The Second Sunday of Lent brings our attention to an extraordinary event that
happened to Jesus and three of His disciples as they went up on Mount Tabor to
pray. This Sunday, St. Mark describes for us the miracle of the Transfiguration
of Jesus.
The Transfiguration of Jesus is presented in all three of the Synoptic Gospels.
Matthew, Mark and Luke all describe the amazing incident where Jesus’
appearance was changed. Mark tells us that His clothes became dazzling white.
As Jesus stood there in His brilliance, Moses and Elijah also appeared engaging
Jesus in conversation. Peter, James and John, the three disciples who went with Jesus up the high
mountain, saw this incredible vision and were terrified. Mark says that the three hardly knew what
to say and spoke of setting up three tents. Eventually, a mist overshadowed the vision and a voice
declared, “This is my beloved Son, listen to Him!”
In each of the Synoptic Gospels, the Transfiguration takes place a few days after Jesus tells His
disciples about His impending passion and death. The disciples were scandalized at this foretelling
and could not fathom this ever happening to the Lord. Then, when Jesus said to Peter, “Get behind
me, Satan, you are thinking as man thinks, not as God thinks,” it really caused confusion.
Jesus allowed Peter, James and John to witness the Transfiguration to help them understand and
accept His passion, death and resurrection. Mark tells us that as they were coming down the
mountain, Jesus told them not to say anything about what they had seen until He would rise from
the dead. At the time, they had no idea what that meant. However, it is this miracle that would
most effectively help the disciples understand the reason for Jesus’ death, and to accept the
shocking reality of His resurrection. The Transfiguration gave the disciples a momentary glimpse
into heaven. It helped them realize that Jesus was not only the Messiah, but that He is also divine.
Two figures appear with Jesus in the Transfiguration. Moses and Elijah are important because
they serve as links to Jewish law and prophecy. Moses is important because he was the figure
believed to have given the Jews their basic laws and to have written the five books of the Torah,
the basis of Judaism itself. Elijah was considered the greatest of the prophets. He was powerful in
speech and spoke what the Lord had instructed him to say. Both Moses’ and Elijah’s presence
connects Jesus to Judaism, establishing a divinely authorized continuity between the ancient laws
and Jesus teachings.
The voice of God is heard at the Transfiguration. This is tied with the beginning of Jesus’ ministry
when He was baptized and the voice of God was also heard.” You are my beloved Son.” At the
baptism, God spoke directly to Jesus, whereas here, God speaks to Peter, James and John about
Jesus. This also serves as a confirmation of Peter’s confession as to the true identity of Jesus.
Each year, on the Second Sunday of Lent, the Evangelists describe for us the Transfiguration of
Jesus. Let us stand in awe of this extraordinary miracle with Peter, James and John and witness the
glory of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Did you know? Every year, Catholics in the United States assist nearly 100 million of the world’s
poorest people through CRS (Catholic Relief Services). CRS is a member of Caritas Internationalis, a global
network of more than 160 Catholic agencies working to end hunger and poverty. CRS Rice Bowl is a way for
Catholics in the United States to live out Pope Francis’ call to end world hunger. Driven by faith, CRS is
committed to help those in need no matter where they may live. In that spirit, 75 percent of all money raised
through CRS Rice Bowl provides lifesaving aid to those in need overseas, and 25 percent stays in the diocese
for local programs to ease hunger and homelessness. For more information, go to crsricebowl.org/about. Rice
Bowls are available in the vestibule of the church. Please take one home and fill them with coins and dollars
throughout the Lenten season. There will be a receptacle in the vestibule of the church the weekend of April 11
& 12 for you to turn in your Rice Bowls. Thank you for your generosity!
PLEASE PRAY for THOSE WHO ARE ILL
If you have the sick person’s permission, you may request that their name be printed in the bulletin for prayers. This is strictly
for the sick only. Their name will remain for four consecutive Sundays. If a longer period of time is needed, please contact the
parish office. (The date next to the name is the date their name is removed)

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT - 9
LENTEN INFORMATION
FAST & ABSTINENCE
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during
Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a
person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms
concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
Abstinence laws consider that meat comes from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep, or pigs — all of which live on
land. Birds are also considered meat. Abstinence does not include soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or
sauces. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted.
Those that area excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including
individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases
common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting. — www.usccb.org

Second Sunday of Lent
It is Christ who died, or rather, was raised
who also is at the right hand of God, who
indeed intercedes for us. – Romans 8:34
As we hear of Christ is transfigured,
St. Paul reminds us that the Risen Christ
is more than transfigured now.
For reflection this week: Do I feel
strengthened and comforted by Christ’s
glory? Do I call on him as my intercessor
in times of need?
Let us pray: for all who are in need:
May we always come to Christ, our
intercessor before the Father.
