These skills include the ability to reason, analyze, and problem solve. Within an inquiry-based learning environment, educators foster these abilities when they engage children in conversations that build on their existing knowledge and stimulate their curiosity and imagination during play, read alouds and everyday activities. Explore the moment-to-moment skills that educators need to create powerful conversations that support language and literacy development. Janice Greenberg, B.Sc., D.S.P., is a speechlanguage pathologist and Director of Early Childhood Education Services at The Hanen Centre. A co-author of three guidebooks, Janice is an experienced leader of Hanen Programs and provides training to teachers and speech-language pathologists worldwide on how to effectively apply the Hanen approach to support the language, social and literacy development of preschool children. Janice has over 35 years of clinical experience working with preschoolers and their families and educators. She has also been actively involved in evaluating the impact of Hanen Programs and is the coauthor of several research studies. Participants have the opportunity to attend two of the following four breakout workshops: 1. Get everyone in on the act so they can interact: supporting children who are challenging to engage. Janice Greenberg, B.Sc., D.S.P. Speech-language pathologist and Director of Early childhood Education Services at the Hanen Centre With an emphasis on inquiry and play-based learning, effective conversations between teachers and children become an essential vehicle for learning. Drawing from The Hanen Centre’s Learning Language and Loving It ™ Program®, this session explores practical strategies for supporting all children, even those who are more challenging to engage, to “get in on the act and interact” so conversations become an exciting time for learning for everyone. 2. Changing tech from a conversation stopper to a conversation starter Katie Plaunt, M.Sc., (A), reg. CASLPO Speech-Language Pathologist with the DCDSB Kristi Norris Assistive Technology Specialist with the DCDSB During the 21st century, our youngest learners are highly motivated by technology and game based learning. This workshop will highlight a variety of techniques to support the development of oral language and emergent literacy skills through the use of various common devices. Participants will have hands-on opportunities to explore iPad Apps that can be used to build oral language, conversation, storytelling and collaborating with others. Add these easy to implement strategies to your classroom, childcare and home. 3. There’s more to Old MacDonald than E-I-E-I-O Nancy Rotella, Owner of Thread Tales Retired Early Childhood Educator, Resource Teacher and Literacy Consultant Children’s songs can be used within emergent curriculum to build early literacy skills. Discover new activities and gain practical ideas that ‘grow’ from traditional songs like Old MacDonald. Participants will make a glove puppet using materials developed through Thread Tales. ** There is an additional $10 fee for materials for each participant. 4. “Hands On” Emergent Curriculum Tiffany Crane, B.A., B.Ed. This session will provide direction on mentoring the fundamental skills that supports further growth and development in emergent curriculum with a strong focus on language and literacy. It will provide an opportunity to strengthen the understanding of emergent curriculum and how to embrace it in innovative and tangible ways.
