Regional News
Hello Archers!
I just wanted to update you all about the Regional President’s Meeting and some of the things that were
modified for the 2015 year. The most significant change is that the Shooter of the Year award and the 3D
Team Competition award have been retired. That being said, we have come up with a new system that
allows equal participation among all archers. In the past the shooter of the year was often biased towards
freestyle shooters or bow hunter freestyle shooters, but not anymore! Below is a brief list of the new rules.
If you have any questions about this new process please send me a message.


All Regional members within Adult, Senior, Master Senior, and Silver Senior classes in MTBA clubs compete
for Club of the Year award.
If members belong to multiple clubs within the Region, members must declare at their first Regional
Tournament which club they will represent and commit to shooting for that club for the balance of the year.
Point system:




1st place archer earns 4 points for declared club
2nd place archer earns 3 points for declared club
3rd place archer earns 2 points for declared club
Each participant earns 1 point for declared club
Points will be tallied after each Regional Event. Club with the highest point total at the end of the year, will
receive “Club of the Year” award.

The club that wins the Club of the Year Award will choose which archery shop within the Region to display
the award.
The theory behind this is that we can increase participation from all club members because everyone will
contribute to the success of the club just by showing up. You must be a Mission Trail Bowhunters
Association (MTBA) member to have your score counted towards the KMA point total. If you are a
California Bow Hunter (CBH) or National Field Archery Association (NFAA) member you are
automatically an MTBA member. If you only joined KMA, then you are not an MTBA member, but you
can pay your yearly dues (of $10) at the first regional competition you attend.
The Regional Calendar has also been updated. We previously held the Field/Animal round in October, but it
was voted that this be changed to April so that archers participating in State and National shoots will be
better prepared. The 3D championship was then shifted to October, and will be hosted by KMA this year
(they liked what we did last year!).
Regional tournament dates will be:




Field-Hunter-Animal: April 12, 2015 at Mount Madonna Bowmen
900 Round: August 23, 2015 at Black Mountain Bowmen
3D Unmarked: October 11, 2015 at Kings Mountain Archers
Indoor: December 6, 2015 (Location TBD- various indoor shops)
Fees for events will be $40/Family, $30/couple, $20/adult; $10/Youth; $5/cub
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Special congratulations to Jeff Buell for shooting his personal best this month! Wow! The targets were
Field on both halves of the Range (i.e. black face). Please tell Jim Purcell, or leave a note, if you run
targets--I would like to give you thanks in Rabbit Tracks! And I want to especially thank Jim Sullivan for
frequently putting them up!
All five archers entered the Spot Pot but there were no winners; maybe next time!

Where are all the manly men and womanly women,
not to mention enthusiastic kids, who aren't coming
to the club shoots? This monthly "official" NFAA
tournament is a challenge that very few are
meeting! Is everyone too busy? Or intimidated by
the wonderful scores they see above? Remember
that you don't have to beat anyone else; everyone
shoots in his or her own class, and the challenge is
to beat your own previous scores. The best reward
of all is walking through the woods and shooting!
Please join me in welcoming our newest club
members: Mike Adolph of Redwood City, Tony
Crapo of Fremont, Irina Butorina and Alexey
Pashukov of Redwood City and Tracy and Joshua
Jasperson of El Granada.
Range Captains Report
I am planning the first work party of the year on
February 21st, 2015. I have a long list and the
club needs as many volunteers as possible. The
work party will be cancelled in the event of rain.
The retired group installed the new cabinets in the
clubhouse last week and they look great. Thanks to
Mike Fuge, George Grialou, Rick Lombardo, Bob
Nahmens, Mike Orange and Chuck Bloom. They
also went through every drawer and we filled the
trash cans. The clubhouse is finally looking
organized.
With the assistance of Mike Orange I plan to install
the new windows on the 26th of Feb. Within the
next month the plan is to patch the walls, paint the
inside walls and clean the floor. We need to buy
another couch and then the remodeled clubhouse
will be ready for the Father’s Day shoot.
- Gary Johnston, Range Captain

If you have not yet returned your confirmation
form, then please do so as soon as you can so we
know that we mailed your membership card to the

If you have moved since your last renewal, then
please update us with your snail mail address so that
we can send your 2015-2016 renewal material out
to you during this February’s renewal cycle. Some
of you still get bounced hard-copy mail from us and

KING’S MOUNTAIN ARCHERS HANDBOOK
[THIS SECTION TRUNCATED FOR BREVITY. SHOOTING RULES,
RANGE RULES AND THE MEMBER DISIPLINARY PROCESS ARE THE
PRINCIPAL AREAS OF CORRECTION]
SHOOTING RULES
1. General
Registration opens at 8:30 AM and closes at 11:00 AM. 8:45 AM. Shooting will begin at 9:00
AM. Shooting begins as groups are formed.
Monthly shoot date is adhered to, rain or shine.
All archers must remain behind the shooting stake until all archers in the group have shot.
All shooting must be done according to current NFAA rules.
Arrows shot for the animal round must be numbered (1, 2, 3) and shot in sequence. Only the
first scoring arrow is counted. If in doubt of a hit with the first arrow, the second arrow should
be shot, if still no hit or any doubt, the third arrow is to be fired shot.
Binoculars may be used.
Target Captains will be chosen by each shooting group. No arrows are to be pulled or
touched until scoring is completed. On Field, Hunter and Animal targets, the arrow must touch
the line to count the higher score.
2. Shooting groups
All shooting groups will consist of at least 3 archers for the scores to be valid.
Shooting groups will be chosen at scorekeeper’s discretion except at Championship Shoot,
when groups will consist as near as is possible of archers in the same class.
The scorekeeper may assign targets.
3. Scoring
Duplicate scorecards and 2 scorers will be used to facilitate accuracy.
Club Scorekeeper will double-check all scores turned in during the Championship Shoots
before declaring a winner in any class.
Scoring will follow NFAA guidelines.
4. Monthly tournament
In order to qualify for prizes at the monthly tournaments, shooters who are the only ones in
their class/style must beat their previous high score for the year in order to be eligible for
awards.
In May 2000, the Club established a new award for peewees and cubs, to encourage more
children to become active in our sport. The first full shoot completed by a peewee or cub will
have an award.
4. Championship Shoot Qualification
Be a member of King’s Mountain Archers in good standing.
12
Must have shot a minimum of three qualifying shoots (KMA Club Shoots, MTBA Regional
Shoots, and California State shoot field and hunter rounds) in the same class during the year
(October previous through September current is our archery year)—at least two of which shall
be KMA Club Shoots.
The Scorekeeper will verify and publish class qualifications in the August Rabbit Tracks.
Unlike the monthly tournament, shooters who are the only one in their class/style do not
need to beat their previous high score in order to win awards.
Shooters becoming eligible for a change in age division in a shoot year may participate in the
Championship Shoot in the younger of the two age divisions.
The Club may authorize an extra official Club Shoot so that members who have been unable
to achieve three shoots during the year, or members who will be unable to achieve three shoots
in a new class during the year, will be able to become qualified. A request must be made at a
Club meeting to hold such an extra shoot. At least three shooters are required to participate in
the shoot to make it valid.
5. Shooter Disqualification
Any member or members in violation of these Shooting Rules or who willfully breaks any of
the Club’s Standing Rules may be openly challenged.
The Club Scorekeeper may disqualify a member or members so challenged.
A member or members so challenged and disqualified will have a special hearing by the
Board of Directors.
A two-thirds vote of the Board of Directors in attendance shall be considered adequate to
accept or reject the disqualification.
Voting by the Board of Directors shall be by secret ballot. During the voting, no one except
the members of the Board shall be present.
A disqualification that is overturned shall be announced in Rabbit Tracks and any awards due
will be awarded.
Any member or members may request and be granted a hearing by the full membership of
the Club.
The same procedure is to be followed at any Novelty or other Shoot put on by the Club,
concerning shooters who are non-members, with the addition that any disqualification that is
overturned shall be announced in the CBH/SAA newsletter as well as the Rabbit Tracks.
RANGE RULES
1.
2.
3.
4.
Enjoy shooting your range.
Pick up all found arrows, including broken ones.
Return all non-broken arrows you find to the arrow barrel.
Stay on the trails, except when “shagging” lost arrows. When looking for lost arrows,
one member of the shooting group should always stand in front of the target bale. If
you are alone, prop your bow in front of the target, or block the target in some
obvious way. All trails are one way. Shoot targets in sequence.
5. Do not hold up other groups while shagging lost arrows: if you can’t find them
quickly, you’ll need to return at a later time to find them.
13
6. Do not dump trash or drink cans on the range.
7. Do not shoot from any place except designated shooting positions.
8. Shoot only at designated targets
9. Broadheads and crossbows are not allowed on any of the Club’s archery ranges.
10. Observe safety precautions at all times.
11. [new 11] Members are welcome to bring guests to the Range. Members are
responsible for the behavior of their guests.
12. [new 12] In addition, Huddart Park (San Mateo County Park Dept.) rules also
stipulate:
a. No smoking
b. No alcoholic beverages
c. No camping
d. No open fires
e. No pets
f. No firearms, crossbows, or broadheads
g. No shooting at animals or plants: the park is a refuge
h. Children must be supervised at all times
i. No motor vehicles on the trails
[BELOW SECTION ADDED TO ADDRESS MISSING PROCESS]
DISCIPLINARY PROCESS
The clubs sole method of discipline is a revocation of membership for behavior in
continued violation of club rules, county or state laws and regulations. This step is
not taken lightly and only follows repeated complaints.
MEMBER DISMISSAL
(see Bylaws Article V, paragraph 2)
Procedure for expelling a member who violates the agreements of membership shall
be as follows:
1. A complaint, verbal or written, is submitted by any club member to the
Board.
2. The Board shall review the complaint and vote on the validity and on
action to be taken.
a. A minimum of two-thirds of the Board must be in attendance.
b. Decision shall be made by secret ballot of the Board present.
14
3. The Board shall give verbal warning to the Member upon validation of
the complaint, followed by written notice transmitted by certified mail.
This establishes a documented paper-trail for record keeping purposes.
4. Subsequent repetition of the same complaint will result in the Board
issuing an immediate dismissal of membership for the remainder of the
current membership year.
5. The dismissed member may appeal the decision at the general Club
meeting and may be reinstated by a two-thirds secret ballot vote of the
membership attending.
6. Once dismissed, the member is not eligible for renewal for the following
year.
KMA ACTIVITIES
CLUB SHOOTS
[new – separating “official” shoots from “other” shoots]
Tournament Shoots
The Regular Club shoots are normally held the second Sunday of each month during the
entire year.
Shooting starts at nine o’clock. Guests shooting the range on Club Shoot Day pay an
additional $1.00 above the member shooting fee. Guests are not eligible to participate in the
Team Shoot or the Spot Pot. Two 14-target rounds, either Field, Hunter, or a combination of
Field and Hunter, are shot.
[relocated] The Championship Shoot will consist of 14 Hunter, 14 Field, and 14 Animal
targets, for a total of 42 targets. To the total score of these three rounds, the average of each
archer’s three highest qualifying shoots, which have been shot during the preceding 12 months
in KMA monthly competition, will be added. The result is the total Championship Shoot score.
Trophies are awarded at the annual Awards Dinner.
[relocated and revised] The annual Unmarked Yardage Championship Shoot (the Ollie
Venucci Perpetual Unmarked Distance Shoot) is offered by the Second Vice President and is
normally held on the first Saturday in May. Animal targets and scoring are used. Perpetual
trophies are awarded for male and female winners at the Awards Dinner, to be retained until
October of the next year.
[new] Other Shoots
After the Club Shoot or on another day, a Novelty Shoot may be held. A separate fee may
be charged for Novelty Shoots to help pay for prizes and targets. Maximum expense allowed for
reimbursement to members for putting on a Novelty Shoot is $50 $100.
The Club puts on various other shoots during the year, as member interest dictates.
Our annual Novelty Shoot has been held for many years as a fund-raising event open to all
archers from visiting clubs. Club members who are not needed to do the hosting or “Shoot
15
Committee” chores may shoot but are not eligible for any awards, and may not participate in any
raffle.
The Second Vice President may also put on a non-club sponsored Carp Shoot, usually in
May, usually at Los Banos Wildlife Preserve. Members need a fishing license to participate.
Night Shoots (also called Flashlight Shoots) can be held at any time during the year, weather
permitting. Shooting starts at dark, usually following a Club barbecue. The targets and scoring
can be of any kind, determined by the volunteer Shoot Committee. “White Elephant” prizes are
given according to the Shoot Committee’s wishes.
We have had many different types of shoots, such as Half Shoots, Animal Shoots, and
Anniversary Shoots. Any member or members may offer to put on a shoot at any time, either
by themselves or asking for others to join their Shoot Committee, but all proposed shoots must
be voted on at a Club Meeting.
