Distinguished Service
Award
Presented to Bob Curtis,
CSOTFA Treasurer by Patrick
DeLuca, Past President
CSOTFA
The CSOTFA Board of Directors, at
its meeting on August 30, 2014,
nominated and approved the selection of Anita Marley as the recipient of the 2015 Huffman Service
Award. Anita is a member of CSOTFA District 9, and has served
at all levels, volunteering her time and expertise in many areas.
She is an accomplished fiddler, having won many fiddle contests.
She has also served as a fiddle contest judge on numerous occasions. Her most recent position was that of the editor of the
CSOTFA newsletter, The Soundpost. This entailed compiling the
information sent to her from the Districts; writing interesting articles; formatting the publication; getting it to the printer; and finally, distributing it to the Districts via both email and US mail. It
is with great pleasure and hearty thanks that we present this award
to Anita Marley.

The State Board of
Directors and the
State Contest Committee wish to express their thanks and appreciation to Tex Ash and Sharon Barrett for their contributions to the CSOTFA. In 2013, they were the proud recipients of the Huffman
Service Award. Tex is past president and current Director of District 6. Sharon is
the current CSOTFA president. Together, they are the chairmen of the Western Open Fiddle Championships, celebrating its 33rd year this coming October. Tex has kept the State Contests running smoothly from his stage MC position for over 30 years! And with Sharon by his side to keep him on track,
they have made the contests very enjoyable for contestants and audiences
alike. Tex’s emcee career with the fiddlers began at the California State Contest in 1982 and has encompassed many contests in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Colorado. Tex spends his “free” time with his favorite pursuits— playing music with Rich Reynolds, Pat Scott, and Becky Huskey in the
band, Loosely Strung—and generally spoiling Sharon to the best of his ability!

Laura Hightower
Mark Hogan
Pat Scott
Laura Hightower has played the fiddle for over 20 years, while also
being trained as a classical violinist. She earned a Music Minor degree from Brigham Young University, where she was selected to
play for the world renowned International Folk Dance Ensemble
and Chamber Orchestra. She is a past Colorado and California
State Young Adult champion. Over the years she has had to opportunity to be under the master tutelage of Denice Carter, Dick and
Lisa Barrett, Wes Westmorland, and Jim “Texas Shorty” Chancellor. Laura is a Registered Nurse and Lactation Consultant living in
San Francisco with her husband, Brandon, and two sons, Landon
(3) and Bradley (1).
Mark Hogan began playing banjo at age 17 right after high school. He
has attended the California State Old-Time Fiddle Championships off and
on since 1971. Mark played in the Bay Area bluegrass band “Done Gone”
for seven years beginning in 1976. Mark is a driving force in preserving
our Musical Heritage by re-creating the CSOTFA District 10 and is its
Membership Chairperson. Currently Mark is serving as a member of the
board of directors of both the California Bluegrass Association and Sonoma County Folk Society. Mark is the Program Director for the Cloverdale Oldtime Fiddle Festival and is celebrating his 14 th year as the Event
Director of the Sonoma County Bluegrass and Folk Festival. Mark
teaches beginning banjo at Peoples Music in Sebastopol where he lives.
I started my musical career in the 3rd grade when they offered violin in
my school. Then in the 5th grade I started to study piano. I studied both
piano and violin for many years after that, but really started playing when
I met my fiddle teacher, Linda Scott, in 1981. She introduced old time
fiddle to me and I haven’t looked back. Since my first amateur contest in
February of 1982, I’ve played in many, many contests and performed
many hours for audiences of all types. Some contests, I’ve done very
well, placing in the top 5 in my division. I’ve judged a number of contests, both amateur and at the state level and enjoy the process immensely because that way I get to listen to everyone play. To me it is a
great joy. I placed 1st in the Western Open Senior Division in 2011 and
judged the Western Open in October of 2012.

Christine chose the fiddle at the age of nine
because of her childhood love for the Little
House on the Prairie book series. Over the
next ten years, she was actively involved in
fiddling at various CSOTFA contests and
events. She and her siblings, who learned both
musicianship and good character through their
years of practicing together, picked up many
entertainment slots at local festivals and
church events. She took formal lessons for five
years and then, having learned to play by ear,
Christine Smith
was able to continue growing musically on her
own. Today she works with at-risk youth,
teaches fiddle in Red Bluff, and catches every opportunity she can for a jam
session.
Randy Warner
Randy Warner is a retired Veterinary Surgeon from Washoe Valley (near
Reno). In his free time, he enjoys hunting, fishing, and doing things with his
grandsons. But more than anything, he enjoys spending time with his wife,
Liz. He is a 3 time Nevada State Fiddle Champion. While he enjoys competing
in fiddle contests, his real joy in attending contests is the chance to see, visit,
and jam with fiddling friends, that he just doesn't get to see very often. Randy
has judged numerous local, state, and regional contests. When judging, he listens for timing, intonation, and being in control of the song. He likes to hear
fiddlers that sound like they are enjoying playing their tunes. Most importantly, he hopes that each competitor has a good time.
