OFFICIAL WELCOME
UNISMART
ORIENTATION EXPO
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students
and Education) Professor David
Sadler warmly invites you to attend
the Official Welcome, your formal
introduction to UTAS. The keynote
address will be from the ViceChancellor, Professor Peter Rathjen.
During this session you will hear about
the services available to students at
UTAS, where they are located and how
to use them. Learn how to make your
start at UTAS as smooth and easy as
possible.
The Orientation Expo is when the
Sandy Bay campus comes to life.
Everyone is welcome to join in and
enjoy their first day at UTAS. We have
arranged lots of fun activities designed
to introduce you to the services at
UTAS and around Hobart.
We highly recommend your attendance
at this event and have planned a
number of other activities to follow so
that you can make the most of your
first day on campus.
Space is limited for this event and
registration is essential. Please
register your attendance early through
our website: http://www.utas.edu.au/
first-year/orientation
Contact [email protected] if you
experience problems registering or
would like to cancel your registration.
This session is highly recommended
for international students and
school-leavers. UniSmart takes place
immediately after the Official Welcome
to UTAS. Places are limited at both
sessions and registration is essential.
Note: UniSmart is not the same as
UniStart. UniStart an intensive program
that introduces you to the academic
skills and expectations at university.
UniSmart and UniStart are two different
programs covering different topics and
we strongly recommend new students
attend both. Please check the UniStart
website for more details on the UniStart
program: www.utas.edu.au/unistart
You can sign up to UTAS clubs and
societies, meet staff and learn about
the different services they provide as
well as take away some freebies.
Don’t forget to join in on a campus
tour, enjoy the free lunch and introduce
yourself to new people!
The Orientation Expo is held outside in
the beautiful Central Mall area, outside
Lazenby’s cafe.

Faculty and Course
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
It is essential for all students to attend these sessions as they will provide you with information
regarding your degree and enrolment and support services available to you. You will also get an
opportunity to meet staff and students in your study area. If you are a distance student, we strongly
recommend attending, but understand that this may not be possible. Please access the Online
Orientation materials if you are unable to attend in-person.
WHY DO SOME OF THESE SESSIONS LOOK DIFFERENT?
Some faculties offer a general orientation session that all students are expected to attend. After the
general faculty orientation session students may be separated into their disciplines or majors. Other
faculties hold orientation events specifically for your course. Please check the details of each of the
sessions on pages 9 - 23 to ensure you attend all that are relevant to your studies. Combined degree
students should attend both of their faculty sessions. If you are unable to attend both sessions due
to timetable clashes you may be able to access a session recording online. Please contact your
faculty to check if this applies to you.
Please arrive at your faculty or course session 15 minutes prior to the advertised start time to be
seated and to receive any printed materials. If in doubt about which sessions you should attend
or if you have any questions about your course please contact your faculty directly.

Check out the video modules on Understanding Uni and Managing Your Online Studies:

DISTANCE STUDENTS
We know that our distance students sometimes find it difficult to attend Orientation face-to-face. We’ve created a whole module
relevant to you and your transition to Uni. Please visit: www.utas.edu.au/orientation/
FINAL STEPS
You’re nearly there! Once you’ve attended Orientation and collected your ID card, you can also do the following:
Put some money on your CAPS account for printing on campus. Insert your student ID card in to one of the CAPS machines
located near photocopiers, create a PIN number and insert money to credit your account. You can also collect an after-hours swipe
card to access computer labs. Cards can be purchased from the Contact Centre in the TUU building.
TOUCH BASE
If you have any questions about the above list please be sure to touch base with your Student Adviser at:
www.utas.edu.au/first-year. After you’ve looked at this information, make sure you jump over to our Facebook page and like us!
Make contact early with any of the support services you might need to help make your transition and your time at UTAS run more
smoothly (Counselling, Careers, Disability Services, Student Advisers). Go to www.utas.edu.au/students

FAQs
DO I REALLY HAVE TO GO TO ORIENTATION?
Orientation is considered to be the start of your university career, so it is
really important that you plan ahead so that you can attend.
There are some components of orientation that are compulsory for all
students. Attendance at your faculty or course orientation is compulsory
for all students studying on-campus. Please note that all international
students must attend the International sessions, as well as their faculty
or course session.
DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?
Some sessions will include free food and drinks, but not all - this is clearly stated in the guide. Bring your own lunch or purchase
your lunch from one of the food outlets on campus or nearby. We also suggest you bring a sun hat, bottle of water, notepad and
pen.
WHO DO I CONTACT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT MY ENROLMENT?
Your faculty is your first point of contact if you have questions about your enrolment. Please refer to page 8 of this guide for all the
relevant contact details.
WHAT IS SSAF?
The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is a compulsory services and amenities fee charged to students. The legislation
and guidelines behind the fee provides a list of non-academic and non-political services on which universities are permitted to
spend the funds. The fee will provide improved services and amenities for all students of the University through increased revenue.
In practice, this will mean an increase in the quality and quantity of the services available to you at UTAS. Orientation is one of
the many programs funded under the SSAF. Please refer to the SSAF website for further information about how to pay your SSAF
and more comprehensive information about how SSAF funding is distributed:
www.utas.edu.au/students/student-services-and-amenities-fee-ssaf
WHERE CAN I PURCHASE FOOD DURING ORIENTATION?
There are a couple of options for purchasing food on-campus. You can visit Lazenby’s cafe in the Central Mall area or visit the
Refectory in the Tasmania University building. The ‘Ref’ offers the most reasonably priced meals for students to purchase and is
also close to the bank, ATM, Co-op bookshop and the newsagent.
HOW DO I GET TO CAMPUS?
UTAS encourages all staff and students to choose sustainable transport options to access UTAS facilities. There are many
options, including public transport, car-pooling, cycling or walking. Please refer to the Commercial Services and Development
website for further information: www.utas.edu.au/commercial-services-development/ If parking on campus, you must park in the
designated pay-and-display voucher areas. Fines apply in other areas. Please refer to the campus maps for more details about
where parking areas are located at: www.utas.edu.au/campus-services/parking
HOW DO I GET A STUDENT ID CARD?
During Orientation Week you can get your ID card issued from the Morris Miller Library. Please bring some photo identification
and your student identification number (as shown on your letter of offer) when you come to get your card.
