Guidance Zone
Applications for Eastland community
scholarships will be available for seniors in
February. All seniors are encouraged to
complete the forms --- any senior who is going
to attend a college/university/community
college/or technical school in the fall 2015
is eligible to apply. Completed applications
must be turned in to the Mrs. Pilgrim by
February 27, 2015. Late applications will not
be accepted.
There are many other scholarships available
on Mrs. Pilgrim’s Scholarship webpage:

scholarships/. If your son/daughter hasn’t yet
applied for any, encourage him/her to do so.
Scholarships are a great opportunity to save
hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars
on college costs.
If your student is planning on attending
college next year, now is also the time to fill
out the FAFSA form. This is a FREE Application
for Federal & State Aid. Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov
for the form as well as all the information you
will need to know before completing the form.
Aim to have your FAFSA completed by early
February. Every year the state of IL runs out
of money earlier! Even if you don’t think you’ll
qualify, you will still need to fill this out for Work
Study programs and loans. I am happy to help
you with this process – just send me an email
or give me a call.
Lastly, if you haven’t done so already,
please go to Eastland’s website and take the
Illinois 5Essentials Survey. The survey is
open until March 13th and our school uses this
information for our future school improvement
plans. Show your support for Eastland schools
and let your voices be heard!
Sincerely,
Anne Pilgrim
Jr./Sr. High School Counselor

First Grade News
The month of January has brought cold to
Eastland Elementary. The first grade students
read the book Recess at 20 Below, which is set in
Alaska and they go outside still at that freezing
temperature. However, here in Illinois we keep
the students inside to stay warm and wrote a
book titled Recess at Zero Degrees. Here are
the activities that the students enjoy inside on a
freezing day.
Wil Johnson – When it is really cold out, we
have recess inside. I sort out football cards. The
football cards had all the teams.
Kaya VanMetre – When it is really cold out.
We have recess inside. I play with Legos. I
made a spaceship.
Owen Miller – When it is really cold out, we
have recess inside. I play Chutes and Ladders.
It is really fun!
Orion Lower – When it is zero degrees, we
stay inside. I like to build. I make a train track
with cubes.
Zyacn Haverland – When it is zero degrees,
we stay inside, I like to play cars. Mater defeats
the bad guys.
Violet Diehl – When it is zero degrees, we stay
inside. I like to play with J’Adore. We draw with
stencils.

PARCC Tests
3rd-6th Grade will be tested

Please plan any appointments, etc., in the
afternoons around these 2 weeks. All students
will be taking tests in the morning hours.
Attendance is a requirement for state testing.

We all know test results are important. They
are important because they help us measure the
impact of our instruction. To encourage kids to
do their best on a test, we can ...
– encourage a positive attitude: It may be
tough, but you can do it!
– be sure they eat a good breakfast. Kids think
on a full stomach.

How To Build A
Snowman
The Third grade classes wrote “Snow”
many snowman stories in January.
By Bruce Schlueter
Here is how to build the coolest snowman
ever. First, you make three balls. One large,
one medium and one small. Then, you can
get some buttons for the stomach and the
eyes. Next, you get a Packers scarf and
Mittens and put on him. Finally, you put a
Packers hat on him, but never forget to put a
carrot for a nose! There you go guys, hope
your snowman looks good!
By Kennidee Bryant
Here is how to build the coolest snowman
ever! First, you roll three balls of snow. One
large snowball, one medium snowball, and
one small snowball. Then, you use mints for
the eyes and buttons for the mouth and of
course a carrot for the nose. Next, you can
put ear muffs, a scarf or anything you want. Finally, you put stick arms on your snowman
and you’re done! So that’s how to build the
best, coolest snowman ever!
By Kennedy Burkholder
Here is how to build the coolest and best
snowman! First, you make three snowballs
and stack them up biggest to littlest. Then,
you put the buttons, carrot nose, and the
nose. Next, you put the mittens on the
snowman’s arms. Finally, you put the hat on
the snowman’s head. That is how to make the
coolest snowman ever!
By Carter Blevins
Do you want to know how to build the
coolest snowman eve! First, take three
snowballs. Then, put them biggest to smallest. Next, put two stick arms and put the stick
arms on the middle snowball. Finally, put a
carrot nose on and four buttons for the mouth
and put on a hat. This is how you make the
coolest snowman ever.
By Adrian Martz
Here is how to build the fastest, funniest,
most handsome snowman. First, you take
a small, medium and large snowball. Put
the small on top, large on the bottom and
medium in the middle. Then, put a carrot
nose, pebble mouth and eyes. Next, put ear
muffs on him and coal freckles. Finally, put a
gold hat and stick arms on him and put a scarf
on the coolest snowman ever! And then keep
building him every winter.
By Maxwell Pasch
Here is how to build the most awesome,
most Sea Hawk looking, super cool snowman
ever! First, you get three snow balls and
stack them up. Then, you put a Seattle Sea
Hawk jersey on it. (Any player) Next, put
on pennies for the eyes then a carrot nose
and a fake Seahawks helmet on his head. (If
you have one) Finally, put on stick arms and
gloves one with glue and put a football on
the one with glue. It will be awesome! GO
SEAHAWKS!
