Lee Caplan’s 1955 Chevrolet
Message from David Smith—PCCC President
Wow what a year so far. I hope everyone made it through the "Wintry Weather" we had in
February. I thought I had left Chicago behind but I think some of it followed me home. Our
great club is on the verge of National Recognition through the Goodguy's event in April, and
I could not be more impressed at how everyone has come together and volunteered their
time to make this a great event. That is what I love about this club, the members are always
willing to go the extra for a good cause. This show could finally bring Raleigh into the
spotlight also if it turns out to be anything even close to the other shows that Goodguy's puts
on. This is the first time for Raleigh and I know our members can and will make it great.
On another note I finally bought another Monte, not an early one but a 1985 Super Sport. It is
30 years old which technically makes it an antique. I plan on driving it everywhere. Well
please read the Tech Tidbits this month. With the Help of Don Watts and Les Shelton there
is some good club info, I think you will enjoy it.
Thank you all and be safe.

We’re How Old?
There was a few emails floating around about how old the Piedmont Classic Chevy Club was.
Well if anyone would know that it would be two club members I needed info from. I went to
Don Watts and Les Shelton; two gentlemen who have been in it pretty much from the
beginning. This is what I found out: Don wrote to me this, “When the "club" was first
organized, it was associated with Classic Chevy International (as a charter member) in which I
was a member also. That club at the time was for 1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevy's. Later the club
allowed other car owners (1955 to 1972 Chevy's). “
The name "Piedmont Classic Chevy Club" was suggested by Billy Kinton (Owner of a 1956 210
Chevy which he still has) at a regular monthly meeting. The Officers at that time were Don
Watts—Charter President, Alan Dasen—Charter Vice President and Faye Dasen—Charter
Treasurer. This is where Les Shelton comes in (Les is our Club Historian if no one knew that).
Les has in his possession the original minutes that Faye Dasen took at the January 1980 meeting
stating that the name "Piedmont Classic Chevy Club" was discussed and ultimately voted in as
the "club’s" new name. Les also told me that there are rosters dated in 1979 but not as Piedmont.
Regardless of the date of inception, Don Watts and many other members of Piedmont Classic
Chevy Club have been with both facets of the car club’s. So in saying that, I believe that
Piedmont Classic Chevy Club was born (officially) at that January 1980 club meeting which
made Piedmont 35 years old in January 2015, but like Don and Les have stated this "Club" has
been around since sometime in the 70's. That is a long time for any club to stay together. Here
is wishing all club members another 35 or more years. Thank You Don and Les for the
information and help.

The Chevrolet Lumina was a name used on
many vehicles produced under the Chevrolet
marque. First introduced for the 1990 model
year; Chevrolet used the name on a sedan, a
coupé and a minivan. The sedan replaced the
Chevrolet Celebrity, the coupé replaced the
Monte Carlo, and the minivan was both a
replacement for the Celebrity station wagon and
a completely new vehicle. The Lumina coupé was
replaced by the 1995 Monte Carlo, the Lumina
minivan was replaced by the 1997 Chevrolet
Venture, and the Lumina sedan was replaced by
the 2000 Impala in the U.S. and Canada; in
Mexico, it was replaced with the Chevrolet
Caprice.
In 1990, the Lumina became the nameplate
under which Chevrolets were raced in NASCAR,
more than a year before the model was available
to the public.
