inventory of all community playgrounds to have a better idea of which ones are nearing the end of their useful life. We are investigating the possibility of adding

value in communication, and that there is also great
value in residents knowing what’s happening in our
neighbourhood. This value is created by a lot of volunteer effort. ECA currently uses the Inside Edge, our

posters, messages distributed by our schools and soccer & other programs, public meetings. Yet it seems
that a fair number of people are not getting our message. We are working on a system enabling us to use

LETTERS
TO THE EDITOR
My husband and I moved to Edgemont in 2010. We
were drawn to this community because of the beautiful ravines and parks. There are so many off leash dog
parks and wild life, not to mention all of the 30+ year
old trees. When we first moved here we weren’t thinking about the next chapter of our lives but our daughter
came quickly after and is now 2 and a half years old. It’s
funny how quickly your perspective can change… suddenly I started noticing that all of the playgrounds within our community were in desperate need of upgrades.
I have recently become involved within the community
to make sure that I do my part to ensure the children in
Edgemont have the opportunity to enjoy their outdoor
environment to the extent that newer communities
enjoy without thought. We have amazing people on our
community board that I know I will have the privilege
of getting to know better as time goes on. The people I
have met so far really care about our community and I
have great respect for them in the short amount of time
I have spent in their company.
I attended my first community meeting on January 26th
to introduce myself to the community association as the
lead on the playground project next to the tennis courts
in Edgemont. That same meeting a group of individuals
from “phase 1” were attending to discuss their opposition to the skate park that is to be placed in the park
just off John Laurie Blv. They brought forward a petition
with over 300 signatures, all of whom signed against
having a skatepark in our community. I will not get into
the details of that meeting (although I feel there were
many invalid points brought to play by the opposition)
but I feel the need to express my opinion.
My child will grow up in a completely different world
than “phase 1”. Our community is at a tipping point. It
seems to me that this debate is more about the “old” vs
the “new”. Our children today are exposed to so much
technology that we fight with them to explore the
outside world instead of staying indoors attached to a
screen.
Tonight I went to the Skatepark open house and I saw
kids, children, teens and their parents all trying to communicate their message. They were excited! Their parents were excited to see them excited! One comment
the opposition brought up is that they do not want to
take this experience away from the daytime children
they simply want to ensure that the teenagers of the
night don’t ruin our community. Are we protesting a
skatepark or bad patenting? I’m confused…
We need to think about the future of our community.
New families revitalize Edgemont. Edgemont needs
new and excited young people to help rejuvenate our
community like the ones I saw last night at the open
house. We need people willing to give back. Young
families need to have a reason to move to Edgemont.
Younger generations are required to build sustainable
communities. The Skatepark would be an important attraction and noise concerns could be contained. Compromise on both sides can result in a positive solution
for all. I hope that both parties can work together so that
the children in our community can enjoy a day at the
skatepark.

Good News and Bad News
What do they say about being careful
what you wish for, it might come true?
In my position as Director of Communications and, earlier, as President of the
ECA Board, I often wished that we could stir up some interest and participation with the residents of Edgemont
and increase the readership of this monthly newsletter.
The ECA has done such a great job of running and maintaining the Community Centre and all the programs, in
the Centre as well as in the community, that things have
hummed along without much notice from a large proportion of Edgemont’s 16,000+ residents.
Then along comes an issue like a $500,000 skatepark to
be built by the city, at city expense, and people “tune in.”
That’s the good news.
The bad news is that there has been considerable discussion and correspondence of a divisive and acrimonious nature, with a definite tone of disrespect to the
volunteers on the ECA Board.
The Board members all have “day jobs” and volunteer
their time freely in the interests of the Edgemont Community. They are visible, accessible and open to respectful questions and concerns, as well as accolades, from all
Edgemont residents.
Among the concerns that have arisen is the editorial
content of the Inside Edge. I would like to offer an overview of how the magazine is put together. As editor, I
am sent content from a variety of sources, be it the
city, our elected officials, EMS, the libraries, Edgemont
groups and schools and the ECA, itself. In some cases
I get displays ready to publish, some require an editorial hand and, in addition, I sometimes produce notices,
usually on behalf of an ECA initiative.
All of this work is done a full month before publication
of the magazine. In the case of this editorial, I am working in the first few days of March. Anything that comes
to me or the ECA after the 4th of the month will be in the
next newsletter (i.e. May).
When I have all the content prepared and pictures and
graphics ready, I email it to the publisher, Great News
Publishing (403-263-3044). The publisher assembles
the magazine and is usually able to fit in all our content.
There are odd occasions where they have omitted articles for space or because they are of too commercial
a nature. They decide the position in the magazine, the
size of the display and also whether there will be colour
in the article and/or graphics.
This is at no cost to Edgemont as all advertising revenue
is for the benefit of the publisher. What this also means
is that Great News provides full Canada Post delivery to
every one of our 5300+ households, free of charge to
the ECA.
What, you may ask, is my training and qualification for
this important job? Well, my training has been on the
job and my qualification is that I volunteered when no
one else did! That’s what we do at the ECA. We see a
need, like a breakfast club for youngsters, and we do it.
We have amazing volunteers who sit on the Board and
fantastic people who step up for individual projects like
the Christmas hampers, casino and student tutoring.
Edgemont, I salute you because, I’m happy to say, we
have much more Good News than Bad News.

The reality is that we are going to face multiple
market downturns in our lives. The good news is that

LEAF Petition Begins on April 11
Please join us at the Edgemont Community Center on
Saturday, April 11 (10:00am to 2:00pm) to sign your
approval for the Landscape Enhancement and Appreciation Fund (“LEAF”). Come early and enjoy a free
breakfast and claim a free tree seedling. The first 100
property owners to drop by the petition kick-off event
and sign the petition will receive a 2 year old Trembling Aspen seedling.
What is the LEAF?
The objective is to establish a landscaping program
that enables homeowners to enjoy living in a clean,
attractive and well maintained community in addition to attracting new proud homeowners. We believe
LEAF will increase property values over the long term
and inspire private property maintenance through
leading by example. The flood of beautiful colors in
the entrances and boulevards will remind everyone
that Edgemont is a community that is loved. 2015 is
the year to gain support by petition for the program
and 2016 will be the first year to enjoy enhanced landscapes throughout our community.
The amount of $7 per month, or $84 per year, will
triple the budget currently available to the City of Calgary Parks department for services such as:
• Spring and fall clean up
• Raised planters with assortment of colors and flower
textures
• Perennial and annual flowers
• Tree well & shrub bed maintenance
• Weed management
• Litter control
• Turf improvement
• Regular watering during the growing season
• Mulch
Background
In 2004 Hawkwood was the first NW Calgary community to establish a LEAF program. The most recent successful LEAF petition in NW Calgary was conducted by
Scenic Acres in 2012. These communities and others
in the NW including Hamptons, Citadel and Royal Oak
Estates have continuing annual programs to beautify
their public landscapes. The contrast between these
communities and Edgemont is dramatic, particularly

over the past few years with the aesthetic downward
spiral in Edgemont. As mandated by the City of Calgary, Hawkwood held a LEAF affirmation vote on September 30, 2014 to reaffirm continued homeowner
support for their program. 100% of votes were cast for
continuation.
During the summer of 2014 the ECA appointed Edgemont LEAF program leaders and decided to take initial
steps towards establishing a LEAF program. Since then
we have engaged with homeowners through a number of mediums:
• Inside Edge: Regular LEAF updates have been published in the Inside Edge monthly community newsletter, delivered by mail to every household, apartment and business in Edgemont. The article you

• Community Carnival: On September 13, 2014 the
LEAF team hosted a booth at the Community Carnival and spoke with many homeowners about a conceptual plan to establish a LEAF program
• Open House / Town Hall: On November 8, 2014 the
LEAF team hosted a community-wide open house
/ town hall at the Edgemont Community Center to
speak with homeowners about the goals of the program, costs, benefits, petition process, timeline and
volunteer opportunities. The open house / town hall
was advertised and promoted via twitter, the Inside
Edge and large neon announcement signs posted
at community entrances. Attendees had a chance to
voice their thoughts with ECA board members and
Councilor Sean Chu. The open house / town hall was
very successful with an overwhelming expression of
support from attendees for the LEAF program. We
also were very fortunate to sign up a number of new
canvasser volunteers
• Radio Show: On November 14, 2014 CBC’s Calgary
Eyeopener radio show spoke with LEAF team leaders Tom Williams and Helen Campbell. The CBC host,
David Gray, had set up shop at Friends Café.

Petition Process
Individuals who own
property in Edgemont are
eligible to sign the petition. Properties included
are detached homes, attached homes, condominiums,
townhouses, commercial properties, etc. If you are a
tenant please help us by speaking with the owner about
LEAF and referring the owner to our website at www.
edgemont.ab.ca. We would be happy to speak with
them directly if you could kindly share the owner’s contact information.
Owners will be asked to write their name, the date and
signature. Please ensure your name matches exactly
with the land title. Can’t remember how your name appears on the land title? In January, The City of Calgary
mailed the 2015 Property Assessment Notice to property owners. Check the address line - that is the name to
use for the petition.
The easiest way to commit your support for the LEAF
program is by dropping in at the April 11 Breakfast Petition Kick OffFPx2 . We will quickly look
up your address, find
LEAF PROGRAM the correct sheet and accept your signature (come early and get a free tree). If you are unable to drop in, no
problem - you could either (i) make an appointment to
see the LEAF team, or (ii) wait for canvassers to come to
your property.

what time works for you. The canvasser for your area will get back to you.
Over 60 of your neighbors have volunteered to canvas
for the LEAF petition. They will approach property owners, on a door-to-door basis, and ask for petition support. The canvassers will be wearing bright yellow “I
Love Edgemont” T-shirts and will be wearing name tags.
Please watch for the canvassers in your neighborhood,
open your door and engage in conversation with them.
We require agreement from 66% of homeowners in
Edgemont to establish LEAF and we are counting on
your support!
Canvassers Wanted
The City of Calgary has set the bar high for approval of
a LEAF program – two-thirds of the property owners in
Edgemont must indicate, by written signature, that they
support the payment amount.
For this reason we require a lot of manpower. If you
are passionate about Edgemont and would very much
like to enjoy beautified entrances and boulevards, we
strongly encourage you to volunteer as a canvasser.

Polybutylene (also known as PB or Poly-B) pipe is a
flexible, grey pipe that was used in several million homes

A Message from your Volunteer Coordinator
Hello Edgemontonians,
Did you know we have great volunteers? We’ve just
nominated Rick Wierzbicki for an award for being skating rink volunteer extraordinaire for just about forever.
We appreciate you Rick! And I’ve been telling the City
about our Snow Angels, Youth Reporters, and Youth
Board Members. We have the best teenagers in Calgary.
Volunteering news and dates:
• Feb.5 – Skatepark Open house manned by ECA volunteers
• Feb.21 – We sent five volunteers to the Kinsmen Foodbank Drive in Crowfoot. Thank you guys.
• Mar.11 – 1World at Tom Baines was amazing. So many
volunteers! Thank you.
• Mar.25-28 – LEAF canvasser training at the ECA. We
need 10-20 more volunteer canvassers.
• Apr.11 – LEAF campaign begins. See the map in the
ECA office if you’d like to help in your area.
• May 2 – Our annual clean-up, serve day, and charity
garage sale. (I’m in China right now with an Edgemont
team delivering garage sale proceeds to our orphanage there.)
• June 18 – Volunteer Recognition Evening at the ECA.

• July 3-12 – Kinsmen (playground partners) need help
with ticket sales at Stampede.
• Sept.11-13 – Up to 30 volunteers needed each day to
build John Laurie Park Playground. The funding is in

• Wednesdays AM – Breakfast Club continues and needs
helpers. Thank you Edge and Tom Baines Baking Club

Happy Easter! We hope this joyous season allows for

who were able to participate in our moving ‘Stations of
the Cross’ on Holy Thursday. This school wide activity
provides us the opportunity to reflect, discuss and begin our Easter break in a reverent manner.
Our Open House was a great success. Thank you to all
of the students who participated through sharing their
gifts and their experiences in our fine arts school. We
will have a second Open House later in the spring during the school day to allow potential new families to see
our school ‘in action’.

inches) in height. This also applies to vacant lots with

COSTA
RICA
Costa Rica is a country with many ecosystems and fabulous flora and fauna. Situated between the Atlantic and
Pacific oceans, it is bordered on the north by Nicaragua
and on the south by Panama. The whole country is only
a few degrees north of the equator and is hot and humid at low altitudes. At the higher altitudes, however,
it is cooler, and the vegetation reflects the temperature
change. My tour covered visits to the Caribbean forest,
cloud forest, rain forest, Pacific coast, and high interior
mountains. At 7,000 ft. elevation, the air felt amazingly
like it feels in Alberta – cool, crisp and dry (well, drier
than the rain forest at the last stop). There were heaters
in our rooms, for which we were grateful. Our lodge had
beautiful grounds landscaped with geraniums, roses,
calla lilies, hydrangeas, drifts of impatience, and hedges
and arbors of black-eyed Susan vine – the same ones
we buy in the spring and train up a little trellis, encouraging them to grow as fast as they can until frost comes
in September.
Of course there was all the tropical vegetation you expect to see and the fruit we buy in our local stores like
bananas, pineapple, mango and papaya. There are many
enormous plantations providing fresh produce to countries around the world. And sugar cane, of course, much
sugar cane. The African Oil Palm is one of the crops
that is perhaps less well known to us; certainly I had not
heard of it. The tree is a palm, native to Africa, which is

shorter and stockier than the coconut palm we visualize
when we think of a tropical beach. It is planted in rows
on land that has been cleared of other vegetation (deforested, in many cases) with enough space between
the trees for a cart or wagon pulled by oxen or tractor
to bring the fruit to the edge of the field for transport
to the processing plant. In the SW part of Costa Rica
near the coast where the temperature and humidity is
right, many of these plantations are on land that used
to grow bananas. Some decades ago, there was a banana blight which destroyed the industry, and another
crop had to be found. The African Oil Palm was a good
replacement. Human use of palm oil dates back 5,000
years. It is a major crop in many tropical countries from
Malaysia to Latin America and Africa. It supplies 35% of
the world’s edible oil. The Oil Palm requires 10 times less
land and produces many times more oil than other oil
producing crops such as canola, soybean and sunflower.
There is controversy around the production of palm oil
because in some countries much of the virgin rain forest
is being cut down and replaced with plantations. At the
same time, many small farms depend upon the income
from this lucrative crop and many more workers are employed in the industry. A balance between virgin forest
and cultivated land is not an easy thing to accomplish.
The tree begins to bear fruit within three years of planting, and will produce for up to 25 years, although for
commercial purposes it is usually replaced before then.
It produces fruit 12 months a year and each fruit contains 50% oil. There are two types of oil - palm oil from
the pulp of the fruit is used for lubricants, soap, candles,
cosmetics, biofuel and other products. Palm kernel oil,
from the seed of the fruit, is used in practically every
packaged food on our grocery shelves that says “vegetable oil”. This includes margarine, shortening, cereals, snack foods, etc. etc. The cake that is left after oil
extraction is used for animal feed and can also be used
to make products like paper and fertilizer. Take a look in
your pantry and see how much palm oil you can find.

Rotator Cuff Injuries
It’s All About Imbalance
“I think I injured my rotator cuff ” is a phrase that people
often use to describe their shoulder injury. What many
people may not realize though is that the rotator cuff
is not a single anatomical structure, but rather is comprised of four separate, yet interconnected, muscles
and tendons. Together, the rotator cuff muscles act to
stabilize the shoulder joint during movement. Individually, each muscle performs a primary action, but also
works to counterbalance the actions of the opposing
muscles. For example, the subscapularis muscle found
on the front of shoulder blade acts to turn the arm inwards while the two muscles on the back of the shoulder blade (i.e. infraspinatus, teres minor) act to turn the
arm outwards.
Now, imagine an imbalance involving just one of these
muscles. This imbalance can destabilize the shoulder
and contribute to the development of a variety of shoulder conditions (e.g. strain, shoulder impingent). For example, if we look at people who play racquet sports (e.g.
tennis, squash, badminton), they often have shortened
and restricted internal rotators due to the repetitive
overhead swinging motions involved in these sports.
Ultimately, this leads to the weakening of the muscles
on the opposite side of the shoulder (the external rotators) and can easily result in a strain at the back of the
rotator cuff.

The good news is that with increased knowledge about
the cause of your problem (in this case, muscle imbalances) you can effectively treat, or even prevent, injury
through exercise. Depending on what caused your rotator cuff injury, carefully selected strengthening and
stretching exercises can help you to effectively resolve
your condition. So take charge of your own health, and
actively participate in the resolution of this condition.

On average, it was estimated that 5,426 people visited the
park, each week, during the summer. The busiest entrance
sites were Edgemont Blvd. NW (1,693 visitors) and 14th St. NW
(1,177 park visitors) weekly.
In all, there were 8 locations studied. The busiest entrance sites
to the Park, by order of use, were: Edgemont Blvd NW (31%),
14th St. NW (22%), Berkley Gate NW and 64th Ave. NW (14%
each), Brisebois Dr. NW (11%), Calgary Winter Club (4.4%),
MacEwan Glen Dr. NW at the bus stop (4%), and 19th St. NW
(which was the least.)
Overall, the majority of park users were walking (42%) and
walking dogs (31%), while only 13% of users were cycling and
3% running. Also, 11% of park users were taking part in “other”
activities, which mainly included people sitting in vehicles in
the parking lots to read, drink coffee, eat lunch, and taking in
the views of the City.
For example, there were more dog walking activities (46%)
at the MacEwan Glen Dr. NW site than walkers (40%), and the
highest overall proportion of runners were at the Calgary Winter Club entrance (8% vs. the overall trend of 3% of park users).

At the 14th St. NW location, the “other” activities (25%) were
significantly higher than the overall trend (11%), which was
largely due to the high number of park users who stay in their
cars to eat meals, rest, and enjoy the view of the city provided
at the 14th St. NW parking lot.

Americanah, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s fourth book, Americanah, is so smart about so many subjects that
to call it a novel about being black in the 21st
century doesn’t even begin to convey its heft
and scope. Americanah is indeed a novel about
being black in the 21st century — in America,
Great Britain and Africa— but you could also
call it a novel of immigration and dislocation,
just about every page tinged with faint loneliness. Alternatively, it could be read as an exuberant comedy of manners about the foibles of
Senegalese salon workers, pretentious AfricanAmerican bohemians, Old Money Boston liberals, and artsy white lesbians who wear ugly thrift
store dresses. Adichie, whose 2006 novel Half of
a Yellow Sun won Britain’s Orange Prize for Fiction, observes and ably skewers them all, while
tossing off casual observations about contemporary life. And Americanah is also a love story.
Ifemelu and Obinze meet and fall in love as students in their native Nigeria. He is calm and charismatic; she is argumentative and outspoken.
Unlike characters in much recent fiction set in
Africa, Ifemelu and Obinze are not “starving, or
raped, or from burned villages.” Both of Adichie’s
protagonists want to leave Nigeria not because
they are desperate, but because they long for
choice and stability. Like many Nigerians of their
background, they have been “conditioned from
birth to look towards somewhere else, eternally convinced that real lives happened in that
somewhere else.” The bulk of the novel unfolds
in flashback, a long and vivid account of those 15
years of self-imposed exile, some of which were
degrading and miserable, others happy and
prosperous, all of which offer a thought-provoking perspective on American life. An absorbing
and original novel.

Bicycle Helmet Safety
Head injuries are a leading cause of serious injury and
death to children riding bicycles*. Most injuries occur
when a cyclist suffers a fall, strikes a stationary object,
or collides with another cyclist/pedestrian. Remember – it’s the law in Alberta that cyclists under the age
of 18 must wear a helmet (and highly recommended
for all ages). Helmets should be CSA approved and
worn during recreational activities such as skateboarding, in-line skating, or cycling.
Getting informed
• Wearing a helmet while cycling can prevent a serious injury, or even save a life;
• Brain injuries can cause permanent disability or
death;
• Reduce your risk by always wearing your helmet;
• Replace any helmet that has been involved in a
crash, even if it appears undamaged.
Getting started
• Allow children to assist when buying their helmet.
Cyclists who choose their own helmet are more likely
to wear them;
• Start the habit early. Young children learning to ride
tricycles need to wear helmets;
• Parents must lead by example – always wear a helmet when cycling.
Getting the right fit
• Take the time to properly fit and adjust your helmet
to ensure maximum protection in case of a crash;
• When worn properly, helmets should fit level, not
tilted up, or down over the forehead;
• Helmets should feel snug, but not too tight. To
test the fit, the helmet should not fall off when you
shake your head from side-to-side while the straps
are unfastened;
• Adjust the chin straps to form a “Y” below and slightly
forward from the ears;
• Only one finger should be able to fit under the chin
strap when it is fastened;
• Do not forget to use the sizing pads included with
the helmet. They will help improve the overall fit,
comfort and safety.

t’s not all in the name....
Friends Cappuccino Bar and Bake Shop has been part of
the Edgemont landscape since 1996. Since opening the
doors that day in April, 19 years ago, we have enjoyed the
support of a great community.
What started out as an idea for a local gathering place for
moms to enjoy great coffee and baked goods while the
kids were in school, has grown to see a busy cafe serving
fresh baking, panini and deli sandwiches, catering services
and perhaps best known for our fresh made soups.
In the early years when we were trying to figure out our
niche, a friend said “keep it simple, do what you do best
and do it well”. After years of making homemade soup for
friends and family it made sense to offer this to our customers. Something so basic as a hearty bowl of perfectly
seasoned homemade soup can soothe the soul no matter
what the season.
Favourites range from the humble Hearty Chicken Vegetable, Oven Roasted Tomato and Garlic, Three Sisters Corn
Chowder, Split Pea with Ham, Cream of Potato with Garlic
and Dill, Butternut Squash and Apple, Vegetable Beef and
Barley, Red Lentil or Cream of Mushroom to the more adventurous Curried Pumpkin and Coconut, Mulligatawny,
Black Bean, Curried Butternut Squash, White Bean and
Sausage, and Curried Lentil. Every Friday we run out of our
New England Clam Chowder so come early!
Grilled panini sandwiches are crafted to order using the
freshest ingredients. Over the years they have been named
by staff and customers. ‘The One With The Strawberries’
features warm Brie, turkey, lettuce, tomatoes and strawberries. ‘The First One’, aptly named after years of customers
looking at the top of the menu board and saying “ I’ll have
the first one” is a great combination of mozza, turkey, tomatoes and onions. The athlete’s favourite, ‘The Ironman’,
sports artichokes, olives, roasted peppers and Black Forest
ham with a pesto mayo. Our Cheesy Chicken Quesadillas
are also customer favourites and for some reason, a dreary

cold day seems to bring out all the Tuna Melt lovers! For
the vegetarian we offer the ‘Aubergine and Green’ featuring
grilled eggplant and zucchini or the “Popeye” stuffed with
spinach, roasted peppers, tomatoes and warm Brie. For
breakfast we offer two grilled breakfast sandwiches, one
with Black Forest ham, one with avocado.
Our sweets are baked on site, from scratch. Desserts include the Carmelita’s, Date Squares, Galaxy Bars, the Cranberry, Oat and Almond and the one everybody’s Grandma
used to make, the Confetti Square. Our Turtle Brownies are
really chocolate-y and fudgy and our Carrot Cake is loaded
with creamy, cream cheese icing. There are Chocolate Chip,
Peanut Butter or Gingersnap cookies to choose from as
well as treats inspired by the seasons.
Two years ago Friends underwent major renovations. Matt
and Mark from Studio North closed the doors for two
weeks and designed and built a space that breathed new
life and energy into the cafe.
The years have been kind to us at Friends. It has always
been a team effort. We are grateful to the customers and
staff we have met along the way. We look forward to many
more years of making you feel welcome when you arrive
and feeling satisfied when you leave.
