One time planning
Sector 15 Belapur will be the first to be developed
on the lines; ` 39 crores to be spent
By Vijay Bhor
CBD-BELAPUR:
“’One time planning’
is a unique concept
which is being implemented in Sector – 15
Belapur. The roads,
pavements and
gutters are being
relaid and ‘re-developed’ at a cost of Rs 39
crores. The emphasis
however will be on
completing the
ongoing projects before
taking up new ones,”
said municipal
Commissioner Dinesh
Waghmare on Tuesday. “This sector
hotels, corporate
offices and big real
housing important
institutions like
estate firms is in need
of up-gradation,” he
added.
He expressed
satisfaction at the fact
that the last budget
had made a provision
for funds for undertaking the project.
“The sector is being
developed to be a
model for the development of other sectors,”
he explained. “It will
be replicated in other
sectors if it is found to
be successful here.”

Demand to transfer the
CIDCO security guards to
Raigad security guards unit
By Umesh Parida
PANVEL: Playing the
political game to increase the voter base,
the Panvel MLA Prashant Thakur had recently demanded that
the security guards of
City and Industrial Development Corporation
should be kept under
the Raigad Security
Guards unit. Further,
a meeting should be
convened to address
their long pending demands and clear their
dues, he
added.
He cited
that those
appointed
as security
guards in
various offices of CIDCO in the
Raigad district are the
project affected persons. The CIDCO
should merge these security guards status as
it is with the Raigad
Security Guards unit that too without any
changes in to their payment and other status.
The CIDCO has appointed these security
guards through private
agency.
He also said that as
these security guards
are employed through
private agencies the
CIDCO has no responsibility and hence
many are facing the issues of delay in payment of their gratuity,
provident fund, leave,
etc. Though these issues are long delayed
new agencies are appointed by CIDCO. The
Maharashtra Kamgar
Association has threatened CIDCO to resolve
the issue fast or else
protests will be organized.
The Panvel MLA
has called a meeting of
the CIDCO administration with the Raigad
Suraksha Mandal head
Sham Joshi, CIDCO
special police officer
cum chief vigilance officer Pradnya Sarvade
and representatives
from Kamgar union to
resolve the issues.

A gift of blood can never be manufactured, it

It is known that if

Do we really need Lent?
As shared with Dinesh Kamath by Dr. Jayakar A Ellis who is the Editor The Christian Observer, a privately run Christian Newspaper since 2000,
General Secretary - National Christian Council & National Director of
International Human Rights Organisation
Lent is a time of
soul-searching and repentance in preparation
for the celebration of
Christ’s death and resurrection on Good Friday and Easter. Lent
consists of the 40 days
before Easter, not
counting Sundays. The
first day of Lent is Ash
Wednesday.
Is Lent Biblical?
When someone asks
“Is Lent biblical?,” the
answer depends on
what you mean by “biblical.” If you mean
“Does the Bible specifically require Christians
to practice Lent?,” then
the answer is “no.” Of
course in that sense of
the term, customs such
as church choirs or
Sunday school would
also be “not biblical.”
But if you mean “Is the
practice of Lent founded on biblical principles,” then the answer
is certainly “yes.” The
three main practices of
Lent from ancient
times have been (1) reflection on the significance of Christ’s death
along with prayers of
repentance and confession, (2) fasting as a
means to focus more
wholly on God, and (3)
giving to assist the
Dr. Jayakar A Ellis
poor. All of these are
very biblical practices.
We are not required to
do them specifically
during the 40 days prior to Easter, but we can
benefit adopting some
of the customs of earlier generations of Christians all the way back
to the 2nd century.
At this point I
should also make it
clear that Lenten practices, like any spiritual
disciplines, do not
make us acceptable to
God. We are acceptable
to God only through
coming to Him by faith
on the basis of Christ’s
death on the cross for
our sins (Eph. 2:8-9).
Spiritual disciplines are
means through which
God works in our lives
helping us to grow to
spiritual maturity,
which is being conformed to the character
of Christ (Eph. 4:13;
Rom. 8:29). Thus, these
practices are for our
benefit, and not a way
to “earn” anything from
God. Sometimes Christians in earlier generations lost sight of this
fact.
How to practice Lent
We should view the
season of Lent as an
opportunity to reflect
on the significance of
Christ’s death, examine
our hearts, and confess
our sins. It can be a
time of spiritual cleansing and renewal. It is
not a “law” that we
must follow, and there
is a great variety of
practices that we can
try out. Based on the
historic practice of
Lent, try doing something in each of these
three categories:
Fasting
Give up something
for God. Fasting is not
a means to “earn”
something from God,
but rather a way to
learn to curb your appetites and focus more
completely on God.
There are many varieties of fasting, and I do
not have the space to
discuss this important
topic here.

Honesty will win
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is a man in a hurry.
Aam Aadmi Party’s demand for full statehood, if accepted,
would give the Delhi government control over two critical
areas of governance, land and the police. Kejriwal has already broached the subject with Prime Minister Narendra
Modi, who has been non-committal.
Now, with 67 MLAs in a 70-seat Assembly, Kejriwal
should have no problem pushing Lokpal Bill through but,
after that, it will require ratification by the Centre. How that
turns out depends on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s disposition.
In governance terms, what can Kejriwal do without getting full statehood? He may be able to reduce electricity
and water tariffs, but will remain dependent on neighbouring States and the Centre for supply. He may also be able to
fulfil his promises on education if funds are forthcoming, and
certainly he can make a difference in reducing everyday
corruption.
Kejriwal must demonstrate that his is a government with
a difference. He should take transparent steps to unveil a
governance structure emphasising accountability and accessibility.
AAP’s sweeping victory over BJP came at the cost of all
other traditional parties. If AAP manages to govern Delhi
most efficiently that it will not be difficult to see AAP repeating its Delhi performance elsewhere in the country. Congress situation today must serve as a lesson to these parties in the country, that they can’t forever bank on the family name.
The new CM of Delhi has to tread his path carefully. The
announcment of free water and subsidised electricity for the
people of Delhi though, it is quite a welcome move, but has
its serious repurcussions on financial health. As of now, Delhi
depends mainly on its neighbouring state for water and electricity. The city needs to build up enough infrastrucutre in
the peripherals in saving and storing of run off water during
rainy season. City has to explore the bright prospects avaialble for harnessing solar energy. Individuals should be
encourage to install more number of solar panels to meet
their domestic requirements thereby to reduce burden on
electricity. In all, it is advisable for AAP to go slow on matters involving financial aspects.
AAP should be extremely careful of the mainstream political parties (BJP and Congress), which are too strong (in
terms of money, power, beaurocracy and influence) and which
will do anything and everything to dismantle AAP. It is for
AAP to stand solid like a rock and face the storms. Honesty
will win!
The confidence the people of Delhi has reposed in Kejriwal is paramount and if his government succeeds in reducing corruption, effect economy, control electricity thefts and
expanding the medical, education, water supply infrastructure, it will be a big relief. Rome was not built in a day. Delhites should have patience and watch. At present the man
on the wheel is honest and possesses integrity to do welfare of the people.
The Arvind Kejriwal era has begun. Now is the time to
make a difference for the aam aadmi and the aam aurat. The
AAP must make good its ambitious promises to reform the
decaying education and health systems, to introduce the anticorruption legislation, and ensure people-friendly delivery
of public services. With umpteen promises to keep in Delhi, and the rest watching his politics with anticipation and
hope, Arvind Kejriwal must act wisely and courageously.

Marvelous Win
Adelaide Oval
Congrats to Dhoni and his spirited team on
sculpting a marvelous win over arch rival
Pakistan on Sunday night.
Kholi, Raina and Dhawan played brilliantly to score more than
Pakistanis’ total. Our fielding and bowling also seemed lot better. Our
team should should not be complacent with this victory against Pakistan. It has a long way to go. It should play with the same passion and
determination and try to score more than 300 runs in each game. Then
only our bowlers will have enough room for containing the opponent.
And I wish our team continued success in the remaining matches.

The subway meant for pedestrians
used by vehicles
The subway near Rabale railway station is used by vehicles only.
Pedestrians don’t use this subway though it is meant for pedestrians
also. The subway is narrow and without any footpaths. Also, there is a
curve (turn) at both ends of the subway. So, the subway is not safe for
pedestrians. I have seen many people crossing the railway tracks at
this place.
The skywalk which is close to the subway and which connects other
side of Thane-Belapur road with Rabale station should be extended to
other side of the station. This will prevent pedestrians crossing the
tracks to some extent. Otherwise, authorities should broaden the
subway (if it is possible) and provide footpaths on both the sides for
pedestrian use.

A slaughter-house in Navi Mumbai
One of the 36 agreements signed between the Narendra Modi led
BJP government and the visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin
during the latter’s state visit recently, pertains to the exports of beef to
Russia. It may be noted that Russia has a huge demand for beef most of
which is met from imports. Neighbouring Pakistan and Israel are
among the major suppliers of meat to Russia. How these countries
acquire their ‘raw material’ for producing meat viz. the livestock is
interesting to note.
It is a little known fact that there is a regular trade in livestock
across Gujarat/Rajastan border with Pakistan. Hordes of cows, bulls
and buffallows are driven over long distances to Haji Pir on the Rann of
Kutch where is taken across to Pakistan by boat. There is a well
equipped jetty to facilitate the transportation. Incidentally, this illegal
trade is taking place with the knowledge, rather connivance of both
India and Pakistan governments.
Israel imports large quantities of livestock from India. This is a
legal transaction and the ‘cargo’ is shipped from Kandla port and is
done with license from the government. Who doesn’t know that the
livestock is meant for slaughter? In fact, Israel has a flourishing meat
industry. These industrial houses separate meat and other animal
parts like hides and bones each one of which has a commercial value. It
then re-exports these products to various countries.
That brings us to the issue of the construction of a slaughter house
in Navi Mumbai. CIDCO has allotted three plots, one after the other,
for setting up one. But every time, it was opposed by the general body of
NMMC on one excuse or the other. The last plot was in MIDC industrial area and one thought that no one will have any objection to the
same. But that was not to be. The elected representatives continued to
oppose it. In fact, the general body sought to put a lid on the issue by
passing a resolution opposing the project recently. We demand that the
issue be re-opened. Incidentally, I do not consider it as a religious issue
but an economic one. A slaughter house will provide employment to a
large number of people; it also has the potential for earning good
amount of foreign exchange from meat exports. If the government is not
squeamish about exporting livestock as mentioned above, I can’t
understand why it should oppose the construction of a slaughter house.
If there could be a slaughter house in Govandi, why not one in Navi
Mumbai?

to others?
There’s absolutely
nothing wrong with setting aside some time to
focus on Jesus’ death
and resurrection. However, repenting of sin is
something we should
be doing every day of
the year, not just for the
46 days of Lent.
If a Christian wishes to observe Lent, he is
free to do so. The key is
to focus on repenting of
sin and consecrating
oneself to God. Lent
should not be a time of
boasting of one’s sacrifice
or trying to earn God’s
favor or increasing His
love. God’s love for us
