Our Fabulous Faculty
All of our professional teachers are continuously upgrading their
teaching skills and developing increased levels of expertise.
This month we are recognizing teachers at HAAS who are either
expanding their expertise beyond their certification by pursuing
college coursework or in-service training to become certified in
areas such as ESOL, and gifted or working toward finalizing the
requirements for their professional certificates. These teachers
are approved by the School Board to teach in or out-of-field, per
the Department of Education.
Teachers are considered out of field if they
are teaching the primary English/Language
Arts to identified English Language
Learners (ELL), or if they are completing
their Gifted or Reading endorsement. Out
of field teachers will complete three
semester hours or 60 in-service credits per
year until all required coursework is
completed. The ESOL coursework is
required by the FL Department of
Education, per the Multicultural Education
Training Advocacy (META) Consent Decree.

Reading Treasures Program
Math Superstars Program
Math Superstars is an enrichment program developed by the
Florida Department of Education that gives children the
opportunity to apply their higher-order thinking skills to Math
problems.
Every Monday, students will receive a
worksheet to complete independently
which they will complete and return to
their homeroom teacher on or before the
end of the week (Friday).
Students will also receive special
incentives for their participation and
achievements in the Math Superstars
Program. Students in Grades 1-4 will be entered into a weekly
raffle as they turn in their completed worksheets. Students in
Grades 5-8 who complete their worksheets for a full month will
receive a Denim Dress Down Day.
As a parent, your role in the Math Superstars Program is to
encourage and facilitate your child’s problem-solving skills.
Listen as your child shares their thinking about each problem.
Feel free to guide your child toward certain strategies, but
please do not give your child the answers. It is normal for a
student NOT to be able to complete every problem on a work
sheet. The process of reading, understanding, and approaching
the problems are valuable steps in solving many types of
problems.
We hope the rewards your child achieves will last a lifetime!

“Open a Book…Find a Treasure!”
Reading is one of the most important skills your child will
learn, which is why HAAS has created a very exciting program
- Reading Treasures - to encourage reading all year around!
The program information can be found on the HAAS Website
on the School Information Page (www.hollywoodcharter.org/
schoolinfo) . Reading Treasures at the top right of the page.
The reading requirement for your child is to read 50
chunks of book independently this year. Please note that
Summer Reading counted for at least 2 chunks.
Students should track the books they’ve read throughout the
year in their agendas or on the reading log provided online for
parents under Reading Treasures This should be checked
frequently to ensure that they are on track
to read twelve 125-page “chunks” each
quarter. Each student will receive on 20
point grade in Reading class each quarter
based upon the number of “Chunks” they
have completed. Once students finish
reading a book they will complete an
activity of their choice listed under the
“Reading Response Activity List” on the 2nd page of each
grade level memo which went home and is also on the
website.
A chart will be used to track the number of books the class
has read. As the teacher tracks their progress, students will
receive incentives along the way for reaching their goals as a
class.
Your child has an important goal to reach and we need your
help to maximize his/her success. Please check your child’s
reading frequently to ensure that he/she is reading for the
required 20 minutes a night.
MyOn Reader
Last year HAAS purchased an online library for your children.
You can access this library on any digital device that has
internet connection (including phones)!!
There are over 4,000 books ranging from
Kindergarten to 12th grade.
This program has audio and visual
support for the books that will help expand
your child's imagination into the digital
world of reading. Your child received a flyer that contained
their username and password. If you need it again, please
email their teacher.
Please take advantage of this digital library to increase your
child's reading achievement . To access the library:

Mandatory Lice Checks
The next mandatory lice check will take place on Tuesday,
February 17th for all students in Grades K to 8. It is, and
always has been, school policy to perform lice checks on all
students upon their return to HAAS
following any 3 day weekend or
scheduled break.
All homeroom teachers conduct this
check as part of our morning routine on
the first day back. As always, if lice are
found, the student will be picked up
immediately by parents and a notification
letter will be sent to all students in the
specific classroom.
Parents must also report to the school if their child is found to
have lice at home. A precautionary classroom lice check will be
performed as needed based on this information.
IMIPORTANT NOTE: All students sent home with lice
must be re-checked and cleared by Administration
before going back into the classroom.
Late Parents = Late Students
The Broward County Code of Student Conduct for
Elementary and Secondary Students states that students
have a responsibility to attend all classes and to be on time.
Please be mindful that a student may be
absent or tardy no more than 5 days in a
standard marking period. Tardiness is
disruptive to the learning environment
and can have a negative impact on
student achievement. Excessive
tardiness can impact grade level
promotion.
Students that arrive on time have the
opportunity to organize themselves prior to the start of class.
When students enter the classroom late, they miss morning
work and cause a distraction to the other students who have
arrived on time. We appreciate you adhering to our start
time and making every effort to ensure that your child is
on time to school.
Reminders:

7:45 am - Doors open to all students

8:10 am - Tardy Warning Bell Rings

8:15 am - Tardy Bell Rings
Early Dismissal Reminder
If you need to pick your child up for
an appointment before the end of the
school day, please do so
before 2:00 pm.
Students will not be released
between 2:00 and 2:45 pm.
Valid Driver’s License Required to Enter
School Building

All parents must bring a valid driver’s license as ID
when picking up students early from school.

All parents and parent volunteers must bring a valid
driver’s license that will be scanned into the school’s
security system before
entrance to the school
building is permitted.

Thank you for your
cooperation with the safety
measures that are in place
to keep your children safe.
Lost & Found
Lost & Found is conveniently located at the bottom of the
main staircase as you enter the school.
Lost & Found will be cleaned out every Friday, and all
unclaimed items will be donated. Please make sure your
children check Lost & Found daily.
We recommend that you write your child’s
name on any items likely to be left behind or
lost. All items are checked for student
names and will be returned to those students
during school hours.
Parent Parking
Because our school is in a downtown location, parking is
challenging for our families. The residential streets that we
navigate daily are already filled with resident permit parking.
Finding a suitable parking space can be difficult.
We want to remind our families that we must always be
respectful to our surrounding community. Please do not doublepark, blocking resident cars, and
please do not block or park in resident
driveways.
We also do not want to park in lots that
belong to our neighboring businesses
such as the First Baptist Church, the
Art & Culture Center of Hollywood, and
Publix to name a few. As we want the
neighbors to respect our property, we
ask that you respect theirs.
Parking in the old school’s driveway (between the school and
the parking garage) is not permitted. Violators will be towed at
their own expense ($100).
Additionally, it is important that as adults, we all use crosswalks
when crossing the street, demonstrating to our students that
everyone practices safety first.
Free Parking is available around Young Circle and on
Harrison Street. Please take a few more minutes to
properly park and to be a good neighbor.
National School Lunch Program
Parents can find an application to the School Meals Program (Free & Reduced) on the School Information Page of the school’s
website: (www.hollywoodcharter.org/schoolinfo) or in the information bins inside the school lobby. All completed applications are to
be returned to Ms. Calvert, the Cafeteria Manager for processing.
Menus will be emailed to our HAAS families monthly and a link to the daily, weekly, and monthly menus is
always available on the School Information Page for your convenience.

Uniforms vs. Cooler Weather
The cold weather is just around the corner and we would like to
remind our returning families and inform our new families of our
cold weather uniform policies.
During cold weather, many students
wear non-uniform jackets to
school. This is permitted outside the
school only. Once entering the
school building, all non-uniform
outerwear must be removed. While in
school, students must wear the appropriate navy blue jacket (or
previous HAAS jacket). Parents can purchase the school’s
jacket through Planet T Uniforms, the HAAS uniform provider,
or may purchase a plain navy blue jacket, sweater, or
sweatshirt (with no logos, writing, or pictures) from any
store.
Additionally, during the colder weather, students often wear long
sleeved shirts under their uniform shirts. Please be aware
of the following color requirements for those shirts that are
worn under the school shirt:


Elementary School: solid white or solid red
Middle School: solid white or solid navy
Please remember that boots are never permitted as part of our
school dress code.
Thank you for helping maintain our higher standard of dress. We
believe that uniforms foster a positive environment, build
community within our school, and bring about higher academic
achievement.
