Prayer and Devotion Opportunities
The Sacrament of Baptism
Our Lady of Fatima Devotion
The Sacrament is celebrated on Sundays at 1:30 PM.
Parents, please call the parish office to arrange a
meeting with one of our priests or deacons to begin to
make arrangements.
Our Lady came to Fatima with a message from God
to every man, woman and child. She promised that
the whole world would be at peace, and that many
souls would go to heaven if her requests were
listened to and obeyed.
In response to her requests, the First Saturday of each
month is devoted to Our Lady of Fatima. This
devotion includes 8:00 AM mass, a novena to Our
Lady of Fatima, the Rosary, the opportunity to
celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and
fellowship in Carew hall at 9:00 AM.
All are welcome at this devotion.
The Sacrament of Eucharist
See front cover for mass times. If you are sick for an
extended period of time or are homebound, please
contact the parish office to arrange to have someone
bring Communion to you.
The Sacrament of Confirmation
School aged children can prepare for this Sacrament
by contacting our religious Education office. Adults
or older teens who have yet to be Confirmed should
contact the Parish Office
The Sacrament of Reconciliation
As listed on front cover or call rectory for an
appointment with one of our priests.
The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick
This Sacrament is for the living. We celebrate this
Sacrament each Spring and Fall for those who are
chronically ill, advanced in age, or who are about to
undergo surgery or hospitalization. We can arrange
the Sacrament at other times by calling the Parish
Office..
Emergencies: call the office to arrange a visit from a
priest.
Nighttime emergencies
(631) 585-1130
The Sacrament of Matrimony
Bride or Groom please call the office at least six
months before your desired wedding date to begin
preparations for marriage. Please make contact with
the parish before making other wedding day plans!
The Sacrament of Holy Orders
Anyone who is feeling called to service in the church
as a priest deacon or in consecrated religious life
should contact the parish office to speak to one of the
priests or deacons for guidance.
Interested in possibly becoming Catholic?
Please contact the rectory to arrange a meeting to
discuss your questions. We have regular classes to
help people learn about the faith and decide if
becoming Catholic is what you and God want for you
right now. This whole process of inquiry and
potential conversion is called RCIA—The Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults.
St Joseph Parish Monthly Recollection
On the First Friday of every month, at 7:30 PM we
hold our Monthly Parish Recollection. This is an
hour of prayer (recollection) before our Lord present
in the Blessed Sacrament—whose heart is the source
of immense charity and generous love.
The foundation of this prayer is God’s presence in
our souls as Creator, Preserver, and Author of all
Graces (“In Him we live and move and have our
being.” Acts 17:28). God is our Father and our
Friend and is our sweet Guest.
We are called to acknowledge this great truth: God is
in each of us, our soul is His Temple.
This evening of recollection includes Exposition of
the Blessed Sacrament, praying the Psalms, Silence,
a Gospel reading and a reflection on many topics
including: the Cardinal Virtues of prudence, justice,
temperance, and fortitude; The Theological Virtues
of faith, hope and love; The gifts of the Holy Spirit:
wisdom,
understanding,
counsel,
fortitude,
knowledge, piety and awe & wonder in God’s
presence. The evening ends with Benediction.
Every soul, hungry and thirsty for God, is invited to
this holy hour every First Friday of the month to
adore, venerate and contemplate the Sacred Heart
of Jesus and to have a quiet dialogue with God.
St Joseph Men’s Prayer Group
We meet every Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM in the
Church where we pray the Rosary.
Afterward we move to the main vestibule for coffee,
donuts and fellowship.
This is a great opportunity to be strengthened in your
commitment as a Catholic man just by spending time
with others like you!

OUR LITURGY
In the first reading, we hear about the Mosaic Law
concerning leprosy. This reading provides the
background for our Gospel in which Jesus heals a
leper who comes to him for help. Saint Paul exhorts
us to be imitators of Christ, leading others to him by
our actions.

Opportunities for Prayer this Lent
“What are you doing for Lent?” is better
than “What are you giving up?” Here are
some things you can do to grow with God
this Lent

not make an appointment to spend some
time with Jesus every
Monday afternoon in Lent?

A little more on the Synod on the Family
Last week’s bulletin had information about how you
can put your two cents in on the upcoming Synod
on the Family (part 2). A few people have said to
me, “Fr. Mike I don’t understand the questions.
How can I answer?” Here’s my suggestion for now:
Since you have to have a question number for your
response, put down “question 1” and then respond
explaining that the questions are incomprehensible
to the ordinary Catholic and so do not invite
participation in the process.
One person suggested that I give some explanation
of the questions to you. I will try in one of the next
two weeks but I am having trouble understanding
them myself! Here is the general info again:
1.Only E-mail responses sent to [email protected] will be
accepted.
2.Only E-mail responses that include the respondent’s name and
parish will be accepted.
3.Responses will be accepted in the following languages: English,
Spanish, French, Italian, German and Portuguese.
4.Thank you in advance for not sending faxes, mailed, printed or
handwritten documents. They will not be accepted.
5.The questions to address upon reflection are those found in the
Preparatory Document and may be found on the Vatican website:
http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/synod/documents/
rc_synod_doc_20141209_lineamenta-xiv-assembly_en.html
6.When responding, specific reference must be given to the question
number. So, for instance, if one is responding to question 3 in the
Preparatory Document, that fact should be clearly indicated in the
response.
All responses must be received by
March 13, 2015.
Praying as a Welcoming Family
I am sure many of you noticed over the past two
weekends that I have brought children up around the
altar during the Eucharistic Prayers. There have
been a range of responses to this: “That was
adorable!” Definitely not the response we’re
looking for. “I’m uncomfortable with this and I’m
not sure you should be doing it!” Also not the
response we’re looking for. But in between these
two responses were some that were closer to the
goal of celebrating this way with children: “I’m
very happy to see the children learning reverence
up at the altar.” “I was amazed to see a few older
kids up at the altar and to watch the way they paid
attention during the Eucharistic Prayer.”
The purpose of bringing children around the altar is
to help them to enter our liturgical prayer so that
they can do the same thing when they are sitting
with their family. It is a tool for their ongoing
formation because “...words and signs have not been
sufficiently adapted to the capacity of
children.” (Directory for Masses with Children 2).
Because of the wide range of responses I have
received, I reread the Directory for Masses with
Children. I have found that the adaptation that I
have been using for the past two weeks, while not
specifically mentioned in the Directory, is definitely
within the scope, spirit, and intention of the
Directory.
As in many parishes, we have a large population of
young families who are not participating in the
liturgical life of the parish with regularity. It is time
for us to recommit to the apostolic mission given to
us by Jesus: “Go therefore and make disciples of all
the nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to obey all that I have commanded
you…” (Mt 28: 19-20).
We do a great job of Baptizing (about 200 a year)
but we have work to do on teaching.
So I have created a committee comprised of the
Religious Education Staff and our second grade
teacher in our school. We will spend a lot of time
with the Directory for Masses with Children and we
will work on appropriate adaptations for masses so
that all of our children who attend will have
opportunities to be formed in their faith by the
liturgy. Bringing children around the altar is one
step in this formation. It will continue to happen
from time to time along with other efforts to engage
our children and young families in our liturgical life.
Let's do Lent different this time
What did you do (or should I say give up) for Lent
last year? How about the year before that? And the
year before that? I know so many adults who would
give the same answer to that question for every year
as far back as they can remember. As children we
were taught to give something up for Lent. I’m not
sure what the purpose of it was - I know now that it
was not to please God but I think that is what I
thought I was doing way back when. It was as if,
accomplishing this task of giving something up
would score us points in God’s book on our life.
I’m not too sure God has a book on our life and
even if there is one, I’m not sure that keeping score
on what I gave up for Lent is part of it.
So why were we told to give something up for Lent?
 To make more room for God in our life
 To turn away from a habit that had too much
control of our life
 To remind us to focus our attention more on
God and His Kingdom
 To enter the sacred space of the desert
 To symbolically walk the Way of the Cross
If you notice, all of these motivations are about
Turning and walking with God (repenting)!
Have you noticed that many times during Lent our
focus was more on getting through this season so we
could get back to the thing we gave up? Another
side effect of doing Lent this way was minimalism Can I skip the fast on Sundays? When exactly does
Lent end (so I can eat my chocolate)?
Maybe it is time to enter Lent a little bit differently.
Instead of “giving up and getting through it” try
making a goal of growth for Lent and Easter
together. Make Lent and Easter a “spring training”
time to help us get back on track with God.
Here’s a simple example - are sweets too big a
temptation in your life? Ask God to help you to
replace them with something healthier, like fruit.
Don’t just give up and leave a hole to be filled.
Replace a not so good habit with a better one.
Are you too selfish? Try doing one good thing for
someone every day in the first week of Lent (keep a
journal). Then in the second week, go for two a
day. Who knows, by Pentecost you may have
created a whole new pattern of Christian living!
Lent and Easter together form a great opportunity
for us to grow as disciples. Whatever you do, invite
God in.
Let’s pray for each other during this time!
Wednesday February 18 is
Ash Wednesday!
Marking ourselves with ashes goes all the way back
to the days of people like Jonah? He was the most
reluctant but most successful prophet in the bible.
God wanted Jonah to call the people of Nineveh to
conversion but Jonah was not thrilled about that
plan. So instead of going to Nineveh, he went the
other way, but God got him there eventually (We all
know the story of the big fish!)
When Jonah got to Nineveh, he walked through the
city and announced God’s plan to destroy the city if
the people did not repent.
Everyone in Nineveh repented! They dressed in
sack cloth and sat in ashes as a sign of repentance
and the city was saved.
What do we have in common with this story? We
all can always walk more closely with God so we do
need to repent (Turn and walk with God). But
sometimes we, like Jonah, can be a little reluctant
when it comes to this season of Lent. I often hear
people speak of it almost as if it is to be survived.
Maybe if we look at Lent as an opportunity to walk
more closely with God rather than a mandate to give
something up, we will get more from the season and
even enjoy it! For now, remember when Ashes are
being distributed:
Wed February 18 after the 7:00 and 9:00 masses
There will also be a prayer service with
distribution of ashes at 12:10 PM, 5:00 PM and
7:30 PM
Let’s all say Thank You!
Every winter Fr. Thomas goes home to India to
have his soul fed by family and friends - it is a time
of renewal for him. If the weather cooperates he
should be back by Ash Wednesday.
While Fr. Thomas has been away we have had the
pleasure of having Fr. Dominic here to help with
our liturgical celebrations. I have heard very
positive things about Fr. Dominic and I have also
enjoyed his company.
Fr. Dominic is a missionary with The Society of
African Missions. As a way of saying thank you to
him for his service, we will take a special collection
next weekend (February 21 - 22) to help with his
work in Africa.
Thank you all for the welcome you gave Fr.
Dominic and for your generosity as he leaves us.

PAIN CAPABLE UNBORN CHILD PROTECTION
ACT
This bill, sponsored by Congressman Trent Franks (R
-AZ) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) was previously
introduced in 2013 and passed by the House of
Representatives in June of 2013 by a vote of 228 to 196,
BUT was not released for a vote by the Senate. The bill,
HR-36, must be voted on by both the House of
Representatives and the Senate again. The new Senate
Majority leader, Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has promised
that he would release the bill to a vote in the Senate this
time around.
Ten states have already passed this Act into law and
bravo! This crucial law is based on babies’ ability to feel
pain and prohibits abortion of an unborn baby once he or
she reaches that point in development. This federal bill
would prevent abortions past 20 weeks after fertilization,
at which time there is substantial evidence that the
unborn children can feel excruciating pain.
The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act
may not be able to save all of New York’s unborn
children, but in the abortion capital of the country, New
York, we must seize every opportunity to save as many
lives as possible. Remember the struggle to ban Partial
Birth Abortion – the original bill was first introduced in
both the House of Representatives and the Senate in
June, 1995 and passed in both Houses. BUT – t hen
President Bill Clinton vetoed the bill twice; once in 1996
and once in 1997. If you recall, President George W.
Bush eventually signed the ban into law in November of
2003.
Naturally, Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion
groups sued, asserting that banning the partial birth
abortion procedure was unconstitutional. Finally, in April
of 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision,
reversing lower court decisions, and upheld the ban on
partial birth abortion. It took 11 years from the time the
bill was introduced to the time when the PBA ban
went into effect.
When all this controversy happened, it seemed it put the
spotlight on the term ‘abortion’ and forced the ordinary
person to confront its meaning. And when people are
faced with the truth about what abortion does to the
unborn child, they are repulsed. Perhaps the passing of
the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act might
be just the common goal the pro-life movement needs to
take another giant step forward.
