The Church uses forty days out of respect for the forty days that Jesus spent in prayer and fasting in the desert as He prepared for his public ministry. The forty days of Lent are a time of fasting, penance, prayer and almsgiving to help us ready ourselves for the solemn observance and celebration of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. The Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus is known as the Paschal Mystery. The Pascal Mystery is the reason that Jesus came into the world. Through this mystery Jesus demonstrated the unbelievable love that God has for the world. Nothing would ever or could ever stop God’s love for us. Even when we rejected Him, and ridiculed Him, and scourged Him, and spat at Him, and nailed Him to a cross, and ultimately killed Him, Jesus prayed “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” The season of Lent is the time when the Church helps all of us to turn our attention more to God. Let’s face it, we all could do more of that. We all get so busy with the business of life that we drift out of connection with God. During Lent the Church asks us to discipline ourselves by trying not to always surrender to the whims of our senses and desires. The Church asks us to fast in order to strengthen our will, enabling us to have better control and resistance, especially in the face of sinful temptation. The Church asks us to give alms, helping us to reach out beyond ourselves, to see the needs of others and assist them. The Church asks us to pray, to keep close communication, and to help keep us in tune with His will for us. The Church asks us to do penance, which in humility, we offer to God in thanksgiving for His goodness and mercy. The Church asks us to observe each Friday of Lent as a penitential day of abstinence. Abstinence means that we refrain from enjoying meals with meat, giving up that enjoyment out of respect for the day that Jesus gave up his life for us on the cross. Each Friday during Lent we will have the Stations of the Cross at 7:00pm. Also, to help keep the discipline of abstinence on Fridays, the Knights of Columbus are again hosting their annual Friday Lenten Dinner. The dinner will be in Bevan Hall each Friday from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Having the Lenten dinner and then coming to the Stations of the Cross would be an excellent way of keeping a Lenten Friday evening. I pray that this Lenten season will be a time of spiritual enrichment for everyone. Please do not allow this special time of grace pass you by. “These forty days of Lent, O Lord, with You we fast and pray; teach us to discipline our wills and follow Lord, your way.” Fr. FEBRUARY 22, 2015 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT - 9 LENTEN INFORMATION FAST & ABSTINENCE Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. Abstinence laws consider that meat comes from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep, or pigs — all of which live on land. Birds are also considered meat. Abstinence does not include soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted. Those that area excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting. — www.usccb.org Knights of Columbus - St. Jude Council 9102 Every Friday during Lent STATIONS OF THE CROSS ENGLISH Every Friday during Lent 7:00pm in the church 6:30pm in the church on March 6 only POLISH Every Wednesday during Lent 7:00pm in the church Including Good Friday 5:00pm - 7:00pm In Bevan Hall’s McFarland Room Menu: Tilapia fish, rice & veggies, assorted deserts and coffee. As we experience weakness and suffering during Lent, we should be renewed in our compassion for those who are hungry, suffering, or otherwise in need. The third part of the Lenten formula is alms giving. It’s about more than throwing a few extra dollars in the collection plate; it’s about reaching out to others and helping them without question as a way of sharing the experience of God’s unconditional love.
