March 5, 2015 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm Be a SUPERvisor to Child Counselors & Play Therapists The presenters will deconstruct the supervisory relationship, illustrating how experiential tools can expand the traditional didactic framework of supervision. Through instructive activities, participants will gain an understanding of the multiple and complex roles of the play therapy or child counseling supervisor. Participants will learn supervisory interventions that are specific to the unique challenges of child counselors and play therapists which strengthen and expand the processes of supervision, the practice of play therapy, and the personal growth of the supervisee. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: 1) Understand the rationale for the inclusion of experiential tools and techniques within play therapy or child counseling supervision. 2) Distinguish a minimum of three different supervisory roles and identify at least one experiential tool or technique that can be used within each role. 3) Explain the components of two experiential tools and techniques, providing an explanation of their use within supervision. She is credentialed as a Registered Play Therapist (RPT) and a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor (RPT-S) through the Association for Play Therapy. June is also a Child Centered Play Therapist (CCPT) and Child Centered Play Therapist Supervisor (CCPT-S) through the National Institute of Relationship Enhancement (NIRE). She has presented workshops throughout New York State on play therapy. June provides counseling, play therapy, and play therapy supervision at Integrative Counseling Services, PLLC. June has served as the Mental Health Consultant for Oswego County Head Start. She is also an adjunct instructor at SUNY Oswego, teaching graduate courses on several Play Therapy topics, including Play Therapy with Children in the Autism Spectrum. RPT-S is the Director of Integrative Counseling Services with several office locations in Central New York. She is on the faculty at SUNY Oswego in the Counseling & Psychological Services Department where she is the coordinator of the Graduate Certificate Program in Play Therapy and the Mental Health Counseling program. Dr. Mullen is a credentialed play therapist and play therapy supervisor. She is the author of several manuscripts on play therapy and supervision. Her books include “Counseling Children & Adolescents through Grief and Loss” (co-authored by Dr. Jody Fiorini) (2006), “Play Therapy Basic Training: A Guide to Learning & Living & the Child-Centered Play Therapy Philosophy” (2007), and ”Supervision can be Playful: Techniques for Child and Play Therapist Supervisors” (co-edited with Athena Drewes) (2008). “Child-Centered Play Therapy Workbook: A Self-Directed Guide for Professionals” (co-authored by June Rickli), (2014). Also co-authored by June Rickli, (2013), “How Play Therapists can Engage Parents & Professionals” (Rev. ed.); and with her family (2013), “Naughty No More: A workbook to help children make good decisions.”Dr. Mullen is on the editorial board for the International Journal of Play Therapy.
