Printed in the UK by The Manson Group. ISSN 1354-5396 COMMENT I n this issue we cover the exciting news that the world’s largest beverage canmakers have agreed the biggest ever deal in the industry. US-based Ball Corporation offered in February to buy UK-based Rexam plc for around (US$6.5bn) and Rexam recommended the offer to its shareholders. The deal would create a canmaking giant with annual sales of $15bn and 22,500 employees. With complementary manufacturing footprints, Ball makes around 67bn beverage cans a year and Rexam produces 62bn; and despite a combined market share in North America and Europe of 60 and 69 percent respectively, company executives played down the impact that antitrust regulatory issues could have. In Europe, their shares vary depending on the country. Rexam meanwhile revealed that it plans to pursue restructuring actions, including the closure of its Berlin plant in Germany, because it said it had become uncompetitive serving its core German, Benelux and Polish markets. There is still a long way to go, but having canmakers playing more MARCH ● THE CANMAKER © 2015 Sayers Publishing Group competitively in the drinks world has got to be a good objective. Ball also completed in February the acquisition of Sonoco’s closure facilities in the US for an undisclosed sum. With two plants at Canton, Ohio, Sonoco produces a range of steel and aluminium sanitary and easy-open ends for the food market. A lso in this issue, we report on the creation of an alternative supplier for beverage canmakers. German equipment manufacturer Schuler has set up a global service that offers complete beverage canmaking lines, and will be manufacturing Mitsubishi D&I bodymakers, dienecking machines and light testers under licence from Japanese canmaker Universal Can Corporation. Schuler has also invested in recruiting new teams of specialists drawn from across the industry and tells us how this year’s Cannex in Guangzhou, China, on 1-4 June, will be the perfect chance to introduce its team and show details of its machinery to the industry.
