PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear ASOC Members and Friends of our Society
A Happy and Prosperous New Year 2015 to One and All.
The Festive Season, and for many, holidays are somehow interspersed from the time of our
AGM, Spring Exhibition, Cranleigh Art Show, End-of-Year Party and Summer Art Experience
to the extent that it sometimes appears as a continuous run. We all have the opportunity to
take time out, and for me I have felt relatively lazy since the physical SAE concluded – not
with the departure of tutors and participants but with the move back of materials and equipment to the studio and storage container, and the financial reconciliations that folllow. I honestly do not know what we would do without the ‘container’, but we are starting to even
outgrow that.
I wish to take a moment to thank a range of people for all their help including Tricia Wheatstone for organising the End-of-Year Party; Graham Parkins as Truckie #1, and Ray Barnett
as Truckie #2 - not only as a prominent SAE Tutor, Greg Rimes, Ian Sharpe, Mitchell Jones,
Ruben Larzabal and Mark Redzic (the “Movers”); Geoff Rohan, Tim Hardy, Eva Henry, Rosemary von Behrens, Gill and Pat Russell, Julia Widdup, Patricia Denham, Graham Skyring,
John Whitton, Bev Gaykema, and Marie Sexton (the “Shakers”); Carla Begbie, Rosemary
Hurley, Hilary Warren, Jean Willoughby, Isla Patterson, Tracey Creighton, Denise Moule and
Rebecca Acharya (the “Candlestick Makers”); and not least Mirta Larzabal and Dian Jones
(the gracious “Attenders” in spite of being SAE art students). I apologise to anyone I may have
accidentally left out.
I am going to single out Tracey Creighton since she is a new member to our Society and
recently moved from Merimbula to Canberra. Her efforts to assist the SAE were outstanding,
but most significantly when you see Tracey’s credentials as a well-established and distinguished artist – for example, she is part of that notable group of artists in the TV-series “Put
Some Colour in Your Life” hosted by Graeme Stevenson. Tracey is currently planning Workshop courses that she will run in ASOC in 2015, despite a heavy schedule of pre-booked
exhibitions and overseas travel.
Incidentally, Marie Sexton was the very deserving winner of a free pass to a future SAE, following our Prize Draw at the SAE Friday Lunch. A more detailed report on the SAE is in this
Newsletter, but if you have not looked you should see the array of photographs of the event
on our Webpages and Facebook.
I had the good fortune to open the Exhibition of Canberra Regional Artists “All Together Now”,
in early December, and held at the Ginnindera School House Gallery, and coordinated by Isla
Patterson. Since I’m not afraid of laughing at myself I could not help but overhear a comment
made by a distinguished guest that he rather thought the angels in a painting of the same title
looked rather like “pulled teeth”. Of course the said person was talking about my single “guest”
entry. Ah well, for all my efforts in abstracts I think I would better stick to realism. Isla you had
better tell “him” he has to buy the next round!
I remind you all that The ACT Region Catchment Groups Art Prizes – Art Exhibition is
scheduled to take place at The Gallery, Canberra Grammar School, April 12 – 16, 2015. The
theme is “Native Grasslands”, and this has enhanced our relationships with the Kosiuszko
and Myer Foundation Grasslands Projects. Entry conditions and enrolment forms are attached
to this Newsletter. You are allowed to submit more than one entry and I encourage you to do
so!!

SUMMER ART EXPERIENCE 2015
An Overview
The SAE Organising Committee for 2015
comprised Ian Sharpe, Rosemary Hurley, Carla
Begbie, Hilary Warren, and yours truly, and I have
received more hearty thanks and congratulatory
remarks on their behalf than ever before.
I was more than a little disappointed that out of the
thirteen carefully selected tutors, only eight made
the final cut simply based on lack of enrolments.
The unacknowledged Canberra recession can be
blamed in part, but there may be other reasons that
we need to analyse in planning 2016. For example,
some participants remarked on too few choices in
watercolour tutors, while others noted the intense
demands of dedicating an intensive week to
Peter Slobodian’s
Hill view
Tutor John Wilson
training, but to counter that yet others remarked on
the fact that “well, in reality it is only really 3.5 – 4
days”. These and the evaluation comments will be
examined, as they were last year, by the incoming
SAE organising committee. Many tutors and
participants favoured a shorter working day namely,
9 am – 4 pm.
In my President’s Letter I have referred to the input of
the teams of movers, shakers, candle-stick makers,
and attenders. We need more of you to volunteer to
help out in all facets of the preparation for an event of
this scale. We provided the usual opening morning
tea, and the Friday lunch, but this year the tutors were
catered for by the Canberra Raiders Leagues club,
since we had been warned of kitchen closures by the
school authorities – an eventuality that did not occur.
The Thursday walkaround again proved most popular
among members, relatives and friends, and most of
the work caused the participant’s “wow” reaction in
Greg Baker’s Oliver (in progress)
whatever studio was visited. It was unfortunate that I
Tutor Hadieh Afshani
overheard some dubious remarks on the “floor
display” outside Peter Griffen’s class. These objects
were not final art works, but rather some abstract underwashes that Peter has his students do for later
progression to abstract painting with much added colour.

This year I have chosen a few outstanding pieces done by specific participants in the rooms of specific
tutors, since most of my photographs form the content on both our Web pages and Facebook thanks to
Jenny Millett and Heather Holland, who both worked at high speed to mount these diplays.
From notes sent to me by Ray Barnett I also took the liberty of drafting up a piece on his methodology stages of developing a painting in-class, a worthy exercise for us all (see page 5).
Add to this that De Gillett donated one of her most colourful paintings for ASOC to use in fund raising,
and John Wilson a copy of his book: “The Journey Continues” for our Library. I am also happy to Report
that the member’s contributions of art work for KSS are hanging proudly on display, but I have to note
that the exceptional aboriginal art work being done by students at the school is well worth a view if you
have the chance to visit – tell them I told you so.
Of course some tutors have reached the end of their tenure period, and will not be returning next year.
One exception to this is John Wilson who hopes to return in 2017, but has prior commitments in 2016.

The Educational Workshop Program of ASOC
The Workshop Program comprises a series of three-hour evening sessions in the form of Modules held
over 3 - 4 consecutive weeks. The Modules are designed as much as to develop the participant’s
perceptions as well as arming them with a basket of new visual tools.
The Workshop Program we introduced in 2014 has been slightly modified. The earlier Modules 1 and 2
concerned with learning the mechanics of perspective drawing, mark making, colour and painting
techniques will now be conducted by Rick Cochrane in the Canberra Arts Workshop (CAW) Studio.
However, Module 3, presented by Rick focusses on Expressive Mono-print Printmaking, a one-day
weekend course, continues as an ASOC-artSTART Program.
The Chan Dissanayake Watercolour Workshops – Modules 4 and 5, Watercolour Fundamentals and
Watercolour Success, continue as ASOC-artSTART Programs with Module 5 commencing Tuesday
March 3rd and running each consecutive Tuesday to the 24th March 2015 as a follow-up to events in
2014.
It is our intention to develop additional modules during 2015. To this end we have approached the wellestablished artist and art tutor Tracey Creighton. Tracey Creighton has developed a series of unique
styles and techniques, which explore the unlimited capabilities of almost all art media and each of her
paintings reflects a vibrant kaleidoscope of colour. See: www.traceycreighton.com.
Tracey’s contribution to ASOC-artSTART will be entitled: PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF
ABSTRACT. This Module (Number 6) is a 4 week program incorporating: Design Composition, Colour
Harmony, Collage, Building Form and Dimension, Mixed Medium, Acrylic Painting. More details will be
posted on the Web soon. Tracey’s intent is to get you to approach a blank canvas with unabashed
excitement and to launch yourself into the unknown.
5
NOTE: The ASOC-artSTART series is intentionally modular since we appreciate that most people find
it difficult to maintain attendance of courses that run over extended periods. Each module aims at
developing specific capabilities and is backed up with personal mentoring. It is also strongly recommended that you do additional practice by joining an ASOC Workgroup.
Minimum number six, maximum number ten participants, depending on the course Module. For more
details and booking see the ASOC website: www.asoc.net.au
A NOTE FROM RAY BARNETT ON TUTOR METHODOLOGY
You might also be interested to know that I take photos of each painting during the course of each
demonstration. Based on the teachers adage of..... tell ‘em what we will be doing...... what we are
doing now .... what we have done ...the follow up with sending out the staged photos helps folk
recap their work and maybe give the projects another go in the future. Attached as an example, is
one of the paintings – “ Historic Steam Train near Echuca”. The participants got a series of shots of
each of the paintings we did.

NEWS FROM YOUR LIBRARY LOCKER
I hope that everyone has had a pleasant Xmas and New Year. lt has been rather quiet in the ASOC library
due to the long Xmas break. At monthly meetings our members are continuing to use the library’s facilities
and there has been a lot of borrowing of the DVD’s of late, so we may need to purchase more DVD’s in
future. Many thanks to those who have kindly donated items to the library and to those who have returned
their books on time. We have even had a couple of items returned that had been written off as missing, so
that was a pleasant surprise.
Lately I have been opening the library cupboards for the benefit of members of the workgroups I attend and
am looking into ways in which the main library may be able to be made more accessible to other workgroup
members. As I am not supposed to lift anything heavy, I would very much appreciate it if items were not
stacked in front of the library cupboards as I often need access to the cupboards in between meetings as
well as access to the power point by the door.
Unfortunately our copy of Plein Air with Pastel Vol 2 DVD has had to be withdrawn from the library due to
damage. If you borrow a DVD, please, please treat it with due care and ensure that after using it you place
it immediately into its case (securely clicked into place) so as to avoid damage. DVD’s are expensive items
and if we decide to replace it, the cost will be $30US plus shipping. A few new items are on order, including the new Acrylic Artist Magazine, but they are still in transit. I have been trying to improve our holding of
acrylic, mixed media, pastel and printmaking titles as we have far less of those than we do of some of the
other categories. For the immediate future I will not purchase any new books relating to watercolour techniques as we have over a full shelf of watercolour books and a number of DVD’s. If there is a book or DVD
that you think we should obtain for the library, please let me know about it.
I would like to do some chasing up and another stocktake in the near future and would ask that anyone
who has books outstanding, could they please return them to the February meeting or to the library returns
cupboard in the workroom. If, for any reason, you have an outstanding book and are unable to attend the
meetings or studio, please contact me on 0419826192 or [email protected] and I will be happy to
collect it from you. Remember too that it is a condition that library users must be current financial members
of ASOC and there appears to be a number of people with books outstanding who have not renewed their
membership.
All the best for the new year and enjoy your library.

THE ACT REGION CATCHMENT GROUPS ART PRIZES
Art Exhibition and Sale - April 12 – 18, 2015
Open Competition
Get the brushes, paints, inks, pencils and crayons working – over $3,000 to be won.
This is the third year in a collaboration between the major sponsor ACTEW Water, the Molonglo
Catchment Group, the Ginninderra Catchment Group, the Southern ACT Catchment Group and the
Artists Society of Canberra Inc, all under the banner of the Canberra and Region Heritage Festival. It is
also the 11th year of collaboration with the Molonglo Catchment Group.
Our combined objective is to raise awareness of the work undertaken by all of the local Catchment
Groups to improve sustainability and conserve the natural environment of the region. Artists help raise
awareness through their ‘themed’ artwork. Valuable cash prizes are awarded by the sponsors and all
artworks are for sale. The normal ASOC commission on sales will apply.
“Native Grasslands” is the theme for 2015.
LOOKING FOR IDEAS AND INSPIRATION:
The preservation of native grasslands is also essential to the preservation of many native animals.
An excellent exhibition of copyrighted photographs of grasslands is available at:
https://www.flickr.com/groups/seeinggrasslands/ and a map of remaining native grasslands in the ACT
is at: http://seeinggrasslands.wordpress.com. Importantly, “Seeing Grasslands” is also an introduction
to a book of the same title published by David Wong and Chris Holly in 2013 on the same site.
“Native Grasslands” has enabled us to develop relationships with the “Kosciuszko to Coast” partnership that is working to conserve native grasslands in its Kosiuszko Grasslands Project: http://k2c.org.au
and, in addition, with the Myer Foundation Grasslands Project see: http://myerfoundation.org.au/casestudies/sustainability-and-environmentcase-studiesaustralian-native-grasslands/.
For more information about what each of the Catchment Groups is doing please visit their websites:
<www.ginninderralandcare.org.au> <www.sactcg.org.au> and www.molonglocatchment.org.au>.
Don’t forget to get your entry form in by the due date of Sunday 15 March 2015. You may submit
multiple entries. Entry forms are on the Website (www.asoc.net.au), and printed copies will be available
at the Studio.
THE SUMMER ART EXPERIENCE – HISTORY PROJECT
The Summer Art Experience was the brainchild of our distinguished member David Hatton over fifteen
years ago, and the first summer school was held at the Orana Steiner School in Weston where David
taught. At least one of the participants at this year’s version of the SAE suggested he had been to every
one of these prestigious annual events.
I recently completed the digitisation of the Brochures produced for each of the SAE’s from 2004 to the
present. What I really need are any brochure-like materials concerning the SAE from its commencement in 2000 through to 2004. Does anyone have copies of the brochures used to attract participants to
these early “Experiences”. Any material, once digitised will be returned to the owners. Please contact me at
[email protected] or drop me a note in the studio mailbox.

HEART JOURNEY - 2 DAY CREATIVE MIXED MEDIUM WORKSHOP with Tracey Creighton
22 - 23 August 2015
The "Heart Journey" Workshop is about expressing yourself, your life, the people or things you
love in a creative way. If you already love to paint or would like to further explore the artist within,
then this workshop is perfect for you. Take this opportunity to be guided through the process of
developing your artistic skills with professional artists, Tracey Creighton.
The workshop is about embracing your creative self, making marks on canvas incorporating
symbolism, typography, calligraphy, photography, collage, and textiles. You need no experience in art making to undertake this workshop, you simply need a desire to open yourself to
new ideas without fear and launch yourself into a creative place.
Each participant will embark on their own very individual journey as we work through a series
of exercises and painting techniques. You may choose your own heart theme - self, family,
something or someone you love or just some aspect of your life. It's a journey of the heart, an
opportunity to express yourself. You will create and take home a unique and timeless work of
art. As an example here are a couple of themes:
10
Beach: You may love the beach and
therefore your painting may include an
ocean/beach scene, photos of people at
the beach, sea life or shells.
Family/Friends: You can choose one
family member or many to include in
your artwork. You don't have to paint
your family members as we use photos
of them collaged into your artwork.
Your pet: If you have a pet then perhaps this could be a theme you might
like to choose.
Day 1 starts with a series of painting
exercises and techniques, render
meaningful marks on paper/canvas,
including exploring typography,
calligraphy, collage and photography as
integral elements of your design. You
will be guided through preparing your
composition, selecting the elements to be included in your design and planning the order of
assembly of your painting. You may choose from a variety of techniques learnt on this day
which you may incorporate into your final work of art.
Day 2 will have you building and
layering your artwork with paint
washes, varnishes and textural embellishments. Your painting will start
taking shape as you add photos,
typographic elements, fibres and
collage.
Your final work of art will be an innovative painting which you will feel
proud to take home and display on
your wall.

HOME-MADE GESSO
I use a lot of gesso and, in a bid to cut down my costs, have been searching for an easy and cheap
way to make my own gesso. My aim is to make a gesso that is flexible and archivally sound. Looking
on line, the general consensus is that to make gesso you need some sort of binder and a toothy white
powder.
Recipe
This is the only recipe that I have tried (I have not listed my failures) and I found it works well on
canvas.
Ingredients:
1 litre good quality all-purpose undercoat primer (water based)
½ cup whiting*
Method:
Stir well. Paint two or three coats onto raw canvas, or one coat over pre-primed canvas. Allow to dry between coats. Store in an airtight container.
Note: this formula is thicker/ whiter than many commercial gesso mixes. Adjust amount of whiting, or
dilute with water to suit your purpose. Look to purchase packets of whiting powder at art suppliers,
lead lighting suppliers or hardware stores. Undercoat primer is available at hardware stores and paint
suppliers. I like to think that undercoat primer has been tested by the manufacturer for flexibility and
longevity.
*Whiting is ground limestone (calcium carbonate), ie chalk. Is grittiness depends on its purpose.

DONATIONS FROM TUTORS AT THE SAE
At the beginning of the SAE, the
famous Blue Mountains landscape artist
and tutor John Wilson presented ASOC
with a signed copy of his book: “The
Journey Continues”, published by
AusPress Marketing, Katoomba, NSW.
The book will shortly be available to all
members through our Library system.
As the SAE drew to a conclusion the outstanding and colourful artist De Gillett, who
has been a tutor with us for two years in a
row presented ASOC with one of her distinguished works completed at the SAE. De’s
desire is that ASOC use her painting in an
initiative to raise funds for the Society.
A big thank you from all of ASOC to both
of those tutor artists for their generosity
and support.
THE BASIC ART OF SALES
On Monday 16 March 2015 at 6.30pm Misty Henkel from Sales Motivation will be speaking on 'The
Basic Art of Sales' at the National Convention Centre Canberra. Tickets are $20 for 300 people.
This fun talk is about learning the little things you can do on a day to day basis to increase your exposure to the public. After all, the hardest part about sales is not selling, but being noticed amongst
everyone else.
It is fantastic for not-for-profits and artist because Misty will give you ideas on how to maximize ticket
sales and people to events, brand exposure, uncover missed hidden opportunities, highlight the things
you do to accidentally turn people away and of course put you in a room with many other businesses
and professionals who need to know who you are and what you do.
All bookings are through Misty Henkel. 0414849253. [email protected]
