players is not one that the Author wishes to repeat on a regular basis. The recent wet weather nearly caused the Ledbury game on Feb 1st to suffer the same fate.. With standing water on the pitches at Bromyard, the first scheduled game of 2015 was in jeopardy, more frantic telephone activity resulted in Ledbury kindly agreeing to host us. As this is not the correct forum through which to vent incredulity at the sheer incompetence and blatant bias of the referee, I shall at this point keep my thoughts to myself! The boys are each to be congratulated for the way they conducted themselves on the pitch, they played to the referees whistle and, in the face of adversity, kept their heads up until his final blast! Freddie Edmonds was without question thoroughly deserving of the Player of Week Trophy. Worthy also of a mention in dispatches for their efforts to take on the opposition are Conor Burton, Alex Perrin and Ben Gifford (2 tries & 2 disallowed (foot in touch and a charged down kick fumbled)). Ollie Portman and Will Morris were solid in defence and Jackson Ridgway surprised everyone with ball in hand on the right wing. Making their debut appearances against Ledbury, Charlie Riddell and Casper Mulcahy are to be welcomed to the U12 ‘Family’. We would also like to welcome Richard Cox to the coaching team. As this goes to print we look forward to a three way fixture with Ross and Hereford scheduled to be played in Hereford on Sunday Feb 8th to which we hope to take our full 22 man squad. Under 13/14’s U13 this month have done well, we have had two training games against Ross and Malvern which were a success, allowing us to help improve the lads under a game situation which has helped us bring on our new players. We then had our first game of the year against Ledbury away, we only had 11 players for this game so a big thank you to Ledbury for lending us four players, this was a hard game back and forth all the time, at a good standard of rugby. But we narrowly lost a hard fought game by two tries. All the lads have played well and gelled together as a team I would just like to make a quick mention to all the new lads this year thank you, as they all got straight into it and have been a big help scoring tries and putting in some last ditch tackles, one player has done really well scoring ten tries in three games so well done to Ryan Harris.
