THE NITTY GRITTY CAPE EPIC LIVE The Absa Cape Epic is a UCI-sanctioned event, riders earn points towards world rankings. As such, there are strict rules that the organisers and riders must abide by. Over and above this, there are additional regulations that make the Untamed African race an unfogettable experience that attracts riders from around the world. Spectators and fans of the race can track the Absa Cape Epic LIVE from the comfort of their own home or office. Live rider tracking, finish line feeds, updated leader boards and general race updates are all just a click away. Visit www.cape-epic.com from 15 March 2015 and follow us on social media. RULES AND REGULATIONS STAY UP TO DATE The two-minute rule This is the x-factor that makes the Absa Cape Epic different to any other race: it’s a team race. Team members have to stick together at all times. If riders are caught more than two minutes away from their partner at any stage of the race they will receive a time penalty and may face disqualification. No towing Towing is the practice of attaching two riders bikes together with an elastic cord so that the stronger rider can pull the weaker rider. This is far too dangerous to do on the Absa Cape Epic, but a good teammate sits up front so that his or her partner can slipstream. Blue board riders If a team has a bad day and misses the maximum stage time they can still continue to ride but with a blue number board and they will not be considered official Absa Cape Epic finishers. SUPERSPORT VIEWING TIMES SUPERSPORT LIVE ON TV The Prologue and Grand Finale are broadcast LIVE on SuperSport. Daily highlights are also broadcast each evening of the race so be sure to check Dish Magazine or the interactive DSTV Guide for viewing times and channels. Visit www.cape-epic.com from 15 March 2015 and follow us on social media. #2015AbsaCapeEpic @absacapeepic Up to the minute race updates /capeepic /absacapeepic Get an inside view into the race and Like our page Catch the higlights and special compilations on our YouTube Channel /absacapeepic Experience the Absa Cape Epic on Instagram LEADERS JERSEYS SPECIAL JERSEYS MEN ABSA AFRICAN JERSEY WOMEN EXXARO JERSEY The yellow zebra jersey is worn by the leading team in the Men’s category. Stage times are added up and the team with the lowest cumulative time at the end of each stage gets to wear the iconic jersey the next day. The team in yellow after the full eight days of racing is the overall winner In 2014 the Women’s category prize purse was boosted to equal that of the men, thanks to Sasol’s sponsorship. Since 2012 the top women riders also gained UCI points, which served to sharpen the competition in this category, with 2015 promising to be the most closely contested yet. The striking red Absa African Jersey is awarded to the highest-placed team where both members hold passports from an African country, regardless of their category. The competition for this special jersey becomes more intense every year. The overall winners of the Absa African jersey are awarded the Burry Stander Memorial Trophy. The Exxaro Jersey is awarded to the top historically disadvantaged South African team where both riders are under the ages of 26. The Exxaro MTB Academy was created to increase access to the sport for previously disadvantaged South Africans. In recent years the number if competitors for this jersey has mushroomed. OTHER JERSEYS MASTERS The race for the blue Masters’ category jersey has become nearly as fierce as that for the overall victory. Both team members in this category must be between the ages of 40 and 49 years. Every year there are riders in the field who are entitled to wear the distinctive rainbow jerseys - white with green, yellow, black, red and blue stripes across the chest. These are reigning world champions in any of the cycling disciplines. A world champion must wear the jersey when competing in the same discipline for which the title was won. GRAND MASTERS SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMPION MIXED OUTCAST JERSEY The distinctive purple jersey was introduced in 2013 and has proved to be highly competitive, with several teams vying for the top spot. To compete in this category both team members must be over 50 years of age. The male/female combination adds a different dynamic to racing the Absa Cape Epic, and the race for the dark green jerseys has proved to be fiercely contested. As in the other categories, communication and understanding your partner’s strengths and weaknesses is critical to success in the mixed race. 6 WORLD CHAMPION The South African champions’ jerseys have green and gold stripes across the chest. Reigning South African champions in each of the respective cycling disciplines wear them when competing. This jersey only applies to UCI registered riders if their partner drops out. It helps other riders identify them. Outcast riders may not assist other riders or interfere with the outcome of the race. GRAND FINALE 22 March 2015 This year, for the first time ever, the Grand Finale will be held at Meerendal Wine Estate (previously the Prologue venue). The last stage of the Absa Cape Epic finishes like it starts, with a bang. The beautiful Meerndal Wine Estate in Durbanville hosts this prestigious event in 2015. Not only is it a fitting end to eight incredibly tough days of competiton and comaraderie for the riders, but also your chance to witness the final battle between the world’s best mountain bikers as they race for final honours. Bring along family and friends to welcome these brave athletes home as they they recognise their dreams of becoming official Absa Cape Epic finishers. It promises to be a day of adventure as riders fight it out on the spectaular singletrack on the estate – accompanied by great food, fine wine and live entertainment in a truly superb setting. Hospitality packages are available for the day, please contact Lena ([email protected]) for more information. 2015 ABSA CAPE EPIC SPECTATOR GUIDE 7 PROLOGUE SUNDAY 15 March 2015 V&A WATERFRONT UCT, Cape Town – 20km The Prologue is the team time trail that determines starting positons for Stage 1.
