Have a seat while you wait
March 2015
By Jon McCarthy
If you have been to the Colfax-Mingo Jr/
Sr High School recently, you may have noticed two “heavy timber park benches” near
the main entrance of the school. The idea
for adding these benches came from Tracey
Wilson who thought that those waiting for
rides would appreciate a place where they
could sit outside. Tracey brought the idea
for the benches to Coach McCarthy, shop
instructor, who then took the idea to Jr/Sr
High School principal Todd Jones, who also
like the “bench” idea. Coach McCarthy then
proposed the project to his construction class
and the students thought it would be a great
project. Tim Forck, [CMHS class of ‘86’],
donated the exterior grade heavy lumber for
the project after hearing about it from Paul
Forck, one of McCarthy’s students. The
construction class made a plan to utilize all
of the donated lumber, then began the many
hours of surface planing, cutting, routing,
sanding, drilling and bolting for the bench
project, explained Coach McCarthy. The
welding class fabricated metal brackets
to reinforce the bench legs. Finally, the
completed benches were stained and sealed
and shown to Colfax-Mingo Superintendent
Community Clean Up
The high school will
again be doing its annual
clean up day from 8:30 to
11:30 a.m. April 22. This will
be the sixth year, and it has
been a great experience for
the school and community. In
the past we have done things
such as rake yards, clean
up trash and brush at parks,
remove trash for ditches, and
plant flowers around town. If
you are in need of help and
would like a crew of students
to come to your house, you
can call the high school and
leave your name, number,
and address. Someone will
get in touch with you about
your specific needs. If you
don’t need help but have
some ideas on what could be
done around the community,
you could contact us as well. IMPORTANT PARENT MEETING

Marty Lucas for final approval. The benches
were then placed in front of the ColfaxMingo Jr/Sr High School.
A big “thank you” goes out to all of those
who had a part in the “school bench project!”
The Colfax-Mingo construction class is
presently working on plans with elementary
principal Brian Summy to install benches at
the Elementary School.
Currently, Coach McCarthy’s construction class is remodeling the high school
weight room’s restroom area and remodeling
the large trophy case in the main lobby of
the Jr/Sr High School.

2015-2016 Kindergarten Information
meeting
There will be a parent meeting for incoming kindergarteners
Monday, March 16 at 6 p.m. in the elementary community room. The
purpose of this meeting is to inform parents about kindergarten
and how it has evolved over the years. The kindergarten staff will
discuss a typical day, supplies, and procedures. Mr. Summy will
discuss building policies and procedures and nurse Kopaska will
discuss immunizations and other health items. Please bring a copy
of your child’s birth certificate and immunization record. We can
make copies if needed. A tour of the building will be provided at
the end of the meeting. Assessment Update
The second round of the FAST Assessment has been completed. Overall, the numbers look good. Students showed good
improvement from fall to winter benchmarking. There were 37 K-6
students that did not make benchmark in either the fall or winter. In
2014 Iowa law was changed to support statewide literacy efforts
for all students in Iowa. If a child does not meet benchmark on two
consecutive assessments, they are identified at substantially deficient.
There are several implications for the school. First of all, we
are required to progress monitor any student who was identified as
substantially deficient. Next, all students that were identified are
March 2015 • Page 2
required to receive intensive intervention to remediate their reading
difficulties. This intervention is required until the student meets
grade level expectations. Parents of the students that are identified
will receive a letter explaining the law and how it works at ColfaxMingo. In addition, a student, parent, teacher, principal contract is
created to identify roles and responsibilities to support the student’s
progress and success in reading.
Grandparent/Grand-Friend Day
The elementary student council hosted this special day again this
year. We are projecting over 350 guests this year! The schedule did
change things up a little this year. Instead of just having guests for
lunch, guests will come for a short performance by the class then go
to the lunchroom for cookies and punch.
PTA Update
The Scholastic Book Fair was here during Parent-Teacher Conferences. The PTA once again purchased a book for each student in
grades preschool-six. Grades ps-3 had $5 and 4-6 had $9 to spend
on a book. Elementary teachers were also given $50 to spend on
books for their classrooms. The elementary would like to send a big
thank you to the PTA for their support!
The PTA annual fundraiser will kick-off on Thursday, March 5th
and conclude Monday, March 23rd. There will be several brochures
to choose from that will include frozen pizzas, mini tacos, and cheesecake! Be sure not to miss out and support the CM PTA. Delivery
of items will be Tuesday, April 21. Blackhawks win Colfax-Mingo Elementary hockey league title
Colfax-Mingo
Elementary
Hockey League concluded its 2015
run Feb. 11. The Blackhawks beat
the Sharks 4-0 for the championship. A.J. Gibson scored three goals
for the Blackhawks.
Fifth and sixth-grade students
are given an opportunity to play
in the hockey league right before
lunch as long as they have good
behavior and stay current on their
homework, said Zach Tomas, Colfax-Mingo physical education instructor.
Tomas said there were more than
90 students divided among nine
teams.
The season goal leader was Gibson with six and the saves leader
was Cory Routh with 12.
The Blackhawks claimed the Colfax-Mingo
Elementary Hockey League championship
on Feb. 11. Members of the team are, left
to right, front row, Tanner Smith, Joshua
Kite, Mathew Warrick and Rhiannon Nichol;
back row, A.J. Gibson, Chelsey Temple and
Justin Myers.
Finishing second in the Colfax-Mingo Elementary Hockey League were the Sharks.
Members of the team are, left to right, front
row, Danica Linn, Sam Allen, Katrina McGruder and Ayla Campbell; back row, Coleman Beach, Madison Gilkison, Brode Nichol
and Jared Gorman.

Grandparent/Grandfriend Day
The fourth annual Grandparent/Grand friend day has come and gone again. We had a wonderful turn out this
year as we tried a new way. This year Grandparent/Grand friends were treated to a performance such as
songs, poems or dancing from each grade and then cookies and lemonade. We were so happy to share this
day with approximately 350 visitors. From sixth grades Cha Cha slide to kindergartens Tooty Ta the interaction with students and guests was a memorable time. Thanks to all that attended.

Iowa College Aid cautions college-bound students
about financial aid scams
Students and their families should never pay for financial aid assistance or services
As students and their families prepare to complete financial aid and scholarship forms
for college, the Iowa College
Student Aid Commission (Iowa
College Aid) wants students to
be aware that they never have
to pay for help filing the FAFSA
or for searching for and applying for scholarships.
It is not unusual for companies to contact Iowa students
and families offering to help
secure financial aid for a fee.
Some organizations claim students must pay an amount up
front for the organization to
“process” their scholarships
and grants. Students and their
families should be wary of any
organization that requires payment for financial aid services. “Unfortunately, there are
still companies who prey on
Iowa families,” said Karen
Misjak, executive director of
the Iowa College Student Aid
Commission. “Families should
be cautious any time company
claims to guarantee scholarships for a fee. A reputable
company will never require
a fee payment to confirm eligibility for a scholarship. If
something sounds too good to
be true, it probably is.” The Federal Trade Commission recommends that families
be suspicious of claims such as:
• “We promise to find you
college scholarships or your
money back.”
• “You are guaranteed to get
this scholarship.”
• “You can’t find this information anywhere else.”
· “You just need to pay
a nominal processing fee.”
• “Give us your credit card
number and we will do all of
the work.”
• “Act now or lose out on
this opportunity.”
• “You’ve been selected” or
“You are a finalist” in contests
you didn’t know existed. If you
haven’t applied, you can’t be
selected.
Additionally, Misjak warns
that students and parents should
never provide bank account
information to an unknown
company or person making
such claims. “We have heard
from families in the past who
were invited to attend a “free”
financial aid seminar, but once
there were pressured into paying the company fees to file the
Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) and to
guarantee grants and scholar-
ships.”
There are many free resources to assist Iowa families
with completing the FAFSA.
Families can attend a [ http://
www.iowacgs.org/ ]College
Goal Sunday event, schedule an appointment with the
Iowa College Access Network
(ICAN), contact the financial
aid office of the college or
reach out to Iowa College Aid. Free and reputable scholarship
sources and searches are also
available on the Iowa College
Aid website, [ https://www.

To learn more about the financial aid process or to report

and families may call Iowa
