Senior Men’s Golf News
Early January was just too cold to play much golf. Only the usual
fanatics from over in Pamlico Plantation even thought of playing.
We won’t mention any names, but we all know who they are. The
rest are waiting for 50 and 60 degree days to venture outdoors. Can
we really blame them?
Our Spring breakfast meeting is coming up soon and captains for
the Coastal Plains and Northeastern Seniors teams are organizing
schedules for 2015. New players are welcome for both teams so
please check with the Pro Shop, Paul Klein or Rick Kamman to be
added to one or both teams.
Play day captains, Mark Tomlinson, Rick Kamman and Kevin
Dennehey are busy scheduling new games this year. We’re all
looking forward to some new and exciting challenges as well as lots
of winnings from the A-Team. Thanks again to older....FORMER
captains, Robbie Cameron, Speedy Dave McLawhorn and Launch
Larson for their efforts last year! Oh, don’t forget to pay your 2015
dues to treasurer, Richard Cooper!! See you all when it gets warm.
From the Grounds
Cold and wet air has stuck around this year to give us your typical
North Carolina winter. The rain delayed us a bit on the course but
has not slowed us down from the small projects that groom this
property into a beautiful Golf Course. We like to take advantage of
bad weather by servicing equipment, some touch up painting, work
on our building or any other small construction projects.
If you are planning to clean up your home lawn this year now is
the time to begin. Two commonly used signs in the turf industry is
to start pre-emergent after the Forsythia bushes bloom but before
your Dogwood trees bloom. This is useful because it shows you
the relative air/soil temperatures and the amount of sun light per
day. The month of February is generally the time of year that Turf
Professionals plan on sitting on a sprayer.
While Bentgrass does continue to grow in the cool weather it is very
slow so it will take much longer for old cup holes and ball marks to
disappear. You may notice that we may only change cups and mow
every other day and the best way for golfers to help us is to fix ball
marks. Studies have shown that it only takes 15 seconds to properly
fix a ball mark, 24 hours for that mark to grow over and 15 days for
ans untouched mark to heal. I hope that everyone stays warm for the
remainder of the winter and I look forward to seeing you all on the
course. Thanks, Patrick Conner

Golf Rule Book Changes for Seniors
RULE 1.a. A ball sliced or hooked into the rough shall be lifted
and placed on the fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried
or rolled into the rough with no penalty. The senior should not be
penalized for uncontrollable mechanical phenomena.
RULE 2.d.6(b) A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit
the tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific
game. The player must estimate the distance the ball would have
traveled if it had not hit the tree and play the ball from there.
RULE 3.b.3(g) There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The
missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found
and pocketed by someone else, making it a stolen ball. The player
is not to compound the felony by charging him or herself with a
penalty.
RULE 4. (7a) If a putt passes over a hole without dropping, it is
deemed to have dropped. The law of gravity supersedes the law of
golf.
RULE 5. Putts that stop close enough to the cup that they could be
blown in, may be blown in. This does not apply to balls more than
three inches from the hole. No one wants to make a travesty of the
game.
RULE 6.a.9(k) There is no penalty for so-called “out of bounds.” If
penny-pinching golf club owners bought sufficient land, this would
not occur. The golfer deserves an apology, not a penalty.
RULE 7.g.15(z) There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard,
as golf balls should float. That they do not is a technical problem
that manufacturers have to correct. Senior Golfers should not be
punished for manufacturer’s shortcomings.
RULE 8.d.19(q) There is no penalty for a ball going into a canyon
on desert courses. This is a technical problem and when the golf
manufactures retire they will correct this manufacturing defect.
RULE 9.k.9(s) Advertisements claim that golf scores can be
improved by purchasing new clubs, balls, shoes etc. Since this is
financially impractical for the average Senior Golfer, a stroke per
hole may be subtracted for using old equipment.
Please advise all your senior friends of these important rule changes.
Carry a copy with you at all times so as to easily up-date your nonsenior golfing partners, opponents, and families.

special events, boating education programs, and to “buddy up” on
cruises. Be sure to “friend” us on our WYC Facebook page to stay
informed of our activities.

Mike Humphries is our 2015 Commodore. He and his wife, Judy,
have a 42 ft Pearson sailboat - Kyrenia - on A dock. Mike is a
project manager at PCS in Aurora and Judy is patient navigator at
the Shepard Cancer Center in Washington. They have two sons Eric, who lives in Spartanburg SC, and Jason, who lives in Raleigh.
Mike enjoys a full tilt, “heeled over” sailing in a stiff wind and
would welcome you to join him! Judy prefers a more gentle sail or
