auditorium from 7-10 pm. Tickets cost $15
and will be sold prior to the dance. Proceeds
from this dance will go towards Special
Emphasis Week.

A reminder to all parents and students that
Friday, February 13 is a project day. While
this is a day away from school, it is not to be
considered a day “off” school. Students will
be working on assignments at home while
teachers are meeting together. This is an
excellent time for students to move forward
on longer term projects and to catch up on
homework. Information will be distributed
in class and posted to the teachers’ websites
at classes.woodland.on.ca.

Gr. 10 Literacy Test
2015-2016 Registration
The process of registration for
the 2015-2016 school year has
begun. Registration forms
for current students were
mailed home. Please return
these forms as soon as
possible. Please fill in,
sign, and submit a form
for each student in your family
by March 1. Registration forms for new
Grade 9 students and course calendars were
mailed at the beginning of the year. We
encourage all families with students who
will be joining us in grade 9 next year also
to return the enrolment forms before March
1. Please encourage Grade 8 students and
their parents to check out Woodland and
register early.
If you have any questions about the
registration process please contact the

Advancement Office.
Report Cards
First semester report cards were sent home
with your students last week on Friday.
This report includes term, exam/cumulative
activity, and final (composite) marks for all
semester I courses that ended in January. It
also includes a midterm update for all full
year courses. In some cases, where students
wrote a midterm exam, this mark is
included along with the current term
progress. Although we do not have regularly
scheduled parent-student-teacher
interviews at this time, you are encouraged
to contact any of the teachers if you would
like to meet to discuss your student's
achievement.

Special Emphasis Week (SEW)
Grade Ten Literacy Test
February 23-27
The EQAO Grade 10 Literacy Testing (OSSLT) will
take place on March 26, 2015. It is imperative that
your Grade 10 student be in attendance for that day,
as successful completion of the OSSLT is a
graduation requirement for all Ontario students.
The test consists of two sections of seventy-five
minutes each; including reading comprehension and
writing exercises. We will contact you if your student
is not in grade 10 but needs to write the test.
Students who are successful on the test will receive
their scores with the June report card. Those who are
unsuccessful will be required to take the
test a second time, next year.
Students who are absent the day of
the test will also be required to take
the test next year.

What is it?
A week set aside to promote awareness regarding
a specific topic or cause and to raise funds for a
special project.
What is the topic?
Chapels during SEW will explore the concept of
disability. We want to see people as
being differently-abled and valued for who they are,
without focusing on limitations. Our school verse:
"Do not let anyone look down on you" applies here
as well.
What is the Verse?
I Corinthians 12: 20-21
As it is, there are many parts but one body. The eye cannot say
to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the
feet, "I don't need you!" On the contrary, those parts that seem to
be weaker are indispensable.
What is the fund-raising focus?
The organization to receive the proceeds of SEW
is Christian Horizons Global, a local
organization that exists to provide spiritual,
educational, and economic support for individuals
with exceptional needs, who are often living in
poverty in a variety of developing countries around
the world.
Our Goal: To raise $4000 for Christian Horizons
Global. Our specific project focuses on Christian
Horizon Global's current work in Haiti.
What is our schedule?

Friday Feb 20 - Dance (proceeds to SEW)
SEW - February 23-27 including 3 special chapel

Introducing Chisel, Woodland’s New Arts
Magazine!
Chisel was born out of a desire for student writers and
students artists to be able to share their work with the
student body and the greater Woodland community,
developing their gifts and talents and, ultimately,
expressing truth and beauty through their craft.
The name of the magazine comes from a word that is a
noun and a verb. Both meanings are applicable: a tool
used for cutting and shaping (noun) or the act of cutting
or shaping something (verb). The writers and artists who
submit pieces to Chisel will cut and shape their work
until it is polished and complete. In turn, Chisel serves
as a tool, communicating ideas that will help shape and
challenge its readers.
Chisel is accepting submissions for its first publication
right now! Encourage your students to consider
submitting their writing or visual art. All written
submissions should be emailed to Mrs. Arthur as a Word
file; all artwork should be photographed and emailed as
a high resolution TIFF file.

Europe Trip
On Tuesday evening, March 5, over forty members of the
Woodland community will embark on a 10-day excursion
to France, Belgium and the Netherlands. This trip will
be an excellent reinforcement of our French and History
courses and will allow us to pay our respects, in person,
to those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom so
many years ago. Lest we forget. Bon Voyage!
Sports Update
The Senior Boys Basketball team is hitting its stride
at the right time. With two weeks to go until CWOSSA,
the Senior boys came away with the silver medal at the
annual OCSSAA tournament, only 5 minutes away from
having secured the gold medal. The boys are proud to
have swept Rockway this season and beaten Doyle once
in league play, and are looking forward to finishing the
season with strength.
Junior Girls Volleyball came to a disappointing yet
inspiring finish yesterday. Our last season game was
against St David's, ranked much higher than us and we
played stellar defence in an exciting take it to 5 finish.
The fact that we were able to take 2 games away from
this team, and we had them scared, shows the amazing
hard work that the girls were committed to executing.
Their setter was very strong and we were able to defend
and dig up whatever came our way. One major highlight
would be our 3rd place finish in the Guelph CVI
tournament, where once again, our defensive work,
coupled with strong attacks gave us 3rd place. This
season was filled with growth, a deepening
understanding of the game and heartbreak. The girls
should be very pleased with their performance. We have
one exhibition game next Thursday against St John's
Kilmarnock. Thank you parents for your support and
driving.
The Senior Girls Volleyball team is continuing to have
an excellent season. They are currently in 2nd place in
District 8 and are headed to the playoffs with a good shot
at qualifying for CWOSSA. They recently finished in 3rd
place out of 18 teams at the provincial Christian Schools
Championship in Belleville. This included a huge upset
victory over the top-ranked team from Quinte Christian,
in which the girls played their best ball of the season.
Way to go, Cavs!
The Junior Boys Basketball team had a successful end
to their season. In late January, they attended the Roger
Stover Classic tournament at Rockway. The boys had a
complete effort from the entire team. After dominant
wins against both Walkerton and Monsignor Doyle on
the first day of the tournament, the boys came within a
couple of baskets of upsetting St. Mary's (Owen Sound)
in an exciting game on Saturday. In the bronze medal
match against the Owen Sound Collegiate and
Vocational Institute, the OSCVI Falcons could not
manage the Cavs frantic defense, and the boys walked
away with a well earned bronze medal.
In their last game of the season, Woodland played a
tight game against Doyle. After being down 10 points in
the first quarter, using a tenacious press, the boys slowly
closed the gap and finally pulled ahead at the end of the
fourth quarter, holding on for a 4 point win.
Well done boys!
