Course Structure Information The Graduate Diploma in Education is comprised of core units, curriculum units, and electives/corequisites which are highly integrated. Ensure that you enter the correct semester period, as given in this booklet, when you enrol. 2.1 Core Units There are five compulsory core units plus AACE4000 for all new students at UWA. This unit will automatically be added to your enrolment. In order to spread the workload most students enrol in one unit per semester. However, if you are interested in two units offered in one semester, you may enrol in both if timetabling allows. Special requirements for particular teaching majors: • TESOL majors must complete Educational Linguistics EDUC5404 (unless you have previous linguistics studies). 3 • • • Music majors must enrol in all four music curriculum units plus one minor curriculum unit or one elective. Physical Education majors are required to complete Health Education SSEH5491 and Health Promotion in Schools SSEH5492. School Psychology majors must take EDUC5492 Understanding and Managing Disruptive Behaviour Disorders and EDUC5454 Learning Difficulties. Elective/Corequisite Units EDUC5404 Educational Linguistics (Compulsory for TESOL Majors) This unit offers an introduction to linguistics, with an emphasis on applications to educational contexts. Students learn the fundamental principles of phonology, grammar, semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics. Sem 1 EDUC5494 Approaches to Student Assessment This unit focuses on the principles of assessment and evaluation in the context of education and the social sciences. Students explore principles of test construction, administration, scoring analysis and practical perspectives. Sem 1 SSEH5491 Health Education (Compulsory for Physical Education Majors) This unit focuses on developing health education and promotion skills. Lesson planning, presentation skills, group facilitation, pedagogical content knowledge and the use of health-related teaching aids frame the content focus. Sem 1 EDUC5411 Enhancing Teaching Through Understanding Contemporary Education This unit examines how education systems have been shaped in a variety of countries. Special emphasis is placed on the distinctive cultural settings in which schools function and a range of contemporary issues. Understanding and Managing Disruptive Behaviour Disorders This unit focuses on students with serious behaviour disorders and the effect of reputation enhancement among ‘at risk’ students. Sem 1 EDUC5415 Educational Leadership and Management This unit draws on perspectives from educational leadership and management as well as the sociology of Education. The emphasis of the unit is on providing a theoretical and professional basis for understanding educational leadership by exploring schools as complex organisations and examining the application of organisational and leadership theories in these settings. Sem 2 EDUC5416 Education in Rural Australia This unit explores key conceptual issues underpinning the provision of education in rural Australia. It questions place-based education in relation to the possibility of a more diverse approach to educational provision as a response to geographic, demographic and economic factors impacting upon teaching in non-metropolitan areas. Students considering a rural practicum should consider this elective. Sem 2 EDUC5454 Learning Difficulties (Required for School Psychology Majors and recommended for Special Education Minors) This unit provides a general overview of learning difficulties (LD) from a number of perspectives (e.g. medical, neuropsychological, educational) and a range of teaching strategies for students with LD. It critically examines the specificity and complexity of learning difficulties, including moderate, severe and profound learning disabilities. Although the primary focus is on reading, mathematics, written expression and learning disorders not otherwise specified, other psychopathologies which impact learning are also covered. Health Promotion in Schools (Compulsory for Physical Education Majors) This unit studies societal health issue and the knowledge, values, skills and behaviours that promote a healthy lifestyle concentrating on adolescent health problems which affect WA secondary school students. Literacy and Numeracy Across the Curriculum This unit comprises emphasises how knowledge is constructed in different subjectspecific discourses and what kinds of literacy and numeracy support can be offered in mainstream classrooms across the curriculum to enhance students' opportunities for learning. Students will connect the theory and research related to literacy and numeracy to classroom-based applications to help students develop sets of strategies that can be applied to support students' learning. A subject list will then appear further down the page from which you can select your units. 2.7 Language Competency The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) require pre-service teachers to demonstrate literacy and numeracy skills within the top 30% of the Australian population. Pre-service teachers will sit a literacy assessment on orientation day and they will include assessment of spelling, grammar and the ability to write a short essay using appropriate text structure and vocabulary. To assist you in preparing for this, we recommend that you purchase the following book: Faigley, L. (2012). The Little Penguin Handbook, Pearson, Australia. (Available from the UWA bookshop).If you do not pass the literacy tests, you will be given an opportunity to sit parallel assessments at a later time (dates to be advised). 2.8 Timetable Once you are enrolled please go to website www.unistart.uwa.edu.au/crawley/prepare/timetables for assistance. Please read the following explanatory notes before querying the timetable. • Two Science Curriculum I classes are offered due to the large enrolment in this class and the safety requirements in the Science lab. Science Major are expected to attend the Monday class unless there is a timetable clash. Science Minor are expected to attend the Thursday class unless there is a timetable clash. • Multiple ICT classes are scheduled on the timetable to cater for large numbers. Only the Tuesday class will run unless additional classes are required. If you have checked the timetable and have a clash, please contact Anna Johansson by either email: [email protected] or telephone: 6488 2397. 2.9 Academic Calendar Please check the GSE academic calendar when planning holidays and special events (see page 2 of this booklet). Please note that GSE does not follow the UWA academic calendar. 5 3. PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE PLACEMENT In Semester 1 Professional Practice takes the form of five distributed days, followed by a five week block. Semester 2 provides the largest professional practice placement with a six week block. In addition, over the duration of the course students will engage with a wide range of secondary education settings. 3.1 Professional Practice Placement Form To organise the teaching practice placements as soon as possible please complete the Professional Practice Placement form available at: www.education.uwa.edu.au/students/professional-practice/checklist and return it to the GSE immediately. When completing this form please select the major and minor stated in your offer letter. For some teaching areas, you may need to indicate a subject specialisation. This information is used to assist the Professional Practice Office in finding the most suitable practice placement for you. Please contact the Professional Practice Office as soon as possible if there are any changes to your personal details to avoid any impact on your practicum placement. If you have any questions about the form please contact the Professional Practice Office on 6488 3640 or [email protected]. 3.2 Clearances required for Professional Practice Placements Pre-service teachers ARE NOT permitted to participate in professional practice without BOTH of the clearances listed below. Please obtain these clearances by February, 2015. This information can also be found online at: www.education.uwa.edu.au/students/professional-practice/checklist 1. A National Police History Check (NPHC) through the Department of Education (DoE). Download the package from the DoE website – www.det.wa.edu.au/screening. Please fill in the forms and send it to the Screening Unit; this clearance costs $46.00 as of January 2014 and increases may apply. They will process your application and send you notification of the outcome of the check. A Working with Children Check (WWCC). To apply for a Working with Children check obtain an application form from any post office, or see www.checkwwc.wa.gov.au for further information. Please bring in your form to GSE reception so this can be done prior to presenting it to the post office for processing. Once you have obtained your clearances, please present them to Reception GSE in order to place copy of both clearances on file. If you have not presented your clearances before your scheduled professional practice period your placement will be cancelled. 6 3.3 Badges During your professional practice placement you will be required to wear an ID badge at all times. Badges, at a cost of $9, will be ordered with the name provided on the Professional Practice Placement form enclosed. Payment will be expected when you collect your badge prior to the commencement of the first professional practice period. 4. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE 4.1 HELP Loans Schemes (Australian students) The Australian Government offer various loan schemes to assist students in Commonwealth supported places for the ‘student contribution’ of tuition fees. These are available to Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa holders.
