Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra’s father
Dr. Ashok Chopra, who
was critically ill and
battling with cancer
for quite some time,
passed away today.
As per the reports, his
father breathed his last
today. He was admitted
at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani
Hospital.
It is believed that he was
suffering from cancer
since 2008.
It was in 2005, when
Priyanka was shooting for Rohan Sippy’s
Bluffmaster, her father
fell ill.
Priyanka Chopra who
was juggling with her
film assignments and
attending to her father,
was exceptionally close
to him. She was said to
have been extremely
anxious and worried
about her father’s
health. In fact, Priyanka
put aside all her work
assignments to give her
time to ailing father. It
is heard that Priyanka
even had organized a
Puja at her home for
dad’s recovery.
Dr. Chopra’s condition
deteriorated last week
and despite the stress,
Priyanka went about
fulfilling her work
commitments until her
father was admitted to
the hospital.
It is ironic that Priyanka
Chopra’s father passed
away when Father’s
Day just round the
corner (June 16)
Our heartfelt condolences

Can’t stay away from comedy
Assuring fans that his role as a CID officer in the
forthcoming action thriller “Enemmy” will provide
adequate humour, popular Bollywood comedian
Johnny Lever Thursday said he cannot stay away
from comedy.
“Mai comedy se dur nehi reh sakta (I can’t stay
away from comedy). Yes, you will see me doing
adequate comedy in the action thriller. This role will
show that even a person who makes others laugh can
get angry,” Lever told reporters here at a promotion
for his forthcoming flick “Enemmy”.
Directed by Ashu Trikha, “Enemmy” is a cop action drama, which features Mithun Chakraborty and
actor Suneil Shetty in lead roles. Also, Mithun’s son
Mahaakshay plays a CID officer in the film.
Lever has played endearing characters providing comic relief in films like “Kaho Naa Pyar Hai”,
“Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”, “Golmaal 3″ and “Yamla
Pagla Deewana” among others.
“I definitely want to work in comedy films, as you
see I look more like a comedian. The audience also
likes me in that way and even if I am not delivering any dialogue my face makes them laugh,” said
Lever.
Slated to release June 21, “Enemmy” also features
Kay Kay Menon and Yuvika Chaudhary of “Om
Shanti Om” fame.

Jiah’s Khan’s suicide has
created a sorrowful atmosphere and Aditya Pancholi’s
family is being targeted for
the tragic loss. Suraj Pancholi, son of Aditya Pancholi and
the late actress’ boyfriend is
being labelled the reason for
Jiah Khan’s suicide.
Jiah Khan, 25 hung
herself in her Juhu home on
June 4 and Suraj was questioned for the same as reports
emerged that the actress was
2
depressed due to her not so
blooming Bollywood career
and a sad personal life.
“If Suraj is to be blamed
then please make him the villain,” says protective father
Aditya.
Shobhaa De , in her blog
post commented, “Like
father, like son” in reference
to Aditya and Suraj Pancholi
with which Aditya is very
unhappy.
“What’s Shobhaa De’s
problem with me and my
son? What does she mean
by saying, ‘Like father, like
son?’ Let the truth come
out. If Suraj has done some
wrong, let it come out. But
don’t condemn him in your
column for something he
hasn’t done. Everyone has
children,” said the hurt
father.
Suraj Pancholi, (left) son of Aditya Pancholi.
He said: “Suraj ki kya
galti hai (What’s Suraj’s
fault)? They’re probably
looking for a villain in this
story, and Suraj has been
selected as the villain of this
story. If you take Raavan out
of the ‘Ramayan’, it loses
its impact. What is Sholay
without Gabbar Singh?”
“For the last three days,
Source: Bollywood Celebden
I’ve done what I could do as
a concerned father and the
head of my family. Now I’ve
the space to see what loss has
Jiah’s family suffered. We
were there – my son Suraj
and I, for the funeral. Not
for a second did we think
we should stay away just to
avoid trouble.
“Jiah and her mother (ac-
tress Rabiya Amin) are our
friends. We are not going to
turn our backs on them just
because some questions are
being asked by some people
who don’t know the truth and
are only interested in being
judgmental,” he added.
According to Aditya, even
his son is going through
a tough phase losing Jiah
Khan.
“Suraj is very hurt and
shaken. But what can he do?
I know Suraj will be fine.
But what about Jiah’s mother
and sisters? Would they ever
be normal again? Looking at
Suraj’s grief, I am reminded
of Jiah’s family’s grief,” he
said.
Aditya also believes it’s
wrong to blame only the
broken relationship between
Jiah and Suraj as the reason
for her suicide.
“There must be other factors. Jiah bottled up all her
emotions. Suraj tells me she
never raised her voice. He
says the maximum she ever
raised her voice to say was,
‘Suraj, this is not done’.
“I want to request people
to not try to make my son
the villain. It’s circumstances
that played villain in Jiah’s
life. If that one moment when
she took that drastic step had
been averted, she’d still be
alive,” he added.
Well, blaming someone
for someone’s death is very
hurting and without any practical evidence it is cruel too.
We hope Jiah’s family recovers from their tragic loss
and this matter settles down
in the best way possible for
both the families.

Having won awards for his portrayal

Tripathy says he has finally a made a
place for himself in Bollywood, albeit
with difficulty.
A small town-boy from Orissa, Pitobash is a qualified engineer who quit
his job and came to Mumbai to study at
the FTII. “My parents were not happy
with my decision initially because they
thought that acting was not a stable
career. But now, when they see me, they
are happy,” says Pitobash who was in
Lucknow recently as part of the cast of
Craig Gillespie’s Million Dollar Arm.
“I was lucky to get this role. I had
seriously never thought I could be part
of a Hollywood film, but now I am extremely happy because my character is
a significant one and I will be going to

struggles. Mine was more because

All are equally responsible for YJHD success
Source: Hindustan Times
After Anurag Basu’s Barfi!
(2012), Ranbir Kapoor’s recent
release, director Ayan Mukerji’s
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
(YJHD) is the actor’s second
film that has crossed the Rs. 100
crore mark at the box-office. In
fact, YJHD reached the magic
figure in just seven days of its
release.
Based on these figures, the
reports might give the entire
credit to Ranbir for the film’s
success, but his father Rishi Kapoor states that his son was only
a part of the team that made the
film such a hit.
“I think the credit should
go to Ayan and Karan Johar
(producer of YJHD). Ranbir
has worked hard on this film
as he does for all his films, but
the whole team has worked
towards the success of YJHD.
Be it Ranbir, Deepika Padukone
and Kalki Koechlin (co-stars),
or Pritam (music director of
YJHD) — all of them are
equally responsible for making
the film a hit,” says Rishi.
However, the veteran actor is
proud that his son’s film is buzzing at the box-office currently.
“Being Ranbir’s father, I am
very happy to see the response
to YJHD. I am getting hundreds
of calls throughout the day for
it,” says Rishi.
Talking about response, the
trailer of Rishi’s upcoming film
D-Day, directed by Nikhil Advani, has been getting a positive
reaction on YouTube too. “My
film, which hasn’t even released
yet, has already got over a billion hits on YouTube. I am very
happy seeing the response,”
says Rishi, who is currently

Mithun Chakraborty:
My son better dancer than me

National Award winning actor
Mithun Chakraborty, hailed as
the “disco dancer” of Bollywood, has asserted that
his son Mahaakshay is a
better dancer than him.
“My son is a better dancer than me. I
always try to encourage
him in his endeavours,”
Mithun told reporters
at a promotion for his
forthcoming flick Enemmy.
Sharing screen
space with his son in the
forthcoming action thriller,
he will be seen as a senior
CBI officer, with Mahaakshay
portraying young CID recruit.
However, son Mahaakshay
contradicted his father, averring that
there can be “only one original disco
dancer”.
“I believe that there is only one
original disco dancer, and I think that
is my dad. But I have tried my best
to do a different kind of dance theme
here. I have danced with my father in a
promotional song in the film and I hope
the audience will like it,” said
Mahaakshay.
Mahaakshay made his
acting debut as Mimoh
with the film Jimmy
in 2008 and later he
was seen in movies

Loot. But he could
not get a strong
foothold in the
industry.

says he is looking forward to their working

It’s a really funny script. What Vishal

have come up with is quite gorgeous. And
I’m really looking forward to doing this film.
I am very happy to get to work with Madhuri.
Whatever work we’ve done together so far
has been very sketchy,” said Naseer.
Recollecting his past collaborations with
Madhuri, Naseer said, “Madhuri and I have
worked together in Rajkumar, which was not
so nice. And then we did Gaja Gamini together. Maybe you should ask Madhuri what
Gaja Gamini was all about. I still haven’t
been able to figure it out. We did Tridev but
didn’t have any work together in this film.”
Talking about their roles in Dedh Ishqiya,
Naseer said, “We play two con-persons trying
to constantly out-con each other.”
Dedh Ishqiya is a sequel to 2010 film
Ishqiya starring Vidya Balan, Naseer and
Arshad Warsi. While Naseer and Arshad
would reprise their roles, Madhuri has taken
Vidya’s place.

GARAM MASALA
Interview with Madhuri Dixit
Ram doesn’t control my career
Source: Times of India
M
adhuri Dixit is the second
actor in Hindi cinema
after Amitabh Bachchan to have skillfully
resurrected her slipping
career. And just as the Big B, she has also
been given a warm welcome back by people
around. Post marriage with US-based doctor
Shriram Nene in 1999, Madhuri stayed away
from the greasepaint, arc lights and cameras,
but a Yash Raj film Aaja Nachle (2007) lured
her back from the picturesque Denver, USA
to the gritty Mumbai studios and almost
nailed her chances of a career revival.
But Mads proved stronger than her unfavourable circumstances. She rose from the
ashes, shrugged off the ‘has-been’ dust and
bounced back with renewed energy.
TV has given her the centre stage with
Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and in movies, Karan
Johar breathed a new life into her career
with the hit ‘Ghagra’ number that’s currently topping the charts. Her chemistry with
a younger co-star Ranbir Kapoor (in Yeh
Jawaani Hai Deewani’s ‘Ghagra’ song) is
another proof. Tell her that and she launches
her famous smile. There are endorsements
deals and more movies to talk about. But
what she is most excited about is her new
venture online that promotes dance — the
reason for Madhuri’s being. We meet her at
Filmistan Studio to wrap up this long pending big interview.
Let’s start with your new song ‘Ghagra’ in Karan Johar’s film. The chemistry
between Ranbir and you was incredibly
palpable. How did you manage that?
Ranbir’s fabulous expressions lend an
additional value to anything he does. In this
case, it added a good proportion of ‘mirchi’
(hot quotient) to the song. He has got very
infectious energy. It was like a ched-chaad
(playful teasing) between Ranbir and me.
Also I guess the fact that we enjoyed each
moment of the dance and were pretty
comfortable with each other, made a difference to the song. And then there was Karan
(Johar), Farah (Khan), Ayan (Mukerji) and
the whole team.
What if you were offered to do a movie
whose script revolved around an older
woman and a younger man? Would you do
it?
I can’t say now. I have to listen to the
script. It depends on how it is treated. Everything depends on the treatment.
doing my Kathak and I rehearse every day.
Also, I’m eating right and keeping in shape.
I’m a non-smoker and non-drinker and essentially a happy person. That’s what counts
the most. Your well-being is reflected in your
personality.
‘There’s a great amount of professional
growth in this city for Ram and me’
Now that you’ve permanently moved to
Mumbai from Denver which according to
you provides a more quality life?
They are two different kind of lives, so
a comparison would be unfair, but I would
say there is thrill here and serenity out there.
Mumbai is like Manhattan.
There’s a certain pace, a social life and
the thrill of a professional life. Given our
background, there’s a great amount of
professional growth in this city for both Ram
and me. We have our roots in India, in this
city and an infrastructure in place to kickstart something in a big way. So naturally
I see much more opportunity here than in
Denver. In Denver, I was a homebody, and
that’s a life I’d chosen with great happiness.
I wanted that break from the arch lights
and focus on building a lovely home,
have some fun, look after my kids and
do things that I had missed out on
while pursuing my dream. But I miss
Denver, especially the mountains,
the cool air and the sprawling
space.
and live those moments completely. You
will not get back this time again, so live
every moment you get.
You must have seen Ranbir
Kapoor as a teenager?
I don’t know how old or
young he was then! I have
a great amount of respect
and admiration for
him as an actor. He
is such a fine actor!
To have stepped
out of the
shadows of his
famous parents (Rishi
Kapoor and

n Continued on
page 10
Like what?
Out there I had enrolled
myself into a guitar class, I
learnt driving and cooking,
and I would go shopping
to the neighbourhood
vegetable market. We
built a gourmet kitchen
in our house in Denver. And I even had
the time to indulge
in small talk with
my neighbours. At
hindsight, it was
so much fun! I
guess life offers
you opportunities to live
your dream.
We just
have to
accept
what
comes
our
way
Is it true that Ram has full control over
your career now?
No, he doesn’t. My movie career is far
from Ram and my production house RnM.
That’s my area of expertise and the decisions
are made by me. His management is restricted within our production house. Dance
With Madhuri is our big project together
and this is where Ram takes care of the
technology and I take care of the artistic
side. I go to our office for a few hours as
all decisions are made there. But he is
my husband and I discuss everything
about my life with him.
Do you find Ranbir charming,
naughty or shy?
He is all this and much more.
He can be very charming and I
heard that he is naughty on the
sets. But I felt that he was very
shy. When I was on the sets I
didn’t hear a sound from him. He
was always in the background,
either watching the shots or
rehearsing the dance.
You’ve been looking younger
and stunning of late. What’s
your secret?
I’m suddenly dancing a lot. My
new endeavour, Dance With Madhuri, requires me to wear my dancing
shoes almost every day. I’ve started

own identity so early in life
truly is commendable.
He is very professional and
inspiring for his co-stars and
directors. Having actors like
him encourages filmmakers
to make different kind of cinema. He is a fearless actor in
every sense.
Who is your personal
favourite amongst the young
actors today?
It’ll be very unfair to
comment on that as I haven’t
seen everyone’s work. I have
seen most of Ranbir’s work,
like Rockstar (2011), Wake
Up Sid (2009), Rocket Singh
(2009) and Barfi! (2012). I
have seen Shahid Kapoor
and Kareena Kapoor’s work
in Jab We Met (2007) and
they were fabulous. So were
Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti
Chopra in Ishaqzaade (2012).
I’m yet to see Varun Dhawan
or Siddhart Malhotra’s acting
and I don’t know what their
capacity is.
So what are your plans
now?
I have a long and exciting
road ahead. Right now, I am
busy with my upcoming film
Gulab Gang’s post production work, and in a few more
days my next film Dedh
Interview with Madhuri Dixit
Ishqiya will be complete. I’m
shooting for Jhalak every
day and I’ve signed few
more new endorsements.
And of course, there is my
new undertaking — my
passion project — an online
dance academy website
which enables you to
be a dancer. You can
learn from the
video uploaded
on the website, shoot
yourself
dancing
and then
put up
the
video
on the
website
too.
We
didn’t
know
you were
interested
in the tech
world.
Actually
my husband
(Ram) had his
own software
company before he
did medicine, so he has
experience in this field. I
am a very passionate dancer.
So we clubbed our expertise
and decided that the digital
space would be the best
place. I want to take this art
form to every house. This is
my way of giving something
back to my fans.
So
I’ve just embarked on it.
I can only say, Inshallah! I
want my website to be like
Wikipedia.
I’ll try
hip hop, Bollywood dance or
Indian classical — you name
it and it’s all going to be
available under one umbrella.
I’m getting Mahagurus, the
best in their field of dance, to
teach online. I recently had
Pt. Birju Maharaj share
his dancing experiences
online.
No monetising plan?
At some
point we
would get

mode,
though
we
finally
you’ve realised

and

every form of
dance. Be it freestyle, salsa,

Even if
we do, it’ll
be affordable. And
whatever is
earned from it,
a part of it will go
back into the project,
while the rest will go
to charity. Right now, I
am treating it as a passion
and trying to reach out to as
many as people I can.
Is this also another step
towards film production?
There’re bigger plans,
but right now we’re on the
digital platform and want
to expand. I believe all the
screens, be it digital or TV,
are going to be one soon.
And with 4G coming in,
digital is clearly the future.
About producing a film, we
would love to do that at some
point. When we hear some
good script, we will get some
good actors together.
Will you remain an actor
forever?
Right now, I don’t see
myself giving up acting as
this is an interesting time
in cinema. Hindi cinema is
celebrating actors of all age
groups and giving opportunities to explore their talent in
full splendour. However, it’s
interesting to see that I’m
enacting diverse roles and
exploring many dimensions
of my professional life. I’m
an actor and a judge, and I
am teaching dance, so in a
sense I am a Guru to my pupils and there is other stuff.
It’s an exciting time for me.
So, yes, I don’t see myself as
an uni-dimensional professional.
Give us a sneak peek
into Gulab Gang and Dedh
Ishqiya.
I play a strong woman
in Gulab Gang. The movie
is about women empowerment and women education.
Basically, it’s about a group
of vigilantes who solve
problems existing in society
which are not particularly
pertaining to women.
Whereas in Dedh Ishqiya,
my role is very vulnerable, of
a very soft and different kind
of a woman.
You said you have no
problem doing intimate
10
scenes in movies?
Oh, that was said in the
context to Dedh Ishqiya.
You’ll have to watch the
movie to understand what I
meant when I said it. Having
said this, I don’t mind doing
romantic scenes provided the
treatment is aesthetic. And
everything would depend on
what the subject is and the
sensibilities of the director.
If I feel squeamish about
doing a romantic scene, I’ll
not do it.
Your co-stars like Salman
Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and
Aamir Khan are ruling Bollywood today, whereas their
female counterparts aren’t as
prominent as them.
It’s great to see them
up there. All of them have
worked hard. I still remember when I was working with
Akshay, he wasn’t that big,
but was getting there. And
all of sudden he has come
up. He deserves the success.
Look at the phenomenal
rise of Salman. He deserves
every bit, especially because
he never bothered about
slots and positions in spite of
working very hard. That’s the
best part about him. People
ask me if I want to work with
these co-stars. Why wouldn’t
I if a suitable role comes my
way?
Do you want to share
your diet plan with our
readers?
Sure. I have five small
meals throughout the day.
My morning starts with a
small breakfast that consists
of oatmeal or three egg
whites and toast, followed
by tea. I’m a tea drinker and
I need minimum two cups
a day. And then I have a
mid-meal comprising nuts or
curd with half a fruit. Lunch
is usually a piece of chicken,
some vegetables and carbs (I
prefer roti to rice and bajre
ki roti is my choice). A little
amount of carb is necessary during the day as we’re
involved in physical activity.
In the evening, I have an
egg-white and a cup of tea
or some form of protein. I
have an early dinner which is
by 7.30 pm and it includes a
bowl of salad, grilled fish or
chicken and vegetables.
I want to act with
Salman Khan
In a nice commercial potboiler, something like Hum
Aapke Hai Kaun part 2.
Shah Rukh Khan
In a nice romantic film,
with a perfect romantic setup
and beautiful music.
Akshay Kumar
In a good action thriller or
maybe a spy film.
Aamir Khan
In a nice social drama,
based on relationships. In
short, in a meaningful and
popular film.
Ranbir Kapoor
In a crime thriller! There
has to be some unspoken
electricity between us, more
on the lines of partners- incrime where one is constantly trying to outdo the other.
It’ll be good fun.

Vishakha Singh:
I am not Katrina Kaif to take it easy
Source: times of India
When it rains, it pours - This could
well be true for Vishakha Singh who
has as many as three films of her lines
up for release in quick succession.
As a matter of fact, two of these films
- Fukrey and Ankur Arora Murder
Case - would be releasing on the
same day!
‘’Actually, I got these films backto-back. Last August I started working on Vikram Bhatt’s Ankur Arora
Murder Case and then in September,
Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani
offered me Fukrey. When filmmakers
like these offer you films, you don’t
think too much. Moreover when the
scripts by themselves are so fantastic,
there is no reason to go slow,’’ says
Vishakha who had her share of waiting period after making an impressive
appearance in Khelein Hum Jee Jaan
Sey two and a half years back.
Meanwhile she isn’t slowing down
as she is the only leading lady in
Bajatey Raho which is produced by
Eros and has Tusshar Kapoor as the
male lead.
‘’This film came my way in January. I guess it has all come well as a
part of a flow. I didn’t even have time
to think whether I should slow down
at all. In any case, I am not a major
star like a Katrina Kaif to take it easy
and be selective. Bajatey Raho is
such a cool comedy and after playing
an emotional part in Ankur Arora
Murder Case and a sorted character in
Fukrey, it was good to find myself in
a fun zone,’’ details Vishakha.
While Fukrey and Ankur Arora
Murder Case release this weekend,
Bajatey Raho is slated for 26 July
release. Meanwhile Vishakha would
soon be beginning a film down South
as well.
Aamir Khan’s 18-year-old son, Junaid, is all grown up. And Khan Junior
has followed his star father into Bollywood. But unlike Aamir, Junaid hasn’t
taken to acting (yet). Instead, he’s taken
up the role of an assistant director to
Rajkumar Hirani on his upcoming film,
Peekay. Aamir is also starring in the
film.
“It was my suggestion that he learns
something about cinema and gets a new
experience in life before he makes his
choices. It will help him in the long
run. Let him discover it and tell us what
he wants to do in the future.
“Once he has a little understanding
of the craft, let him choose. It’s too
early to assume that he will end up in
movies. It could be acting or directing;
everything is going to be his choice. He
is doing his B.Com now,” Aamir had
told HT in an interview late last year.
Looking good, and with a wellmaintained physique, we welcome
Junaid into Bollywood.

Suicide’s a
cowardly act:

Vishakha Singh.
Bollywood actress Riya Sen is saddened with Jiah Khan’s suicide who
hung herself from her a ceiling fan
in her apartment in Juhu on 3rd June
(2013). It is believed that Jiah took
this drastic step due to many reasons,
including her break up with Aditya
Pancholi’s son Sooraj. A six page
suicide letter was also found which was
addressed to Sooraj Pancholi.
Expressing her shock Riya says,
“It’s upsetting to think that such a beautiful and talented girl like Jiah who was
just 25 had to commit suicide, which is
such a cowardly act. I’m sure life must
have had so much more to offer her in
due course of time. Also though easier
said than done, I think one must learn
to be bigger than a situation rather than
fall into it. But each to their own. We
are no one to judge. What I really feel
sad about is that one shouldn’t always
give up everything just because of
failure in life.

However, her habit of documenting her

Earlier this year, she was targeted after

One angry Twitter user wrote: “Why r

Hours later, she responded: “I don’t

Kelly Clarkson - catch my
breath
I don’t wanna be left behind
Distance was a friend of mine
Catching breath in a web of lies
I’ve spent most of my life
Riding waves, playing acrobat
Shadowboxing the other half
Learning how to react
I’ve spent most of my time
Catching my breath, letting it go,
turning my cheek for the sake of the
show
Now that you know, this is my life, I
won’t be told it’s supposed to be right
Catch my breath, no one can hold me
back, I ain’t got time for that
Catch my breath, won’t let them get
me down, it’s all so simple now
Addicted to the love I found
Heavy heart, now a weightless cloud
Making time for the ones that count
I’ll spend the rest of my time
Laughing hard with the windows
down
Leaving footprints all over town
Keeping faith kinda comes around
I’ll spent the rest of my life
Catching my breath, letting it go,
turning my cheek for the sake of the
show
Now that you know, this is my life, I
won’t be told it’s supposed to be right

Feel So Close Lyrics
Calvin Harris
I feel so close to you right now
It’s a force field
I wear my heart upon my sleeve, like
a big deal
Your love pours down on me, surrounds me like a waterfall
And there’s no stopping us right now
I feel so close to you right now
[Dance beat plays]
I feel so close to you right now
It’s a force field
I wear my heart upon my sleeve, like
a big deal
Your love pours down on me, surrounds me like a waterfall
And there’s no stopping us right now
I feel so close to you right now
[Dance beat plays]
And there’s no stopping us right now
And there’s no stopping us right now
And there’s no stopping us right now
I feel so close to you right now...

Man of Steel not altering
tornado depiction

In the upcoming film, Man of Steel, Superman faces off
against ruthless outcasts from his home planet. The last son
of Krypton also encounters a more realistic force of nature
on earth: a deadly tornado. Man of Steel director Zack Snyder said there was never any discussion about altering
the pivotal scene involving a twister following recent
deadly storms in Oklahoma.
“He’s changed by those events,” said Snyder during an
interview to promote the movie. “If anything, we feel like
our Superman has a connection - not to make light of it - to
the kind of grief that happens during those kinds of natural
disasters. Also, in a sad way, even Superman can’t change
that.”
A top-of-the-scale EF5 tornado hit the Oklahoma City
suburb of Moore on May 20, killing 24 people. Another round
of violent storms that produced a separate EF5 tornado struck
last Friday, leaving nearly two dozen people dead.
“It’s a terrible tragedy, mother nature doing its thing,” said
Henry Cavill, who plays Clark Kent and Kal-El. “I hope that
everyone who can salvage things can salvage things, grieve if
they need to grieve, move on from stuff and repair and rebuild,
if they have the opportunity. I can’t even imagine what it’s like.”
The tornado scene in Man of Steel, can briefly be spotted
in the latest trailers for the Warner Bros. film, which is set for
release June 14.
Earlier this year, Warner Bros. released Gangster Squad after
delaying the shoot-’em-up movie so filmmakers could rework a
key scene involving an attack on a theater after the deadly shooting at a midnight screening of, The Dark Knight Rises, in Aurora,
Colo.

1976–1988)
Grace Hightower (m. 1997)
Children: 6 (including Drena De
Niro)
Parents: Robert De Niro, Sr. and
Virginia Admiral
Early Life
Robert De Niro was born in Greenwich Village, New York City, the son
of Virginia Holton Admiral, a painter
and poet, and Robert De Niro, Sr.,
an abstract expressionist painter and
sculptor.
His father was of Italian and Irish descent, and his mother was of English,
German, French, and Dutch ancestry.
His Italian great-grandparents,
Giovanni De Niro and Angelina Mercurio, emigrated from Ferrazzano, in
the province of Campobasso, Molise;
and his paternal grandmother, Helen
O’Reilly, was the granddaughter of
Edward O’Reilly, an immigrant from
Ireland.
De Niro’s parents, who had met at
the painting classes of Hans Hofmann
in Provincetown (Cape Cod), Massachusetts, divorced when he was
three years old. De Niro was raised by
his mother in the Little Italy neighborhood of Manhattan, and in Greenwich
Village. His father lived within walking
distance and Robert spent much time
with him as he was growing up.
De Niro attended PS 41, a public elementary school in Manhattan through
the sixth grade, and then went to
Elisabeth Irwin High School for seventh
and eighth grades, the private upper
school of the Little Red School House.
He was accepted at the High School of
Music and Art for the ninth grade, but
only attended for a short time before
transferring to a public junior high
school. He began high school at the
private McBurney School and later attended the private Rhodes Preparatory
School, although he never graduated
from either. Nicknamed “Bobby Milk”
for his pallor, De Niro hung out with a
group of street kids as a youth in Little
Italy, some of whom have remained his
lifelong friends.
The direction of his future had
already been determined by his stage
debut at age ten when he played the
Cowardly Lion in a school production of
The Wizard of Oz.
Along with finding relief from shyness through performing, De Niro was
also entranced by the movies, and
he dropped out of high school at age
sixteen to pursue acting.
De Niro studied acting at the Stella
Adler Conservatory, as well as Lee
Strasberg’s Actors Studio.
Career
Acting
De Niro’s first movie role, in collaboration with Brian De Palma, was
in 1963, at the age of 20, when he
appeared opposite his friend Jill Clayburgh in The Wedding Party; however,
the film was not released until 1969. He
then played in Roger Corman’s 1970
Bloody Mama, which starred Shelly
Winters as Ma Barker. He gained popular attention with his role as a dying
Major League Baseball player in Bang
the Drum Slowly (1973). That same
year, he began his collaboration with
Martin Scorsese, when he played the
smalltime crook Johnny Boy, alongside Harvey Keitel’s Charlie, in Mean
Streets (1973).
De Niro at the 2011 Cannes Film
Festival
In 1974, De Niro had a pivotal role in
Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather
Part II, playing the young Vito Corleone
– the director having remembered
his previous auditions for the roles of
Sonny Corleone, Michael Corleone,
Carlo Rizzi and Paulie Gatto, in The
Godfather. His performance earned
him his first Academy Award, for Best
Supporting Actor,[2] although Coppola
accepted the award, as De Niro was
not present at the Oscar ceremony. He
became the first actor to win an Academy Award speaking mainly a foreign
language, in this case, multiple Sicilian
dialects (although he delivered a few
lines in English). De Niro and Marlon
Brando, who played the older Vito
Corleone in the first film, are the only
actors to have won Oscars portraying
the same fictional character. Brando
and De Niro came together onscreen
for the only time in The Score (2001).
After working with Scorsese in Mean
Streets, he had a successful working
relationship with the director in films
such as Taxi Driver (1976), New York,
New York (1977), Raging Bull (1980),
The King of Comedy (1983), Goodfellas (1990), Cape Fear (1991), and Casino (1995). They also acted together
in Guilty by Suspicion and provided
their voices for the animated feature
Shark Tale.
Taxi Driver was particularly important
to De Niro’s career: his iconic performance as Travis Bickle shot him to
stardom and forever linked De Niro’s
name with Bickle’s famous “You talkin’
to me?” monologue, which De Niro
largely improvised. The role of Travis
Bickle earned him his first Academy
Award Nomination for Best Actor.
In 1976, De Niro appeared, along
with Gérard Depardieu and Donald
Sutherland, in Bernardo Bertolucci’s
epic biographical exploration of life in
Italy before World War II, Novecento
(1900), seen through the eyes of two
Italian childhood friends at the opposite
sides of society’s hierarchy. In 1978,
De Niro played Michael Vronsky in the
acclaimed Vietnam War film The Deer
Hunter, for which he was nominated for
Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Fearing he had become typecast in
mob roles, De Niro began expanding
into occasional comedic roles in the
mid-1980s and has had much success
there as well, with such films as Brazil
(1985), the hit action-comedy Midnight
Run (1988), Analyze This (1999), opposite actor/comedian Billy Crystal, Meet
the Parents (2000) and Meet the Fockers (2004), both opposite Ben Stiller.
Other films include “True Confessions” (1981), Falling in Love (1984),
Once Upon a Time in America (1984),
The Mission (1986), Angel Heart
(1987), The Untouchables (1987),
Goodfellas (1990), Awakenings (1990),
Heat (1995), The Fan (1996), Sleepers
(1996), Wag the Dog (1997), Jackie
Brown and Ronin (1998). In 1997, he
re-teamed with Harvey Keitel and Ray
Liotta along with Sylvester Stallone in
the crime drama Cop Land. De Niro
played a supporting role, taking a back
seat to Stallone, Keitel, and Liotta.
In 1993, he also starred in This
Boy’s Life, featuring then-rising child
actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey
Maguire. Around this time, he was offered the role of Mitch Leary in In the
Line of Fire, opposite Clint Eastwood.
However, due to scheduling conflicts
with A Bronx Tale, he turned the role
down in favor of John Malkovich, who,
himself, received an Academy Award
nomination for the role. De Niro would
later reference In Line of Fire, along
with Dirty Harry and Magnum Force,
two more of Eastwood’s films, in Righteous Kill.
In 1995, De Niro starred in Michael
Mann’s police action-thriller Heat, along
with fellow actor and long-time friend,
Al Pacino. The duo drew much attention from fans, as both have generally
been compared throughout their careers. Though Pacino and De Niro both
starred in The Godfather Part II, they
shared no screen time. De Niro and
Pacino once again appeared together,
in the crime thriller Righteous Kill.
In 2000, De Niro played the role of
Master Chief Billy Sunday opposite
Cuba Gooding, Jr. in the George Tillman, Jr. biographical film Men of Honor,
based on the life of Carl Brashear, the
first African American to become a U.S.
Navy Master Diver.
