Dear people of Sacred Heart & St. Cecilia’s, On this 2nd Sunday of Lent we can begin to see what GOD asks of His people. We also get a glimpse of GOD’s plan, and GOD’s glory. Moriah means—the place of seeing. So, GOD says to Abraham, “Take your son Isaac . . . and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust” [Genesis 22:2]. Abraham listens and obeys. He goes to Moriah [the mountain country], prepares the altar of sacrifice, and lays his son upon it. As he lifts the knife, an angel grasps his arm. A ram replaces Isaac as the sacrifice. Isaac asked, “Where is the sheep for the holocaust?” Abraham answered: “GOD himself will provide” [Genesis 22:7,8]. GOD will see to it. In the end, GOD not only provides the victim; GOD sees “how devoted you are to [me]” [Genesis 22:12]. Until then, GOD had not seen Abraham’s commitment to Him. Because Abraham saw GOD as one who would provide, and trusted in GOD, there is blessing and new life. JESUS also goes up a mountain, where He is transfigured, allowing his three disciples to see a glimpse of the glory to come—divinity shining through. They see JESUS with Elijah and Moses. Then a voice speaks, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him” [Mark 9:7]. GOD provides this moment to prepare for THE STORY [the Paschal Mystery] that requires seeing and listening. It is then that JESUS speaks of His coming death, calling them to take up the cross and follow. Whoever hears and obeys will know blessing and new life—resurrection life. Lent is a time to see: to see what GOD is calling us to, to see GOD at work every time we come here—in the bread and in the chalice, to see JESUS as one who has given His life for us and calls us to go forth and give our lives for others. Let us pray for ourselves and one another: Father, help us to see, to have deeper faith in JESUS, and to open our eyes to the wisdom of what Your beloved Son asks of us to be and do. Fr. YOUTH GROUP NEWS All 6-12th graders are INVITED to join the Sacred Heart & St. Cecilia Youth Group! The youth group will be meeting at Sacred Heart Church on Sunday March 1 at 12:30 PM to "spruce" up the church hymnals. We then will walk to Youngstown Nursing Home for our visit from 2-3 PM. This will be in place of our regular March meeting. Please RSVP to Jennifer Pierce at [email protected]. Our next meeting will be Sunday April 12th. We will be planning for the church donut social on April 19th and "sprucing up" the hymnals at St. Cecilia Church. age 14 and older (with no maximum age) are obliged to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 18), the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday (April 3). Church law forbids use of meat but does not prohibit eggs, milk products or condiments made with animal fat. • Fasting: Catholics in the United States, from the day after their 18th birthday until the day after their 59th birthday, are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Church law allows for only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit the taking of some food in the morning and evening. The combined quantity of these other two meals should not exceed the quantity eaten at the full meal. The drinking of essential liquids does not break the fast. Young children, can begin to learn about fasting by avoiding snacking & treats between meals. Note: People taking medication or with health concerns should follow their doctor’s advice on fasting. Catholics are also reminded they should fast from solid food [including candy, gum, and snacks] for one hour before receiving the Eucharist even outside the Lenten Season. • Prayer/almsgiving: Abstinence and fasting should lead Catholics to a deeper prayer life. Almsgiving provides an opportunity for a deeper understanding and response to the needs of the poor.
