The JUSD Holiday Food Drive took
place over two days and there were at least
300 community member volunteers on Friday,
December 12 in preparation for the main
event on Saturday. In room 110 a small
group of volunteers stuffed stockings for boys
and girls while the volunteers in the gym sorted through all the donations. They filled bags
with a variety of foods that were donated. As
a special surprise for the hard working volunteers the Jurupa Volunteer Fire Fighter parade drove down Agate Street at about 7
PM. It was a spectacle of shining lights followed by a Disney Frozen Spectacular for all
to see. After the parade, we went back to
work in 110 or the gym. Twenty minutes later
we all met up in the gym to finish the job.
arriving volunteers helped organize the gym so
it looked nice. Minutes before the gates
opened, volunteers stationed themselves either
in the gym, food room, stocking room or with
the carts. Volunteers pushed each family’s cart
to every station. This process continued throughout the day. In all we served nearly 200 families. We gave away about 400 stockings, 350
bags of food, 300 toys, thousands of pieces of
clothing, and 25 bikes.

waiting to receive their donations. The first

The children’s reactions after they
received their stockings were priceless. They
had joy and happiness painted across their
faces. After all was said and done the volunteers were happy to know they helped the
members of our community.

JMS Book Club

Our school has had a book club for two years. Our librarian Mrs. Viehmann runs the JMS book club. Last
year there were 10 members, but this year it’s more than doubled to an astounding twenty-two participants.
The book club reads about six books each year. In the next few months they will be reading Bridge to Terabithia
by Katherine Paterson and Three Times Lucky by Shelia Turnage. They recently finished reading the book The Christmas Genie by Dan Gutman. The Christmas Genie is a book about a Genie who agrees to grant a class a wish but, the
class must decide which wish they want. So they each write their own wish on a slip of paper and the teacher draws
the wishes. Then they must decide as a class what wish they will choose. Mrs. Viehmann thought it was a great exercise and decided to try it with the book club. A few of their wishes were: “I wish to be happy all the time”, “I wish
there would be no racism”, and “I wish there would be no poor, starving people”.
Bridge to Terabithia is a novel written by Katherine Paterson, published in 1977, this book is about Jesse Aarons
and Leslie Burke. Jessie and Leslie became friends soon after meeting. During their friendship they create a fantasy
land called Terabithia. Terabithia was located in a forest that was near their houses. Once in the land of Terabithia
the two children were the prestigious king and queen of the land.
Three Times Lucky is a children’s novel written by Sheila Turner, published in 2013, this book is about Moses LoBeau
who washed up on a shore in Tupelo Landing. She has been trying to send messages to her mother, curious as to why
she let her go. A café customer, Mr. Jessie is found murdered. Moses and Dale attempt to solve the murder case.
The book club meets almost every month; their next meeting will be January 28, 2015 to discuss The Voyage of the
Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis. They will meet again on March 4, 2015 to discuss Notes from the Dog by Gary Paulsen.
The book club welcomes all JMS students so feel free to talk to Mrs. Viehmann about joining.

JMS Movie Fest!
On December 21, 2014 we had our 2nd ‘Good Guys’ Event. It was a movie fest, and the movies
were; Rio 2, Space Jam, Grease, The Goonies, Turbo, The Sandlot, Nacho Libre, High School Musical and more.
The teachers gave out free popcorn and you could also bring snacks of your own.
I went to go see Maleficent and it was very fun. I got to hang out with some friends that I hardly see
and I also got to watch a very entertaining movie.
To be able to watch the movie of your choice you had to sign up for it in the gym during lunch, well you
could only sign up if you were eligible and your teacher had that list. In order to be eligible you had to have
no F’s and no OCD’s.
If you would like to go the next Good Guys and you have no OCD’s, then you should get your grades up,
so you are able to go.
Trust me it’s worth it!!
Behind the scenes with band

Hello JMS students and staff, if you haven’t noticed, there are a lot of students on this campus that have a
musical talent. More than half of those musically talented students are in the JMS Band. I hope you find out something
new about our band and band instructor after reading this article.
I interviewed Mr. Hakomaki, our band instructor on why he teaches band, upcoming events, drum line, etc. Mr.
Hakomaki said, “I teach band because I love music and I think music is the most important thing in life.” When I asked
him about his favorite instrument, he said, “I don’t have a favorite instrument, but I have a favorite sound. I like the
low clarinet sound and the sound of baritones and tubas.”
With upcoming events, the band will be performing at California Adventure in February. The drum line will
be having a lot of competitions this semester and will strive to get first place in the junior championships. Mr. Hakomaki is very proud of the drum line because the school was able to maintain it for many years and he loves how more
kids want to join drum line each year. Mr. Hakomaki also wants to tell students not in band to join band. He knows
that everyone has played an instrument before, and you should be able to learn how to play it correctly.
I asked a few students why they like band. Dalia Popok said, “I like band because its fun, and I think it’s funny when I show my friends my music and they think it’s another language.” Mackenzie Maxwell said, “I like band because its fun, it’s also addictive.” Kelly Gadsden said, “It challenges you to remember your music and play the right
notes and partials along with playing the correct melody. I like the challenge.” Angelina Grisham said, “I like band
because its fun, and Mr. Hakomaki is fun too.”
After reading this article, I hope that you can see that the JMS Band does many things and is a whole lot of fun. To all
the students on campus, it is not too late to join band. Even if you’re going to high school next year you can always
learn how to play an instrument you’ve always wanted to play. So don’t be shy, take a chance, play an instrument,
and join band.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN 7th grade ela?
The 7th Grade ELA students read the story, “The Lady or
the Tiger,” by Frank R. Stockton.
Their Engaging Scenario was that
they were members of the princess’
advisory team, and, knowing the
princess as well as they do, they
were to advise her on whether or
not she should signal to her beloved
boyfriend to choose the door behind which is hidden either a tiger
or a lady.
You see, her father, the
king, had found out that she was
dating the young man without his
knowledge. He was quite angry.
Plus, he had a wicked and yet clever way to settle disputes in his kingdom. He would send the accused
into an arena, and the accused
would choose either a door behind
which was a hidden tiger – who
would instantly and ferociously
devour the accused in front of a
roaring crowd – or a door behind
which was a beautiful young lady,
perfectly matched to the personali-
ty of the accused – who would, at
that very moment, marry the accused in front of a cheering
crowd.
The cleverness of this
plan is that the accused chose his
own fate, leaving the king guiltfree.
The princess, as powerful and clever as her father,
found out which door in the arena
hid the tiger and the lady. But
she knew that, although watching
her boyfriend get eaten by the
tiger would be horrible, watching
him marry another lady with
whom he would be forever happy was equally horrible. She
agonized over the decision for
days and nights.
The 7th grade, knowing
the princess’ good and bad traits,
is advising her to choose the tiger.

On Thursday Januarys 28, 2015 JMS had their annual two mile
Trophy Dash. It was a beautiful day! Girls started the race off, running
as fast as they could trying to get number one. After the girls race the
boys lined up. Mr. Goltry gave them the signal, and they were off! After
the race trophies were handed out. It was a success!

JOHNS INCREDIBLE PIZZA

Our third annual Good Guy’s event was a blast for both seventh and eight graders. All the JMS students that went to John’s Incredible Pizza had an incredible time! Students were so excited to hang out with their friends, play some games, and eat pizza. We
loved the attractions, like the twister, bumper cars, roller-coaster, and much more. We saw
kids going on the horse carrousel too. It was so funny! No one wanted to leave when it
was over, but when we arrived back at the JMS Campus we were ALL SMILES! Thanks JMS
staff for putting together such a great event.

ESSAY CONTEST
Veterans of Foreign Wars
Evelyn Peraza Pantoja
The VFW contest is an essay contest with more than 100,000 students in grades 6-8 competing to win first
place and compete for 46 national awards for a total of $46,000. The first place winner wins $5,000 and a
trip to Washington, D.C., in March of 2015.
The contest wants kids to compare America’s history and patriotism with their experiences in their own life. The
essay has to be 300-400 words expressing a patriotic theme which changes each year.
Mrs. Biddle’s class always participates in this essay contest. Ms. Gutierrez’s classes also participated this year.
Four students from JMS won awards this year. The participants who won awards are, Tristin Oliver, Claudia
Alfaro, Rachelle Esparza, and Christian Dominguez.
If you will like to compete next year in the VFW contest speak to your teacher about joining or go see Mrs.
Biddle. Congratulations winners!

Hey JMS students, did you guys know we
have a new teacher on our campus! Her name is Mrs.
Krause. Did you know Mrs. Krause use to teach ELA
at JMS years ago? Well she did and we are delighted she has returned. Mrs. Krause teaches ELA 8,
and attended Cal State Fullerton. Prior to coming
back to JMS she taught at Buena Park High School
and Rubidoux High School. She expects her students
to be respectful and hard working. She is not a
product of our district, she’s a transplant! Besides
teaching she does not have hobbies because she has
two kids to take care of and that takes up all her
time. Welcome back Mrs. Krause, we are glad to have you
here.

1. Solid color button up t-shirt that goes down to your knees
2. Scissors
3. A solid color belt that matches your t-shirt
Instructions:
Get your button up t-shirt and cut the sleeves to about 2 inches for the shoulder. Then, cut the collar neckline to whatever size you want it to be. When
your finished cutting your shirt to the perfect size for you, put it on and put
your belt on to get the dress style. Have fun making your dress!

First paint green, yellow, and red stripes on your nail in any order you prefer. Next
while your nails are drying cut the tape in any shape you want. Then, once your nails
are dry place the tape on your nail leaving pieces hanging over your finger to later
peel off. Then paint your nail with black nail polish and instantly peel off the tape
and then you are done and ready to show off your new nails design. Have fun!

OPINION

JMS is a school of learners. As eighth graders we have
learned not just academically,
but in life too and JMS is one
step closer to high school and
that is exactly where we are
going next year. Middle school
has changed our lives and we
have become better, smarter,
more responsible people. Our
teachers and staff members
have encouraged us to succeed
in all we do and helped us believe that we can do anything.
Carlos Diaz is an
eighth grader
here at JMS. We
interviewed him to
get his perspective
on these last two
years. When Carlos first started
middle school he was scared
because people made it sound
worse than it is and so far to
him this has been the best experience. When he started school
at JMS he kept his old friends
but learned to love and make
new friends too. He was in video production and art and says
these two classes were great.
His favorite teacher would have
to be Mr. Roughton because he
was fun. Carlos’s favorite
Good Guys event was the
winter dance because he got
to hangout with his friends
socially. Overall Carlos
states his favorite things
about JMS is the staff and
the people who surround him
everyday. He misses the rotating schedule and thinks it
was better than the current
fixed schedule. Separating
the girl’s lunch line from the
boy’s lunch line is not the
school’s best decision. Carlos
believes that JMS has made
him a better person because
he was shy before the morning news broadcasted him
and helped him to open up.
Overall Carlos thinks JMS is
a great school and has prepared him to go to high
school.
Maribel Gomez
is also an eighth
grader here at
JMS. When
Maribel came
she was not
scared because
she had previous experience
from STEM Academy. She
has been here for two years
and both years her elective has
been AVID. Maribel states that
her favorite teacher is Mrs.
Matulich. Her favorite thing
here at JMS is when she gets to
meet new and amazing people.
She says the school has
changed her in a positive way
by making her feel understood,
safe, and comfortable. She
likes to have fun and the most
fun Good Guys event for her
was Castle Park. She says the
thing she will miss the most
about this school are her 7th
grade friends. She says she has
always been ready to go to
high school and can’t wait to
go.
For Seventh graders we
hope you have the same fun
experiences as we did. For
Eighth graders, have a great
time in high school and don’t be
scared, it most likely will be the
best time of your life.

Should Women Be Allowed to Fight on the
Front Lines Along side Men?
On January 24, 2013, Secretary of Defense, Leon E. Panetta ended the military’s
ban on women in combat. He declared that by 2016 women will have the right to fight on
the frontlines alongside men. Do you agree with Mr. Panetta’s decision? Should women be
allowed to fight on the front lines alongside men?
When I first heard this, I thought, Heck yeah! Girl power!!! But if you really think
about it, 2016 is next year! So next year, women ages 18-25 will have to sign up for the
Selective Service System, or more commonly known as the draft. Although there’s a very
low chance the draft will be used, it’s still scary to think if it was used, you could be picked. I
think it’s great how women want to serve our country, but while the women who volunteer
may fit the requirements, draftees won’t. Most argue sometimes male draftees don’t fit the
requirements either, but there are still a lot more problems with women being in the military. One problem is the fact that women are just more emotional than men. On the battlefield, when they literally watch people die, it may overwhelm them and can cause severe
posttraumatic stress. Another problem is pregnancy, it does happen. And it’s sad to think
after all that training, women could be sent back home because they’re pregnant. And then
there’s just the overall problem: women are built differently than men. It’s a fact.
I love how women are fighting for equal rights, but some things shouldn’t be
changed. Don’t fix what isn’t broken. The U.S. military is for the safety and protection of our
country. This should be the top priority, not equality. So, ladies, go find something else to
equalize.

Hello JMS students, did you know that there is an artist on campus? Her
name is Aurora Leon. We asked Aurora when she started drawing and she said, “I
started drawing when I was 9 years old” Aurora spends about 11 hours a week
drawing, WOW! We also asked Aurora what her biggest dream in life is and she
told us, “My biggest dream is to provide people with inspiration and happiness”
What an amazing artist she is. Aurora also told us that if you want to start drawing
yourself, you should, “Start by looking at the things around you and try to understand what you are looking at” Aurora commented that she is planning to be a
great and famous artist when she is older. After the interview, she showed us a few of her wonderful
drawings. We are proud to present a few drawings here in The Paw Print.

Did you know we have a really great musician on the
JMS campus? We went to Mr. Hakomaki’s class and interviewed
Karina Ramirez. He said she is always smiling and has a great
sense of humor. He also said she is a very hard worker; she has a
good attitude, and a positive influence on other students. Karina is
13 years old and started playing music when she was in 5th
grade at Terrace View Elementary. Don’t you think she learned
quickly? She loves playing the trumpet, but she would like to try
the trombone someday. Her favorite elective is band. She said
band is pretty hard, and takes a lot of work. Her biggest dream
is to become a band director for a middle school. Isn’t that an
amazing dream? We wish you luck!

The Art of Figure Skating

Janelle Alvero Beltran….
may just be the next name you’ll
see in the future winter Olympics!
You’ll watch as Janelle will gracefully figure skate on the frigid ice.
Her passion began when her big
brother took her skating at the
young age of eight, and she was
astonished by her love for the ice.
Three years later, Janelle began
professionally skating, and is still
continuing today. After only two
years, Janelle has achieved Best
Performance, Most Creative, Best
Music Choice, and Best Choreography. She practices three days a
week, five hours a day, that’s an
insane fifteen hours a week! Her
inspiration took root from the fa-
mous, Yulia Lipinski, Sasha Cohen,
and her Olympic gold medalist
coaches, Stephanie Adrian and
Sean Rabbitt. “I love that I get to
express my feelings on the ice,”
said Janelle. Remember this
phrase when you marvel at her
breath-taking dance on ice in the
future winter Olympics.

Hey JMS! Did you know that we have a future star on campus? Her name is
Sacha Parker! She started acting at 11 years old, and has been on TV shows like
The Middle, Jessie, How I Met Your Mother, and The Goldbergs. Out of all those
shows, she said that The Goldbergs was her favorite to act on. She wanted to start
acting because she always wondered how actors memorized lines. She said that
acting is a lot of hard work because you have to get a work permit and you have to
list your skills and constantly update them every 6

months. When she grows up she wants to become an
actress, and wants to attend UCLA. She says that
her family is her biggest supporters. Along with her
acting career she enjoys surfing, singing, playing
guitar, and hanging out with friends. She also said
her favorite subject is ELA with Mrs. Shaffer! She said

JURUPA MIDDLE HAS TALENT!

Alejandra RUIZ HERNANDEZ
Alejandra Ruiz Hernandez was recommended to us by Ms. Alonzo. Ms.
Alonzo told us that Alejandra is probably the fastest seventh grade girl and possibly
the fastest girl overall at JMS. We went to interview Alejandra and found out she
was in Florida for a National Taekwondo Tournament, what a surprise! We caught
up with Alejandra when she came back. She told us her fastest 2 mile run is 16
minutes and her fastest mile run is 6 minutes. Alejandra loves to run, and she told us
that, “When she runs she feels free.” Her favorite class is P.E. and her teacher is Mr.
Goltry.
Alejandra has been in Taekwondo for 4 years. She just competed at a National Taekwondo Tournament for a week in Florida and won third place. She has been training 6 or 7 days a
week for 4 years and has earned her black belt. Alejandra said, “The best part about being at the tournament
was visiting places like Disneyworld.” Some of her other hobbies are running and Cross Country. Alejandra isn’t
just athletic, but she is also very smart. She has all honor classes and accelerated math. Alejandra has straight A’s

Today we interviewed Chase Nelson and Chase has a very cool talent. His talent is hunting ducks and doves. We asked
Chase a couple of questions and these were his answers to the questions we asked him.
“I learned how to hunt when my dad taught me how. Now I go hunting with my dad and brother.”
“I hunt in Utah and California. Before we start hunting I have to wear my camouflage pants, so it protects me and I won’t
be seen by any of the animals.”
“I do eat the animals when I kill them. When I kill the animals I do it as a hobby and so we
can have food to eat.”
“It was not easy learning how to hunt because there were many things that I had to learn. For
example, I had to learn how to hide and how to shoot the animals.”
“When people tell me that they don’t agree that us humans kill animals I disagree with them
because I think animals were put in this world to be killed and eaten.”
“For people that would like to start hunting here is some advice, stay out of sights so none of
the animals see you”

Have you ever wondered
who is ranked 1st academically in
our 8th grade class? Well, it’s
Christian Aguilar and he is certainly an amazing eighth grade student! He takes all honors classes
including band, drum line and
yearbook for a total of 8 classes a
day! That’s just unheard of!
Christian is president of
the College Bound after school
club that Mrs. Biddle teaches and
according to Christian, he taught
the students in the College Bound
club coding (computer programing)
from a special website just this
month.
Christian keeps a packed
schedule along with regular camping trips that include: scouting,
backpacking long distances, and
canoeing.
When we asked him how
he copes with his packed schedule,
he told us he had a “group of
friends” he normally does homework with, who support him. His
goal in life is to “be able to do
something meaningful, something
different from others.”
Lets see what Christian’s
teachers say about him !
“It is rare to meet a student at such a young age and know you are looking a person who will be a
success in all he does. It is not just Christian’s intelligence that makes him stand out above other students
his age, but also his respectful and kind disposition and his ability to roll with the punches. Christian’s

the challenge.”
