For Mike Brownback of Spiral
Path Farm in Perry County, scale has
just been an adventure.
Brownback started farming in the
mid-1970s on his grandmother’s
4-acre farm with a rototiller and some
steers.
His uncle, a livestock dealer, supplied him with a bred gilt that helped
him start a farrow-to-finish operation.
Brownback and his wife bought
their own farm in 1978. In two years,
they lost tens of thousands of dollars
and had to get an emergency loan
from the predecessor to the Farm Service Agency.
The Brownbacks stuck with pig
farming, and they improved their
finances. “The old terminology for
pigs was ‘mortgage lifters,’ ” Brownback said.
As the couple approached 40,
the pigs seemed increasingly like a
means to an end, so they switched to
a produce CSA.
They started with 22 members and
now serve 2,200, Brownback said.
Efficiency is a key to surviving as
a farmer no matter the scale. Brownback said that means using workers,
farm buildings and mechanization to
your advantage.

tunnel, he said, “we can harvest a boatload, and that’s a family operation.”
Brownback also emphasizes caring
for the soil. “Doesn’t matter what size
you are. You can still work on soil improvement,” he said.
New farmers generally have to
pay their dues in the tough wholesale market until they can build their
brand, Brownback said.
Now that he is established, Brownback said he only deals with buyers
who want a win-win relationship with
the farm.
At this point, land is a big limiting
factor for Spiral Path.
Most of the neighboring properties
came up for sale when Brownback
was younger, but he did not buy. “You
never think you can afford land unless you’re wealthy,” he said.
If there is an opportunity to buy
land, go for it, but try to avoid putting
up your existing farm as collateral, he
said.
