Anticipating Spring
Saturday, January 24, 2015 | 1 - 3pm
Zand Education Center | $10/$5 members
Winter is the time to properly prepare yourself
for the upcoming gardening season. From
sourcing plants and sowing seed to sharpening
tools and prioritizing your goals for the year, this
program provides the tips you’ll need to hit the
ground running this spring. Participants receive
a take-home checklist and answers to frequently
asked questions.
Grafting the Right Way
Saturday, January 31, 2015 | 8:30am - noon
Zand Education Center | $40/$30 members
In this hands-on workshop, The Arboretum’s
propagator instructs participants on the art and
science of grafting to ensure future success in
reproducing plants at home. Rootstock and scion
wood are provided; attendees may bring their
own scion wood. Participants take home their
own grafted material to nurture. This workshop
is appropriate for age 14 and above. Children
must be supervised by an adult.
Tap Your Trees
Saturday, January 31, 2015 | 9am - noon
Visitors Center | $15/$10 members
Whether you’re a backyard gardener, woodlot
owner or simply have a sweet tooth, join the
Granville Kiwanis, syrup producers since 1971,
to learn the entire process of making delicious
maple syrup. This interactive class teaches
techniques for tapping trees; discusses collection,
storage and cooking methods; and explores kits
Landscape Design Certification
and common household items that are used in
maple syruping. Participants receive a discount
(25% members/15% non-members) on syruping
supplies at Daweswood Gifts and take home
reference materials.
Stone Troughs for the Garden
Saturday, February 7, 2015 | 1 - 3pm
Zand Education Center | $35/$25 members
Create an elegant stone trough called “hypertufa.”
Mix the ingredients, sculpt a trough over an
interesting form and learn how to choose the
right plants for your new container. A great
program to help brighten your landscape this
spring.
Basics of Fruit Tree Pruning
Saturday, February 21, 2015 | 10am - noon | off-site
$15/$10 members | registration deadline Feb. 19
Are you anticipating spring? Break up the
monotony of waiting with an excursion to Ochs
Fruit Farm in Lancaster, Ohio (participants
provide their own transportation—carpool
with a friend!). Learn the basics of fruit tree
pruning from an industry expert. The best time
to prune most fruit trees is early spring, before
the leaves appear. This class includes a short
indoor introduction, then proceeds to outdoor
hands-on activity in an orchard. Participants are
encouraged to bring gloves and boots, and hand
shears and loppers if possible. Driving directions
are provided. Please be sure to provide accurate
contact information (email/phone) when you
register.
Saturday, February 28, 2015 | 2 - 4pm
Zand Education Center | $60/$50 members
In this four-part series, learn from an expert
and uncover the secrets to planning and
implementing landscape designs around your
home. The Arboretum’s Director of Landscape
Operations guides participants through the
fundamentals of landscape design, and provides
useful advice with hands-on experience. Once
completed, participants will have the knowledge
and skill to readily craft their own outdoor spaces.
Additional meeting dates are March 14, 28 and
April 11, 2015.
Rejuvenation Pruning
Materials for the course include one tree, bonsai
container, planting material, wire and an Art of
Bonsai booklet. Part two of this class meets on
April 18, 2015.
Gardening Through the Seasons:
Waking Up the Garden
Saturday, April 18, 2015 | 1 - 3pm | Visitors Center
$10/$5 members
Learn tips and tricks for tackling tasks that are
important at the start of spring. Come away with
knowledge, confidence and a handy checklist of
jobs to be completed to keep your garden looking
its best throughout the growing season. Dress for
the outdoors.
Saturday, April 4, 2015 | 1 - 3:30pm | Visitors Center
$25/$20 members
As a deciduous shrub ages, more energy goes into
supporting the older, woody stems and less into
producing flowers and fruit, which reduces the
shrub’s ornamental appearance. By performing
rejuvenation pruning in early spring, vigorous
new branches are encouraged, resulting in
increased production of flowers and fruit, as well
as getting rid of that “leggy” look. Learn methods
of when, where and how to prune and also how
to recognize a shrub’s particular pruning category.
Beginning Bonsai Series
Maple Syrup Madness
at The Dawes Arboretum
Saturday, April 11, 2015 | 9am - noon
Zand Education Center | $45/$35 members
February 21 - March 8, 2015
10am - 4pm | Sundays, 1 - 4pm
This two-session course introduces participants to
the art of bonsai. The first session leads students
through the history of bonsai, types of plants
to use, containers, bonsai soil and tools needed
along with how to prune and style a tree. During
the second session, each student plants a tree
in a bonsai container to take home to nurture.
It’s time for the sugar maples to be tapped and visitors to
indulge in the sugary goodness of maple syrup! Discover
how sap is collected and processed on the self-guided
trail. End your journey at the Log Cabin where all are
given a delicious sample of homemade syrup. Free Public
Tours at 2pm on Saturdays. Call to schedule a group tour!

Resources staff will aid visitors in spotting
salamanders. A headlamp with a red lens, or a
flashlight covered in red cellophane will help you
view these fascinating critters.

activity all summer long. While they don’t often
visit feeders, they are a great prospect for nest
boxes. In this workshop, learn the dos and dont’s
of box construction and build one to take home.
Bluebird life history and the ways Arboretum
staff and volunteers support and monitor their
population are also part of the discussion.
