The magazine is made possible via collaboration between Home Building & Renovating Magazine and RK-Tec, a group of leading brands involved in various aspects of the kitchen industry, the expertise involved provides for a unique publication designed to educate those embarking on a kitchen project. RK-Tec has for a number of years utilised the National Home Building & Renovating Show to demonstrate the three vital ingredients required to create successful kitchens: • • • Exciting & innovative design Top quality products & components First class installation & project management. Participation in the Master-class forums at the National Home Building & Renovating Shows is an avenue RK-Tec have utilised to promote the importance they place on education in the creation of successful kitchen projects and 2015 sees an exciting new era for RK-Tec via their partnership with Potton’s Self Build Academy. This latest edition of Kitchen Inspiration features two fascinating case-studies involving the RK-Tec brands and Potton: The first being the kitchen in Potton’s exciting new ‘Garden Room’ development of the Gransden show-home at their Self Build Show Centre (St Neots) and the second being the two kitchens RK-Tec are exhibiting at the 2015 National Homebuilding & Renovating Show (NEC), one which later will be installed into Potton’s Ruskin show-home at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre (Swindon). This can be a daunting task with so many different elements to consider, and an almost endless array of furniture, appliances, worksurfaces, sinks, taps, flooring, lighting, and décor available to you. Budget will inevitably have a part to play in your final decision but a good piece of advice comes from John Ruskin (1819 -1900). “It’s unwise to pay too much, but it is unwise to pay too little. When you pay too much you lose a little money, that is all. When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the things you bought it to do.” ‘Longevity and reliability may cost that bit more at the start, but will reap dividends later, as replacing items that have failed or never functioned as required, can prove a costly affair’ When embarking on creating a kitchen it is worth bearing in mind both the lifespan and performance expectations you have. Longevity and reliability may cost that bit more at the start, but will reap dividends later, as replacing items that have failed or never functioned as required, can prove a costly affair. Having decided to proceed with your kitchen project, we highly recommend you engage and interact with a skilled and experienced kitchen designer to help and guide you through all that is available on the market and ensure each element fulfils your expectations for the long term, regards both aesthetics, function and lifespan. << www.rk-tec.co.uk 005 Above: Example of Design Criteria Document Middle: Redesign of island to suit space restrictions Below: Linear adaptation of kitchen design to suit budget Right Page: Corian work surface in deep Night Sky contrasted with timber table top Design Phase Through tailored design RK-Tec produce kitchens to suit individual tastes, requirements and aspirations E nsuring the design for your new kitchen fulfils all your expectations is critical to the enjoyment and satisfaction that successful projects inevitably generate. Guaranteeing that your kitchen achieves this requires involvement to ensure everything is correct at the design stage and prior to signing contracts. A good starting point is to utilise RK-Tec’s ‘Design Criteria Document’ which acts as an aide memoir, to collate information from you about your requirements for your new kitchen. Utilise magazines such as this, brochures, go to shows, attend lectures, visit showrooms, explore what looks good and works for you. ‘Alter the design and specification on computer until you get it just right’ Computers have revolutionised the ability for designers and clients to interact with one another and ensure the final project is absolutely right for you. Alter the design and specification on computer until you get it just right, as changing things on site inevitably proves expensive. The second stage is to work with a skilled designer to help interpret your vision for your new kitchen and to turn it into reality. Communication and interaction between designer and client is the secret to ensuring your kitchen performs and achieves all you desire. Creating an exciting and successful kitchen project is an art and engaging with an experienced designer is the best advice we can give. To demonstrate, here we have a kitchen with two additional designs highlighting how the initial concept can be adapted and developed to meet budgetary requirements, but without losing the integrity of the original design. << www.rk-tec.co.uk 007 Above: Ventilation ducting must be installed early in the build Middle: Avoid placing underfloor heating under furniture and appliances Below: Furniture should be fitted into a pre-decorated room Left Page: Callerton’s Berkley door painted Stone Grey and combined with their Classic feature Planned Perfection RK-Tec’s design philosophy is simple - plan ahead to avoid costly and timely issues later down the line T he importance of installation and project management of your new kitchen should not be underestimated – it is critical to a successful outcome. The design and all the products incorporated may be first class, but if the installation is not up to standard you are likely to be disappointed, or at the very least suffer time delays, additional cost and stress. The secret of all successful kitchen projects is to ensure decisions are made and finalised before embarking on the project and there being an accurate paper trail to follow. Having established the final design and all the components involved enables service drawings to be produced, which are vital for the installation phase. ‘The importance of installation and project management of your new kitchen should not be underestimated’ Installing the kitchen is almost the final element of your new build, extension, or renovation project, but this requires all the services: electrics, gas, water, waste, lighting, extraction, heating - to be in the correct place and ready for the kitchen, not once the installation has commenced. A new kitchen is a major investment and it is important to understand this involves furniture, appliances and technology, which should all be treated with care. You would never put a new dining table or living room suite into a room not yet ready to receive them – your new kitchen deserves the same duty of care. The installation of the kitchen comes at the end of the project, but it is vital this is planned in conjunction with the design of your new home not once the project is under way. Under-floor heating, complex extraction, services and electrics, all items that cannot be retro fitted – these must be designed into the fabric of the build prior to installation of the kitchen. << www.rk-tec.co.uk 009 Sympathetic Revival Lofty ceilings & grand windows provide a feature backdrop for this curvaceous renovation. A passion for interiors and a blank canvas to work from, allowed Interior Designer Sandrina Cecchini to base her decisions on what worked best for this listed building rather than imposing a style on it. The respectful renovation of this Glasgow property into three stunning apartments is a masterclass in decoration; uniting contemporary and classic styles whilst preserving the essence of each. ‘Uniting contemporary and classic styles whilst preserving the essence of each’ Being able to work with the developer from the beginning and with potential future owners in mind, Sandrina was able to co-ordinate everything. But to achieve her vision for the kitchens she turned to Shaun Dunbar of JS Geddes. “I wanted something a little different to what other developers were offering, while being in keeping with the property” explains Sandrina. As specialists in the fusion of modern and traditional kitchen furniture, Shaun recommended Callerton as the obvious choice. >> www.rk-tec.co.uk 011 Left Page: Classic and contemporary styles united in the preservation of this period Glasgow property Middle: Lofty ceilings and grand windows provide a feature backdrop to this Walnut and Clam kitchen Below: Raised plinths and varied cabinet heights adds a deliberate diversity to create distinct levels “The soft lines of Callerton’s Deco feature teamed with curves in the tall units and centre island, allowed us to incorporate feature pieces without being obtrusive” The lofty ceilings and grand windows provide a feature backdrop to the Walnut and Clam Chelsea painted kitchen which fits effortlessly within its impressive surroundings without calling out for attention. Its soothing palette creates an air of calm and tranquillity whilst functionally providing plenty of space for cooking, dining and living in an open plan setting. The statement cabinetry lies at the heart of a thoughtful kitchen design. The unusual curves were suggested by Shaun. “We wanted to create an elegant space with a mix of contemporary and classic references” he says. “The soft lines of Callerton’s Deco kitchens teamed with curves in the tall units and centre island, allowed us to incorporate feature pieces without being obtrusive.” Where bold lines are used, such as in the contemporary heigh wall cabinets, breakfast bar and triple step cornice, the contrast is subtle but effective. Whereas the combination of raised plinths and varied cabinet heights adds a deliberate diversity to create distinct levels of depth and space. An impressive portfolio of integrated appliances from Siemens includes combination steam oven, microwave, single oven, warming drawer, dishwasher and fridge freezer, to offer bounds of functionality. Corian, wood and glass worksurfaces edge the furniture and are originally used further as sculptural splashbacks, imparting gravitas to the overall scheme. Together, Shaun and Sandrina have managed to achieve a light saturated space with a peaceful allure. Their considered mix of furnishings; from pared back cabinets with keyhole handles, natural worktops and inspired appliance gadgetry, results in a bright inviting scheme perfectly poised between classical and contemporary. A sympathetically styled renovation which seamlessly connects this period property to a modern way of life. << www.rk-tec.co.uk 013 Flexible cooking. For a life less ordinary. Siemens flexInduction The Siemens flexInduction hob range combines razor-sharp looks, innovative technology and ergonomic design. flexInduction has induction zones which can be controlled independently or linked together to make a larger cooking area. All created to coordinate beautifully with other Siemens appliances in your kitchen and to give you the freedom to cook whatever you want, however you want to do it. For those that lead busy lives, it’s important to have appliances that can adapt and change to your lifestyle. A Siemens flexInduction hob does just that by giving you the option to cook with different sizes of pans and accessories, like the large griddle plate, as well as on smaller areas or across multiple extended zones. Whether you’re cooking for two or 22, a Siemens flexInduction hob opens up more possibilities with your cooking. Accessories for your hob. The extendable cooking zones of a Siemens flexInduction hob make it ideal to cook with much larger accessories like a teppanyaki pan, griddle plate or roasting dish. These fit over three or four zones and offer more even heating – perfect for stir frys and steaks. Try something new with a flexInduction accessory and cook delicious food to impress your dinner party guests. All accessories are available to buy on the Siemens website. Effortless cleaning. flexInduction is easier to clean and safer to use because there are no protruding parts and the ceramic cooking top is warmed only by the heat transferred back from the cookware and its contents. Spillages are less likely to burn on too, and there is normally no need to wait for the glass to cool down before simply wiping it over with a cloth. And if you turn on an induction hob without having a pot or pan on it, there is no risk of burning yourself, because the hob itself doesn’t heat up. Fast and precise. Induction cooking is recognised as being one of the quickest, safest and most efficient methods of cooking available. However when you’re in a hurry, the Power Boost setting can increase the power output of selected zones by 50%, allowing precision heat when you need it most – perfect when time is of the essence and you want to speed up your cooking. The project we are concentrating on here is the recently launched ‘Garden Room’ extension which has transformed the original Gransden house into an exciting open plan kitchen, living, dining area. The transformation from the original conservatory to the new open plan ‘Garden Room’ demonstrates how an existing property can be revolutionised to alter not only the way it looks, but how it functions. Callerton; RK-Tec’s kitchen furniture brand have been instrumental in this exciting project, along with Potton’s design team. Kitchens set within conservatories face certain challenges such as how to control the heat in summer and the cold in winter, how to avoid condensation and ensure good extraction. Potton’s new highly insulated ‘Garden Room’ resolves these issues which made Callerton’s job of designing an exciting functioning kitchen much simpler. The original ground floor plans of the Gransden demonstrate the contrast with the new ‘Garden Room’ design and the removal of the walls dividing the kitchen and dining area. The recessed French windows squared off with the external wall adds a further significant difference. The point to be drawn from this is not to design your new kitchen in isolation from the overall design and fabric of your new house or extension - but in association with it. ‘The transformation from the original conservatory to the new open plan ‘Garden Room’ demonstrates how an existing property can be revolutionised’ Conservatory Garden Room Left Page: The heavily insulated walls of the Garden Room improve temperature control and prevent condensation issues associated with conservatories Potton’s initial brief to Callerton’s design team for the kitchen was to evolve the existing traditional Gransden house into something more modern and practical for today’s market. It was to move away from the original dated hand-painted kitchen to something more up-to-date, but not too contemporary, as that will be showcased in the new 2015 Hi-Tech Passivhaus project. The flat plan and CAD drawings of the new kitchen highlight the tools available to help communication between client and designer. Many people have difficulty understanding a flat plan, but 3D CAD imagery allows clients to build an accurate picture of the final look of their new kitchen. This is especially useful when involved in a new build project when there is nothing physical to relate to. >> Right Page: The Callerton furniture mixes shaker painted and contemporary stained slab doors with Geometric features Middle: The flat plan demonstrates the simplicity of the kitchen design Right: The CAD imagery is used to communicate the design effectively www.rk-tec.co.uk 017 The photography of the completed project demonstrates the transformation achieved via the collaboration of the Callerton and Potton design teams. The original design brief highlighted the importance of aesthetics and function, it also involved being price conscious and the style had to encompass a crossover between classic and contemporary. Both design teams deserve praise for their interpretation of the brief. The Callerton furniture mixes shaker painted and contemporary stained slab doors with Geometric features and is highly effective.
