SAINT LUKE CHURCH February 22, 2015 Welcome A warm welcome to all who gather in the name of Christ this morning. If you are looking for a church home, we hope you will consider Saint Luke. All baptized Christians are welcome at the Lord’s table. We all need what only Christ can give. For your convenience, there are large print copies of the Sunday bulletin and individual sound enhancement devices. The wheelchair accessible entrance is located on Greenview Avenue and the wheelchair accessible lavatory is off the left side of the church. A section for parents with very young children is located in the back of the church. Rocking chairs, floor cushions and children’s booster seats may be found in that area. In the very front of the church is a row of child-sized chairs for children who want to see the action up close. Parents may sit with them or in the pew behind. Church Activity Bags with books and coloring materials for the very young are available from the ushers. A closed circuit television carrying the service and a PreSchool play area is available to parents and children in a classroom (upstairs from church lobby) when attention spans have reached their limit. Free parking is available in the parking garage immediately west of the church. Enter from Melrose Street and park in any available space except those designated handicapped. Please let the ushers know if there is anything else they can do to assist your worship experience. Today SAINT LUKE CHURCH Lent 1 On this Sunday, the First Sunday in Lent, the 10:30 a.m. liturgy will look a little different. Instead of the usual entrance hymn, the congregation and service leaders will chant a litany as the leaders move in procession around the perimeter of the nave. This litany is a prayer in which we remember all sorts and conditions of humanity. It is chanted as the procession takes a new direction into the chancel to emphasize Lent as a spiritual journey in which we are encouraged to change our direction to walk the way of the cross. Second, beginning today and throughout all of Lent, the joyful Hymn of Praise “Glory to God in the Highest” is omitted. Third, the Alleluia is absent. It was “buried” on Shrove Tuesday and will not be sung until the announcement of the resurrection at the Easter Vigil when we again shout that ancient and joyful acclamation. Finally, our penitence and discipline are highlighted in an expanded Eucharistic prayer in which we pay special attention to the gifts God gives us in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. 3 SAINT LUKE CHURCH Sunday, February 22, 2015 First Sunday in Lent MORNING PRAYER THE FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT 8:30 AM PRAYER CONNECTION AND REFLECTION Time to reflect and pray individually as you prepare for worship THE PRAYER FOR THE DAY Holy God, heavenly Father, in the waters of the flood you saved the chosen, and in the wilderness of temptation you protected you Son from sin. Renew us in the gift of baptism. May your holy Angels be with us, that the wicked foe may have no power over us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen Psalmody Christ Jesus, Being in the Form of God Christ Jesus, being in the form of God, did not cling to his equality with God but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave. Bearing the human likeness, revealed in human shape, he humbled himself, in obedience accepting death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has raised him to the heights and bestowed on him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow— in heaven, on earth, and in the depths— and every tongue confess to the glory of God the Father that Jesus Christ is Lord. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. AS WE BEGIN THIS HOLY SEASON Almighty God, by our baptism into the death and resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ, you turn us from the old life of sin. Grant that we who are reborn to new life in him may live in righteousness and holiness, may be renewed each day and ever strive to follow in the way of your Son, through whom we pray. Amen. Where impossibilities close every door and window, grant imagination and resistance. Where distrust twists our thinking, grant healing and illumination. Where spirits are daunted and weakened, grant soaring wings and strengthened dreams. All these things we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 4 Spoken by all Sit Psalm 25:1-10 Spoken responsively To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The congregation may greet one another in the name of the Lord.
