Te Kura o Rudolf Steiner Otautahi Christchurch Rudolf Steiner School Volume 41, Issue 03 Kawerongo Newsletter 24 Kohi-tātea 2015 19 Ombersley Tce, P O Box 19944, Christchurch 8241p: +64 3 337 0514 f: +64 3 337 0515 [email protected] www.ch.steiner.school.nz Last Sunday was the fourth anniversary of the tragic Canterbury earthquake. I’m sure we all paused at the 12.51 pm time where the earth shook us so violently both physically and emotionally. Our loving thoughts to those families who lost a loved one, our love and kia kaha to those still working through the aftermath of the day and please remember that the ‘new normal’ became finding ways to help each other out wherever we could. Don’t forget, or as Reinald Harmer wrote to me. “ if you want to feel good, do good”. If you had any doubts about the Upper school academic outcomes, the NCEA Level 2 results show what our teachers and students can achieve together. While the results are not totally official, the Level 2 is our best result ever! The students achieved an overall 96.6.% Level 2 pass!! which is 6% higher than the national decile 8 average!! - they achieved 10.7% excellences and 46.4 % merits. It’s fantastic by anyone’s standards and a great credit to the Upper School and the students. This exceeded our Strategic Plan aspirations and we look forward to this continuing and growing in their Level 3 year. Congratulations to the present class 12 students. Unfortunately our level 3 results are not looking so good this year and there is obviously quite a lot of self reflection occurring for that class – their UE results were down 30% on our previous years result. How cool is it having the NZ Opera Company perform at our school?! Yesterday everyone crowded into the hall to hear a 40 minute version of the Barber of Seville – a lightweight fun opera that even included some kapa haka and a local policeman. Thanks Angelika Hofmann for organising it – well done for a cultural afternoon. Big thanks to the Community Association for their Welcome Back BBQ last Thursday. Don’t forget: • Next week is the National Te Matatini festival – get down to Hagley Park to see the best of Aotearoa’s cultural festival. • Go to the Seasonal Produce link to get your excess produce to the cooking room and to each other. Your class teacher or secretary should have sent it to you. • Put on sun screen! The Upper School watched an excellent presentation last week by the Health Promotion Agency’s Sun Safety team, and everyone then had two photos taken – one regular and one that could photograph sun damage beneath the skin. The salutary message is that once you have sun damage, it is irreparable! • Review the screen time your child is having. It’s a more serious issue than we knew… see the link in last week’s newsletter to psychologist Dr Aric Segman’s report. • Go to Iron Ridge Quarry this weekend for their music and sculpture event. Raymond Herber is an ex-pupil and our Forging tutor. Celia Lashlie, the wonderful and tireless advocate for boys achievement, died last week. She was a woman that almost every educationalist admired for her practical, passionate desire for boys to grow into great men. If you haven’t read her books, find one and do so. It would be great to have a forum on how our boys in school are faring on their journey towards becoming wonderful young men. I see so many of these in our high school. Maybe it’s a topic for our student council forum. The initiator of Non Violent Communication, Marshall Rosenberg died last month. We use his methods in school in solving disputes. When a bullying perpetrator hears what it feels like to be bullied or hurt, it often leads to a deeper understanding and inevitably results in a longer and more enduring inner change. Mareile and Ashley are our most experienced practitioners, supported by Megan Rutherford. Continued over page Class 8 and 9 are away on camp this week at Okains Bay. Hope the weather fares them well and big thanks to Peter Oliver for the huge work to get them there. Sadly, our new Spanish teacher, Rosi, has had to reconsider her time with us due to some health issues. We are needing a new fabulous Spanish teacher.
