LENTEN SEASON IS HERE AGAIN This year Ash Wednesday, falls on February 18, 2015 which marks the beginning of our Lenten season. Ash Wednesday is a day of obligatory fast and abstinence. All Fridays are days of abstinence. The days of fast ( only full meal) and abstinence ( no meat) are on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence meaning no meat. As we know, those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast ( only one full meal). Then from the age of 14, people are also obliged to abstain from meat, this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind even though made from animal fat. Lent is a time for us to acknowledge that we are sinners and that we are saved through God's abundant love. During Lent, Holy Mother Church invites us to deepen our commitment to Christ and His community of Church. We deepen our commitment to Christ through disciplines of Scripture reading, meditation, prayer, fasting, almsgiving and service to the poor and the needy in our community. We also celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. You may have the Sacrament of Reconciliation in our parish or go to any parish of your choice Also, as part of our usual Lenten practices, we shall have Stations of the Cross where we pray and reflect on Christ's passion and death on Fridays. This year, on all the Fridays during Lent, we shall celebrate Holy Mass at 6:30pm which will be followed by the Stations of the Cross. Besides what the parish will be doing, what are you planning to do as an individual and as a family during this season of Lent? Please contact the Parish Office if you need any assistance to have a fruitful season of Lent. It is my fervent prayer that this season of Lent be a time of grace and blessing for us all. Utley Project Light Memorial Campaign 2015 Linda Utley could not do enough for her parish. She would make baskets for all the church’s children to take home on Easter Sunday. And, she’d raise money to help parish kids with college costs. But her signature effort had always been Project Light. As part of the Lenten fast and penance, she encouraged members to donate one dollar each day to help fund a parish need. Linda passed away some 15 years ago, but in her honor we have kept alive this much needed project that she started 29 years ago. All money raised is used for various parish needs. Please consider contributing $50, by the end of the Lenten Season. We ask each child to contribute $5.00. More information re Project Light will be coming soon. Take note that this year in your collection envelopes you have an envelope designated for “Project Light.” For further information, call L. The Religious Teachers Filippini The end of the 17th century marked the beginning of the Religious Teachers Filippini . St. Lucy Filippini and Cardinal Barbarigo founded schools of Christian Doctrine for girls in Italy. St. Lucy also ministered to the poor and the sick, conducted retreats and guided the women preparing for marriage. A contemplative in action, she blended her life of prayer with her life of ministry. St. Lucy expressed the desire to be a thousand Lucys that she might bring her consuming love of God to the peoples of the world. In 1910 St. Pius X commissioned five Religious Teachers Filippini to come to the United States where the spiritual needs of the Italian immigrants begged relief. Like all pioneers the Sisters suffered hardships and difficulties until in 1918 Archbishop Thomas J Walsh came to their assistance. The succeeding decades saw the opening of many schools in the Eastern and Central part of the United States. Lucy's horizons widened with the opening of many missions in Brazil, Ethiopia, England, India, Eritrea and Albania. Villa Walsh, located in Morristown, New Jersey, is the motherhouse for the province of St. Lucy Filippini. The Importance of a Last Will and Testament Remember the Church in your Last Will & Testament. Her prayers will accompany you to heaven. Through your Last Will and Testament you can also help those deprived and less fortunate, to learn of God's infinite love and compassion by leaving a legacy through the Church. After considering your family and friends in your Will, why not think of leaving a gift to the family of the Church? It is a way of thanking God for the blessings you have received during your life and a wonderful way of ensuring that the faith and values we cherish will be carried on in the future. Discuss this option with your financial advisor or those who assist 583 Page 4 you in these matters.
