2.3 Electives/Curriculum Corequisites
Most students select two electives or curriculum corequisites; please see special requirements below for
particular teaching majors. In order to spread the workload most students enrol in one unit per semester.
However, if you are interested in two units offered in one semester, you may enrol in both if timetabling allows.
Special requirements for particular teaching majors:
• TESOL majors must complete Educational Linguistics EDUC5404 (unless you have previous linguistics
studies).
3
•
•
•
Music majors must enrol in all four music curriculum units plus one minor curriculum unit or one elective.
Physical Education majors are required to complete Health Education SSEH5491 and Health Promotion
in Schools SSEH5492.
School Psychology majors must take EDUC5492 Understanding and Managing Disruptive Behaviour
Disorders and EDUC5454 Learning Difficulties.
Elective/Corequisite Units
EDUC5404
Educational Linguistics (Compulsory for TESOL Majors)
This unit offers an introduction to linguistics, with an emphasis on applications to
educational contexts. Students learn the fundamental principles of phonology,
grammar, semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics.
Sem 1
EDUC5494
Approaches to Student Assessment

education and the social sciences. Students explore principles of test construction,
administration, scoring analysis and practical perspectives.
Sem 1
SSEH5491

planning, presentation skills, group facilitation, pedagogical content knowledge and
the use of health-related teaching aids frame the content focus.

organisational and leadership theories in these settings.
Sem 2

Education in Rural Australia
This unit explores key conceptual issues underpinning the provision of education in
rural Australia. It questions place-based education in relation to the possibility of a
more diverse approach to educational provision as a response to geographic,

areas. Students considering a rural practicum should consider this elective.
Sem 2
EDUC5454
Learning Difficulties (Required for School Psychology Majors and recommended
for Special Education Minors)
This unit provides a general overview of learning difficulties (LD) from a number of
perspectives (e.g. medical, neuropsychological, educational) and a range of
teaching strategies for students with LD. It critically examines the specificity and
complexity of learning difficulties, including moderate, severe and profound learning
disabilities. Although the primary focus is on reading, mathematics, written
expression and learning disorders not otherwise specified, other psychopathologies
which impact learning are also covered.
Health Promotion in Schools (Compulsory for Physical Education Majors)
This unit studies societal health issue and the knowledge, values, skills and
behaviours that promote a healthy lifestyle concentrating on adolescent health
problems which affect WA secondary school students.
Literacy and Numeracy Across the Curriculum
This unit comprises emphasises how knowledge is constructed in different subjectspecific discourses and what kinds of literacy and numeracy support can be offered
in mainstream classrooms across the curriculum to enhance students' opportunities
for learning. Students will connect the theory and research related to literacy and
