Growing in God
Sixth Sunday in
Ordinary Time
Meditation: Is there something
keeping you from approaching
Jesus with expectant faith and confidence –
perhaps fear, pride, doubt, or the risk of losing
your reputation or your friends? No one who
sought Jesus was refused His help. Even the
untouchables and the outcasts of society found
help in Jesus. Unlike the people of Jesus' time
who fled at the sight of a leper, Jesus touched
the leper who came to Him and asked to be
made clean. This was remarkable because
lepers were treated as outcasts of society, who
were considered “already dead”. Jewish law
forbade anyone from touching or approaching a
leper, lest ritual defilement occur.
The leper who came to Jesus approached Him
confidently and humbly, expecting that Jesus
could and would heal him and make him whole
again. Jesus not only grants the man his
request, but He demonstrates the personal love,
compassion, and tenderness of God in His
physical touch. (The knowledge of His day
would have regarded such contact as grave risk
for incurring infection.) By touching him, Jesus
communicated the love and mercy of God in a
sign that spoke more eloquently than words. He
touched the man and made him clean – not only
physically but spiritually as well.
Reflection: Jesus is ready to heal us and free
us from fear, prejudice, and anything else that
might hold us back from approaching others
with selfless love and concern for their welfare.
How do you treat your neighbor, especially
those who have been rejected, mistreated, and
left alone? Do you approach them with the same
love and compassion which Christ has shown to
you?
Prayer: Loving God, Your Son Jesus does not
think of some human beings as being
acceptable and others as being unacceptable.
Jesus shows Your love to everyone. May the
grace of Your Holy Spirit help us always to
reach out to others with kindness and
compassion. Amen.

Dear Parishioners,
Lent provides us with an extraordinary
opportunity to follow Jesus. This does not mean
that we simply sign our foreheads with ashes,
give up desserts (mainly so that we can slim
down), and say a few additional prayers. To
really be a disciple of Jesus means that we
adopt His ways: we turn from sin and do God’s
will; we take up our crosses daily and follow
Him.
This is completely contrary to our culture which
emphasizes self-gratification at any cost. But
the truth is that nothing that we possess in the
material realm – not even modern technology –
can save us. Only Jesus can do that.
Lent then asks the fundamental question: do
you really want to follow Jesus with all your
heart, all your mind, and all your being? This is
a call that we spend a lifetime working toward,
but it is important to always be moving forward.
If we do take Lent seriously, the reward is that
we will truly live now and forever. Let’s make
the most of this Lent 2015, this time of special
grace.

Sin separates us from the love of God, but the
cultivation of virtue can restore right relationship
with Him. Join us as we begin the journey from
sin to sanctity with Fr. Robert Barron's spiritual
study of the 7 Deadly Sins/7 Lively Virtues.
The weekend of Feb. 14 & 15, Msgr. Dubell
invites each family to recapture the story of our
faith and the passion to live it by reading
Rediscover Catholicism by Matthew Kelly.
The books will be located on tables at the exits
of the church. We ask that families take only
one copy to share so there are enough for
everyone. Enjoy!

a powerful way to meditate on the
Passion of Christ.

Pride, envy, anger, sloth, gluttony, avarice and
lust are all patterns of dysfunction within us that
lead to unhappiness. Fr. Barron explains the
nature of these sins and offers a corresponding
virtue for each one, giving practical advice on
how to instill this virtue in your own life.
Fr. Barron is an acclaimed author and
theologian, a podcasting priest from Chicago,
and an innovative teacher of the Catholic faith.
The study will be Monday evenings from
7:00PM-9:00PM on the following evenings: Feb.
23, March 2, March 9, March 16 in the Emmaus

ext. 110. This is a beautiful way to do an
extended examination of conscience before the
Lenten penance services.
It would be helpful to bring a bible and the
Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Preparing for Lent
Fast and Abstinence
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are Days of
Fast and Abstinence. The other Fridays of Lent
are Days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only
one full meal is permitted. This obligation is for
those between the ages of 18 and 59. Those
with health concerns are exempt. On a day of
Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those
who have reached the age of 14 are obligated to
abstain from meat. The obligation to observe
the laws of fast and abstinence is a serious
obligation.

Our Y.E.S. Youth Ministry will present the
Stations of the Cross on March 6th at 7:30 pm.
All students in grades 6, 7 & 8 who are
interested in participating should email
[email protected]. Rehearsals will be held
on Tuesday Feb 24th, Wed Feb 25th, Tues Mar
3rd & Wed March 4th from 7:15-8:15 pm in the
Chapel at SML School. If you would like a
character part, you must be available for all
rehearsals.
Try Eucharistic Adoration for Lent!
A personal encounter with Jesus
Come and spend time with Jesus. We have
Eucharistic Adoration every Thursday from 9:30
AM to 7:00 PM.
You can read the bible, pray,
tell Jesus your cares and concerns or just sit and
keep Him company.
If you can’t come during
Adoration, come anytime to spend time with
Jesus.
Lenten Suggestions
Get to know Jesus better by reading a chapter
of the Gospels every day. If a word or phrase
moves you or challenges you, pray with it for a
while. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you discover
what God is saying to you. Go online and learn
about Lectio Divina - the art of praying with
Scripture.
Read the Works of Mercy as Jesus describes
them in Matthew 25:31-46.
Look for ways to
put them into practice this Lent.
Learn how to pray the rosary– resources can be
found online. The rosary is prayed daily after
the morning weekday Masses (see page 8 for a
list of afternoon and evening opportunities).
Stop by, even if you don’t know how to pray the
rosary, someone will help.
Add an extra Mass to your prayer life.
Our
complete daily Mass schedule is on page 8.
We offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation
Fridays following the 9am Mass and
Saturdays at 4pm. If those times are
convenient for you, you are welcome to call
office to arrange for a different time.

A Lenten Activity for Children
“The Jesus Tree”
This Lent, decorate a “Jesus Tree” and take
your family on a journey through the Gospels.
The Jesus Tree is a Lenten Bible study of the
life and teachings of Jesus from His
Presentation in the Temple to His death and
Resurrection. On a poster board draw the trunk
and branches of a tree. You can also do this
with felt. Don’t add leaves. Cut leaves out of
green paper (felt) and set them aside.
Each day during Lent, read a Bible story with
your family about an event or teaching during
Jesus' life. After each story glue a leaf on one
of the branches.

The Jesus Tree is a wonderful way to reflect on
the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus with
your family. Just as the barren branch blossoms
through Jesus' life, we also grow from the

The day runs from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm (doors
open at 8:00 am for bagels and coffee) and will
feature Holy Mass and inspiring talks by: Jose
Romero, Catholic author, radio host, and
evangelist; Mike Piazza, former Major League
Baseball All-Star catcher; and a blockbuster
speaker, who cannot be announced in advance,
but is someone you will not want to miss! There
will also be Catholic vendors, and the
opportunity to interact with other men who are
looking to grow in their Catholic faith. A youth
breakout session will also be offered for young
men from 8th grade to college age.
Cost is $25 per person in advance ($30 at the
door); $10 for students. Breakfast and lunch will

the Blessed Mother available to visit your home
for a week or two. She will be delivered directly
