PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
After 5 years of writing monthly articles I’m giving myself a break. This is
what you will see in this spot for the
next month or two, with updates.
Upcoming:
Edgemont Recreational Soccer – registration opened
Feb 1. There may still be spots available. Go to www.
edgemontsoccer.ca
March 11 – 1 WORLD Community Cultural Celebration. This is our 4th annual event, hosted by Tom Baines
School this year. All residents are welcome. This is a
truly amazing event, and I hope you can join the celebration this year!
April 11 – Kick-off event for the LEAF (Community
Landscape Enhancement) petition. 10 AM – 2 PM Plans
include free food & soft drinks, free trees for the first
people to sign the petition in support of the project.
April 29th- Annual General Meeting – the draft agenda is in this issue. If you think you might want to know
more about what’s happening in our community, this
is the place to be. If you’d like to get more involved,
please contact me ([email protected]) or Jeff
Edwards (jeff@nwcchurch.ca), our volunteer co-ordinator. Any of these items listed here present a volunteer
opportunity.
May 2 - Community Clean-up - it seems that every
year we come together to somehow cause a dramatic
weather event in the form of a blizzard or monsoon,
for community clean up. Then we put on our reflective
vests and carry on…
July – September – Fundraising Casino. We don’t have
our dates yet, but they will be in this quarter. This is our
biggest fundraiser, and the best bang for your volunteer
hours, dollarwise.
Ongoing:
In addition to the above and our general operations, we
continue to work on these projects and initiatives:
Food Security – the Breakfast Club
Parks & Playgrounds – John Laurie Park playground
update, permanent skatepark, and the Ravine Park playground are in various stages, and we are doing an inventory of all community playgrounds to have a better idea
of which ones are nearing the end of their lifecycle.
Communications – new website and electronic communications initiative
Edgemont Businesses Collaborative – working on
ways to support and raise the profile of local businesses
Take care.
Elaine Scobie

CORRECTIONS
SKATEPARK Q&A (February 2015) – The skatepark will
be along the EAST edge of John Laurie Park, not the
west edge.
CHRISTMAS HAMPERS – We missed Tom Baines
School staff and students in the list of contributors.
They are amazing supporters, and we apologize for the
error!

within its membership.
How Do You Become A Member?

Burns and Scalds
Alberta Health Services EMS responds to a number of
emergencies where a young child has sustained severe
burns, or scalds. These incidents often occur inside the
child’s own home. Common causes include: a child accidentally tipping hot liquids onto themselves, touching a
hot surface, or making contact with an electrical outlet.
Fortunately, incidents such as these can be avoided by
taking simple preventative measures.
Degrees of burn
1. Affects only the top layers of the skin; appears red like
a sun burn; discomfort is generally tolerable;
2. Deeper and much more painful than first degree
burns; broken skin or blisters commonly develop;
3. Severe: the deepest layers of skin and tissue are injured; may appear charred or leathery.
First Aid for burns
• Skin may continue to burn if not aggressively cooled.
Immediately douse burns with large amounts of cold
water.
• Cover the burn with a sterile dressing, or any clean material to protect from infection;
• Over the counter medications may be used for pain.
Adhere to directions given on the label;
• Seek further medical attention from your doctor, as
required.
Prevention of burns
• Check the temperature of your hot water tank. Many
homes keep hot water temperatures as high as 60°C /
140°F. This temperature will scald a child in just seconds;
• Use placemats instead of tablecloths. Tablecloths can
be yanked downward causing hot drinks, or food to
spill on a child;
• Turn pot handles to the back of the stove and ensure
cords from kettles, slow cookers, and other electrical
appliances cannot be reached;
• Avoid picking up a child while holding any hot liquids;
• Ensure electrical outlets are made secure by installing
commercially available safety devices that prohibit access.

Edgemont
A Message from your
Volunteer Coordinator
Hi Edgemont,
Here’s my Spring thank-you list:
• Thanks Wednesday Breakfast Club and team (see
pics). Lots of kids drop in before school every week.
It is a great chance to eat, meet and visit.
• Thanks to Theresa Jarosinski for coordinating the
new ravine playground project! (And to Ginger
DeBoni and team on the rink playground.)
• Thanks to our Snow Angels (teens and adults) who
did such great shoveling work this winter.
• Thanks to our LEAF volunteers. Canvasser training
is March 25, 26 and 28 at the ECC.
• Thanks to those who deliver Friday Food Hampers… and all our regular neighbourhood volunteers.
If you are interested in joining any of these teams,
please contact me. Oh, and mark Saturday May 2nd in
your calendars for our annual clean-up. Keep loving
your neighbourhood!

LEAF Program Update No. 6
FPx2 LEAF PROGRAM The time has arrived to finally establish Edgemont’s Landscape Enhancement and Appreciation Fund (“LEAF”). 2015
is the year to gain support for the program and 2016 will be the first year to enjoy enhanced landscapes throughout
our community. LEAF will enable homeowners to enjoy living in a clean, attractive and well maintained community
in addition to attracting new proud homeowners. The program’s proponents believe LEAF will increase property
values over the long term and inspire private property maintenance through leading by example.
The amount of $7 per month, or $84 per year, will triple the budget currently available to the City of Calgary Parks
department for services such as:
• Spring and fall clean up
• Raised planters with assortment of colors and flower
textures
• Perennial and annual flowers
maintenance
FPx2 • Tree well & shrub bed

program is by dropping in at the April 11 Breakfast Petition Kick Off. We will quickly look up your address, find
the correct sheet and accept your signature (come early
and get a free tree). If you are unable to drop in, no problem - you could either (i) make an appointment to see
the LEAF team, or (ii) wait for canvassers to come to your
property.
• To make an appointment to sign the petition, please
call the ECA office at 403-239-1211 and let them know
what time works for you. The canvasser for your area
will get back you.
Over 60 of your neighbors have volunteered to canvas for the LEAF petition. They
will approach property owners, on a doorto-door basis, and ask for petition support.
The canvassers will be wearing bright yellow “I Love Edgemont” T-shirts and will be wearing name
tags. Please watch for the canvassers in your neighborhood,
open your door and engage in conversation with them.
We require agreement from 66% of homeowners in
Edgemont to establish LEAF and are counting on your
support!
Call for Volunteers - Canvassers Wanted
Thank you to all who have come forward to help canvass
your neighbors for the LEAF program. We could definitely use additional canvassing volunteer help. Canvassers
will be provided with training, maps, brochures, petition
sheets, t-shirts, etc. Detailed training sessions are scheduled in advance of the petition kick off, for March 25th,
26th or 28th at the community center. Do you live in
Edgedale, Edgeland or Edgehill and are willing to help?
If yes, please contact me at [email protected].

Main Streets - Get Involved and Stay Informed
Calgary’s main streets are ideal places to live, work and
play. The City’s Main Streets initiative will analyze the
needs of neighbourhood residents, along with economic research, to identify success criteria for future
growth in these areas.
Transit operators do so much more than just drive;
they ensure passenger safety, keep to a schedule,
check fares, give directions, remember stop requests,
all while manoeuvring large vehicles through unpredictable traffic, adverse weather and tight spaces.
Most do all this and more with a smile on their face.
On Wednesday, March 18, join us in celebrating our
hard working bus and CTrain drivers. It could be as

Keeping sidewalks shovelled, ice-free and safe can be
very challenging – even dangerous – for older adults
and others who have limited mobility. As you shovel
your walk this winter, take a few extra minutes to clear
a neighbour’s too. You’ll help them, and everyone else
who travels the sidewalk. If you have a Snow Angel
helping you keep your walks clear of snow and ice this

by The City and entered for a prize.

Soccer 2015
Registration for Edgemont outdoor recreational soccer
begins Feb 1st at edgemont.ab.ca. All registration is online. The season runs from April 22 - June 24 covering
ages 3 - 14 (U4 - U14) and is followed by a season end
BBQ celebration. We are looking forward to cooperation
with Dalhousie Soccer this season including a shared
U10 house league.
Recreational soccer has always been a popular program
in our community, with 415 boys and girls registering in
2014. Teams are formed to be even and fun. Fun is vital
for the kids to do their best and to learn to appreciate
soccer as a healthy lifetime activity.
Our program is dependent on volunteers to exist, so all
registrants must volunteer or pay a non-volunteer fee.
Above all, we need coaches and assistant coaches, and
free training is provided for anyone willing to help out
in this important and fulfilling role. Please consider volunteering in such a capacity.

An Eco-Integrity Index will evaluate Calgary’s parks, by
scoring them city-wide for plants in forest, shrub, and
grassland habitats. This will help with management,
restoration, and trail design for existing parks, as well as
planning connections for new parks.
In 1994, Council approved plans for Natural Area Management, the River Valleys, Nose Hill Park, and Calgary
Urban Park. Since then, Council-approved the Environmental Open Space (EOS) Plan in 2003. The aim was to
have policies and guidelines for active management of
natural areas in Calgary.
News from
the Friends
of Nose Hill
Now under review are EOS policies which will be revised for the New Community Planning Guidebook.
The MGA Act refers to areas as: environmentally significant, wetlands, escarpments, ravines, coulees, swamps,
natural drainage features, etc.

A report on wildlife-vehicle collisions indicates the
total killed are: bears (2), cougars (3), coyotes (772),
deer (5,152), and moose (48). The cost is estimated at
$35,567,264 (2005-2014). This is based on human injury
and fatality, EMS, police investigation, towing, vehicle
repair, removal and disposal of animal killed.

The Parks Department will consult with stakeholders
about protection of the environment in land use. Industry, community associations, non-government organizations, academics, and other government agencies will help to build a work plan.
There are already changes to the frameworks for the
Habitat Restoration Project and Biophysical Assessment. A Council Committee on Planning and Urban
Development will consider the proposals prior to approval.
The Biodiversity Strategic Plan is almost complete (after the engagement process) and will go to the Council
Committee on Community and Protective Services. If
approved, the plan will be implemented, and the Parks
Department will contact stakeholders for ongoing engagement and collaboration.
The oral history project is in Calgary’s 10-year plan to
“integrate with Calgary’s nature”. Currently, the City is reviewing the transcripts from focus group sessions, held
last spring and fall, as well as personal documentations
of those who submitted their responses electronically.
Over this year a literature review will be performed, another focus group session with non-experts held, and
a paper based on the project’s findings submitted to
peer-reviewed journals for publishing.
Over the course of implementing the strategic plan,
the hope is that the oral history project will continue in
various forms, so that we have ongoing opportunities
to showcase our connections to Calgary’s nature.

Got Text Neck?
Over the past few years I have noticed an ever increasing rate of neck and upper back injuries that are
directly related to the overuse of laptops, tablets and
smart phones. These types of injuries are referred
to as postural strains of the neck and upper back or
more commonly as “text neck” or “computer posture”.
Now, I am not saying that you should give up your
electronic devices. The problem however, lies in how
people use their technology. Just observe anyone
using their iPad. They typically look down, with the
neck and upper back flexed forward, shoulders rolled
inwards, and chest pulled downwards. This results in
tight upper back (trapezius) and chest muscles (pectoralis) while the muscles on the front of your neck
(flexors) and between your shoulder blades (lower
trapezius, rhomboids) become weak. Ultimately, this
“slouched” or anterior head position increases the
load placed on the spine, shoulders and all related
soft-tissues resulting in muscle strains, neck & back
pain, and tension headaches.
Now for the good news! These postural strains and
muscle imbalances can be effectively treated and
corrected through simple exercises and postural
awareness. There’s no magic to it; I always recommend that my patients should strengthen weak muscles and stretch tight muscles and by doing so they
can restore muscle balance, correct poor posture
and resolve their aches and pains. Through simple
changes in lifestyle and increased knowledge about
what is causing your problem, you can break the vicious cycle (sedentary work, poor posture, lack of exercise, etc.) caused by hunched over technology use.
So get up and exercise, take breaks from your laptop
and smart phone, and you will gain energy, feel better, and improve your overall health.

“For thousands of homeowners, polybutylene
plumbing has become a recurring nightmare.”
- Ed Bradley, CBS-60 Minutes
Polybutylene (also known as PB or Poly-B) pipe is a
flexible, grey pipe that was used in several million homes
built from 1970 to the mid-1990s. Due to problems with
leaks, Poly-B water pipes are no longer accepted by
United States or Canadian building codes and have been
the subject of class action lawsuits in both countries.
Poly-B fails without warning because it breaks down
from the inside of the pipe over time, which can result
in sudden catastrophic damage or severe structural
damage including mold if a pipe has been leaking for
some time without detection. The older the pipe, the
more likely it is to fail. Not replacing Poly-B in a home
has a 60% probability of failure within 20 years, which
further increases over time.
Modern West Plumbing & Heating specializes in the
complete turn-key removal of Poly-B in your home by a
professional, courteous, and experienced team including
a Master Plumber. Replacing this pipe in your home will
protect your investment and your personal belongings,
save thousands on repairs, and add significant value to
your property.

Winter hair tips
Winter is upon us!!!
Calgary winters are very dry, leaving our luscious locks
vulnerable and very susceptible to further damage,
brought on by moisture loss. Taking care of your hair
can help you make it through the season without fly
aways and brittleness. Here’s a few tips and tricks that
will help you combat the dryness and get maximum
moisture out of your everyday styling..
• Hair is made up of bonds.
• Wet hair breaks hydrogen bonds allowing our hair to
be more malleable and take on its drying state.(such
as a ponytail kink or curlers). Bonds are mended as you
dry and since bonds are a lot stronger together, we
recommend completely drying your hair before going
outside in the cold. Going out with damp hair weakens
the bonds ability to mend, leading to damage.
• Styling with a heat protector or a styling oil will help
seal the cuticle of the hair strand and not allowing
outside pollution, cold air and sun/wind damage goes
a long way in keeping your locks in their finest form.
Many products are designed to help. Ask a professional hair stylist for recommendations if yours aren’t doing
it for you.
• Use cool water as your final rinse on your hair. Using
hot water to rinse out shampoo allows removal of oil
and dirt. While rinsing conditioner out with cooler water helps seal your hairs cuticle and lock in moisture
by not allowing natural hair sebum (oil) to wash away.
• Hats and toques are always a great option for protection.

Death at La Fenice: A Commissario Guido Brunetti
Mystery, by Donna Leon
Donna Leon is one of those very few authors whose
work is popular not only among mystery aficionados
but also with those who do not regularly read the genre
(or any others). If you have yet to experience Leon or
Brunetti, there is no time like now to start. Death at La
Fenice is the first in this series of Venetian mysteries
where the city itself is one of the principal characters.
There is little violent crime in Venice, a serenely beautiful floating city of mystery and magic, history and decay. But the evil that does occasionally rear its head is
the jurisdiction of Guido Brunetti, the suave, urbane
vice-commissario of police and a genius at detection.
Now all of his admirable abilities must come into play in
the deadly affair of Maestro Helmut Wellauer, a worldrenowned conductor who died painfully from cyanide
poisoning during an intermission at La Fenice.
But as the investigation unfolds, a chilling picture slowly
begins to take shape—a detailed portrait of revenge
painted with vivid strokes of hatred and shocking depravity. And the dilemma for Guido Brunetti will not
be finding a murder suspect, but rather narrowing the
choices down to one. Intrigued yet?

Are You Implementing
Strategies to Minimize Tax?
Ask an Expert
Q
Are there certain assets that I should give special
consideration to in order to avoid paying undue
tax?
A
Sheri MacMillan,
Senior Trust & Estate Practitioner,
CEO of MacMillan Estate Planning Corp.
and Host of The Strongroom on QR77
Each year, countless individuals pay an excessive
amount of tax to Canada Revenue Agency. In
order to preserve the value of your assets, it is vital to
structure your estate in a strategic manner. Although tax
is an unavoidable reality within even a well-composed
estate, there are many tools available that may
significantly reduce or defer an estate’s taxation
liability. A proper tax plan should account for both
domestic and international issues. Many families are
unaware that internationally held assets, such as U.S.
vacation properties or U.S. investments, are liable
to both Canadian and U.S. estate taxes. Failure to
structure these assets within a larger tax scheme will
inevitably cause their real values to be reduced. In addition
to the aforementioned risks, foreign assets can also legally
create multiple estates. By owning U.S. property or
U.S. investments, you are recognized to possess both a
Canadian and U.S. estate. Upon an individual’s
passing, these two estates will need to be settled, adding
considerably to the amount of time and money required.
Ultimately, your assets both inside and outside of Canada
require careful planning. In order to reduce tax, it is vital
to use the most qualified experts available. Always consult
with a professional to ensure you are properly protected.

Did you see I waved? I believe in you and God so
tell me that I’m saved!
Against the backdrop of corporate America and the
Occupy Wall Street movement, the story of a social
and political rebel in a time of turmoil rings true
again. What better way to tell that story than to use
a parallel of contemporary celebrity worship that
the western world is very familiar with.
What then to do about this Jesus-mania? Miracle wonderman - hero of fools. No riots, no army, no fighting, no
slogans –one thing to say for him, Jesus is cool.
As Jesus’ radical teachings are evermore embraced,
Judas increasingly questions the enlightened
motives of this new prophet, resulting in betrayal.
Christ’s final days are dramatized with emotional
intensity and thought-provoking edge, propelled
by a stirring score that is by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender to illuminate the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that
goes straight
to the heart.

CALGARY BOARD OF EDUCATION
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Website: http://www.cbe.ab.ca • Email: [email protected]
Health and Wellness at the Calgary Board
of Education
The Calgary Board of Education knows that students who
are healthy and feel safe learn best. Our schools play a key
role in working with students, families and communities
to create vibrant, physically and mentally healthy schools.
We are committed to doing everything we can to promote
student health in our schools, including, creating strategies
to foster safe and caring school communities, taking a
whole-school approach to health, following the Alberta
curriculum, and by working together with community
partners to support students’ health and wellness needs.
At the CBE, we believe in a whole-school approach to
health and wellness. We call this our Comprehensive
School Health (CSH) approach and it includes active living,
supportive social environments and positive mental
health. As a system we focus on the following four areas:
• healthy eating
• healthy relationships
• physical activity
• positive mental health
Every school is asked to create its own set of goals related
to these four areas of focus. To support the schools in
reaching their goals, the CBE has many different programs,
partnerships and strategies to support our schools in
creating healthy communities.
Students, staff and school communities have the shard
responsibility of cultivating environments that welcome
everyone and provide opportunities to thrive in life and
learning. Since no two schools are the same, this looks
different in every school.
The Board of Trustees are proud of what our schools have
done and continue to do to create healthy, safe, positive,
inclusive, and welcoming environments that support and
respond to the needs of students and staff.
We welcome your comments, feedback and questions. You
can contact the Board of Trustees at boardoftrustees@cbe.

Nominate your Snow Angel
Keeping sidewalks shoveled, ice-free and safe can be
very challenging – even dangerous – for older adults
and others who have limited mobility. As you shovel
your walk this winter, take a few extra minutes to
clear a neighbour’s too. You’ll help them, and everyone else who travels the sidewalk. If you have a Snow
Angel helping you keep your walks clear of snow and
ice this winter, contact 311 to have them officially
recognized by The City and entered for a prize.
For more information, or to nominate your Snow Angel, visit calgary.ca/snowangels
Because Our Transit Drivers Rock, We Roll
On March 18, let’s say thanks.
Every weekday, over half a million Calgarians get
around the city with the help of Calgary Transit’s drivers. They have a tough job and it’s time we thanked
them.

Transit operators do so much more than just drive;
they ensure passenger safety, keep to a schedule,
check fares, give directions, remember stop requests,
all while manoeuvring large vehicles through unpredictable traffic, adverse weather and tight spaces.
Most do all this and more with a smile on their face.
On Wednesday, March 18, join us in celebrating our
hard working bus and CTrain drivers. It could be as
simple as saying thanks or giving your driver a smile
and wave. You can also send a tweet to @calgarytransit
thanking your driver, or you can say thanks the oldfashioned way with a hand written card.
