As such, we continue to look for ways to expand our services to respond to the ever-changing, ever-growing needs in the community. Through the addition of a fifth neighborhood clinic, we are offering yet another medical home option to reach more underserved children. And with the dedication of the new Joe K. Pace Hangar at Meacham Airport, we celebrated a family’s deep commitment to Cook Children’s by providing our Teddy Bear Transport team with a new base of operations; augmenting their ability to respond to emergent calls for help from around the region. And we are bringing Cook Children’s services close to home for the families of Southlake, Grapevine and Colleyville with our urgent care and pediatric specialties center now located in Southlake. As for our medical center campus, it is with great anticipation that we look forward to the opening of our new North inpatient tower later this summer. We are eager to unveil the many important family-friendly amenities such as the 106 private single rooms in our neonatal intensive care unit, 26 transitional care and rehabilitation rooms, a new cancer center and heliport. As you read this issue, you’ll also learn about the exciting new Woman’s Board Learning Center that was generously funded to help meet the broad educational needs of our patients and about the wonderful new addition of our Build-A-Bear Workshop® that will no doubt bring comfort and a special new friend to so many of our patients. When you visit our campus, we hope you will recognize that it was designed with our families in mind. One example is our families and patients from our Youth Advisory Council. Their unique insights have helped us to continue to add programs and services to serve our patient families and our community now and for years to come. Of course, none of this could happen without the support of our family of donors. Thank you for sharing our commitment to making our community the best place in the country to raise a child. Sincerely, Rick W. Merrill President and CEO, Cook Children’s Health Care System 2 Children’s Promise | The magazine of Cook Children’s Only the beary best A short, stocky doctor makes his way into a patient’s room at Cook Children’s. His stethoscope hangs from his neck, and his hair is a little unkempt. He is silent in nature, except for the occasional growl. And while not necessarily an expert when it comes to diagnosis, his bedside manner always seems to put a smile on the face of everyone in the room. But if his shortcomings give you “paws,” and you find him a little “unbearable,” forgive him. After all, he’s a stuffed bear. Patients, family, staff and visitors can now make their very own cuddly friend at the Build-A-Bear Workshop®, located at Cook Children’s Medical Center. Of the 400 operating locations around the world, this is the first store that’s located in a hospital setting. In order to make their new friend “beary” special, visitors will go through eight stations. Stations include choosing a stuffed animal “skin,” picking a recordable sound clip, adding extra love by assisting with the stuffing of the animal and creating a name for the new friend. There are bears and other accessories that are exclusive to Cook Children’s, including doctor gear, a bear in a wheelchair and a safety bear. There is also a Cook Children’s signature red wagon. A bear represents much more than a stuffed animal; it is a symbol of love and comfort. It is the “Power of the Paw.” “Power of the Paw” was inspired by the opportunity for furry friends to touch the lives of patients and bring peace through difficult times. Feature “Being able to personalize a bear at our own Build-A-Bear Workshop will allow our patients to work through many feelings related to their illness or injury,” said Jill Koss, director of Family Support Services for Cook Children’s. “Being able to choose their animal, use their own voice to create a message and then have a heart ceremony is a powerful experience for patients and siblings alike.” Along with the comfort provided by the stuffed animal, bringing a Build-A-Bear Workshop to Cook Children’s made financial sense. Each year, more than 3.3 million people enter the doors of the medical center. And, with the recent expansion at Cook Children’s, even more visitors are anticipated. The leadership team at Cook Children’s embarked on a retail assessment plan three years ago. The plan included talking to families, patients, physicians and staff members to learn the types of retail stores they wanted to see in the medical center. The assessment showed a need for more food and drink options, which led to a Starbucks in the medical center. The Starbucks was an immediate success, selling three times the volume expected. To meet the growing need for food items, a Chick-fil-A® will be housed at the expanded medical center. Cook Children’s also has plans for a retail pharmacy within the medical center to help educate families needing medicine for their children and offer the convenience of getting the medication immediately after the prescription. All of these new amenities are designed to make the time spent at Cook Children’s better for families, patients and staff. But in addition to adding more convenience, the leadership team wanted to add more fun! At Cook Children’s, we never forget that we are a pediatric health care organization. One of the stores mentioned throughout the survey was Build-ABear, which also happens to be a favorite of Nancy Cychol, the president of Cook Children’s Medical Center. “The partnership between Cook Children’s and 4 Children’s Promise | The magazine of Cook Children’s Build-A-Bear is a perfect one,” Cychol said. “Build-A-Bear gives kids an experience they will cherish for the rest of their lives. It fits perfectly with our promise to improve the health of children because it takes more than doctors and medication to help kids feel better. We saw the integration of our two organizations as an enhancement to our community, and a fun addition to our medical center.” Over the next couple of years, a relationship developed between Cook Children’s and Build-A-Bear, beginning with Chief Development Bear John Hogan flying from St. Louis to Fort Worth to visit Cook Children’s, learn about its culture and determine if a partnership would be a good idea. Hogan returned home with a glowing report, and the foundation of the relationship was formed. “We are very excited to partner with Cook Children’s in bringing Build-A-Bear Workshop to the medical center,” said Maxine Clark founder and chief executive bear of Build-A-Bear Workshop. “When kids are sick or injured, making a new furry friend is a great way to take their mind off of their treatment and a teddy bear hug can help them feel better. We’re proud that Build-A-Bear Workshop can be one of the ‘pawsitive’ experiences that Cook Children’s offers to the children they help.” While the additions of the new retail shops will enhance a family’s stay, they also serve an important purpose in helping fund Cook Children’s, a not-for-profit organization. All of the stores at the medical center are owned and operated by Cook Children’s. So, each time a coffee is purchased at Starbucks and a private party is held or furry friend is built at Build-A-Bear, that money feeds directly back into Cook Children’s. By adding these and other various stores, Cook Children’s will also create jobs, helping the community from that standpoint. “Traditional health care administrative types probably would not incorporate a Build-A-Bear in the business model,” Stan Davis, vice president of Cook Children’s Facility and Ancillary Services, said. “A retail pharmacy? Sure that makes sense. But a BuildA-Bear doesn’t fit in the normal DNA of a pediatric health care organization. But why not? That’s what I love about Cook Children’s. That’s what we’re about. Let a child be a child. Being sick shouldn’t prevent them from focusing on their childhood and being a kid.” To build a bear or plan a party, call Cook Children’s Build-A-Bear Workshop at 682-885-2327. That’s when they received a phone call from Brandy’s brother, who was watching their little boy, saying Micheal was acting strange. His eyes were blinking irregularly and he was drooling uncontrollably. The Driggars, who live in Purdon, Texas, took their son to an area children’s hospital. For more than a month, Micheal saw several different doctors and neurologists, but they didn’t find any answers. Finally, after a doctor viewed a videotape of one of his seizures, Micheal was admitted into a hospital for monitoring. That night, he had 13 seizures and medication was prescribed to him, but it only made things worse. Doctors increased his dosage, but he continued to have seizures despite taking the maximum amount. Micheal was even saying he wanted to die. By the time he was 8 years old, Micheal’s parents feared for not only their son’s safety, but their own. He was taking knives from the kitchen and climbing to the top of the family’s entertainment center. “We were getting to the point of having to commit him,” Kevin Driggars said. “It was just too dangerous for us and his brothers to be around him.” When he was 12 years old, Micheal burned down an abandoned house and ran away multiple times. He continued to tell his parents he wanted to die. Doctors tried other drugs, but they would only work for a short time before the seizures returned. Micheal would have between five to 10 seizures a day 6 Children’s Promise | The magazine of Cook Children’s and his bouts of anger, strange behavior and fits of violence continued. Feeling she had no choice left, Brandy let Micheal hit her so he could be taken away to a juvenile detention center. At least then, she felt her two younger children would be safe. Micheal’s condition was only getting worse. Finally, their family doctor recommended Cook Children’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Program to the Driggars family. They scheduled an appointment with M. Scott Perry, M.D., a Cook Children’s neurologist and epilepsy specialist. At Cook Children’s, the Driggars felt an immediate connection with Dr. Perry. Dr. Perry helped create a detailed map of Micheal’s brain with 3-D imaging. Only a few children’s hospitals with the most elite pediatric epilepsy programs use 3-D imaging, which gives a unique look at the brain of a child with epilepsy. Dr. Perry leads the 3-D project at Cook Children’s. He works closely with software bio-engineer Joe Paugh to develop these special brain images, allowing neurosurgeons and epileptologists to view the brain like never before. The journey to this special 3-D picture begins with a stay in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, where the patient receives various scans, including a single-photon emission CT (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), CT and MRI. Paugh then merges these scans to develop a detailed brain map, giving the surgical team a view of every angle of the brain. Unlike 2-D imagery, this 3-D model provides more precise location of the abnormal brain tissue that’s causing seizures. This technology can reduce the amount of electrodes used during surgery, allow doctors to see a more precise location of eloquent brain function (i.e., speech or motor function) and ultimately lead to more successful operations. The 3-D image pinpointed the area of seizure origin in Micheal’s brain and showed the region of the brain responsible for speech. For Micheal and his family, the technology gave them hope of ending 10 long years of anguish and fear that included three different stints in a mental hospital. Micheal was a unique case. Years of uncontrolled seizures had made both of his temporal lobes abnormal. The best surgical candidates have only one area of abnormality; Micheal had two. The odds of becoming seizure free decrease when multiple regions are involved. “With all the history of behavior problems and evidence of bilateral temporal lobe abnormalities, Micheal was not the best surgical candidate,” Dr. Perry said. “Removal of one bad temporal lobe does not guarantee that the other damaged temporal lobe will not cause seizures. With 3-D imaging, we were able to show that the left side was the worst side and the true area of seizures onset. We never found a seizure that came from the right side. We also knew the left side of his brain was his dominant hemisphere and where language function resides. After we placed the electrodes on his temporal lobe, I was able to map out where his language was located. We were able to do a detailed surgery that removed the tissue that caused seizures, but stopped short of involving an area responsible for speech.” Micheal before surgery. Without surgery and with the temporal lobe on the left side of Micheal’s brain already bad, Dr. Perry believes that eventually the right temporal lobe would have worsened. Without surgery, Micheal would have had a hard time maintaining a job and probably would not finish school because of missed days due to his psychiatric problems and seizures. His parents feared that Micheal would spend the rest of his life in some type of facility. Weighing their options, including that Micheal’s behavior could become worse, the Driggars family did not hesitate. They felt the risk was worth the possible reward and Micheal made the final decision. “I want the old Micheal back,” he told his parents. With the detailed information from the 3-D image in hand, neurosurgeon David Donahue, M.D., was able to remove the left temporal lobe without harming Micheal’s ability to speak. Sample 3-D image. Since the operation, the old Micheal has returned. He has not had a seizure since the operation and his depression and angry outbursts are gone. “It was like a weight had been lifted off of us,” Brandy said. “For 10 years, Micheal was miserable. All he ever wanted was to be normal. He said, ‘I want to be able to drive one day. I want to do all those things that other kids do. What I thought was amazing was that after our first visit with Dr. Perry, we were in the car on the way home and Micheal said, ‘Mom, I think God sent us to Dr. Perry.’” Nowadays, Micheal shows an interest in art, music and working out. At a recent visit to Cook Children’s, Micheal flexed his bicep, and showed off his recent weight loss. He has a new focus on appearance that he shares with most 15-year-old boys. After receiving deserved compliments for his muscles, Micheal flashed a big grin. Behind Micheal’s smile there’s an experienced and dedicated team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, neuropsychologists, nurses and a software bio-engineer which make up the Cook Children’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Program. “For so long he did not smile - he had one emotion, only anger,” Brandy Driggars said of her son. “Now he has the huge smile on his face, and he laughs a lot.” Micheal after surgery and all smiles again. www.cookchildrens.org | Summer 2011 7 Pace setters Three generations of the Pace family gathered at Meacham International Airport in February to celebrate an honorable moment in their family’s history ~ the unveiling of the new Joe K. Pace Hangar. The hangar, dedicated exclusively to Cook Children’s Teddy Bear Transport’s base operations, helps recognize Pace’s years of dedication, advocacy and support of Cook Children’s. During his lifetime, Joe K. Pace made an incredible mark on Cook Children’s Medical Center. He was a member of the Coordinating Board that facilitated the merger of Cook Children’s and Fort Worth Children’s Hospital. In addition, he led the Challenge for Children Campaign, which raised $28 million for the expansion of the medical center in the early 90s, and was a member of Jewel Charity. Joe served as President of J.C. Pace Holding Co. and Kimbell Inc., and throughout his life he was an avid aviation enthusiast and pilot. Joe’s love of flying came from his father, J.C. Pace Jr., who served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Joe, his brother Gary and Joe’s son, J.C. Pace III, carried on the tradition and also became pilots. According to Joe’s son J.C. III, Joe would always comment whenever he saw the Cook Children’s Teddy Bear Transport team taking off from Meacham Field, “I wonder where they are going and what their mission might be.” So it was with an immense sense of pride when the Pace family came together at Meacham International Airport to celebrate the new Teddy Bear Transport hangar and base of operations, dedicated to Joe K. Pace. The hangar is also special for Cook Children’s. It is the first time that the entire Teddy Bear Transport crew, two ambulances, helicopter and plane are all under one roof. The relationship between Cook Children’s and the Pace family is one that goes back generations, and now it can continue for years to come. Gary Pace said his brother would be very honored to have his name associated with this outstanding facility, and that is especially meaningful to the family as well. 8 Children’s Promise | The magazine of Cook Children’s Even kids can make a difference in the lives of others through the Cook Children’s Peter Pan Birthday Club. This year, Haley and her bunny ambassadors collected a record-breaking 3,265 bunnies and bears, marking an 11-year-total of 22,907 donated stuffed animals. Brooke (left) and Carys (middle) Henry leave their stuffed donations with Haley. Haley, a 16-year-old sophomore at Birdville High School in North Richland Hills, decided she wanted to donate stuffed bunnies for the patients after a visit to Cook Children’s when she was 5 years old. “I thought it was awful that they only gave kids bears at Easter,” she said. “I promised that I would bring in enough bunnies for everyone.” That first year, she collected 1,400 stuffed bunnies with the help of her kindergarten class and members of her church. With the success of her drive, Haley eventually added bears, so that Cook Children’s Prayer Bear Ministry would have stuffed animals to use all year long. “I want people to know that it’s not just me,” Haley said. “I have 39 other students from across the Metroplex helping me.” “She spends most of her time going out and speaking to kids at other schools,” says Haley’s mom Elizabeth. “She even wrote a bunny ambassador training manual for kids who want to participate with her.” Thank you, Haley, for your commitment to giving Cook Children’s patients something to hug and make them feel better. “I want the bunnies and bears to help the kids in the medical center feel comforted and know they are not alone,” Haley said. 10 Children’s Promise | The magazine of Cook Children’s Tradition of giving continues with new learning center The latest in technology and textbooks help shape the young sharp minds at Cook Children’s. No, this isn’t for doctors or nurses in training. It’s for the patients at the medical center. Thanks to Cook Children’s Woman’s Board, the current learning center is being relocated and will now include nearly 1,500 square feet. It will be filled with textbooks and supplies necessary to teach multiple grade levels, as well as laptops with updated software, iPads™ with academically appropriate apps and three desktop computers, including two Mac computers. The space will also be used for regular art activities and music therapy when school is not in session. Cook Children’s Woman’s Board has stepped up to improve the lives of medical center patients by providing $500,000 to relocate the classroom to the family amenities area. This gift is the largest gift ever made by the Woman’s Board to Cook Children’s and it makes a strong statement to their commitment and generosity in supporting our promise. For more than 40 years, the Woman’s Board of Cook Children’s has raised funds to enhance the child-friendly medical center environment. Proceeds from Cards for Kids and the Enchanted Castle Gift Shop have totalled well over $1 million and many of the Woman’s Board members volunteer for both programs, in addition to donating their time to patient care areas. Their generosity has helped Cook Children’s purchase critical medical equipment, including an ambulance, a van to transport homeless children to Cook Children’s neighborhood clinics, a rehab climbing wall and a prayer garden, as well as provide support programs like the Creative Artist in Residence Programme and Save a Smile. “We are excited as we look toward the future in our new building,” said Jan Sordini, M.Ed., Cook Children’s special educator/consultant. “The commitment to education at Cook Children’s is evident by the generous donation and support of the Woman’s Board. The new learning center will make a difference in the lives of our children for many years to come.” The new learning center will be staffed by four full time Fort Worth Independent School District teachers and two assistants. They’ll work with medical center patients in kindergarten through twelfth grade, providing classroom or bedside instruction so the students don’t fall behind their classmates during extended absences from school. Last year, nearly 130 patients were taught by the staff. 11 Kids participate in a variety of fun activities at this year’s Peter Pan Birthday Club party. Each year, Cook Children’s Peter Pan Birthday Club celebrates the goodwill of its members with a birthday bash. This year’s party took place in Cook Children’s atrium March 27. Drizzly weather did not deter party goers who enjoyed face painting, a balloon artist, caricature sketches and a roving magician. More than 100 children and parents enjoyed Dippin’ Dots ice cream and tutti fruity popcorn while celebrating. Peter Pan Birthday Club members forego birthday gifts and instead ask that contributions be made to Cook Children’s. Last year, there were 93 Peter Pan Birthday Club members, 56 of which were new members. Cook Children’s Peter Pan Birthday Club is open to all children and is designed to foster and encourage philanthropy at a young age. The Youth Advisory Council-Patients Advising for Change (YAC-PAC) is a council made up of 22 youth ranging in age from 13 to 18 who have been or are currently Cook Children’s patients. Working with administration, medical center staff and other professionals, YAC-PAC members use their own experiences and perspectives to help us ensure patients and their families receive the care and programs they deserve. The youth participating in the YAC-PAC is a diverse group, including kids with a variety of diseases. To become a member, they are nominated by a Cook Children’s staff member and are chosen based on their leadership qualities, demonstration of responsible behavior, ability to communicate their experience and make recommendations to achieve further excellence in care. 14 Children’s Promise | The magazine of Cook Children’s “I love being a part of the YAC-PAC group,” said YAC-PAC member Grace Woodruff. “It is such a rewarding experience to see how my input affects lives. I am learning different aspects of caring for sick children and their families. The fun, loving and encouraging environment creates such a great place to build character and show compassion for other kids around me.” “YAC-PAC gives me chance to not only help myself by socializing with other teens just like me, but also gives me the opportunity to help other kids in return,” said YAC-PAC member Molly Elam. “It lets me know that just because one thing bad happens to you, doesn’t mean that something good isn’t on its way.” Primarily, the YAC-PAC works to develop and improve patient programs and support Cook Children’s family-centered care environment and Cook Children’s promise to provide quality health care and improve the well-being of children. Its primary goals for 2011 include: • Create a mentor program for patients. • Create a welcome/orientation video for patients to be available on GetWellNetwork®. • Ongoing medical center and community education/ involvement. • Continued involvement in the teen room design for the medical center expansion. The YAC-PAC is led by Cook Children’s Child Life specialist Vicki Kelley with the help of fellow Child Life specialist Julia Smeltzer, Family Support Services Welcome Ambassador Tony Martinez and Michelle Mayeaux, RN. “If we are to provide an environment of caring, collaboration and innovation, who best to help us with that than those we care for—our patients,” said Kelley. “I truly believe that their viewpoints should be a driving force for much of what Cook Children’s does. Because of their patient experiences, they are the experts in what it feels like to be served by Cook Children’s employees. Involving the YACPAC in decision-making, program planning, environmental design and staff development will help us keep our promise to the community.” “YAC-PAC is a way to give back to the medical center and my community,” said YAC-PAC member Austin Thomas Olle. “I enjoy coming back and serving Cook Children’s because the medical center has been here my whole life. YAC-PAC gives me and others a way to support the doctors and patients, while also helping improve the medical center in many ways.” “YAC-PAC has been an amazing learning experience that I wouldn’t change for anything,” said YAC-PAC member Emily Mather. As medical director of the Movement Disorder and Neurorehabilitation program at Cook Children’s, Warren Marks, M.D., has accomplished plenty and is a leader in his field, giving lectures throughout the world. You may be surprised at what makes Dr. Marks beam with pride. It’s the playground on the south lawn of the medical center. The playground shows off the handy work of his son Taylor, who earned his Eagle Scout badge from the Boy Scouts of America by helping design the playground and lead a team to build the retaining wall around it. All of this was before Taylor even stepped foot on the campus of the University of Mississippi as a freshman in August 2010. Dr. Marks first became involved with the Boy Scouts nearly 15 years ago with his older son, Spencer. He is a former scoutmaster for Troop 326 and continues to be involved in the program. Dr. Marks calls the Boy Scouts an unbeatable program that has allowed him to spend time traveling with his sons across the United States and around the world, including Switzerland, Germany, England and Canada. “The Boy Scouts have given me so much time with my children,” Dr. Marks said. “It offers them leadership opportunities and a value-driven lifestyle. It truly impacts the lives of these boys.” Dr. Marks estimates only 4 percent of Scouts earn Eagle Scout and now both of his boys hold the prestigious recognition. The Eagle Scout project is designed to benefit the community, and is usually to help not-for-profits, like Cook Children’s. Spencer earned Eagle Scout for his work with the Fort Worth Zoo. After floating ideas around, Taylor became involved in helping to design a handicap-accessible playground. Taylor worked with a design crew and helped develop the playground. “I liked the idea of working with Cook Children’s because I had been on the original playground before and it was very apparent that there was no way for handicapped children to participate in any of the activities,” Taylor said. “My goal was to design a playground that would be inclusive of their needs.” With the largest expansion project in the medical center’s history under way, it looked as if the playground was only going to be temporary. Dr. Marks said now it seems like it may stay around for a while. “Until they need the south lawn, apparently they are going to leave it as a family playground,” Dr. Marks said. “I’d never seen 16 Children’s Promise | The magazine of Cook Children’s many people on it before they moved it out of the fenced area. Now you see kids on it all the time.” Along with months of planning, the boys, led by Taylor, were responsible for putting up the retaining wall around the playground. They took five retaining walls from the old Fort Worth Children’s Hospital, dismantled them by hand, stacked the rocks on palates, brought the rocks to Cook Children’s and rebuilt the wall. Over the course of two weekends, the boys moved close to 32,000 pounds and 24 pallets of stone. Taylor went through a training session with the landscape people on how to properly lay and level the rock wall. The Eagle Scout’s job is to be the supervisor, while the adults are there to serve as advisors and workers. “It makes me very proud. I watched my son and two dozen other boys get their Eagle Scout while I was Scout Master,” Dr. Marks said. “It’s really important to step back and let him do the job. Anybody who has done this knows it would certainly be a lot faster to let the adults do the project themselves, but that’s not what this is all about. It was nice to give him an appreciation for things that happen where I come to work every day. It was nice to give them all this opportunity to give back to the community.” After the expansion, Cook Children’s will provide more play areas for kids. When it opens later this year, an indoor playground for recreation will connect to an outdoor playground, offering a new basketball court, movie screen, expanded play areas, a play lawn and even a place to play checkers and hopscotch. 20,000 reasons to smile Community partners For four consecutive years, the Children’s Oral Health Coalition (COHC), led by Cook Children’s, has given underserved children a reason to smile by hosting an annual toothbrush drive. This year, 20,000 new toothbrushes were donated by the community during the Drive for a Smile toothbrush drive. The event took place at Cook Children’s South Rehabilitation Clinic on March 4. “We are so thankful for the individuals and organizations who donated toothbrushes,” said Becki Hale, coordinator of the Children’s Oral Health Coalition. “Because tooth decay is the most common infectious disease of children, it is important Pictured: Mansfield Independent School District Parent Teach Association members dropped off a record number of more than 7,200 toothbrushes collected by their school district. that we make sure these children in need receive toothbrushes. For some, this is something they have not had before.” The Children’s Oral Health Coalition is led by Cook Children’s School nurses report that dental pain is a frequent reason children come to the nurse’s office at school. If the dental pain is left untreated, the effects are irreversible, generally become more severe and the cost of treatment increases and may take place in a hospital setting rather than in a less expensive outpatient setting. Toothbrushes are essential to preventing this issue. coalition’s mission is to improve the oral health of underserved “We put toothbrushes and toothpaste, stickers, brushing charts and dental education information into a dental health kit for parents. Members of the Children’s Oral Health Coalition then hand out these dental kits at local health fairs, schools, parent classes and community events,” said Hale. and made up of more than 35 different local organizations. The children in Tarrant County, particularly focusing on children ages birth to third grade. COHC educates and provides dental resources to families with young children in order to instill healthy behavior choices in the children as early as possible. Members of the coalition volunteer in different ways to educate families with proper dental and nutrition information to help prevent tooth decay in children. The COHC has been recognized by the Texas Oral Health Coalition as a model for other communities attempting to address children’s oral health disease. Cook Children’s continues to benefit from the long-standing support of Kohl’s Department stores, which is committed to improve the oral health of underserved children by sponsoring programs such as Save a Smile and the Children’s Oral Health Coalition. www.cookchildrens.org | Summer 2011 17 Partner connections There are many well-known, national companies that partner with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to raise funds benefiting local hospitals like Cook Children’s. Participating in fundraising efforts gives the employees of these companies a chance to make a difference in their community. One such local partnership is with RE/MAX and Cook Children’s. All 47 of the local RE/MAX offices participate in fundraising through Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and all of the proceeds go to Cook Children’s. Since 2009, these local RE/MAX locations have raised $95,129. Often, there is a personal connection that motivates people within these businesses to give back. This is the case with Tracey Amaya, whose first grandson, Ryan, is a Cook Children’s patient. Nine years ago, Tracey’s daughter was going through her first pregnancy. The pregnancy was proceeding as planned until her doctor detected something strange on the sonogram. Unable to make a diagnosis until birth, they learned Ryan had tuberous sclerosis, a rare, multi-system genetic disease that causes nonmalignant tumors to grow in the brain and on other vital organs. Ryan was born with tumors in his brain, heart, kidneys and with marks on his skin. Immediately, doctors determined the tumors in his heart needed to be addressed. Cook Children’s cardiothoracic surgeon Vincent Tam, M.D., performed open heart surgery to remove four of the five tumors on Ryan’s heart when he was just 2 days old. The tumor in his heart valve was the largest anyone had ever seen in that location. After a successful surgery, the attention turned to Ryan’s brain. The tumors in Ryan’s brain were numerous and inoperable. Every Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) doctor and specialist available was involved with Ryan’s care. His care team looked at the tumors in his kidneys and his skin marks and decided to watch and wait. Ryan spent three weeks in the NICU. “We had a big family and a lot of support,” recalled Tracey. “We vowed that Ryan would never be alone so we took shifts and stayed with him. The nurses and doctors were great. They never told us we could not be there and in fact, they would look for open areas where we could sit together.” Once home, Ryan continued to have regular visits with his Cook Children’s doctors. Today, at 9 years old, Ryan has no developmental delays and is thriving. And he now has three younger siblings to play with every day. “Cook Children’s is such an asset to the community,” said Tracey. “Ryan received the best care and is with us today because of the wonderful people at Cook Children’s who took care of him.” Ryan calls Cook Children’s his “palace,” and because of this extremely powerful experience, his family holds a benefit to support Cook Children’s NICU. The family felt blessed to have such a large network of family support. They wanted to help other NICU families who don’t have family close, have come from long distances or who don’t have the financial means to stay with their child in the medical center. Tracey, a RE/MAX agent, has additionally started supporting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals through the RE/MAX partnership. Cook Children’s is grateful for all of the corporations and foundations who partner with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This support helps Cook Children’s to fulfill our promise to improve the health of every child in our region through the prevention and treatment of illness, disease and injury.
