Canada’s nearly 10 million square kilometres
of land and territorial water are divided into six
Canadian Armed Forces regional commands,
allowing for each region to better respond to
its unique needs when supporting domestic
operations.
Similarly, in his role as the Joint Forces Air
Component Commander, the 1 Canadian Air Division (1 CAD) commander relies on a network
of liaison staff, called Air Component Command
Elements (ACCE), to advise and support their
regional commander to meet their specific
needs for air power.
For the Atlantic region, the role to ensure
the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) provides
responsive and task-tailored air support belongs
to Colonel Pat Thauberger.
“As an extension of 1 CAD, the ACCE is the
liaison and subject matter expert on the employment of air power to the Regional Joint Task
Force Commander, and can act as go-between
to coordinate regional RCAF efforts,” Thauberger says. “In the specific context of the Atlantic
region, we support Rear-Admiral John Newton,
(Joint Task Force) Atlantic Commander, in his
four separate and distinct roles.

Special Olympics Nova Scotia is
bringing the Provincial Winter Games to
Aldershot and Kentville on the weekend
of February 20, with athletes coming
together to compete from across the
province.
The games volunteer opportunities
will begin February 20 at noon at CFB
Aldershot and will continue until the
afternoon of February 22.
Over the weekend, the following locations will be used: Aldershot camp facilities (opening ceremonies, snowshoeing,
floor hockey, victory dance, and meals
and accommodations) and Aldershot
elementary, the Glooscap Curling Club,
Ski Martock and the Kings Mutual
Century Centre in Berwick; for sports
including floor hockey, cross country
skiing, curling, snowshoe, speed skating
and figure skating.
Special Olympics organizers are looking for volunteers in areas such as meals
and food distribution, at the various
competitions as marshals, timers, scorekeepers and medical; athlete check-in

14 Wing Greenwood families took advantage of a
great winter afternoon January 30 to play outdoors,
gathering at the Stronach Park skating pond and
trail for Take The Roof Off Winter events organized
by the 14 Wing Greenwood Community Centre and
the Military Family Resource Centre. Games, skating, a BBQ and more meant rosy cheeks for all!

unique challenges to Thauberger and his staff.
“The region itself is arguably the most diverse and
dynamic of our regions, comprising the four Atlantic Provinces, and parts of Nunavut
and Quebec,” he says. “This
search and rescue region has
the greatest combination of
volume and complexity, and
most people would be amazed
at the sheer volume of marine
activity operating in and transiting through every day.
“Beyond the number of
roles encompassed by the
commander, the size of the
headquarters is significant,”
continues Thauberger. “While
it is clearly a very Navy-focussed HQ, we work with
the HQ element of 5 Division
and the Regional Joint Task
Force. On the RCAF side, with
the four operational wings
and a detached squadron
in our region, we are kept
busy supporting the multiple
operational and exercise missions on a daily basis.”
Thauberger, a veteran air
navigator and now an air
combat system officer of the
CP140 Aurora community,
has held command positions
with 404, 405 and 415 squadrons in Greenwood; with the
Directorate of Air Strategic
Plans and the Strategic Joint
Staff in Ottawa; and deployed
on Operations Sharp Guard,
Apollo and Athena. His recent appointment as officer
in charge of ACCE (Atlantic)
provides him with a new perspective on air power.
“This is my first posting
in the operational level of
command,” he says. “Fortunately, we have some very
experienced and talented
officers and NCMs that keep
the operation humming along.
“The biggest thing I have
taken away is that true ‘joint’
operations are developed and
take place at the operational
level – it’s where the magic
happens! I have immensely
enjoyed increasing our engagement and integration
into the Navy’s operational
planning, and working with
my staff to ‘man the phones’
to make the operations happen, whether it be with the
wings, 1 CAD, Canadian Joint
Operations Command, or our
international partners.”

Formed in 1968, the Logistics branch now employs
almost 400 members within
14 Wing Greenwood’s force.

mobile support equipment
operators. Officers within
the branch are all logistics
officers who specialize in
finance, human resources,
supply, foods or transport;
many of them have dual
specialities.

There have been numerous accounts and concerns
of high risk driving areas
reported at 14 Wing Greenwood. Remember to always
be on alert, as mishaps can
occur in the blink of an eye.
Always use caution while
proceeding through parking
lots and unmarked areas.
In the parking lot on the
east side of Hangar 10, there
have been numerous close
calls between vehicles which
drive over the marked yellow
lines that state “No parking.”
This parking lot is marked
off, as it runs parallel with
Tusker Lane. When drivers do
not take the time to proceed
to the marked in/ out routes,
they cross over the “No parking” lines, putting themselves
and others traveling on Tusker Lane in danger. You won’t
get a good line of sight with
vehicles parked on both sides
of your vehicle. Everyone
must be sure they’re using
the proper in/ out routes and
use extreme caution in all
parking lots.
In the northeast corner
of the Hangar 5 parking lot,
there are three entrance ways

passed away peacefully
Thursday, January 29, 2015,
in the Soldiers Memorial
Hospital, Middleton. Born in
Truro, NS he was the son of the
late Charles and Ruth (Ayling)
Campbell. He is survived by his
wife of 55 years, Jessie (Fillier)
of Greenwood; sons, Robert
(Jo-Anne), Orillia, ON; John (Vickie), Lakeville, NS;
Dennis (Ann), Bridgetown, NS; daughter Deborah
(Peter), Amherst, NS; grandchildren, Christopher,
David, Michelle, Caleb, Heather, Alicia, Michael, and
Alex; great-grandsons, Noah, Aiden, Ethan, Gavin,
and Eric; brothers, Bill (Judy), Carstairs, AB; Horace,
Yukon; sister, Barb (Abe) Kroeger, Saskatoon, SK.
Predeceased by sister, Maria (David) Murphy, Cooking
Lake, AB. Jack was a member of the RCAF for 32
years and retired in 1985 in Greenwood. He was an
avid hockey fan and spent many hours in the rink with
his sons to cheering for his favorite team on TV. Jack
enjoyed gardening, travelling in his latest RV, spending
time with the grandchildren, and the many walks with
his wife. Visitation was held 2 – 4 p.m, and 6 – 8
p.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the Middleton
Funeral Home Ltd. Funeral service was held 2 p.m.
Wednesday, February 4, 2015 in Holy Trinity Anglican
Church of Canada, Middleton, Reverend Paul Jennings
officiated and a reception followed. Burial was held
at the Holy Trinity Cemetery after the service. Jack
would appreciate any consideration of donations to the
Holy Trinity Anglican Church of Canada or a charity
of your choice. The family wish to thank the staff
of the Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Valley Regional

Carnival events
focus on families
Get set for some old fashioned fun – and we mean
ancient – at the 14 Wing
Greenwood Winter Carnival.
This year’s events get underway February 13, with the
annual kick-off pep rally at
the Annapolis Mess. 14 Wing
squadrons and branches in
six teams, all themed around
Ancient Civilizations, will be
attempting to set the tone for
all things Greek, Roman, Viking, Egyptian and others, all
representing ancient peoples
and cultures from history.
“Yes, Winter Carnival is
competitive, with all the
events and points up for
grabs,” says carnival committee co-chairman Captain
Brian LeBreton. “But I’ve
been really impressed with
all the different ideas that
have come to the committee from the volunteers,
who are working off each
other’s energy as we have
been planning for this. You
can tell everyone is really
working hard to make this a
great winter carnival.”
LeBreton says the favourites – hockey, curling, the
pool relays and Mess leisure
games – are all back on this
year’s schedule, but he’s
also looking forward to seeing newer events unfold in
the next couple of weeks.
“The float decorating contest at the pep rally: it’s great
to see what happens when
you let people’s imaginations run wild. We’ve got
ball hockey – for adults
and kids, and that’s always
enjoyable. And what would
be a Winter Carnival without
beavertails?!”
This year, as Friday, February 20 events bring team
participants and supporters
to the Fitness & Sports Cen-
tre, food trucks will be set up
in the parking lot with fresh
beavertails and toppings and
sausages on a bun. Bring a
few dollars for a treat, and
a chance to have a sociable
noon lunch with co-workers
and friends. The food trucks
will be back again Saturday,
February 21 during the day’s
family events.
Those Saturday events
are also new to this year’s
schedule, a direct response
to Wing Commander Colonel
Iain Huddleston’s interest in
seeing personnel’s families
come out for the fun – and
the camaraderie of being
among friends.
“Winter Carnival is about
coming together, and the
current deployment is affecting the wing, and 405
Squadron in particular – not
just personnel, but their families,” says carnival committee co-chair Captain David
Penney. “We’re really inviting those families to come
and be a part of events.”
LeBreton agrees; and,
while the week’s events are
designed for fun, families,
and coming together as a
community, the week ends
with the adult-oriented – and
popular! – team lip sync
challenge Saturday evening
at the Annapolis Mess.

The February 13 Winter Carnival pep rally is an important event: it gets
everyone in the spirit for the “friendly” competitions quickly approaching,
with the full Winter Carnival week February 17 to 21. This year’s carnival
theme is ”Ancient Civilizations.”
Plans have been excitedly underway for the rally, and this is a great
opportunity to get out and support your team! Attendees are encouraged
to dress in costume to represent and support their teams. Points will be
awarded towards the overall Winter Carnival competition.
The Leadership Challenge includes “Ancient Civilization Quest Games:”
six challenges, with a set amount of time for our commanding officers and
their chief warrant officers to complete them all, while going head-to-head
against the other teams’ command teams.
Come out and get involved in the pep rally, starting off Winter Carnival
2015’s fun. We will also be selling 50/ 50 tickets, and you will be able to
purchase your carnival key chains for $10. There will be a free safe ride
home program available for participants following the dance.

Le pep rally du carnaval d’hiver du 13 février est un évènement important,
car il permet de mettre tout le monde dans l’esprit des compétitions amicales
qui approchent à grands pas, à l’occasion du carnaval d’hiver qui se tiendra
pendant toute la semaine du 17 au 21 février. Cette année, le carnaval est
placé sous le thème « Civilisations anciennes ».
Les plans vont bon train pour le pep rally, et c’est une excellente occasion
de venir supporter votre équipe! Nous encourageons les participants à se
déguiser afin de représenter et de soutenir leur équipe. On attribuera des
points, qui compteront pour la compétition générale du carnaval d’hiver.
Le concours de leadership comprend le jeu « Quête des civilisations
anciennes » : six épreuves que nos commandants et leurs adjudants-chefs
doivent terminer dans le laps de temps prévu, tout en se mesurant à d’autres

Les activités du carnaval
mettent l’accent sur les
familles
Préparez-vous à avoir du plaisir
comme au bon vieux temps – c’està-dire à l’ancienne – lors du carnaval
d’hiver de la 14e Escadre Greenwood.
Les activités de cette année démarrent le 13 février par le lancement annuel du pep rally au mess Annapolis.
Les escadrons et branches de la 14e
Escadre, répartis en six équipes sous
le thème des civilisations anciennes,
tenteront de donner le ton pour
tout ce qui a trait aux civilisations
grecque, romaine, viking, égyptienne
et autres, qui représentent toutes des
peuples et des cultures anciennes de
l’histoire.
« Oui, le carnaval d’hiver est un
événement compétitif, avec toutes les
activités et les points à rafler. Mais j’ai
été vraiment impressionné par toutes
les différentes idées que le Comité
a reçues de la part des bénévoles,
qui travaillent ensemble pendant les
préparatifs. On peut dire que tout le
monde travaille vraiment dur pour
offrir un grand carnaval d’hiver »,
affirme le capitaine Brian LeBreton,
coprésident du Comité du carnaval
d’hiver.
LeBreton dit que les favoris –
hockey, curling, l’épreuve de relais
(natation) et les jeux de loisirs du
mess – ont tous été reconduits au
programme de cette année, mais
espère voir de nouvelles activités se
dérouler au cours des prochaines
semaines.
« Le concours de décoration
d’objets flottants lors du pep rally : c’est formidable de voir ce qui se
produit lorsqu’on permet aux gens de
laisser libre cours à leur imagination.
Nous avons le hockey-balle – pour
adultes et enfants, une activité qui a
toujours été agréable. Et que serait
un carnaval d’hiver sans queues de
castor? »
Cette année, étant donné que les
activités du vendredi 20 février se tiendront au Centre de conditionnement
physique et de sports, des camions
de restauration seront installés dans
le parc de stationnement pour offrir
aux participants et aux supporters
des queues de castor fraîches ainsi
que des saucisses sur petit pain
avec garnitures. Apportez quelques
dollars pour vous acheter un petit
cadeau et pour apprécier le repas
du midi avec vos collègues et amis.
Le camion de restauration reviendra
samedi le 21 février lors des activités
de la journée de la famille.
Ces activités du samedi ont été
ajoutées au calendrier de cette année, en réponse directe au désir du
commandant de l’escadre, le colonel
Iain Huddleston, de voir les familles
des militaires venir célébrer – et de
constater la camaraderie entre amis.
« Le carnaval d’hiver se veut une
occasion de rassemblement, et le
déploiement actuel touche l’escadre
en général, et le 405e Escadron en
particulier – pas seulement le personnel, mais aussi leurs familles.
Nous invitons vraiment ces familles
à venir participer aux activités », dit
le coprésident du comité du carnaval
d’hiver, le capitaine David Penney.
LeBreton est du même avis. Les
activités de la semaine sont destinées
à l’amusement, aux familles et au
renforcement communautaire. Ainsi,
la semaine s’achève par un concours
de synchronisation labiale (lip-sync)
populaire pour adultes, qui se tiendra
le samedi soir au mess Annapolis.

set for Canada Games
From February 13 to March 1, Prince George
and Northern British Columbia will play host
to 2,400 athletes, 1,000 coaches and officials,
up to 4,500 volunteers, hundreds of media and
thousands of visitors. Athletes and supporters across Nova Scotia are getting their bags
packed to compete.
Highlighting the Berwick area representation is curler Jennifer Smith, the mate on the
women’s curling team. This team just won
its second straight girls’ junior championship
in December and competed at their second
Canadian Juniors in Corner Brook in January.
Figure skater Alexandre Robert from Kingston, along with Cheryle Gaston-McMullen of
Middleton, as the provincial skating team’s
manager; are both attending the Games.
Robert was in Ontario in December as a prenovice skater at the Skate Canada Challenge
Championships.
The men’s hockey team includes Valley
Midget Wildcat Cole Rafuse of Kingston.
There are five locals on the squash team,
including Berwick’s Brianna Hamilton as an
alternate, two from Kentville - Douglas and
Taylor Kosciukiewicz, Nick Sangster from
Hantsport and coach Janet MacLeod from
New Minas.
Ceilidh McGean is an alternate from Kingston
on the trampoline team.

Book Giving Day.
International Book Giving Day is celebrated world-wide February 14 each
year. The goal is to get books into the
hands of as many children as possible,
including teens and adults. People are
encouraged worldwide to give a book
to someone: leave a book in a waiting
room for children to read, or donate
a gently used book to a local library,
hospital or shelter; or to an organization
that distributes used books to children
in need internationally.
During the week of February 9 to 14,
Valley branch libraries will be hiding
wrapped gift books in the community.
Whoever finds the book gets to keep
it - or share it with a friend. Donated,
gently used books are used as the
give-aways. Look for pictures of the
hidden books on Facebook, Twitter and
the AVRL website. If you find a book,
use the #giveabook hashtag to let the

Cadets on course at NS biathlon event
Sixty of Nova Scotia’s best
Cadet biathletes took to the
biathlon range at Ski Martock,
Windsor, in search of provincial gold January 24 to 26.
The competition, which
brought together the top
qualifiers from the various
Cadet biathlon zone championships conducted in late
2014, pitted youth ages 12 to
18, members of the Canadian
Cadet Organization, of various age categories; against
one another in two classic
biathlon races: the sprint and
the pursuit.
The Nova Scotia Cadet
Biathlon Championship was
run alongside Biathlon Nova
Scotia’s provincial championships.
In addition to competitors,
approximately 15 Cadets assisted with running the event
through officiating and other
event coordination tasks.
Top male and female teams
will move on to represent
Nova Scotia at the Regional
Cadet Biathlon Championships February 28 to March
1 at Ski Martock.

Meet Middleton’s 2015 Youth Ambassadors
Allyson Evans
The process of becoming a
Youth Ambassador for the Town
of Middleton is one that I will never
forget and that
has thought me
many valuable
life lessons.
It was a pleasure to spend
my summer attending various
town events,
participating
with members of the town, my
fellow contestants and the community’s youth. The process was
full of unique experiences like
attending “Middleton in Action
day camp,” working with the recreation department, meeting a service group, and
giving speeches
to the town,
while also
meeting some
incredible new
people.
I was given
the Middleton
Rotary club as
my service group, this allowed
me to learn about everything they
do, and have done, while attending
a meeting of theirs and speaking
on the topic of volunteerism. The
Rotarians are an amazing group
of people.
The other major part of becoming a youth ambassador is
creating a project plan of a project
you will carry out if selected as a
youth ambassador; my project, a
tourism video of the great things
in our town will soon be in the
making. As a youth ambassador, I
am thoroughly looking forward to
participating in my town, showing
others what it has to offer, while
also meeting all the incredible
people who live in our community.
