8 & FEBRUARY 13, 2015 TheParish 1 EWA Immaculate Conception Parish Once again, our parish participation in the March For Life rally at the State Capital was a great success. We secured a bus to spare parishioners the drive to town, with its limited parking, and to make it easier for folks who did not have transportation. Thanks to Winnie Martinez for coordinating the manifest of adult bus riders. Also, a big mahalo to parish pro-life coordinator Susan Duffy and photographer Tom Carrington for their tireless efforts to ensure the success of our annual participation in the pro-life rally! Lastly, having our youth as major participants in the 2015 event was a blessing! They truly represented “Generation Life.” We must continue to participate in this annual event because the unborn need us, more than ever, to be “foot soldiers” in eradicating abortion from the world! The candles used were blessed the day before, Candlemas Day and the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. The parishioners brought candles, for personal and family use, to be blessed at the beginning of the Mass. The blessed candles were then carried to the altar in procession with the lit candles. “Let us go in peace to meet the Lord,” said during the procession, was a rich and wonderful synopsis of the feast day. Pope Francis also declared the day as World Day for Consecrated Life reminding us that 2015 is the Year of Consecrated Life. (Reported by Fran Kovaloff) 4 While the adults anticipated an afternoon of football frenzy, the catechism children were excited about their own “Souper Bowl Sunday,” Feb. 2. The children blew noisemakers, waved pom poms, signs and cheered for donations for this endeavor, a joint effort of the outreach ministry and the religious education program. Confirmation students will use the proceeds to provide lunch for the needy at the Good Shepherd Church in Wailuku. Under the direction of Juanita Kauhaahaa and son Lawrence, the Confirmation students will prepare and serve a Sunday lunch during Lent. We hope this experience will instill in our children to love one another and to recognize Jesus in disguise. Deacon Keith Cabiles was one of the six deacons ordained Jan. 31 at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa and one of the 13 members of the diocese’s seventh permanent deaconate class. At 36, he is the youngest of the group. He and his wife Hazell Cabiles have two daughters, Kacie and Hailey. Deacon Keith began his amazing journey in 2008 when Deacon George Thorp Jr., still assigned to this parish, announced a new deacon formation class. He is so proud to have grown up in Kalihi, so proud to call St. Anthony his parish and so proud now to be able to be of service to all. It will be his honor and a blessing to continue this amazing journey toward God, side by side with all the parishioners. In the next few days, Father Manny Dela Cruz and Deacon Keith will figure out what exactly his role will be, what ministries to help, which committees to advise or what programs to create. They will write a “covenant” listing all these tasks and giving him authority to accomplish them. Last Sunday, Feb. 1, Deacon Keith gave his first homily at the 6:30 a.m. Mass, pictured, and also preached the homily for the remaining two Masses of the day. He said, “I found it very interesting that today’s Gospel and my first homily would be all about authority.” God bless you, Deacon Keith!
