ALLOUEZ ABSTRACTS ALLOUEZ COUNCIL 658, K OF C Published Monthly www.kofc658.org MARCH 2015 ROCK ISLAND, IL VOL XXXV, No. 03 Mar. 12 Upcoming Meetings Allouez Council 658, 1st Degree & Meeting, Farrell Hall, St. Pius X Ladies Auxiliary Meeting, Farrell Hall, St. Pius X 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE— JOSH BRUEGGEN, GRAND KNIGHT Turn Away From Sin and Be Faithful to the Gospel To my brother knights and all others who may happen to read this message the phrase “turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel” should be ringing recently in our ears. For those struggling to place this phrase, recall that the priest admonishes you to do exactly this as he applies ashes to your forehead on Ash Wednesday. This is indeed a deep and mighty charge that all of us spend every day trying to fulfill, but also one that needs to be spoken occasionally to remind us of our charge as Catholic men. Life is often trying, and sin surrounds us and seeks to lead us astray every day…occasionally our barriers are worn down, and we fail in our charge. For this reason it is all the more amazing to contemplate the grace with which we were all bestowed when God sent his only son to give us a chance to overcome our innate human frailties. Turn away from sin. Sounds simple, but this simple charge is never quite as easy as that. It is, therefore, all the more important that we make time to reflect upon ourselves and our nature, and work to come closer to god in our daily lives. Luckily the church has given us a whole season to address this issue, and instructions on just how we are to atone for our failings. Just in time for Easter no less. Be faithful to the gospel. Again, this sounds easy, and again, much easier said than done. Keep in mind all that was given to give you a chance at redemption, and never forget those who have never had the chance to welcome Christ into their life. We live in a troubled world, a world that needs the message of the gospel more every day it seems…let us not be afraid to live the gospel in our lives, and let the light of our faith in the gospel help brighten the world. Proclaim the gospel in all that you do, so that others may be inspired by the example of your faith. FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR’S MESSAGE – Greetings Sir Knights, We had a very productive meeting on the 4th of February with about 20 Knights present. Coming up on the 14th of March will be the St. Patrick’s Day parade in downtown Rock Island. We will meet at St. Mary’s Church for Mass around 9:30. For those of you that have regalia, please come dressed, and the others may come in your tuxes. We will have the wagon decorated that you can ride if you are not able to march. We usually have a good turnout, and the spectators along the route really appreciate the knights. On April 10th, there will be an Exemplification in Coralville, IA. If you know any knights that are considering becoming a 4th degree member, please have them complete a form 100 so we can have their form read at the next meeting. This will be one of the closer Exemplifications. If you have any questions, please contact either myself ([email protected] – (309) 738-5779) or Joe Militello (?)(sorry Joe for the misspelling) or Howard Killian, both from the Leo Council. We have also been asked to have a presence at some confirmations coming up in April. Again, please show up at the meeting, which will be at Pizza & Subs on Blackhawk Road in Rock Island on the 26 of March, the last Thursday in March. We had to move the date due to Holy Week activities taking place on our normal date. Plan on showing up around 5:30 if you plan to order food and eat, and the business meeting will begin at 7:00pm. Hope to see you there. Reggie White, Faithfull Navigator Father Bader Assembly, #1922 ALLOUEZ LADIES AUXILIARY – The February Ladies Auxiliary had their meeting February 12th. In honor of the wear red for women campaign many of us donned our red sweaters. We received information on heart health and also shared a “heart friendly” dessert. March 12th is our next meeting. Save the date of May 14th. This will be our Mother/Daughter spring banquet. Naab, who passed away on January 24, 2015, at his home. Funeral services were held on January 27 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home. David was born April 17, 1942. He married Marilyn Murphy on November 28, 1966 in Delavan, Illinois. . A veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps, David worked for Trausch Bakery, Dubuque, Iowa, and was previously employed at the former Farmall Works, Rock Island and United Insurance. David was a Member of Allouez Council 658, Knights of Columbus, with 22 years of membership. David volunteered at the Sacred Heart Food Pantry and served evening meals at the Rock Island Township Hall as a ministry of St. Pius X Parish. He also loved supporting Christian Children’s Fund and the mission work of Father Ted Hochstetter in Kenya, Africa. We extend our condolences to his wife, Marilyn. We will keep him in our prayers. ID FUNDS (Tootsie Roll) 3/3/15 On March 3rd the Knights will be presenting checks to eight participating organizations that "partner" with our Council each year for the I.D. Drive (tootsie roll). The SPEC organization will be the host this year at the Believers Together Center at Christ the King parish in Moline. All Knights and their families are invited. The program will start at 7:00 pm with a short presentation/tour by SPEC on their program highlights followed by the presentation of checks and cake/beverage social. The northeast side doors of the Center will be open at 6:30. Please e-mail or call me with any questions. Thank you. Louie Alongi Chairperson, I.D. Drive (Note: The 2015 Tootsie Roll Drive will be held September 18th and 19th) ADORATION COORDINATORS NEED HELP St. Pius X Perpetual Adoration program is being coordinated by and too often staffed by 2 blessed octogenarians. These two members of the Parish not only recruit other volunteers to staff the Adoration Chapel 24/7 but they find themselves all too often taking two or three time slots a day to assure coverage. Like the postmen of old, they have been called upon to fill empty slots day and through the night and have literally trudged through snow, ice and fulfilling their coverage commitments. I have been urging Allouez Council Knights to consider stepping forward to at least be on a list of substitute participants. Which one of us cannot commit to one hour infrequently to sit, pray, meditate or read to keep the Lord company..I am not a great prayer so I take my personal reading material such as the Columbia or the Post to read. HE does not care! It is my intend to continue being a sub for this program as I have been doing for the past year. My hour is from 11-midnight on Sunday evenings. Looking at my calendar I guess that I subbed about 43 Sundays in 2014. It would be my hope as a starter to turn that hour into the Allouez Council Hour and enlist 3-4 additional members to fill in periodically. One member has already said "YES" and has already subbed for the sub. Who would like to join us? Contact me for details. Fred Luckenbill 794-9085. BOY SCOUT SUNDAY On Feb 8, 2015, Knight Fred Luckenbill, Knight Mark Schaecher, Cubmaster of Pack 258 Charlie Bishop, Charlie’s son and I, traveled to Peoria for the Boy Scout Sunday Mass with Bishop Jenky at the Cathedral of St Mary of The Immaculate Conception. During the Mass many Religious emblems were awarded to boy scouts, including Light of Christ, Parvuli Dei, Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII. This was my second time attending the Scout Mass at the Cathedral. I earned my Light of Christ as a Cub Scout and I’ve been encouraged to start my Ad Altare Dei Emblem. Luke Olson, Troop 119 ST. PIUS/ALLOUEZ COUNCIL BLOOD DRIVE NEEDS DONORS The next Allouez Council Blood Drive for St. Pius X Parish is scheduled for Monday, April 6th from 2-6p.m. The Council's efforts to help the Parish to rebuild its Blood Donor Program have been going well but its continued success depends on new donors stepping forward to give either whole blood or double red cells donations. The former results in the donation of one unit of blood that could end up helping up to four patients. The latter ends up providing double product for patient's use. Donors with blood types O+, O-, Aor B- should consider donating double reds that also gives the donor credit for two donations. Current donors will be called for appointments for either whole blood donations or the double red program. New donors should call Louie Alongi at 309-234-6796 or Fred Luckenbill at 309-794-9095 for details and appointments. Donating blood is a wonderful family activity! NEW MELLERY RETREAT Allouez Council’s Annual Retreat at the New Melleray Monastery has been scheduled for May 29-31. It is a relaxed retreat for couples or individuals up to a maximum of twelve persons. Shared rides will be available. Arrival time is scheduled for before 5:00 p.m. on Friday when supper is ready. Saturday afternoon is free for walking, praying, confessions and the rosary. On Sunday morning there is a short conference, Mass, breakfast and lunch. Departure for home is after lunch on Sunday. The suggested contribution is $75.00 per person. Call FRANK ADLFINGER (787-2606) or GENE DESAUNOY (787-2724) for reservations and detailed information. DEACON’S QUESTION BOX Bodily Participation at Mass – Beating the Breast The Penitential Rite as several options. The first one, and one that is not that frequently used, is the Confiteor. Hopefully, its use will grow with the new translation of the Mass. In classical Latin, Confiteor was the witness unto death made by a martyr. Confiteor was used in classical Latin for recognition of the greatness of God, and the recognition of one’s faults. When we speak of a Confiteor now, we mean the public declaration, together with others, of our own fallen sinful state at the beginning of Mass. In the new translation, we use the phrase “I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.” As we say the word fault each time, we strike our breast. Striking the breast expresses our repentance physically, in body language. Its meaning can be muted if we merely brush our chest with our fingers. The correct sign is a closed fist that strikes our chest with an honest blow. As Monsignor Guardini has stated, “To strike the breast is to beat against the gates of our inner world in order to shatter them. It is the outward, bodily sign, of our repentance. This is its significance.” This gesture has been downplayed over the decades since Vatican II. Unfortunately, so has the sense of sin. We need to work on recapturing the seriousness of this gesture. This action when made carefully and with full awareness of what we are doing, communicates to all around us more than our mere words do. This sign states for all to see that we recognize our sinfulness and we publicly declare our sorrow for our sins. There was a time, not all that long ago, when we were encouraged to have a sense of both our own sinfulness and that of the whole world. We were called to build up a profound attitude of repentance for both. As St. Benedict would say, “We know that our prayers will not be heard on account of many words, but because of purity of heart, compunction, and tears.” _________________________________________ Feel free to drop me a question for this column. Questions may be dropped off on the head table at a Council Meeting or sent via email to Deacon Russ Swim, Assistant Chaplain, [email protected], phone 786-3097. HELP NEEDED AT ST. ANTHONY'S CONTINUING CARE CENTER I volunteer at St. Anthony's in Rock Island on Sunday's. This past Sunday the coordinator, Neva Cook from St. Ambrose, mentioned that she need help distributing Holy Communion to the Catholic residents at St. Anthony's. A family member has a serious, chronic illness. There are many residents from St. Pius, and several from other parishes around the area. I know some of the members of the KoC are retired and are also Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers and may have some time during the weekdays. The times involved would be either 9-11 in the morning or in the afternoon. Mass is usually celebrated in the chapel at St. Anthony's on Wednesdays and sometimes on Fridays. All that is needed are hands and time. The rest is taken care of. There is a supply of consecrated hosts kept in the chapel, and Neva maintains the current list of residents. The residents look forward to receiving Communion whenever possible since most of them cannot get to Mass on a regular basis. Neva really needs a hand at this time. If anyone might be interested, they can get in contact with me and I can discuss the details with them. My contact information is: [email protected] 309-292-9551 Thanks in advance, Timothy Dooling INSURANCE AGENT’S MESSAGE Plan for this Tax Day and into the Future April 15 (tax day) is right around the corner. It’s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a tax-savings vehicle. Or perhaps someone has tried to convince you to open an account, touting the rate of interest that money in one of these accounts can earn. Let me join the chorus of folks encouraging you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different reason. Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And, our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. Opening or adding to an annuity for these reasons, however, strikes me as taking a short-term view of a product that is designed to provide long-term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot outlive — guaranteed — sound to you? Here at the Knights of Columbus, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into that annuity over time can guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. That guarantee — along with the fact that no one has ever lost money left in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember – absolute safety of principal) — really will provide you with peace of mind. I am happy to meet with you – at your convenience and in your home – to explain in detail the benefits of opening a Knights of Columbus annuity, along with the benefits of our top-rated life insurance, disability income and long-term care insurance plans.
