Bear & Son Family
I
t all began in 1991 when Ken Griffey
and two partners bought the Parker
Edwards knife facility, a sister plant
to W. R. Case & Sons in Jacksonville,
Alabama, to create Bear MGC Cutlery. A
lot has happened since then to establish
Bear & Son Cutlery as a rising force in
the knife industry.
After a series of twists and turns,
including a time when the firm actually
was owned by Swiss Army Brands,
Ken Griffey still heads the operation
as President. His son Matt, who began
working in the factory when he was 18,
is Vice-President, as is Ken’s wife Sandy,
who has played a key role as VicePresident of purchasing and premium
department.
With their supervisors and management
team, they bring a combined knife
experience of more than 310 years,
including positions with Gerber, Case,
Parker Edwards and Schrade. They head

emington® Cutlery was first
established in 1920. In February
knife production began at
Remington® Cutlery in Bridgeport, CT.
by artisans brought over from Sheffield
England. These artisans brought over
with them the knowledge and creativity
to produce what was then the bestselling
line in the country. After more than a two
year discussion and planning to begin
the work, Remington® produces its first
knife, the R-103 Jack knife. By June of the
same year more than 6,000 Remington®
pocketknives were being shipped per
month. In May 1921 Remington® sales

a skilled team of 91 knife craftsmen.
As Americans become more and more
concerned about jobs lost to overseas
sources, they resent it when they see
the words “Made in China” on a product.
And they have less confidence in the
quality and reliability – especially if it’s
a knife.
Bear & Son Cutlery meets the test
because 100% of their high-quality
knives are made in their state-of-the-art
Jacksonville, Alabama plant, where they
do all their own tooling, pressing, heattreating, grinding, hafting, finishing and
assembly.
“Our fundamental position is clear and
absolute: we make high-quality knives,
and we make them all right here in the
U.S.A.,” said Ken Griffey. “And when
we say Made in America, we mean
everything. We’re a family company, and
we are dedicated to keeping it exactly
that way.”
With a wide range of knives – from big
Bowies to popular Butterflies – Bear &
Son covers almost every knife need.
Their Bear OPS Division, launched in
2011, features a growing line of rugged
tactical/survival knives.
While the Bear company began in 1991,
for Ken Griffey you could say it actually
began in 1976, when he went to work
for Parker Cutlery, then a Tennessee
knife distributor; or in 1986 when Parker
USA started producing Damascus and
stainless steel blades in Jacksonville.
Matt says he’s been around knives as
long as he can remember. From the time
he was 4 until he was 10, his mother
Sandy engraved blades in their home.
And he began working in the factory
while still in school.
Clearly, a family business that insists on
top quality knives and is dedicated to
America.

begin taking orders through hardware
jobbers. This was the beginning of one,
if not the largest, knife manufacturing
operations in this country. It lasted until
1940 when Remington® sold their entire
knife operations to Pal Cutlery Co. At
their peak they were making 10,000
knives every working day. Pal Cutlery
Co. made their last knives in 1950 and
immediately began to dismantle the
manufacturing plant; thus ended the last
of Remington’s knife venture….until 1982.
The Remington® Cutlery machines lay
dormant until 1982 when Remington®
needed a way to promote a new rifle that
the firearms department was launching.
Thus the reinstated collectible Bullet®
Knife. From then until now Remington®
has produced a Bullet® Knife each year.
We are proud to say that Bear & Son
Cutlery has the exclusive licensing
agreement to manufacture Remington®
Cutlery. In the short few months we
have doubled the USA knife selection for
Remington® and are working on more
NEW and exciting items now. We have
already started to make more of this
line in the USA at Bear & Son Cutlery in
Jacksonville, AL.

440 Stainless Steel with our own formula.
Facts: Rust Resistant, Holds an Edge well, diamond or ceramic sharpener
recommended due to the metal Hardness.
1095 Carbon Steel:
Steel loved by so many for so many generations.
Facts: Holds a keen edge, very easy to sharpen, requires a light coat of oil
to prevent rusting, stone sharpener is recommended.
High Definition 416 Layer Damascus Steel:
A true steel of beauty. Forging 2 types of Carbon steel with a nickel silver
layer to make one great looking blade.
Facts: Great edge retention, secret sharpness (Damascus never feels as
sharp to the touch), very easy to sharpen, requires a light coat of oil to
prevent rusting, stone sharpener is recommended.
Sandvik 12C27M Stainless Steel:

blades. Damascus steel combines steels
of different properties and produces
blades with extraordinary toughness and
edge-holding ability. Known as the Steel
of the Ancients, Damascus knives and
swords have lived in legend since the
creation of Damascus steel nearly 2,000
years ago. The ancient city of Damascus
was one of the centers of production of
this steel. That, combined with the fact
that the steel resembled the damask
cloth which was being produced in the
city of Damascus- both having a “watermarked” pattern- gave this steel its name.
Viewed under a microscope, the cutting
edge of a Damascus blade displays tiny
saw-tooth carbides which are formed by
forging in a coal fire. This enables the
blade to cut even when it feels dull to the
touch. Flexibility is superb. Every piece of
Damascus is as unique as a thumb print.
When ground on an angle, as in a blade,
