TROPMET 2015 National Symposium on "WEATHER & CLIMATE EXTREMES" 15-18 February 2015 Technical Programme & Abstracts Organised by Indian Meteorological Society, New Delhi Hosted by Panjab University Chandigarh Indian Meteorological Society Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) Chandigarh Welcome Address Dear esteemed delegates, It gives me great pleasure in welcoming all the delegates coming from various parts of the globe to City Beautiful Chandigarh for TROPMET 2015: NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON “WEATHER & CLIMATE EXTREMES”. Climate, climatic changes and associated issues affecting all walks of our life occupy the centre stage today. Addressing these issues is no longer an option for us but an imperative mission for all of us. This symposium organized by Indian Meteorological Society (IMS) is an initiative focused towards knowledge sharing, critical thinking and formulating solutions to climate related issues. The symposium is being hosted by Indian Meteorological Society, Panjab University and Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment. We are delighted at the overwhelming response that this symposium has received from researchers within India and abroad. During four-day long symposium there will be 108 oral presentations, 87 poster presentations and 54 invited talks spread over 24 sessions. Apart from these, there will be 5 special talks, 9 plenary talks and industry presentations. This symposium will provide a unique opportunity to operational meteorologists, researchers, planners, hydrologists, agriculturists, disaster managers, instrumentation scientists and technology developers to exchange their views on the theme. Scholars from various fields will present their views and discuss on climate change with a focus on extremes, impacts of climate change on socio-economic sectors, urban environments, sensitive eco-systems and predictability of weather and climate extremes. I am sure that deliberations held during the symposium will go a long way in furthering the cause of research in the field of climate change with special focus on weather and climate extremes. On this occasion I humbly acknowledge the support extended by various government institutions, organizations and individuals in organizing this symposium. Sponsorship from private industry is also duly acknowledged. On behalf of organising committee, I wish all delegates a very pleasant and memorable stay at City Beautiful. A hearty welcome!
