During the month of February, as the nation celebrates Black History Month, Trinity UCC takes this time
to inform, educate and . . . remember, the Maafa. Derived from the Swahili work for “disaster, terrible
occurrence or great tragedy, “ Maafa was first introduced into the African American lexicon by Mirimba
Ani’s book Let the Circle Be Unbroken: The Implications of African Spirituality in the Diaspora.
Some academics, Maulana Karenga among them, prefer the term “African Holocaust” to describe the
horrible circumstance of the African slave trade because of the implications of intention, others favor
Maafa, because it speaks to the “continual, constant, complete, and total system of human negation and
nullification” inflicted on Africans and Africans in diaspora.

During the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, 90% of those enslaved were sent to the Caribbean or South
America
•
The Trans-Atlantic slave trade reduced the population of men in Africa by about 20%
•
Studies and analyses typically state that around 13 million slaves were shipped from Africa and
around 11 million arrived at ports throughout the Americans and Caribbean, but . . . While those
numbers indicated 2 million died in transit, that number is woefully low:
o “As many as 8 million Africans may have died, in order to bring 4 million slaves to the Caribbean
islands.” (Jan Rogozinski, A Brief History of the Caribbean)
o David Stannard, in American Holocaust, estimates that 30 to 60 million Africans died while being
enslaved
o Frederic Wertham clams that 150 million Africans died as a result of the slave trade
What does this death, disruption, and depopulation mean to Africa? The stripping of product labor, of
intellectual capacity and cohesive societies combined with colonialism to stifle potential and created
many of the structural challenges African continues to struggle with today!

Today's Music Guest
MC Lyte, Saul Williams, David Banner, The Cool Kids, KRSOne, Jean Grae and a host of other reknown performers,
poets and artists. In 2006, FM Supreme graduated from
The Chicago Academy for the Arts High School media arts
program. FM went to college for a year in Manhattan, New
York where she continued to develop herself as writer, poet,
and MC. In 2008, FM interned at Warner Brothers Records
NYC for the spring semester. She later returned home to
Chicago, determined to make a name for herself and labeled
her journey and mixtape, “The Beautiful Grind.” She has
independently released five projects in the past five years:
The Diary of a Mad Black Woman Mixtape (2005), Forever
Maroon EP (2006), Basik Gumbo (2007), The Beautiful Grind
Mixtape (2008), and The FM Supreme Project EP (2010). She has performed all over the
United States and briefly toured Europe, performing at clubs and venues in Amsterdam
and London.

Lenten Meditation
"imagine The Possibilities"
The season of Lent has begun. Does this news make a difference to you, as you think about
your life in the days ahead? If so, in what way? Is that good, bad or somewhere in between?
Probably, for most people it is not an exciting development. Others, though, find that this
season offers possibilities for deeply personal inner gains.
Our daily tasks, whether dull or exciting, are of crucial importance. We earn a living; we build a
loving home; we contribute to the life of our whole society. Doing this, though, requires some
basic orientation, some sense of overall purpose. What is it that gives wholeness to our lives?
Jesus' mission on earth seems to have been to enable us to live more creatively and
productively in accord with God's plan for us. As the messenger of God, he gave his disciples
and gives to us an orientation and strengthening that empower us. Perhaps, during Lent, we
can come to sense his presence more fully and grow in understanding.
Imagine the possibilities of a life where both joys and sorrows can be seen in the context of a
whole! Can we move beyond the fragmentation of our days to become more unified, more
purposeful both for ourselves and for those around us? If we will explore new horizons we
may see beautiful sights ahead.

LenTen MeDiTATion
Many people — perhaps you — have found that occasionally a few moments of quiet
meditation during a day can be helpful, calming, and restorative. Such times are a
psychological and spiritual rest, not unlike sitting down and resting after physical exercise.
Now, expand that picture! Rather than thinking of a few minutes during a day, think of a few
days — or weeks — during the year! What long-term renewal and refreshment might take
place? Can the Lenten season provide this for you?
Lenten Fast
Fasting for the Lenten Season
For 2015, as a church, we are being called to – Renew,
Reclaim, Restore, Reconnect – Renewing our
relationship with God, Reclaiming our African heritage,
Restoring justice and mercy, and Reconnecting to our
community. During this Lenten season, as we are
called to a church-wide fast, we should also be sure
to take advantage of our Reset cards each Sunday
for scriptural nuggets and a unifying prayer. Fasting
is a spiritual discipline designed to deepen our
relationship with Jesus Christ. We do not fast to lose
weight; we fast to be empowered by Jesus Christ. In
2015, as we seek to Renew our relationship with God,
God will reveal God’s purpose and plan in your life if
you dare fast, pray, study and learn the power of quiet
time. Jesus had to steal away from the crowd and
spend time with his Father in the mountains, to pray,
study, reflect, meditate, and center his spirit. If fasting
and prayer were the disciplines of Jesus, should not
this be followed by us? Join with us this season and
witness a breakthrough as we fast, pray, study, reflect,
meditate and learn the power of quiet time.
Question: i have never fasted before?
Answer: Consult your doctor first!* Fasting is not the
removal of all food from your diet. Fasting is learning
to discipline your mind, body and spirit to remove
“something” you know hinders your ability to function
at your highest capacity, from your life or diet.
Question: is fasting biblical?
Answer: Fasting is biblical. Throughout the Old and
New Testaments, fasting was used by the people
of God to prepare for a spiritual challenge, hear
God’s voice before making a major decision, and for
removing destructive forces in your life.
Fast #1 - Fasting to confront destructive forces
• February 18 – February 24
Eat all your meals before 6:00 p.m.
• February 25 – March 3
Eat only two meals before 6:00 p.m.
• March 4 – March 10 - Eat only one meal a
day before 6:00 p.m.
• March 11 – March 17
Drink only juices, water and/or tea

Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.
• March 25 – April 4
Slowly begin to add meat to your diet
Fast #2 – The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of
Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians,
he asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach,
Meshach and Abednego, could fast eating only fruits
and vegetables so they would be prepared to confront
the Babylonian king.
• February 18 – February 24
Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.
• February 25 –March 3
Eat only two meals a day before 6:00 p.m.
• March 4 – March 10
Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.
• March 11 – March 17
Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may
be added.
• March 18 – March 24
Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m., meat
may be added
• March 25 – April 4
Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m.
Fast #3 - Removing certain foods or items from your
diet or life. One type of fasting is to remove certain
foods from your diet, such as fried foods, sweets,
sodas or refined sugar and/or flour.
*Please seek the advice of your primary care provider/doctor before beginning a fast that involves restricting food/calories and/or medication. Your doctor can help you design a fasting plan that protects your health and well-being. This is extremely important if you are pregnant or have a medical condition. Medical condition examples include, but are not limited to those who have a chronic disease such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, recent surgery, etc.

Lenten Recipes
~ BLACk RiCe PiLAF WiTh kALe AnD ReD PePPeRS ~
Black rice, a Super Food, also known as Forbidden Rice or Emperor’s Rice, was once reserved for Chinese Royalty.
Loaded with anti-oxidants, minerals and fiber, it is a delicious alternative to brown or white rice. Know for its
distinctive nutty flavor, it is a wonderful paring with vegetables and/or healthy proteins. This is an excellent recipe
during the winter months when kale is still available and its dramatic appearance is sure to capture the attention
and the taste buds of those who partake. If you don’t have black rice, brown rice is a great substitute.
1 cup black rice
1 ¾ cup water or vegetable stock
2 teaspoons olive oil or coconut oil
½ cup diced red onions
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
3 garlic cloves, finely minced
1 red pepper, diced
1 bunch kale, trimmed and chopped
Salt and freshly ground pepper
¼ cup toasted pine nuts (see below)
¼ cup dried cherries
To toast pine nuts: Heat a small dry skillet over medium, low heat. Add pine nuts and
cook, stirring constantly until golden and fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes.
Serve and enjoy!
~ oveRniGhT CRoCkPoT oATMeAL ~
Recipes like this don’t get much easier. You literally put all of your ingredients into your slow cooker (crockpot) the
night before and go to bed. The next morning, a hot and healthy breakfast awaits for you. Try it without the maple
syrup. You’ll be surprised how tasty it is without the added sugar.
1 cup steel cut oats – Not to be confused with traditional oats or quick cooking oats.
1 cup dried fruit of choice or fresh apples (I prefer using fresh apples)
Raisins, dates, figs, cranberries, currants, cherries, etc. Chop when necessary, and use organic when ever possible.
Dried fruits have lots of pesticides if not organic. They are also high in sugar.
4 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup coconut milk*
½ teaspoon dried ginger
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
*This is not the sugary coconut milk used in tropical, mixed Dash of salt
drinks. This is the no sugar added coconut milk found in health Coconut oil or organic butter
food sections of traditional stores or at health food stores.
Maple syrup if desired
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup walnuts
In a slow cooker, combine all ingredients and set to low heat. Cover and let cook for 8 to 9 hours on. Add more
coconut milk if desired.

Make rice ahead of time. Usually 1 cup of dry rice for 2 cups of liquid. While rice is cooking, heat the olive oil in a
large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until translucent. Stir in red pepper and garlic and cook
several minutes more before adding kale. Continue cooking until kale is slightly wilted. Stir sautéed vegetables,
toasted pine nuts and cherries into cooked rice. Season with salt and pepper and serve.

Fasting, Prayer, and Fitness Challenge
As we begin our Journey to Resurrection, and the start of the
Lenten season, many of us have embarked on a personal journey
of prayer and fasting, and a renewed commitment to bible study,
fed by our Reset Bible classes.
This year, for the first time, our Trinity UCC family is being encouraged to also participate in a
Lenten Fasting, Prayer, and Fitness Challenge – Strengthening our Spirits, our Minds, and our
Bodies.
To encourage consistent participation, and to help you track your commitment, a log book has
been created. Within that booklet you will find weekly charts to track you daily progress. In
addition, Mrs. Monica Moss has provided an assortment of healthy recipes to provide us with
necessary nourishment, and also delight us with intriguing flavors.
The Trinity UCC Lenten Fasting , Prayer and Fitness Challenge log book is available from our Ushers,
at our reception desk and in our Akiba Book Store, along with our Lenten Devotions.

An oPen LeTTeR To oUR ChURCh FAMiLy
Trinity,
I distinctly remember calling Trinity just before 6 a.m. on May 4th, after Devin had survived a 5½ hour surgery;
by 6:20, there were 3 deacons at my side in the ICU waiting room - and the Trinity vigil began. Thanks in
large part to you, my Trinity family, blessedly, I was seldom alone. Your visits, prayers, love, and support
began that day and have carried us through an amputation, 12 additional surgeries, 2 weeks in the ICU, 51
days in the hospital, 6 months of outpatient rehab, 5 months in a wheelchair, and a return to our church; an
introduction to competitive wheelchair sports, and a return to school. Trinity, from RevOM3, himself, and
the rest of our amazing ministerial staff, to Mrs. Moss, to the deacons, to Isuthu, the Women’s Chorus, the
Voices of Trinity, the support staff, the Drama ministry, the Mime ministry, you have shown us compassion,
love, and exactly how much the prayers of the righteous do avail. For that, my Trinity family, I am grateful
and I thank you.
The outpouring of love and support never stopped. You brought food, flowers, lunch and dinner money,
clothes, necessities, more food, cards, and anything Devin asked for once he could eat; hugs, smiles, and
most importantly, yourselves. For that, my Trinity Family, I am grateful and I thank you.
I thank you for the outpouring of love the day Devin rolled to the altar in his wheelchair for the first time. I
thank you for praying for and over him. I thank you for the hundreds of hugs we have both received. I thank
you for the encouragement you have given him. I thank you for the supportive hands that reached to hold
mine, and I thank you for those of you who asked, “How is your son?”
I thank you for your reaction the first time he ministered with the mimes in his wheelchair. I thank you for
the calls, the cards, the texts, the emails, and the Facebook “likes” that confirmed you were a loyal member
of our village.
On every first Sunday, when a new member joins this branch of Zion, the Trinity members promise to walk
with them in Christian love and sympathy. Thanks to you, Trinity family, I will never again recite that phrase
without sincere gratitude that God directed me to this branch of Zion. I now know EXACTLY what Christian
love and sympathy looks and feels like. I see it and feel it when I look at all of you. May God bless each of
you as richly as you have blessed us.

Please forgive me: I have been remiss. February 3rd marked 9 months since my son, Devin, was shot. There
is more than a bit of irony in the fact that 9 months is also the amount of time God uses to create a new
person. In the past 9 months, in a manner of speaking, my son has become a new person. With God’s
mercy and your prayers and support, my Trinity family, not only has he survived, he has persevered, healed,
developed, exhibited incredible resilience, and become a young man for whom it seems undeniable that our
God has definite plans. For those constant prayers, for your love and for your support, please allow me to
say a much belated, but heartfelt, thank you!

The mission of the Trinity UCC Married Couples Ministry is to provide opportunities for
enrichment and strengthening of relationships between husbands and wives, as we serve
Christ, love the community, and honor our African American culture. To that end, we will join
hundreds of organizations around the country in celebrating Black Marriage Day, highlighting
and promoting marriage in the Black community. Since 2002, the goal of Black Marriage Day
has been to strengthen and celebrate marriage in African American communities from coast to
coast.
The 2014 Dinner Dance was so successful, we outgrew our space. We have chosen a different
location, conveniently located off I-80 at Harlem Avenue, in Tinley Park, Illinois. We have
also reserved a block of rooms at the adjoining Holiday Inn for $119 a night. Check-in time on
Saturday will be 4:00 pm. To reserve your room, call 708-444-1100, and mention the group
“TUC.”

the preacher. So that you may become a full-fledged member of Trinity United Church

2015 Black History Month
HBCU College Fair
Below are responses from Ariel Academy students who attended the Endeleo Institute’s HBCU College Fair
held Friday at the Historic South Shore Cultural Center:
Ella C: All the schools I visited include Tougaloo, Fisk, Spelman, Alabama, Morehouse, Chicago State and
City Colleges of Chicago. I also went to After School Matters. I got a backpack, two pens and a hug from
Ms. Aja. I was complimented because I knew about the white dress tradition at Spelman. I met new
and awesome people. I asked for a business card from Spelman. I felt professional. I was inspired to
maybe attend Spelman because of the way Melissa described her experience. I would improve on how
I approach people and try not to cut people off. I would recommend this trip because it’s a wonderful
experience and you have a great opportunity to network. To make it better, they could have bigger signs
or a map where everything is.
Fred C: The schools I visited were Tuskegee University, Clark Atlanta University and Rust College. One
positive thing that happened to me was when a lady from Tuskegee told me if I keep my 3.5 GPA I can
easily get a full ride scholarship to their school. I should have taken notes to make my experience better.
I would recommend this trip in the future because I might need an extra scholarship or a plan B school to
go to.

Ryan C: I visited Alabama A&M, Morgan State, Fisk, Morehouse and Alcorn State. At Alabama A&M I
asked if their tuition was different if you live in the state. The lady replied and said “Looks like you’ve been
doing your research. I felt like I impressed the woman! I enjoyed being welcomed by people that I knew.
It made me feel not so nervous. Also it made me feel like I was welcomed. I was inspired by this HBCU
College Fair. It inspired me to go to a HBCU, because those are the colleges made by my people.
