A Framework For Consultation With
Schools about Challenging Students
Anne Gearity, Ph.D, LICSW
Many schools struggle to understand, and stay responsive
to, challenging students. Often educators become reactive,
and this exacerbates students’ behavior difficulties. The
current focus on changing suspension rates highlights the
need for improved support for teachers and students. This
presentation will address and examine components of an
educational model for mental health and introduce school
social workers to a framework that recognizes effects of
stress, values relationship continuity and helps educators to
stay curious about the purpose of behaviors so that learning
is active and possible.
Breakout Session #1 (Choose 1)
Breakout A: Building a Trauma Sensitive School
Kathy Lombardi, MSW, LICSW & Panel
Over the past two years, school social workers in St. Paul
Public Schools have worked to increase knowledge of
Trauma Informed Care and building a Trauma Sensitive
School. A panel of SSW’s will share information on the
Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) that SSWs
have participated in on trauma. The breakout session will
also provide a brief overview of trauma, it’s effect on
students and trauma informed responses. In addition to this
overview, participants will hear from a team of SSWs from
one school who will share the steps they are taking school
wide to build a more Trauma Sensitive School
Breakout B: Cultural Relevance & Evidence-Based
Interventions for LBGTQ Youth
Jenny Andersen, LGSW
This presentation strengthens cultural awareness in
working with LGBTQ youth and addresses the newest
evidence-based interventions in therapeutic work with
LGBTQ youth. This presentation is a great fit for the
professional who has some comfort with LGBTQ
individuals and needs more support in implementation of
appropriate group, agency and individual interventions.
Breakout C: ACES Study & Trauma Sensitivity 101
Mark Sander, Psy.D., L.P.
This presentation will discuss the impact of toxic stress and
adverse experiences on brain development as well as findings
from the ACEs study. Presenters will outline opportunities in
MN and will close with an interactive discussion with the
participants about next steps.

Breakout D: Must Knows For New School Social Workers
Nancy VanHorne, MSW, LICSW
This workshop will explore the many facets of being a K-12
licensed social worker. We wear many hats on a daily basis,
from crisis intervention to Response to Intervention. The role
of the School Social Worker is a vital component of the
school community. Ms. VanHorne will give an overview of
multiple areas that a new School Social Worker would need
to know about, as well as a student who may be exploring the
career of School Social Work. Time will be given for Q&A.
Breakout E: Restorative Practices: Training &
Implementation Resources
Nancy Riestenberg, BS
This workshop will provide participants with an overview of
restorative practices in schools for building relationships and
repairing harm: affective statements, the circle process and
restorative conversations and circles to repair harm.
Resources for implementation will be discussed, including a
facilitator’s tool kit, and implementation check list for using
Circles in the classroom and a guide on restorative practices
in schools training topics. Steps in implementation will be
discussed.
Breakout F: Systems Collaboration for Building
Resiliency in Court-placed Youth
Tom Delaney, Ed.S., M.A.T, L.S.P & Nicole Raske, B.S
This presentation will provide an overview of frameworks for
understanding adverse childhood experiences and trauma
frequently experienced by court placed youth, as well as for
promoting resiliency and success for these youth in school
and community. The potential role of special education in
promoting resiliency for court placed youth with disabilities
will be reviewed, as well as the role of court services. The
presentation will also propose ways special education and
court services can most effectively collaborate to promote
resiliency in court-placed youth.
