The First Sunday in Lent

St Peter’s Cathedral is a Christ-centred, sacramental, inclusive, thinking, mission-oriented,
faith community. The Cathedral resides on the lands of the Kaurna people whom we acknowledge
as the original custodians of the Adelaide Region.
Welcome: A day or two after Ash Wednesday and Lent has
begun. With Jesus, we find ourselves driven by the Spirit into
the wilderness – the place of danger but also of God’s
providence and protection. How we use these coming weeks
is up to us. As we worship in our comfort and safety, pray for
those in real danger because of their faith, especially our
Coptic sisters and brothers in Egypt and elsewhere in the
Middle East.
Tonight sees the start of a series of sermons for Lent preached by members of
the Cathedral Chapter. Carefully chosen music, both choral and organ, invite
us into a time of reflection and prayer.

For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous,

in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in
prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the
days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight
people, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now
saves you—not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for
a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,

the only Son of God,

Community Notices
Cathedral Kids: Children of all ages, and parents, are welcome to join the
Cathedral Kids’ program during the 10:30am service in the Cynthia Poulton
Hall. Follow the Gospel procession down the aisle to the altar and then go to
the Cynthia Poulton Hall.
Children will be supervised by Marlene and Louise. Children are, of course,
also welcome to remain in the Cathedral with parents, or to use the children’s
area at the back on the left side of the Cathedral.
Toilets are in the Cathedral Close, across the car park from the Cathedral.
Hearing Aid: If you wear a hearing aid, please sit on the left side of the Cathedral
and set your aid to T position to make use of the audio loop.
Newcomers: Welcome to all who are new to St Peter’s Cathedral community. There
are a number of opportunities to help you into the Cathedral community –
Sunday morning tea/coffee following morning services, joining a home group
(meet monthly for dinner and conversation), a specific gathering of newcomers
to meet with the Dean and other Cathedral people on Sunday 1 March, 12noon.

Needlework Guild: Meet on Monday 23 February at 10am in the Office Meeting

Friends of the Cathedral Seek Secretary: As a result of Zena Chapman retiring
as part of the rotation of executive officers on the Friends Committee, we need a
new Secretary. Duties include taking and distributing meeting Minutes,
making event bookings and liaison with the Cathedral Office as well as general
assistance to the running of the Friends. Please see Gerald Varley or Zena
Chapman today.
Cathedral Organist: We look forward to welcoming our newly appointed
Cathedral Organist next Sunday. Dr Josh van Konkelenberg is no stranger to St
Peter’s Cathedral. He was himself an Organ Scholar under Dr David Swale and
served as Assistant Organist here in 2003/4.

with extra time to welcome visitors to the Cathedral to view the Bill Viola

Chewing the Facts - Monday 9 March from 3-5pm
Please join The Rev’d Dr Lynn Arnold AO and Professor Ernest Conradie as
they “Chew the Facts” in the Cynthia Poulton Hall on 9 March. Prof Ernst
Conradie, Professor of Religion & Theology at the University of the Western
Cape in South Africa and is also convenor of the steering committee for an
international research project entitled “Christian Faith and the Earth”.
City Home Group: The next meeting of the City Home Group will be at the home

Simnel Cake bakers: A quaint tradition associated with Mothering Sunday,

Recycling: Thank you to those of you who continue to drop off bottles, cans and
cartons for recycling and collection of the 10c deposit. Last calendar $750 was
collected. Let’s aim for $1,000 this year! For newcomers, there are two blue
bins located in the area between the office and the CP Hall.
All money collected goes towards funding projects supported by the Friends.
Advance Notice Cathedral Cleaning Bee: Saturday 28 March at 9.00am. Please

Autumn is on the horizon: Donations of 8 ply acrylic wool (any colour) would be
gratefully received and can be deposited in the “wool box” under the
Cathedral Shop desk. The wool is used to knit blankets for donation to
