This week the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which also marks the
beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion appeal. This
year’s Project Compassion stories focus on the ways in which Caritas Australia
is working around the world to empower vulnerable people to establish
sustainable food sources and develop income streams for life.

Today we prepare for Lent again as another year rolls past. The cycles of the Catholic Church are an important opportunity for us to look at ourselves and our lives and how we have grown on our journey. The garden is a wonderful
place to mark this passage of time. Consider planting a tree this Easter and each year you can marvel at how it has
weathered the year. Think back to where you were this time last year, as the Easter eggs filled the shelves again in
the supermarket; how far have you come? How much have you grown as a person?
At CtK this year we are looking at growth rings. Each tree has a record of its life history, which is contained in annual
rings. The annual rings do not only show the age of the tree but they provide a detailed record of information about
the tree; what environmental conditions the tree has lived in and what it has gone through each year. Trees that live
in temperate conditions with continuous rainfall and temperatures do not develop clear growth rings whereas trees
that withstand dry spells and floods, fires and drought have very clear growth rings. When a person examines these
growth rings they can see what this tree has faced, and also how it has coped and grown during it’s lifetime.
As trees leave a record of their lives in their growth rings, so we leave a record of our life in our spiritual growth rings.
We each have distinct growth rings which show what kind of life we have lived. Sorrows and joys, times of Summer
and times of Winter. When God looks at us, he too can read our growth rings. The times when we have grown in
love and warmth, the times when we have battled in drought or cold. And he can see times we have flourished and
the times we have refused to grow.
In the same way, parents and teachers are the environment that our students will grow and thrive in. We strive not
only to make beautiful tree rings for ourselves but also for our students and our children. As teachers we are
blessed to watch our students blossom and grow, often from Prep through to upper primary and as they pass from
one set of teachers hands to another it gives us the opportunity to witness their growth from outside. This year we
have asked parents and children to set some goals for the year. What a great way to witness the growth and
achievement your child makes this year!
As we kick off another Lenten season and prepare to make promises, take time to reflect on the promises you made
last year – how did you go at keeping them? This continuous cycle of life gives us many opportunities to pick up the
Cross again and keep on trying to achieve the goals we set for ourselves in all facets of our life.
There is always hope for a tree:
If it is cut down, it will sprout again,
and its new shoots will not fail.
Its roots may grow old in the ground
and its stump die in the soil,
yet at the scent of water it will bud
and put forth shoots like a plant.

Tuesday 24th is our first Travel Choice morning for the year J ride, walk or park outside and walk in
through the gates to receive a gift from the Travel Choice team.
March is going to be a busy month as our tuckshop will reopen, we will be holding a RED food event,
school photos and an amazing disco. More details next newsletter. The new CtK menu will come home
next week.

GUITAR LESSONS
Guitar Exchange are offering CtK students guitar lessons for $25 per 1/2 hour.
The children have their lesson one day a week during school time.

DISTRICT SWIMMING, ROAR PROGRAM AND YEAR 5 & 6 SEMESTER 1 SPORT
Tomorrow I will accompany the following students to the Redcliffe District Swimming
Carnival tomorrow at Redcliffe Swimming pool. Charlotte Lazzam, Jamaal Hangan,
Rani Aquilina, Jack Rawnsley, Heath Dobbie, Allira Deen, Callum Lavell & Kayne
Horan. We wish our swimmers the best of luck!
Its not too late to register for the Brisbane ROAR program at the school on Friday afternoon 3:15-4:45pm. The Brisbane Roar coaches will be bringing the inflatable field for loads of fun. To

Semester 1 will see a new style of sport for our year 5 & 6 students. On a Friday afternoon, starting next
week, we will be coaching the children in soccer, netball and basketball and then playing in a competition
representing their houses Bribie, Straddie & Moreton. Following this competition, we will be compete in a
Gala Day in both soccer and netball against other catholic schools. We are excited about this new concept
and think the students will both enjoy & benefit from this format.

St Patrick’s College Bursary Opportunity

St Patrick’s College is currently seeking bursary applications for Catholic students entering Year 7 in 2016.
Bursaries are based on financial need and family circumstance rather than academic or sporting ability.
The bursary will be maintained for the duration of the
student’s education at the College and reviewed annually.
The purpose of the Bursary is to offer new students
whose families face financial hardship the opportunity
to experience the holistic education that St Patrick’s
College can offer.
Applications can be collected from the front office and
returned to the college by Thursday 2nd of April. You
will require 2 letters of support from a parent/guardian
and a letter from the student outlining why they would
like to be considered. Additional letters from parish
priests, current teacher or mentors are also encouraged.
Bursaries are awarded at the Principal’s discretion
and his decision is final.
