“Protect
our people,
borders”
President Jacob Zuma and Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa Nqakula were honoured.
by MOHANOE KHIBA
Lentswe, Potchefstroom - During the
Armed Forces Day celebration in Potchefstroom this weekend, President Jacob Zuma
said the success of the Defence Force means
safety and security for our people as the
South African National Defence Force exists
to protect our people and our borders.
He talked at the celebration on Saturday 21 February where the SANDF hosted
a public display through Potchefstroom’s
streets. A convoy of armoured vehicles consisting of a wide range of specialized military vehicles and equipment, such as Olifant combat tank, Rooikat armoured vehicles, G6 self propelled guns, Ratel infantry
combat vehicles and many other specialist
vehicles moved through town along dedicated routes.
President Zuma stressed that he convenes
the Armed Forces Day celebration each year
so that they can showcase and celebrate the
success of the defence force.
The majestic celebrations for the day also
included a mass flypast by the SA Air Force,
a medal presentation, street parade and career exhibition.
“This day is also the anniversary of the
fateful sinking of the Mendi ship, killing
more than 600 black soldiers who had enlisted as a labour corps for the First World
War.
“It is one of the saddest moments in our
colonial history. On the ruins of the Mendi
and the racial discrimination of that era, we
have built a defence force in which all are
equal regardless of colour, race or creed.
“We pride ourselves on having established
this new, united national defence force out
of the divisions and complications of the
past,” Zuma said.
He added that the Armed Forces Day is
also an occasion to reflect on the progress
and achievements made in the past 20 years
of democracy.
The people from Potchefstroom welcomed the occasion with a positive attitude.
A cop, Godfrey Sapula who was at the
Trim Park’s display side said: “I have
learned a lot from this event, because it was
very exciting, interesting and successful.
We are so impressed that our soldiers have
enough resources.”
A teacher, Victor Mokoena said: “This
is the most beautiful event ever, because
all races are here and everyone is enjoying
it. This will also help our children to join
forces with no doubt. For this event to be
annually, we will learn more each and every
year with this positive attitude.”
“Here at home, our men and women
in uniform continue to inspire our nation
through providing much needed assistance
and support in communities that are faced
by natural disasters. With the ever changing
weather patterns in the country causing
floods and other disasters, our people have
been able to rely on the Defence Force to
rescue and assist those in need and also to
provide medical care and other support.
“This highlights the Defence’s responsibility to support other government departments and the people of the country
against environmental and non-military
threats,” Zuma added.

Lentswe also asked the department
about the number of their ambulances
on the road.
“The availability of ambulances on
a day to day basis will fluctuate due to
daily breakdowns, accidents or administrative challenges or delays that are experienced. There is a daily fleet report
which indicates availability and functionality and which will assist management to plan accordingly.
“On 17 February, the vehicle availability was as follows: Matlosana = 7,
Tlokwe = 4, Maquassie Hills = 3 and
Ventersdorp = 2,” Lekgethwane said in
a response.
The department further claimed that
the procurement of ambulances has
been prioritised. Lekgethwane said the
department also has an agreement with
private ambulance providers to respond
when all vehicles are on call.
The department further said they
had not received complaints from
Nkagisang, however they said such
complaints should be directed through
the Office of the District Manager in Dr

Women to beat violence
by MOHANOE KHBA
Lentswe, Jouberton - Domestic violence can lead to murder, divorce and
child abuse.
And for the women from Tlhabologang Hope Centre, happiness must take
the place of violence and on Saturday
21 February, women gathered under
the theme “Tsetsepela” at Jouberton
Police Station to speak about domestic
violence.
Speaking to the founder of the centre, Kgalalelo Motloung said: “We are
gathered here as young and old women
just to go to the basics to humble ourselves and seek the solution for domestic violence from God. Our women must
seek peace of mind and a heart from
God, so that they can get direction.”
Motloung who is also a policewoman
said: “Women and men must fix this
problem before they can point fingers
to each other. This thing start at the
family and lead to homeless children
and serious crime like murder and
others.
“It is time to act on the incident and
find the solution of this matter. For us
to combat or fight this, we must communicate.”
Motloung said she saw it impossible
to see a child selling something on the
street without someone asking where it
comes from.
Oumaki Mogashoa who lit the candle
of hope at the event said: “No matter
what a situation, there is still light at the
end of the tunnel.”
While Yvonne Rapoo who was involved in a terrible accident that landed
her in a wheelchair said: “I’m so grateful to God that I’m still alive today. You
don’t have to feel sorry for yourselves
because I’m not feeling sorry for myself.
What you must do is that you must face
your challenges with God’s help.”
The only man who was invited was
the local radio personality Brenza Modipa: “Women are strong people by
birth and my mother is one of them.
“The time is now to
accept the situation, seek
wisdom from God and
move on.”
Modipa lastly said to
the women in Afrikaans ‘Hulle moet vas hou!”.
