ASP-301 Professors Emeriti March 10 ASP-301a “The Northern Lights: Myths and Science” The Northern Lights-Aurora Borealis is an amazing and colorful natural phenomenon. Many myths have been spun about its origin, and only lately have we gained a scientific understanding of its dynamic appearance. This talk will show through photos and videos how our explanations for the “light show” have changed over time. Instructor: Dr. Per Aannestad, Professor Emeritus ASU Per A. Aannestad, Ph.D., received his undergraduate degree in astronomy from the University of Oslo, Norway, and his graduate degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. His postdoctoral years from 1971-1975 were spent first at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York and later at Steward Observatory, University of Arizona, studying the far-infrared sky via balloon observations. Since 1975, Per has been a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at ASU, until his retirement in 2004. His research interests were the physics of the interstellar medium, interstellar dust, and star formation. He is currently the Director of the Emeritus College Academy for Continued Learning. March 17 ASP-301b “Target Earth: Asteroids, Comets, and Near-Earth Objects” On February 15, 2013 a meteor weighing 10,000 metric tons exploded above Chelyabinsk, Russia, releasing more than 30 times the energy of the Hiroshima bomb, and injuring hundreds. There are more than 10,000 asteroids and comets that can pass near earth. This lecture will describe the various groups of objects that may pose a threat, some of the earlier impacts, and how we might even prevent or mitigate the effects of a disastrous collision in the future. Instruction: Dr. Per Aannestad 8 March 24 ASP-301c “Whistle Blowers as Heroes: Profiles in Courage” whis•tle–blow•er (noun) (Merriam-Webster) : a person who tells police, reporters, etc., about something (such as a crime) that has been kept secret. Who blew the whistle on the facts behind the “O” ring seal catastrophe following the hallenger explosion? Hear about the whistle blower who exposed the truth about the contaminated drinking water (TCE) just north of the Indian Bend Wash which is now a Superfund Site. Based on over 100 interviews from across America, Dr. Ron Hardert will give his remarks and findings on the personal characteristics of these Whistle Blowers. Come hear many of the fascinating details surrounding these Whistle Blower Heroes. April 7 ASP-301d ASP-301 Professors Emeriti (con’t) “Modern Cosmology: The Big Bang and All That” Constantly revised to contain the most recent information on this developing topic, ‘Modern Cosmology”, this lecture will be centered on the Big Bang model of the origin of the universe, including observational evidence, the meanings of dark energy and matter, and current results on the Inflation Model. Instructor: Dr. Richard Jacob, Professor Emeritus ASU, Barrett Emeritus Fellow Richard Jacob, Ph.D., taught physics at all levels at ASU for almost 40 years before retiring. He served as chair of the department of physics and astronomy and is the founding Dean of the Emeritus College at ASU. His teaching areas emphasized quantum physics, relativity, electrodynamics, and mathematical physics, and his research is in theoretical elementary particle physics. Bust your Desert Gardening Myths. Tuesdays 8-9:30 a.m. Chapel Patio Do you believe little that is worthwhile grows in the desert, that you don’t have enough space, time, or money to make gardening worthwhile in the ”Arizona Wilderness?” Master Gardener, Sam Kelsall, will expose the truth about desert gardening in this hands-on class that will teach you to grow bountiful edibles, but most of all--- your own confidence! All it takes is a 2x2 foot area. You’ll be introduced to square-foot gardening, soil preparation, water conservation, weed control, and how to manage the Phoenix sun. ASA-301 Instructor: Pat Serie Pat painted part time throughout his business career in Fortune 500 companies, and exhibited at nearby shows and galleries. His work often reflected the green woods of rural New Hampshire and the richness of the mountains. In 1997, his family relocated to the desert Southwest, and many of his works now center around images of the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. Pat studied art at Manchester Institute of Art and the Previte Gallery (both in New Hampshire) and the Scottsdale Artists School. He was juried into the Scottsdale Celebration of Art. ASA-303 Portrait Sculpting in Clay Thursdays 9—10:50 a.m. Room 419 Joy of Painting LIMITED SPACE! Limit: 10 This class is for all levels of ability. All that is needed is desire and courage! Courage to leave your fears at the door and come in and enjoy the wonderful process of sculpture. We will be sculpting a three dimensional portrait from a flat, twodimensional image. Instructor: Susan Henningsen Susan Henningsen received a BFA Degree from ASU. She taught art for 16 years in public schools and continues to teach portrait, figurative and base-relief sculpture at Scottsdale Artist School. Her best-known work is the larger-than-life bronze portrait sculpture of Sandra Day O’Connor, U.S. Supreme Court Justice, installed in the Sandra Day O’Connor U.S. Courthouse in Phoenix. ASD-301 Fun of Drawing Instructor: Rodney Cobb Rodney Cobb, a 20 year veteran artist, has expertise in drawing, painting, anatomy, design, color, plein air painting, and portrait painting. He is associated with International Plein Air Painters and Oil Painters of America. Rodney received a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning from Michigan State University and a Juris Doctorate Degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan. Most recently, Rodney has written his first book on the elements of drawing and painting, Best Daily Art Practices: Drawing and Painting. ASH-101 SURVEY OF ART HISTORY 101: From Prehistory to the end of the Middle Ages Thursdays 10-11:20 a.m. Room 414 ASH-101 Survey of Art History Survey of Art History 101 is the foundation, broad overview and acquaintance with the history of painting, sculpture, and architecture from its beginnings in prehistoric times to the end of the Middle Ages. We shall study works of art as expressions of the needs, ideals, and aspirations of the particular society in which they were created; a historical point of view. This Art Survey course is the groundwork and footing for further developed art history study offered in the Fall Term 2016. Instructor: Anne Connor Anne “adores teaching” and is excited to teach Art History at Encore University. She was raised and educated in Brussels, Belgium before coming to the Valley in 1990. In 1997 Anne founded the Friends of European Art at the Phoenix Art Museum where she served as its first president, contributed several articles in the catalog for the “Copper as Canvas” exhibit co-sponsored by the Museum, was a member of the Phoenix Art Museum’s Collection Committee and participated in the training of apprentice docents. In 2003, together with Regent Professor Caio Pagano of ASU, Anne started the “Evenings with Art and Music,” program highlighting similar currents in both disciplines. These Evenings have contributed significant financial support to piano students at Arizona State University. Anne taught Humanities and survey courses of Art History at Scottsdale Community College and Glendale Community College. She has also taught upper division courses in Northern and Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art at ASU for 5 years and is currently teaching at Scottsdale Artist School. Anne gives regular lectures at the Phoenix Art Museum, Scottsdale Community College and special interest groups in the Valley. She holds a Master Degree in Art History from ASU. 12 ⓬ ASC-301 Communications, A Core Skill Wednesdays 11 a.m.—12:20 p.m. Room 411 Whenever people interact, the way in which they exchange information and influence each other is through interpersonal communication. Often communication goes well. But when it does not, our relationships at home or in the world at large can be severely impaired. Being human and imperfect, all of us experience communication challenges. This is the rule not the exception. This five-session course will focus on core individual and group communication skills that have been proven to help make challenging interactions go better. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and practice these skills and to explore actual communications challenges from their daily lives. The goal of the course: that every participant will improve his or her daily interactions with others. Dr. Gullen will lead a class on how to talk with your doctor (and the best approach to understanding all those test results) for Encore University. ASC-301 Communications A Core Skill Instructor: David Gullen, MD, MACP A graduate of Princeton University, Dr. David J. Gullen received his medical degree from the University of Arizona and a master’s degree in microbiology and immunology from ASU. Dr. Gullen joined the Division of Community Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic Arizona in 1997 and is currently Chair of the Board of Directors of the Flinn Foundation, a Master of the American College of Physicians, member of the Board of Directors of the Translational Genomics Institute and Co-director of the physician-patient communication skills curriculum at Mayo, where he co-founded a program in communication skills training. After World War II, Scottsdale gained a reputation as the center for arts, crafts and fashion in the southwest, a cachet that continues today in the area’s galleries, museums and events. Learn more about Scottsdale’s first century of art from community historian and author Joan Fudala. Instructor: Joan Fudala Joan Fudala is a full-time community historian, consultant, researcher and author, specializing in the history of the greater Scottsdale area. Hunt managed to win seven terms as governor of Arizona, including the first one starting in 1912. This highly colorful politician led the progressive efforts to open the political system to the people, reign in large corporations, protect labor, bring about penal reform and led the battle to protect Arizona’s water from California. Instructor: Dr. David Berman, Professor Emeritus ASU ASU Emeritus David Berman. Ph.D., is a senior research fellow with the Morrison Institute for Public Policy and a professor emeritus of political science at ASU. He has written several books on state and local government, politics and public policy. Just published in March, 2015 is David’s book, George Hunt: Arizona’s Seven-Term Crusading Governor. April 16 ASH-302e The Valley’s Canal History Focus your attention on the history of some of the Valley’s oldest canals, starting with a brief background on the Hohokam system moving into canals constructed as the Valley was settled during the late 1800’s and beyond. Included in the discussion will be a short discussion of some of the trails/highlights available on the canals today. Aydin Aygun was born and raised near the River Euphrates in Eastern Turkey. He led the EU Turkey Travel Group in October 2014. A graduate of the Turkish Military Academy, he earned a BA in Business Administration and Leadership. As a professionally trained and licensed guide by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Aydin has been leading tours since 1994.
