BAR STOOLS: What style, finish, size?
The popularity of having an
island in the kitchen, or pull-up
eating bar has made bar stools
one of the most sought after
pieces of furniture. They have
become as common as the table
and chairs. However, there is a
wide variety of qualities, heights
and styles to choose from,
making your selection much
more involved.
HYDRAULIC: Hydraulic
stools are great, because you
can adjust the height of the
stool to accommodate either
a 36” counter top, or a raised
42” counter height. (Some will
even lower to an 18” height
so that you can use them for
extra seating around your
table.) They are typically more
contemporary looking than
some of the other stools on the
market, as their base is usually
in a metal material. However,
watch out for inexpensive
options that don’t have a heavy
base, and can tip or rock easily.
These become a safety hazard.
They also have mechanical
parts, which can break making
the stool unusable.
SWIVEL: Some swivel
stools have a stationary
leg, but swivel seat. These
are great for a centre island
where you may want to
easily turn from the kitchen,
to the view, to the family
room. They seem to be more
limited in style choices.
The typical heights for
stools are 24”-26” seat
height for a standard kitchen
counter, or 30” to 32” for a
raised bar height counter.
