Students may register for the MATO1R or MATO2R or BOTH sessions. Course material for either session will be differentiated. This course helps students strengthen skills in the grade 8 strands and build their confidence in math before approaching high school curriculum in the areas of; • develop their literacy, numeracy, communication and planning skills • number sense & algebra • complete a career portfolio • relationships • increase their confidence, motivation and ability to learn. • analytic geometry This course will count as one of the 30 compulsory credits required to graduate from High School. • measurement & geometry This course helps students become independent learners and increases their personal management skills, both in school and in their personal lives. This course will help students; Note: Students who have been identified through the IPRC process and are receiving special programming are NOT recommended to enrol in these courses since a GLE course will be part of their Grade 9 compulsory courses. Learning Strategies for ESL (English as a Second Language) and ELD (English Literacy Development) Learners Open Level (GLS 1OS) Course Offered: Summer This course introduces learning strategies and styles used in Ontario classrooms. ESL/ELD Language Learners will enhance their acquisition of English and literacy devleopment. Course Offered: Summer Literacy Preparation: Reading (LIT 1OR) Course Offered: Summer This 2 week course is offered to Grade 8 or 9 graduates. This course will give students the opportunity to develop the literacy skills in reading that are evaluated by the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. All students in Ontario must demonstrate these skills as a requirement for graduation. Students in this course will; • read a variety of informational, narrative and graphic texts • gain knowledge of the structure & organizational elements of various texts • use a variety of strategies to understand unfamiliar & technical vocabulary and language used figuratively • gain knowledge in grammatical structures & punctuation Literacy Preparation: Writing (LIT 1OW) International Languages Saturday Credit Course Offered: Summer OR Fall/Winter Students currently in Grade 8 will only be allowed to register for Level 1, Beginner or Native Speaker courses. Grade 8 students who have completed the Elementary International Languages program or who have some knowledge of the language, should select Level 1 Native Speaker. Students who do not have a background in the language should select Level 1 Beginner. Course Offered: Summer This 2 week course is offered to Grade 8 or 9 graduates. Students in this course will; • produce a variety of forms of writing, including summaries, information paragraphs, opinion pieces and news reports • partake in the writing process by re-writing, organizing, drafting,revising & editing • learn to develop a main idea, provide supporting details, organize & link ideas and information , use appropriate tone, grammar, punctuation and spelling.
