From the Pastor’s Desk...
Every year on the Second Sunday of Lent
we hear the story of Jesus’ Transfiguration
from one of the Gospels. With our Lenten
journey so briefly under way, we may need the
encouragement of what lies ahead that the Transfiguration
story gives us. As Jesus was transfigured and ultimately
triumphant over death, so may our prayer today be that we too
will be transformed.
Year B’s survey of God’s covenant-making continues as
Abraham, challenged to an obedience beyond heroic,
prepares to sacrifice [his] son Isaac [his] only one, whom [he]
love[s]. In the end, Abraham’s willingness to obey proves
sacrifice enough. God spares Isaac and promises Abraham
that in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find
blessing.
Linking Old Testament and Gospel, Saint Paul marvels
that what God did not require of Abraham, God was willing to
do for us. This prompts Saint Paul’s confidence, as it should
ours, that God, Who did not spare His Own Son but handed
Him over for us all, will also give us everything else along with
[Jesus], namely, forgiveness here, and eternal life hereafter.
Therefore, the Second Sunday of Lent always features
Jesus’ Transfiguration as a glimpse of Lent’s and life’s
destination. Our Old Testament past, represented by Elijah
and Moses, our present discipleship, modeled by SS. Peter,
James and John, and the heavenly future transcending all
earthly glory and symbolized by Jesus’ dazzling white robes,
coalesce in this radiant moment. Saint Peter, speaking for all
of us, whose earthly glimpses of heavenly beauty are all-toofleeting, proposes to preserve it forever: Rabbi, it is good that
we here! Let us make three tents. But from the cloud a voice
corrects Saint Peter, This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him.
What does Jesus say?
Forego the glimpse, leave the
mountain, walk discipleship’s path of self-sacrificing service
and unconditional love: Lent’s transformational journey that
alone leads to Easter’s–––and eternity’s–––transfigured glory.
++++++++++++
Early this Sunday morning, I will fly down to Oakland,
California, to attend the annual Dominican Superiors’ Meeting
for the Western Province. This meeting starts on Monday, 2
March, and will last until Friday, 6 March. The meeting takes
place at the retreat house of the Sisters of the Holy Names of
Jesus and Mary in Santa Cruz, California.
Upon the completion of this meeting, I will take my afterChristmas break at Saint Dominic’s Priory and Parish in Eagle
Rock–––a sleepy hamlet nestled between Pasadena (east)
and Glendale (west)–––with the famous Colorado Boulevard
(of Rose Parade fame) running through these three cities. I
return to Holy Family on Saturday, 14 March.
Respect for Life
Representative Harriet Drummond recently
introduced HB99 to legalize assisted suicide in
Alaska. We have been there and done that. In
1996, a similar bill was defeated by the Legislature
and, in 2001, by the Alaska Supreme Court. In his unanimous
opinion, Justice Alex Bryner wrote that the State "insists that
the terminally ill are a class of persons who need protection
from family, social, and economic pressures, and who are
often particularly vulnerable to such pressures because of
chronic pain, depression, and the effects of medication."

volunteers are needed. Please come and help.
Centennial Celebration in March
March 19 is the Solemnity of St. Joseph, the man God
called to be the head of the Holy Family, and the protector of
the Catholic Church. So we have chosen to pray a Novena to
St. Joseph in the month of March. The novena will be March
11-19, during all of the Masses.
“Feeding the Hungry” is this month’s theme. It fits well
with the tradition of the preparation of food altars in honor of
St. Joseph. During the month of March, in addition to hosting a
food altar for the Solemnity of St. Joseph, we are coordinating
volunteers to serve dinner at the Brother Francis shelter each
night (except Fridays). More information is available at the
Parish Office. We will also be coordinating volunteer sign-ups
after the Sunday Masses. Please consider partaking in this
service as part of your Lenten journey. Notice that for the
month of March the Holy Family statue will be receiving your
food donations for the food pantry.

STEWARDSHIP IS
THE GRATEFUL RESPONSE OF A CHRISTIAN DISCIPLE
Reflections on the readings for the Sundays in March*
March 1, 2015 - 2nd Sunday of Lent
“’Here I am!’ he answered.” – Genesis 22:11
It is easy to say, “Here I am, Lord,” when we are kneeling in church. Can we just as easily answer, “Here I
am, Lord,” when we go home, when a neighbor needs our help, when a fellow parishioner asks us to join a
committee, or when a letter asks for our financial help? These are often exactly the places where Jesus calls
us to be.
March 8, 2015 - 3rd Sunday of Lent
“You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything…” – Exodus 20:4
How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do not always take the shape of physical things, things
we can touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times they take the form of things we cannot
touch and are much harder to spot - pride, power, ego, comfort or health.
March 15, 2015 - 4th Sunday of Lent
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…” – John 3:16
Of all the wonderful gifts that God has given to us, the gift of His own Son is truly the greatest. How can we
ever thank God for a gift like that? God does not ask us to sacrifice our own precious firstborn, but He does
ask that we be generous in making some sacrifices for Him.
March 22, 2015 - 5th Sunday of Lent
“I will be their God and they shall be my people.” – Jeremiah 31:33
What does it mean to be God’s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we
are belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given us.
It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our neighbors and the world, just as God
cares for us.
March 29, 2015 - Palm Sunday
“Pilate again said to them, ‘Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?’ And
they cried out again, ‘Crucify him.’” – Mark 15:12-13
Jesus told us “whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.” Every day we are presented
opportunities to help someone. Every day we have the opportunity to see the face of Jesus in others and be
the face of Jesus to others. Pray for the courage to stand up for those in need of our help.

MONTH

BY THE END OF THE FIRST MONTH OF
PREGNANCY, YOUR BABY IS AROUND
6-7MM (1/4 INCH) LONG - ABOUT THE
SIZE OF A GRAIN OF RICE!
Month One of Pregnancy
The amniotic sac is a water-tight sac that forms around the fertilized egg. It
helps cushion the growing embryo throughout pregnancy.
The placenta also develops at this point in the first trimester. The placenta is
a round, flat organ that transfers nutrients from the mother to the baby, and
transfers waste from the baby.
A primitive face takes form with large dark circles for eyes. The mouth, lower
jaw, and throat are developing. Blood cells are taking shape, and circulation
will begin.
