Industry 4.0 is only one aspect of a changing industrial landscape. Evolving applications like e-bikes and power
tools raise the demand for highly efficient and reliable parts.
At the same time, industrial designers face the challenge of creating motor-control platform designs that
combine the flexibility to adapt quickly to different types of motors with the high accuracy needed to
guarantee performance in the most rugged systems.
To meet these new requirements, companies and hardware engineers need to adapt and develop their
designs, products, and processes. Motor-control devices need to become progressively smaller and more
efficient, to support the industrial transfer to a real Industry 4.0. NXP supports these trends by securing the
interfaces, increasing the flexibility and design speed of the control stage, and reducing the size of the power
stage while also increasing its power density.

NXP supplies thyristors (silicon-controlled
rectifiers, triacs, AC thyristors, and AC thyristor
triacs), power diodes, and high-voltage
transistors for a wide range of applications,
including white goods, industrial, automation,
SMPS, and lighting. Our entire thyristor
portfolio utilizes NXP’s unique glass-free planar
passivation technology to give unrivalled
voltage ruggedness and high temperature
stability. This eliminates the unpredictable

Not all power MOSFETs are the same. NXP
power MOSFETs are designed and built
differently. Based on a unique copper-clip
construction, NXP’s LFPAK56 packages are
designed to share current and spread heat
evenly over the die, while LFPAK33 packages
provide the benchmark performance in a lowresistance small-footprint package. Our D2PAK
and TO220 packages have enhancements, such
as thicker bond wires and multiple stitches,
combined with inherently robust silicon to
deliver low on-state resistance and high
current-carrying capability within an industry
standard footprint.

Brushed motors are a well-established technology for power tools, cordless home
appliances, and electronic toys.
Application areas
 P
ower tools encompass everything from small
screwdrivers to heavy-duty saws and garden
equipment, while home appliances range from
handheld food mixers to cordless vacuum
cleaners
 T
hese applications present a wide variety of
requirements for driving the motor, but they
all need high current capability and the ability
to withstand stall conditions and other kinds
of abuse

Brushless DC
Brushless DC (BLDC) refers specifically to a group of motors where the supply to the
windings is switched by MOSFETs rather than by a commutator.
Key features and benefits
 B
LDC motors are compact and powerful
 T
hey can be designed to run at very high
speed and power or to provide high torque at
low RPM
 T
he absence of brushes gives them long life
and high reliability
 E
liminating friction from the brushes makes
them efficient
 R
elatively simple electronics are required and
can easily incorporate speed control
LFPAK devices are recommended for high volume consumer goods requiring a
compact, yet powerful motor with high level of automated assembly.
Application areas
 BLDC ‘outrunner’ motors have their rotors on
the outside and the winding in the middle.
This gives them plenty of low-speed torque
and they are ideal for e-bikes, scooters and
quadra-copters
 PCB mounted MOSFETs simplify heatsinking and facilitates highly automated
manufacturing and test
 LFPAK devices set the benchmark for a
low-resistance, small-footprint package
NXP’s LFPAK56 portfolio gives industry-leading performance in a truly
innovative package. 100% compatible with industry-standard Power-SO8
footprints, the copper source clip shares the current over the die while at the
same time spreading the heat evenly among the cells. The LFPAK56’s exposed
leads offer extra benefits in terms of increased reliability and the option of wave
soldering and automatic optical inspection.

Permanent-magnet synchronous m otors
Driven by sinusoidal waveforms, the stator has a distributed winding to generate sinusoidal
back-EMF. Powerful microprocessors enable operation without position feedback.
Key features and benefits
 Ideal for high-performance servo applications
 A close relative of the BLDC motor
 Controlled with synthesized sinusoidal
waveforms
 Smooth rotation without torque ripple
 Smaller, lighter, and more efficient than an
AC induction motor
PMSM motors are commonly used in industrial automation for traction, robotics, and
aerospace, where greater processor power is required.
Application areas
 These motors are popular as traction motors
in electric and hybrid vehicles
 An emerging application is in direct-drive
washing machines
 Smooth rotation makes them suitable for
automotive electric power steering
 When fitted with position encoders, they are
ideal for machining tools
 Absence of torque ripple makes them good
for disc-drive data storage

Induction motors
Induction motors are designed to work with three-phase AC motors.
Their rotors are usually cast from aluminium.
Key features and benefits
 Induction motors are the workhorse of
industry
 Low-voltage versions have applications in
battery-powered vehicles
 They require a synthesized 3-phase AC
waveform and have a stator winding similar
to PMSM motors
 They do not have permanent magnets but
rather induce a magnetic field in the rotor by
transformer action
Induction motors are well-established in industrial applications.
They are the motor of choice in rugged, hard-working conditions.
The D2PAK portfolio is well suited to heavy-duty motor-control applications.
NXP’s devices, with their inherently robust silicon and a large Safe Operating
Area (SOA), deliver low on-state resistance and excellent thermal performance
within an industry-standard footprint.

Over the last few years, manufacturers have
moved from DC control systems to AC. These
systems offer several advantages:
 The AC motor can be made much smaller than
its equivalent DC counterpart
 The motors don’t have any parts to wear out
 The motor uses regenerative braking, which
prevents the brake pads from wearing out as
quickly
 Kinetic energy is used to recharge the battery
 The increased efficiency increases the shift
time per battery charge by as much as 25%

Stepper motors
With a stepper motor, a full revolution is divided into a number of equal steps. The
motor’s position can be commanded to move and hold at one of these steps without a
feedback sensor.
Key features and benefits
 Stepper motors are attractive because they
can be controlled directly by microcontrollers
 Step angles range from 1.8° to 90°
 Torques vary from a few uNm for instrument
pointer motors to 40 Nm for machine-tool
motors
Stepper motors are frequently used for precision positioning in equipment such as
disc drives and computer printers.
In light of ever-increasing pressure to reduce the size of modules while at the
same time increasing module functionality, LFPAK33 provides the benchmark
in a low-resistance, small-footprint package. The LFPAK33 brings NXP’s robust
and reliable copper-clip technology to the DFN/QFN3333 footprint.

Brushed DC motors
Brushed DC motors are sometimes used for high speed and torque from a small form
factor. The schematic shows a triac speed controller for a hand blender.
Key features and benefits
 Brushed DC (DC permanent magnet)
motors provide high speed and
torque from a small package
 Field (stator) magnetic field is
produced by magnets
 Armature (rotor) magnetic field is
produced by electrical current
 They are compatible with DC supplies
only. On AC supplies a bridge rectifier
must be used
 Speed is easy to control inexpensively
by average supply voltage
 A triac phase-control circuit allows
economical solid-state control of motor
speed
Rectifier-fed DC loads present the toughest commutation conditions for the
triac and demand the best Hi-Com triacs.

Single-phase AC induction motors
Induction motors are used where low speed, high power and long life are desirable.
